Australian Classics for 26 April...

I've talked about it a bit recently, so now is the time to show you what Bloodmoon is all about.

In the death throes of the initial 10BA funding scheme, around the late 80s, a whole heap of shitty films got made in Australia as people became desperate to get the tax offset. Two such films were amongst the last of the initial scheme, Dead Sleep and Bloodmoon, both horror films, which were made in Queensland by the same producers and director and starred similar casts. Both are also considered amongst the worst Australian films ever made.

Bloodmoon has the extra special distinction of ripping off an idea from the 'great' horror producer William Castle. When released in the cinema (unlikely as that seems), the producers borrowed his idea of the 'chicken walk', in which before the ending of the film, a title card came up telling the audience that if the are scared, they can take the chicken walk to an actual coop. I'm wondering whether anybody turned up to the film in the first place.

Anyway, in a small coastal town, there are two Catholic boarding schools, one for the boys, one for the girls. When a boy and girl from each school, who are lovers, go missing, it starts a chain of events which affect the entire town. First, another couple are murdered and are presumed missing by the rest of the town. The science teacher at the girls school starts to act strangely, while his wife, the headmistress of the girls school continues her Sunday afternoon philandering, much to the science teacher's chagrin. And of course, the science teacher is the killer, that's not really a spoiler as it's revealed before the halfway mark.

Bloodmoon is a film that actually attempts to have loftier intentions than the usual teen slasher, but is betrayed by a completely rambling script, some utterly appalling acting, some of the most terrible kills ever committed to the screen (the one where the killer bashes the head of the girl on the table is clearly a dummy...) and how entire story arcs go missing for a long time or are completely abandoned.

Thankfully, the film has quite a number of naked ladies, most of which is just gratuitous. Sadly, the Christine Amor scene seems to be better in fullscreen than in 2:35 widescreen, ah well, maybe if I can find a cheap fullscreen version...

Personally, I would say that Dead Sleep is actually a worse film than Bloodmoon, even if I haven't seen Dead Sleep in over a decade, but I would need to see that film again to make a definite answer. But, Bloodmoon is definitely in the top 20 worst Australian films ever. Have I told you about Cut... (oh, and by the way, Houseboat Horror, highly recommended!)

Australian Classics for 25 April...

Haven't done one for a month, so, it's about time for a new addition of Australian classics, this time something from the curly-haired Nicole Kidman days, Windrider.

Windrider is a film set in Western Australia about an up and coming windsurfer/engineering hotshot/upstart who performs a 360 move for the first time which is spotted by a girl who he is convinced is the lead singer of a local band. He goes to one of her concerts and goes about convincing her to go on a date with him, but she is resistant, but not for long. When they finally hook up, all his luck begins to change and with the help of a shark attack, he begins to lose his nerve windsurfing just as the big contest is approaching. Will he win the contest and get the girl? Come on... Not a bad film, but not exactly great either, a film that doesn't know whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama, but doesn't really succeed at either. But, you can do far worse than this...

Speaking of far worse, I'll have caps and videos from Bloodmoon up in the coming days.

Also, you will find a rare extended sex scene (as advertised on the DVD) below and by extended, it is about 2 seconds longer, but you do get a full frontal of Nicole, which is cut short in the film.

Torture Porn Friday

I know you're all here for this. C'mon...

Penance just about has everything I hate, except for lots of pretty girls naked. Anyway, a well-meaning woman with a sick child makes a video of herself for a reality TV show in the hope of making $20,000 and going a long way towards helping out. When that doesn't pan out, she turns to the easy money of stripping with the help of her high school friend and a stripper herself. After a good start, her friend pushes her into a stripping gig that is incredibly weird at an abandoned mental hospital in front of a bizarre 'Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS' style group with a couple of other strippers. Then the 3 strippers are poisoned and wake up locked in rooms of the hospital and are forced to give 'penance' to some military style leader who wants to redeem the strippers and will do so with an extreme genital circumcision/sew up.

OK, that's enough plot description but the movie is filmed through the point of view of the camera holder, to which there are various of and us different cameras and this doesn't make a lick of sense. How can video from two different cameras be edited together? And why did they let the girl keep the camera after they imprisoned her? I hate those from the point of view of the cameraman/woman films because the camera person is a selfish arsehole who would rather film than help out. I'd ram the camera up there arse in reality. Apart from that, there's no tension in this film at all. No-one seems to care that tens of strippers have disappeared off the face of the Earth or that they are not told of the place they are the strip and blindly follow a somewhat creepy looking man (Tony Todd, who else?). Or the rather cynical words about how genital circumcision is bad in the end. I wouldn't have bothered with this film if it wasn't for the girls. I'm still wondering why I did...

The Collector is a much better film about a man who has worked at this house and believes that there is some jewels in a safe and plans to rob the house. But, when he gets there, it seems someone else has other ideas and booby traps the entire house so that he could capture it inhabitants and anyone else for his own private torture. The robber, who is stuck in the house, tries to help the family including a little girl who is hiding somewhere. Apart for some really dumb horror cliches (mainly in the final act), the film is a pretty solid if unbelievable horror film with the added bonus of Madeline Zima showing her breasts in her very brief role.

Update for 10 April...

Just a quick addition today.

Cracks is a drama set in an English all girl boarding school in the 1930s where the diving team is rocked by the addition of an upper class Spanish girl, Fiamma (Spanish actress and JM fave María Valverde in her first English language role). Her arrival changes the dynamics of the relationship between the diving teacher Miss G (Eva Green) and the girls in the team including leader Diane (Juno Temple). Miss G becomes fascinated with the worldly Fiamma, who is also a better diver than the other girls, but Fiamma is not interested in developing friendships with the teacher or the girls as she believes she will be back home soon enough. Her rejection results in a love/hate relationship with the other girls and will end in tragic consequences when an incident is misinterpreted by Diane. The story is very straightforward, but is hampered by an inconsistant tone, partcularly in regards as to the relationship between Fiamma and the other girls, which seems to change inexplicably from scene to scene. Or maybe that's a statement on how girls treat each other. I dunno...

I have also made a change to the file names which now feature the name of the film. That has been a long time coming. Hopefully, I'll remember this for future series...
