December Captacular finishes well ahead of the field

Well, this is it for the year of 2006, the final update. I decided that I would end the year with a bang, so as you have seen, this December has been devoted to putting out as many updates as possible, and I've well and truly smashed the record for the number of updates I've had for any one month (not the most series though). And plus I've run out of metaphors for the title of the posts...

Haven is a film right up my alley. A multi-layered thriller featuring a number of characters who are connected by a certain event, even though they probably don't know each other. Haven is an alright film, but the film flagrantly rips off the narrative order trick that Pulp Fiction pulls, with much less success, hell, whole thread of plot disappear for over half an hour before they are re-explored, so you really have to concentrate watching this film. But, there is enough interesting characters to let this film have some success.

And as I said a couple of updates ago, I like Agnes Bruckner, so this was must see for me.

As I've said before, January will basically be the Australian update. I'm going to go back to batch updates, but I will start with The Dead Girl update, possibly tomorrow or the next day. There are also a number of Australian DVD releases over January (and February for that matter) including 2:37 and Book of Revelations. I also have a few movies from TV, including A Wreck, A Tangle, Stepfather of The Bride, Sum of Existence (which was on TV last night, not much from it, but there will be something). Also, there will some caps of the women of that terrible defunct soap Headland and those Neighbours caps I promised ages ago. And then there's a whole bunch of other stuff that may pop up.

That's it for the year. I'm off now with only a few hours to the New Year here, so enjoy the year any which way you can and most likely I'll see you tomorrow. Yeah, the New Year is a bit of joke...

December Captacular is about to break the land speed record...

Aw man, do I need a rest, I'm almost looking forward to going back to work... Just kidding. But, it has been a long haul particularly doing a lot of new stuff as soon as I can get it.

Chromophobia is an interesting ensemble piece focusing on a bunch of characters that have all sorts of problems. Penelope Cruz is dying, Kristin Scott Thomas is bored with her life and has a son who has his own problems. Ralph Fiennes has disturbing sexual tendencies that may cost him his life and that's just the start of this roundelay of depression. Yes, this is no film to watch when you want to escape, but it is very good film and well worth a look.

And as you probalby know by now, Penelope is a fave of the website, having already being capped during the Captacular. So really, do you think I wasn't going to watch and cap this film...?

December Captacular continues along the alkali flats...

Man, this was bitch of a movie to cap. The four biggest problem areas for seamless works are sand, grass, water and sky. And there is a lot of sky in this film, as most of it is set outside. And sky is the worst of the lot (closely followed by water). This is where you find out what time of day something was shot, "Oh, this was filmed later in the day than the last cap, now I've gotta fiddle around and sort of make it look like it connects." So, if some of the strips look odd, I'm sorry, there's not much I can do without taking another decade to complete.

I had to check the credits to see if Kelli Garner's breasts got a screen credit, because as you will see in my caps, they are very up front and hard to miss. It's quite... breathtaking and I don't remember them being so... big. What attracted me to the film first (yes, this really did) was that Agnes Bruckner was in it. I've liked her ever since Blue Car and have pretty much seen everything she's being in since. She was great in The Woods and here in Dreamland, she takes another step towards bigger roles, hopefully. She is also fast becoming the most capped woman at the site. I've also just built some caps from Haven which she has a role in as a blonde and I almost didn't recognise her at first, she looked a tad like Scarlett Johansson and then it hit me, it was her.

There maybe one or two more updates before the year is out, they are set up, ready to be made. The caps from Chromophobia will be next and then Haven will be the last. The Dead Girl will be the first of the Australian updates.

December Captacular achieves it's objective...

I've done it. The objective of 10 updates for the month of December is complete. I can now sit back relax, enjoy the new year and get on with life, right? Right...? Well, I have a confession to make. Initially, the plan was to have 12-15 updates throughout the month, but you know, I didn't expect to get near that figure, so I made it 10, as it would seem reasonable to reach. Now, that it has been achieved, the plan is to go for 12 updates, as I have a few series lined up with just some finishing touches needed. You can see what they are in the coming soon section and they will be released over the last 3 days of the year.

Confession number 2: I love noir thrillers, B thrillers or pulp fiction stories. And today's update is very much in this category. El Cortez is about a man (Lou Diamond Phillips) released from mental institution/jail and now he works at a motel, mostly full of transients with various scams going and it isn't long before the man gets involved in a complicated plot involving an old man with a map to some treasure, a black man and his girl (Tracy Middendorf, she from today's update) and a cop looking to get the black man, any which way he can. I liked this film, it's not perfect, but it is very likable and Diamond Phillips isn't half bad here.

Confession number 3: This is me at the video store (if you were ever wondering...)

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest - err, nah, the first one didn't excite that much and now there's a sequel. Meh, I'll pass.
Superman Returns - Mmm, no. Superheroes don't interest me and I can't understand for the life of me why no one can't recognise Clark Kent as Superman. All he does is take his glasses off, for crying out loud.
El Cortez - Hmm, no name cast, low budget noir thriller. Yes!

Seriously, who thinks like this? Everyone of you would pick up POTC or Superman and not even notice El Cortez. This is what happened a month ago and I still haven't seen the first 2 films, and have no intention to in the near future.

December Captacular is fast approaching it's destination...

This month, I have tried to bring you a bunch of new stuff, I mean it would pointless to have a big month and just release stuff you've already seen before. So, I have had to dig deep and go to some deep and dark places to find this stuff (well, not really). This has also been the biggest month this site has ever had in the number of people who have come to the site, including people who have come for the first time and the month isn't even over yet. So, with the objective near completion, I hope you have enjoyed this special and the continue to come back to the site in the future (even if it's only every once in a while, I mean the site is freely available).

Alright, onto business, and this update is of the remake The Last Kiss. Regular viewers of the site may already know that I have capped the Italian original (L'Ultimo Bacio) and that I have a fondness for it, so I interested on how the Hollywood remake would come up. I've got to be honest, it's actually OK, but my problem with it is that the film is almost a scene for scene remake of the original, hell, some shots are extremely similar (look at my caps of L'Ultimo Bacio and you'll see it too). That's great if you haven't seen the original, but this remake is pointless if you've seen the original. This film just seems lazy to me. But hey, that's Hollywood for you.

And boy I am a sucker for cute little brunettes. You will see that this is a common theme throughout my collection that those who get capped the most are most likely brunette. And even though I have never seen an episode of The OC (don't look at me like that), I always look at pics of Rachel Bilson when they are posted around the traps and man does she look great in this film. She just looks great, whether she's just wearing T-shirt and jeans or getting dressed up.

I've decided that January will be another month of Australian updates, mainly because January is a pretty slow month for new releases, particularly in the US. I've accumulated another bunch of Australian source material and I'm finally going to get around to doing those Headland caps out there, a year after the show died a horrible death. There's also some redux series like last time, so there will be a nice batch of stuff to see. And if I don't have enough, I'll get around to another Spanish update which I have just sitting on my hard drive waiting to be seen. Stacks of nudity too. Check out the coming soon and you will see what the first update of 2007 will be.

December Captacular has left a trail of dead a mile long...

Another first look and this update should've been done 2 months ago when I actually got the DVD, but I'm slack (as you would've seen if you are a regular here), so it's finally done and only because the DVD is about to be released in the US.

I don't think Bandidas got released in cinemas in the IS, which is a shame because it's a very likable film. And Penelope and Salma get along really well in this film, although, they are not really sexy for long in the film. One complaint, the film should've been in Spanish, even more so considering it's straight to DVD, but both actresses would've been speaking their native tongue. Hey, but I enjoyed the film nonetheless.

And I'm a massive Penelope Cruz fan (and Salma is nothing to sniff at either), have been for ages and will always be. I saw Volver recently and it just felt great to see her speaking Spanish and sinking her teeth into another Pedro Almodovar film. Actually, while I still liked Volver, I was a little disappointed that Almodovar seems to be going over old ground.

Sadly, no videos from this series, though there might be, but I'm working on other stuff at the moment, so it's just a matter of getting around to it. Also, I may or may not have an update before Christmas, as I am pretty busy in the run up to that day. As you can see, I haven't got anything in the Coming Soon section as I haven't decided what I am going to do. But it will be good, I promise :)

December Captacular decides to take no prisoners

Even I can't believe that I've done 7 updates in December and there's still 13 days to go. The plan is to do at least 10 updates for the month and everything is working out even better than first thought, a rarity for this site. That could mean that there maybe more updates than planned :)

I love Zhang Ziyi. There I said it. If you look back in the past 18 months, this is the 4th series I've done of her and I wanna do more. But, there's not much left or easily available to me, so I'll have to wait, sadly.

The Banquet is another good Chinese period film, similar in tone to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, about a group of people in the royal court who are looking to get rid of their enemies. Lots of wire kung fu and conniving from the major players and while it's not perfect, it's well worth a look if you can get it.

December Captacular is in full throttle...

Well, it's done, this mammoth effort to get this series out. Usually I can get 3 to 8 updates with the amount I've done in the past 4 days, hell I wouldn't get this much done in that time, but hey, work is slow and I had some spare time, which meant I could get it out today instead of tomorrow or Monday or even later.

I think you can guess that DOA is a B grade film dressed up as A production, but when you base a movie on a video game that has pretty much no plot, you know what to expect. DOA is bad, really bad and clearly made for teenage boys on constant erections (what the hell does that make me?). There are so many tame arse, crotch and tit shots in this film that it becomes laughable after only half an hour, probably even before that.

Here's a sad confession: I actually saw this in the cinema. For 5 bucks, so I didn't completely feel like a dick, but hey, there was nothing else on and I had a couple of hours to kill. I also thought the maybe, just maybe that there might be something to like in this film, especially since the director of this directed a film I really liked called So Close. Hell, it's a very similar plot, but that film had some heart and a gentle playfulness that made it so much more enjoyable. Oh and Shu Qi is in it, and I like her a lot. But, alas, it's junk food and Eric Roberts is the bad guy kicking the shit out of a professional... Hi-larious.

Also, I've just seen Pledge This and Holly Valance doesn't get naked as was suggested, hell she's hardly in it. And, it's also the most pathetic film I've seen in a long while. I'll post some caps from before the end of the month, but I'm in no rush to revisit the film (it was also the film I mentioned about a maybe exclusive, but it won't be and I'm completely uninspired to do something with it). I haven't decided what to do next, but it will be in the next couple of days.

December Captacular continues on, but not as unabated as first thought...

This update should've been ready last night, but for these effin' videos. They have been a total disaster. I have tried that many different ways to encode them, and all I get is pure shit. I finally found a program that does some alright, but others are all over the place. It's frustrating the hell outta me, so, I decided, fuck the videos, just get the caps out. The videos may come in the future, but don't hold your breath. I'd rather move on...

Here's some words that usually have me running for the hills: From the makers of 'SeaChange'. Here's some more: From the makers of 'Cold Feet'. What happens when you combine them together... Tripping Over. Ugh.

Alright, I'm willing to give everything a go, even if it sounds like I'd rather get hit in the balls, and hell, all the critics we're salivating over the show, which is a rarity in this country, so I sat down and watched the first episode...

Yep, my first instinct was right, running for the hills was the correct response. The show may be a critic's darling, but man, it's a relationship drama, one of which is based on an interesting idea (backpackers travelling the world), but like backpacker's themselves, it is very flighty and reactionary. So, the characters are all over the place and their decisions are incredibly stupid, like the guy who dumps his girlfriend and decides he's gay. You've got to be kidding me. Then there's the women on the verge of marriage who goes to Australia because her drugged up and dying mother said to. You wanna know why? Fucked if I know, but apparently it was to live a little, which well, she doesn't do, in fact her final decision is so proposterous, that I'm not even going to bother with the second series. Sure, I'll cap it, but that's all.

I must be missing something. In fact, I'm sure of it. Ah, forget it...

Also, please be patient with the site. You may have seen that the 'bandwidth exceeded' page has come up when you've come to the site. The site has been down on 5 of the 10 days already this month for at most 6 hours. While I have an extremely large bandwidth limit (higher than 90-95% of all websites including many large ones), the demand has been high and I've had an increase of 20-25% in viewers of the site over the past couple of weeks, some coming for the first time, so they've got some catching up to do. Look, everyday the site reloads at the same time, so you'll eventually get the site. Of course, if the bandwidth limit is exceeded, you won't be reading this...

December Captacular continues on unabated...

"Hey, hang on a minute, this isn't the update that was promised. Where is it?", I hear you saying. Oh, it's coming, possibly tomorrow, it's nearly done, but I thought let's get this series out there, because there's sure to be some interest.

I thought I might take a look at Marie Antoinette, the new Sofia Coppola, mainly because I liked her previous two films, Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides (which coincidently is on TV tonight, well, will be over when I post this) and well, I love Rose Byrne and wanted to see her work here.

Here's a word to describe what I felt afterwards: Disappointed.

How 'bout extremely disappointed. The film is a serious misfire, especially in the way it melds period setting with a modern attitude. I mean, everyone acts as if it's right now, not late 18th century France and it's accompanied with a modern soundtrack, which also seemed out of place. Hell, if you set the film right now and renamed Marie Antoinette some celebrity today, you couldn't do any worse. Bascially, Marie is a sexually frustrated woman who is pining for the perfect man. Shit, it's Bridget Jones' Diary in the 18th century. No wonder the French were pissed at the film. Ah, let them eat cake...

Then there's my other reason for watching the film, Rose Byrne. She's hardly in it! She doesn't turn up until 45 minutes in and then turns out to be nothing more than Marie's gal pal. Ugh...

I just did some quickcaps of Kirsten from the film, because the quality of the DVD rip I got was not good enough to do seemless with. Oh, its' OK, as you will see, just not the quality I need without doing to much work. There's a few videos as well, taken straight from the rip, so you can decide yourself. I might revisit the capping of the film on DVD release, but I won't watch it again. No way, no how.

And I predicted this a month ago. Emily Barclay would win the best actress at the Australian Film Industry Awards. Alright, it was a given, but she was pretty fantastic in the film, Suburban Mayhem (as she was in In My Father's Den). It will be interesting to see where her career goes from here. I mean if Nicole Kidman can be a massively big actress and yet, her film career has been possibly the most uninteresting and overrated I can remember, imagine what Emily can make with an already impressive start. Did I just say that about Nicole...? (I'll have to rewrite that in the final draft)

December Captacular continues on...

Now I know I'm mad. I'm keeping the promise I made with another update. Three in 4 days. Something really is wrong with the world.

As I said in my previous post, Maggie Gyllenhaal has become typecast as the troubled soul and boy oh boy, her character is troubled in this film. Just out of jail, she tries to settle down with her daughter, get a job and move on with her life, but she is an implusive character and for every step forward she takes, she seems to take two steps back. Good film, and Maggie has mastered the role, but this is definitely a heavy film, not for everyone.

As you will see, the collages are made from a DVD rip, which is an AVI file of the movie which is taken from a DVD, usually made the size of 1 or 2 CDs. The quality is still pretty good, but it's not quite DVD quality. And the videos I made are the same size of the rip, which is a bit smaller than usual. But, that doesn't mean the quality is down, in fact they are surprisingly good. December Captacular continues

5/12/2006 - It's a sad day here and in the celebrity imaging community with the passing of Desperado (of Desperado Megalinks). He was extremely generous to myself and many others in the community and he will be sadly missed by all of us.

May he rest in peace and condolences to his family.

Well, I'm keeping a promise, something must be wrong with the world... seriously. I said that I'll release a series every few of days and here's the second for this month and we're only 3 days in.

Today's update in from the multi-layered film Happy Endings. And it's the first from my Maggie Gyllenhaal playing a troubled soul, wandering through life collection. The second will be in the next few days, from the film SherryBaby. Yeah, Maggie has mastered the role of the troubled soul to the point where she is now the go to girl for that specific role. Secretary may have ruined her forever. Ah well... She's still very good at it.

December Captacular 1

Would you believe that I've been capping for 5 years? (well, that's when I started my Yahoo Group!)

Yeah, sad isn't it... Nah, it gives me an excuse to do what I love doing, watching films, plus with the added bonus of great looking women in their various states of sexiness.

So, what am I going to do to celebrate?

I'm going to give you the gifts. Yes, this month I'm planning on at least 10 updates on the site. So, instead of waiting to the end of the week to release a series in one big update, I'm going to put it up at the site as soon as I finished it (like I really should anyway...). So, if you want my updates piping hot, I recommend coming to the site every few days for this month only. I have some plans for some stonking updates including a number of exclusives, to which today's update is no exception.

You know deep down I was really hoping that the American remake of Pulse would be worth a look. I loved the Japanese original, in fact I think it's one of the best J-horror films going about (a lot of recent J-horror has been either shoddy retreads or just plain poor). There is some genuine shocks in the original and is much more doom-laden than the Hollywood remake.

But, the Hollywood remake has an ace up it's sleeve. The casting of Kristen Bell was a bit of a masterstroke, considering her role is here is a variation of her Veronica Mars character. And she works well here. The film is not bad, but it's not in the same class as the original (there's seems to be a lot of dumbass and hot looking nerds in the Hollywood one), but it's not a total loss and there is an attempt to transcend most PG-13 horror films, that probably accounts for it failure to find a decent following (hell, it hasn't even been released in Australia yet).

Also, you might've noticed that the site is slowly starting to take shape. Small changes have been made and will continue to be made until I think I've got it right. I mean, the site doesn't even have a header. If you didn't see the title bar, you'd wonder what the hell you've stumbled onto... Next up, I'm planning a coming soon preview in the sidebar, only problem is that I don't know what I'm going to do next, so it might just be a bastardised one. Er, anyway, you'll see it in the coming days. I'm also in the planning stage for the Australian section of the site. I have a idea or two down on paper and I'm hoping to have something up during the holidays when I have a day or two to do stuff.

In the meantime, enjoy the December Captacular.
