Love My Way
Ha! I'd totally forgot about this one, which I'd pretty much finished, but forgot to release. As you can see by the series number, I'm now a long way past this number. Ah well...
What's to say about Love My Way? I'd never seen it before and all I'd heard was how great it is. I wish I was prepared for how damn depressing it is. Geez, it's like each episode tries to the top the last as to how much more depressing it can be. And just when you think it can't get worse, HOLY CRAP THEY KILLED THE KID!!! How the hell do you even watch this without curling up into a ball crying for mummy? Christ, middle class misery is a barrel of laughs. Yes, Love My Way is engrossing to watch and everyone is great and this was Asher Keddie's break out role, but seriously pop some Valium before watching. And call your psychiatrist, they're missing you...
Finally got around to series 2 of the most depressing TV show ever made and well, it's still a joy factory. Plenty of depression, relationship breakdown and other fun stuff. The brothers move back in with their parents and share a bunk again and that's both depressing/funny as hell. Asher Keddie's character is in a highly toxic relationship which ends with her running him over (ha!) plus her kid doesn't want her. Just to brighten things up, Ben Mendelsohn turns up and well his character is a complete pack of cards. His best moments: he can't drive... his bizarre relationship with his gay son and the best, paying two Maori blokes to look after his bullied son, which unsurprisingly ends with them putting his bullies in hospital. Oh and his nonchalant attitude to performing euthanasia on his dying father. Still all highly watchable but only in small doses. Plus as a massive The Big Steal fan, it's great seeing Claudia Karvan and Ben Mendelsohn play a couple just like they did in that movie. Almost like a follow up.
Final series of this endlessly depressing drama and it still doesn't let up on the 'joy' with a miscarriage in the first episode. At least there's some relief from the neverending tragedies in the form of Ben Mendelsohn's lackadaisical character who is just a crack up. Whether it's inviting his wife's ex over to tell him a neighbouring house he's interested in is sold, although he just stole a SOLD sticker from another sign and obviously so. Or smoking in the shower. Or driving while putting sauce on a sausage roll before crashing the car, running two blocks home and getting his wife to take the wrap. Or encouraging his son to have sex with his female friend (played by Adelaide Clemens in an early role) hoping that it will turn him straight and taking joy when he does it (which ruins their friendship for a while). And let's be thankful for that as most of the other characters have become even more unbearable and/or obnoxious. I know this show got all the critical plaudits back when it was shown, but man is it a hard watch with barely a character to care for and everyone hitting the self-destruct button. And, in probably the least surprising thing in the series, it actually has a happy ending. Run out of depressing things to happen perhaps...
