Update for 19 January

Well, more caps and I seem to be piling them up, this is probably the biggest month of work I've done for a while and we are only 19 days in.

The Wrestler is a fairly conventional tale about an once high profile pro-wrestler who is still hanging on to what's left of his fame in the ring while desperately hanging on as a down and out loser in his day job. While it's a by-the-numbers story, it's expertly made and acted and that's what stamps it above most films. Mickey Rourke owns this film and Marisa Tomei is still looking great.

The Wackness is a set during the summer of 1994 when New York hip hop was at it's peek and an 18 year old dope dealer is about to have one hell of a summer. His only real friend is a psychiatrist gets dope in exchange for some psych sessions. And then he takes a shine to his daughter. Not much more happens than that, and to be honest, it's a bit hit and miss. There are some very good moments, but in between those, it drags and his home life seems inconsequential, just a place to sleep. Worth a look if you're patient, but don't blame me if you hate it...

Blindness, well, don't you just love metaphorical films... I mean fuck, what was the point of 'the blindness' if people act the same way without 'the blindness'. And why was Julianne Moore the only one not blind? Give me a fucking break. First The Happening, now this... Just enjoy the magnificent pointless nudity :) Particularly Alice Braga, who was named Sonia Braga in the videos section for two weeks and nobody noticed. You filthy perverts :D

Then there's Pure which is definitely not for those who like things spelt out for them. This very hard to find Canadian film starring Laura Jordan, who I'm liking more and more everytime I see her, is about a woman who has to decide between finishing her college degree or going back to her party life. It's very fanciful and non-conventional, but also frustrating, but at least it's not metaphorical. And more Laura Jordan please!

Finally, Oscar etc. has two ongoing plots, one about a woman with a terminal disease who finds a painting by an obscure artist and the other set 50 years before focusing on the artist during his time. It's an OK film, but I'm tired and I just don't care right now...

Update for 18 January

OK, back again with another big batch of new international stuff and Spanish/Latin stuff.

Bottle Shock is a fine little film about a wine contest between French and Californian wine makers mainly set up to show how superior French wine is, but it turns out very differently. Oviedo Express is about a play being staged in Oviedo and the many characters and back stage shenanigans involved in its making. The Night Buffalo is a bloated mess of a film from the writer of the similar bloated mess Babel about two friends who fight for the attention of a girl, but when one man has his girlfriend stolen from him, he commits suicide and the ramifications of this. Yep, if you've seen Amores Perros, 21 Grams and even Babel, you already know the themes of this film, this is pretty much the same, with a stack more nudity and something else you can find out about in one of the videos :) Finally, The Babysitters is a 'being there done that' tale about a babysitter who starts a service where the young girl sleeps with the father of the kid for a few extra dollars. Yeah, it's equal parts titillating and icky...

Update for 3 January

See, I told you I'd have another update this weekend ;)

First up is the latest Woody Allen film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona. Let's face it, there's not too much to cap from a Woody Allen film, but adding both Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz can certainly change that. Actually, this is probably the best Woody Allen film since the early 90s, a sultry tale about two American girls holidaying in Spain (well, mainly Barcelona and Ovideo) who reluctantly accept an 'indecent proposal' from a local artist to spend the weekend with him, mainly so he can sleep with both of them. But, of course, things don't go as expected and both are in for an interesting summer when the artist's unstable ex-wife is put into the mix. I'm a bit yes/no on Woody Allen films, but this is a definite yes and well, it's been a while since it's been so definite.

Arráncame La Vida is a very good film about the relationship between a Mexican general and his wife as the general goes about his life-long campaign to become the president of Mexico. At first she is seduced by her husband's charisma, but when she finds out his that he is very far from faithful to her (and then some), she continues on being his wife, only for the power and pleasure that it gives her, but that is severely tested when she falls for a conductor. Regulars to this site will know that I adore Ana Claudia Talancón and here in probably her meatiest role to date, she excels. Hopefully, she will get these kind of roles in Hollywood in the future. Oh, and she get naked quite a bit, which is a bonus I suppose :)

Next up are two films starring Spanish actresses Ariadna Gil and Elena Anaya. First up is Lagrima Negras, a very good romantic thriller about a man in a perfect relationship who is robbed by two desperate female junkies and then raped by one of them. When he meets his tormenter days later, she is a completely different woman and this intrigues the man. So much so, that he begins an affair with her. And that's when things begin to spiral out of control for the man. A solid film. But Alatriste on the other hand is not so solid, in fact it's messy. Following the adventures of Alatriste, a famous 17th century Spanish soldier as he heads back to Madrid after being injured in war, he looks after his friend's son and teaches him to be a great soldier like him while taking small jobs helping out the local people in their troubles. Too much goes on in the film and while it's intriguing at times, it's also boring at other times and clearly too long. And guess what, Ariadna and Elena team up again in the follow up to the excellent Nobody Will Speak Of Us When We're Dead, Solo Quiero Caminar, which I can't wait to see :)

Te Doy Mis Ojos is possibly the best and most accurate film on the subject of domesitc violence, which is never pretty. Focusing on the perspective of both the husband and wife, and how each of them are coping with the latest incident, with the husband getting help so he can win his wife back and the wife getting on with life, getting a new job and hopefully moving on from her husband. The film isn't a easy film to watch and doesn't play it safe, especially the last half an hour which isn't pretty, but this is an excellent film if you want something heavy to watch.

Finally, the Mexican comedy Casi Divas, a film about the search for a replacement to a diva soap actress which is light and fluffy and a passable time filler, but if you look at it deeper, it falls apart fairly quickly. Whatever...

Update for 2 January

Alright, I've have a whole bunch of Spanish/Latin stuff piled up for the planned Spanish update, well, I'm never going to get around to doing it the way things are going, so I'll be rolling them out over the next few update (you would have seen a few already).

The Strangers is a solid, but not completely successful horror thriller about a couple who have just had a bust up after she rejected his marriage proposal. While the man is waiting for a ride back to the city, there is a knock at the door and a mysterious woman asks for someone who isn't there. A little while later there's another knock and then things start getting menacing before things going horribly wrong. Similar to the French film Ils (Them), this film has a spooky beginning but doesn't completely hold that mystery for it's entire runtime. Well worth a look, anyway.

The Good Life is one of those films I absolutely hate where everyone is mopey and either wants to get out of their situation or kill themselves or are just weird for weird sake. Booooooring! The first half is unwatchable, but it has a few moments in the second half (Zooey almost getting naked :D), but Christ I'm miserable enough without having to revel in someone else's.

Alice Braga is hot apparently... Saw her first in City of God where she was ravishing and she's being amongst my faves ever since. It's a shame it's taken this long for me to cap her in this hard-to-find tri-lingual (Portuguese, Spanish, English and a fair chunk of each) love story Sólo Dios Sabe. Set half in Mexico, half in Brazil it's about a free spirited Brazilian girl who falls for a Mexican boy who found her passport. Nice little love story, but you gotta look hard to find it :)

El Nido Vacío is an Argentinean film, but it's the same old story, bored old man looking for something to do, falls for younger girl and you know what happens. And Astronauts is also an older man, younger girl story (this time a 15 year old girl!), a little different as it's about two people living on the edge of homelessness, but you know what happens. Ah, we are all so perverted us men, lusting after the young ones...

Hopefully another update tomorrow, or Sunday, but definitely one more update this weekend. A much more Spanish flavour, including an English language film set in Spain!
