Rogue

US set Canadian undercover cop thriller that I've finally gotten around to watching. Definitely a B-grade series, but a watchable one once you get over that the plot is completely preposterous and is very much driven towards plot twists. Thandie Newton and Marton Csokas work well together as lovers, one a suspended undercover cop (Newton) desperate to get her son's killer and the other the kingpin (Csokas) she was after while undercover. Some surprisingly full-on sex scenes in this series (probably what attracted me...) but also quite violent. Newton's character is full of bruises by the end of the season, hell, by the end of episode 2 she's like that. If you want something watchable but completely disposable, Rogue is that show, but as you will see in future updates, probably don't need to go past series 1 because the plot become utterly ridiculous in future seasons.

And the sex/nudity drops off considerably too... Series 2 and maybe 3 if I have the time in the next day or so.

Series 2 moves onto a new case with some carry over of the previous season, actually some unnecessary carry over that doesn't add anything to the story and concludes unsatisfactorily, plus Marton Csokas doesn't come back, so that's also hampers that plot. Thandie Newton's character becomes a handler in a case involving a group of former soldiers (led by Cole Hauser) who have stolen $10 million in marked bills in Afghanistan, although that is teased out over the season for some reason. Hauser's a good addition, Newton is hamstrung with the handler role until she makes herself go undercover again, but the plot is even more preposterous than the first series. The teasing out of the plot is ridiculous not help by the carry over from last season, plus again the plot goes through a crim who knows Thandie Newton's character is a cop and doesn't tell anybody else about. There's a bunch of other stuff, but all that is topped off with the series end and now Newton's character is a liability the writers have to deal with in series 3. It was never a great show, but now Rogue is suffering from too many plots.

Series 3 begins with Cole Hauser the last man standing in his group of friends, but has now been seconded to work for a corrupt general doing legwork for a shady big shot lawyer (Richard Schiff playing Richard Schiff strangely enough). Hauser works that out a few episodes in and that ends in a most uninspiring way, but he also has a cleaner working for the general on his back who also threatens his father and is also involved in the disappearance of Thandie Newton. And Thandie Newton's arc end just as unsatisfactorily as most things in Rogue seem to do. Did I dream that the cleaner was shot in the chest and probably dead then magically came back to life to finish her off? Things like that seem to happen all the time in Rogue. Most of this series involves Sarah Carter's DEA detective following a gang war that has clearly been influenced by The Wire. The things about Rogue that I find strange is even though you're shaking your head at the lunacy of the story, you're still watching because the show is so damn watchable and the plot comes thick and fast so you don't have time to dwell on some stupid plot twists. I'm still baffled by Thandie Newton's whole arc in the series. Surely she makes a comeback to end another baffling plot twist...

Part 2 of the series 3 of Rogue (this trend of splitting series needs to stop, so unnecessary) and this series adds Ashley Greene and she has a couple of nude scenes which is definitely a major plus. After part 1 delivered barely any nudity, that was a nice surprise. As far as the show goes, it's business as usual, more bombastic plots and ridiculous plot twists each one more ridiculous than the last. Rogue is a pretty easy show to watch and has lots of violence and some sex (way more when Thandie Newton was around), it reminds me a lot of Strike Back, nothing special and sometimes downright silly, very pulpy but very watchable and in Australia, both are R-rated series which is incredibly rare for a TV show to be rated. I think there's one more series to go which is gonna be interesting to see how they start series 4 considering how series 3 ended.

Completely forgot that I hadn't watched/capped the final series of Rogue until I mentioned it off-hand in an update recently, so I finally got around to watching it and it's a preposterous as ever. Not a lot to cap in this series and there seemed to be diminishing returns in scenes to cap after a huge series 1, but there's a decent scene with Zibby Allen.
