Westside

70s set prequel to New Zealand series Outrageous Fortune with Antonia Prebble 'reprising' (well, in flashbacks) playing her grandmother. Each episode takes place a year apart and it's basically the gang do a robbery, Rita gets her own scam going while keeping in line her husband, son Wolf and the wives of the gang. Also, Wolf grows up doing usual teenage shit and they meet the quirky characters that would make up Outrageous Fortune. Feels a lot like a fans only affair, particularly at a brief 6 episode run and at times and one episode involving meeting and robbing real life drug smuggler Marty Johnson is utterly self-indulgent down to even showing the origins of the Outrageous Fortune theme song! It's fairly watchable and fun, but if you haven't Outrageous Fortune, most things will go over your head. To be honest, the series isn't essential, a bit of a wank and nowhere near the quality of Outrageous Fortune, one of my favourite shows of the last decade and so, but it happened, it isn't terrible and I don't regret watching it. Whatever that means...

More New Zealand TV, this time the second series of Westside, this time focusing on an ongoing job across the series instead of the year by year stories of the first series and it's so much better for it. Set against the 1980 South African apartheid rugby tour, this series was more in style of Outrageous Fortune, which it should have been in the first place. I see it just got renewed for a third series, so I'm assuming this is where Wolf meets Cheryl because if memory serves me correctly, Cheryl was 16 when she had the twins. I think that's right...

A couple of days a go I noticed that Channel Gem had been dumping the second series of Westside, two episodes a night this week and was supposed to show the series finale the day before it aired in NZ last night, but they buggered it up and it finished with the second last episode. But on their catch-up website, they had the entire series up, so I watched the series finale before NZ...

Another series of the New Zealand comedy/drama Westside is done and dusted, pretty much more of the same from the series now set just as the stock market crashes in the 80s. This time though, Ashleigh Cummings has gone off to America to make a TV show and she is replaced by Jessica Grace Smith, so not a bad swap. Also never really noticed Lily Powell as the youngest daughter on Step Dave but wow...

Finally gotten around to capping the final series of Westside which aired late last year. Bit behind on New Zealand series at the moment. Could only find the final three episodes in HD.
