Update for 29 October...

What no Australian Classics? Let's move across the Tasman to New Zealand.

Separation City is a New Zealand romantic comedy/drama with an international cast, set in the most part in Wellington about a group of couples who are at various stages in their relationships. Focusing for the most part on Simon (Joel Edgerton) whose hit a stale patch in his marriage to Pam (Danielle Cormack), but they are working through it. Meanwhile in Berlin (didn't I say this was set in Wellington?), Katrien (Rhona Mitra), a cellist, follows her husband with her two children to Wellington where he has a teaching gig. She is bored in Wellington and then her husband cheats on her and it becomes a lonely place. Until she meets Simon and the sparks is almost instant between them. They attempt an affair, but it goes badly as Simon suffers from premature ejaculation. Before the affair can get any traction, Katrien moves back to Berlin to be with her mother. Coincidentally, Simon has a trip to Berlin via work coming up, so they plan to begin the affair then, but his boss has arranged for his wife to join him in Berlin as a surprise and you can guess what happens then. A particularly adult look at the modern relationships and adultery, something you wouldn't see from Hollywood which is definitely a plus and the film is perfectly serviceable. There's plenty of sex scenes, but absolutely no nudity which is a shame. Ah well...

Australian Classics for 28 October...

Still going with the Australian Classics. Don't have much new stuff, so with a whole pile of Australian films ready to watch and cap, I might as well do them as things are a bit slow at the moment. So, here's a quick one today.

The Time Guardian is a 1987 sci-fi thriller about the last remaining humans in the 41st century in desperate need to save humanity from a bunch of evil cyborgs called Jen-Diki. The time travellers have decided that 1988 is a safe time to go back to and they send two operatives (played by Tom Burlinson and Carrie Fisher) to set up for the move. Except the cyborgs can also go back in time. Meanwhile, in 1988, the male operative meets a geologist (Nikki Coghill) who he enlists to help after the female operative becomes incapacitated (um, they ran out of money to pay Carrie Fisher...). To fill in time, they have resistance from local cops. Yeah, this is a cheap and nasty knock off of Terminator, that's needlessly confusing and spends most of its running time in boring old 1988 being harrassed by comic relief instead of shooting up some robots and when the shooting starts it's pretty lame. But then sci-fi is not a genre well known or well done in this country.

Nikki Coghill has a neat nude scene that's sadly in long shot (the second PG nudity in two updates after Starstruck). She also has a brief nude scene in a film I haven't seen since I saw it on a bus 15 years, Point of No Return. I don't think that film's going to make the transition to DVD as it was barely released on VHS. Good to see her acting again too, recently in an episode of City Homicide as the wife of a serial rapist.

Australian Classics for 26 October...

A couple more Australian Classics.

Starstruck is a rare Australian musical made in 1982 by director Gillian Armstrong about a young girl, Jackie (Jo Kennedy) who wants to be a famous singer. With the help (or possibly hindrance) of her cousin Angus, who acts as her manager, he tries to get her on the local music show WOW! (a massive Countdown rip-off if ever there was one, even down to the gay host). This is against the wishes of her family who want her to work at their diner. Angus goes about trying to get Jackie noticed including through some public stunts and when she finally gets on WOW!, it goes badly as the producers dial down her persona, so she believes she may have blown it. But, Angus has one last trick up his sleeve as he goes about getting her on the WOW! spectacular at the Sydney Opera House. You know, as a confessed hater of musicals, particularly modern ones, I was pretty shocked that I actually loved this movie. Sure, it's dated a fair bit, but the two leads work so well together that the film becomes infectious and incredibly hard to dislike. Shame Joey Kennedy never kicked onto to something bigger, she's a pretty underrated actress. I saw her in the first ever episode of Stingers (aw yeah, that's the next old show coming up on the TV side...) and decided to check out Starstruck on the back of it. Reminds me a lot of a more working class Nicole Kidman. Ah well...

Strange Planet is the completely forgotten 1999 follow up from Love and Other Catastrophes wunderkind Emma-Kate Croghan, and she hasn't made a film since, you can guess why... Basically, we follow 3 men and 3 woman through a year in their love lives as we wait for the inevitability of them finding each other. Yep, it's one of those contrived romantic comedies, the ones where everything is so obvious that you just wait for it to end or just stop watching. Croghan's obsession with Scorsese continues, this time an obsession with Taxi Driver, that isn't even inspired and feels incredibly lazy. And there's not one believable male character in the film. They all talk like women, no joke. Utterly forgettable film if ever there was one. I'm actually surprised Croghan hasn't made another film, particularly in this day and age of mumblecore, which her 2 films would perfectly fit into. But, I can't recommend Strange Planet. Not ever.

And whatever happend to Kate Beahan? Wasn't she supposed to break out after Flightplan and The Wicker Man? Oh right, The Wicker Man... At least she's in a new Australian film cos she disappeared for a while there. The bees, NOT THE BEES, AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHH... (fuckin' Nicolas Cage).

Australian Classics for 24 October...

Haven't done any Australian Classics this month, so here's a couple.

Summerfield is a 1977 moody thriller set in a country town (filmed on Victoria's Phillip Island, a quite mysterious place if you've ever been there) about a new teacher (Nick Tate) who comes to town to teach at the only school after the last teacher disappeared without a trace. But, none of the locals seem to be worried by this as people move on all the time. He is greeted by a young girl who lives on the property of Summerfield and after being invited to her house by her, he accidentally runs over her, breaking her leg. He meets her mother (Elizabeth Alexander), whose husband is also missing and her brother (John Waters), who lives with them on the property. These people seem disconnected from the local area, but along the way he befriends the mother and brother, even taking a shine to the mother. But, as with all small town, there's dark secrets and this one's a doozy that when revealed, will end quite horrifically. Intriguing thriller that hits the wall during the second act but it's shocking finale (and I can only imagine it to be even more shocking 30 years ago) is something else, although, the very final twist seems a bit much, even if it does tie up the initial mystery.

Josh Jarman is a 2005 comedy about a struggling playwright Josh Jarman (duh) who in an extreme stroke of luck, actually gets his play made, but only because without his knowledge, he's doing the producer's daughter and the producer wants her to be happy. That's only the start of his problems. His play is about to be torn apart by a respected director, the producer's wife wants him badly, his roommate is a struggling actor/bungling robber who's about to drag him into it and he's fallen for his housesitting neighbour. Passable comedy that if you're Australian, you'll notice that the film is cameo heavy, like a game of 'spot the local known actor', which is distracting, but the film is amiable nonetheless. I've been meaning to watch this film for 5 years, hell, I've been threatening to on this site for those 5 years. Getting the nice surprise of a couple of Kestie Morassi underwear scenes makes me wish I had found the film earlier.

There will be a couple more Aussie classics in the next day or two.

Update for 20 October...

A couple of quick updates today.

The Joneses is a comedy about the perfect family who moves to a new suburb. Except they're too perfect, they are salespeople who through a new marketing campaign have formed a family to sucker people into buying stuff that they shill. Good idea but falls flat when it turns into romantic comedy.

The Messenger is a highly depressing drama about a soldier that is assigned to bereavement duty, meaning he has to notify the loved ones of a soldier that the soldier is dead. Not much more than that happens, but it's pretty full on stuff and very well made. But, I don't think I could watch it again... Jena Malone gets naked in her brief appearance in the film, I suppose that's a plus...

More HD horror today.

Blood Night is a B-horror film about a group of popular students who have a party on 'Blood Night', an annual celebration in honour of Mary Hatchet who butchered up numerous people in a mental asylum because they stole her baby. During the party, the usual stuff happens and then of course the killing starts and boy are a lot people gonna get butchered, each more gory than the last. Has Mary Hatchet risen from the grave or is it someone else, perhaps a relative that has had that killing gene passed on. Wasn't a fan of the film at all, in fact the lost me about 20 minutes in when it introduced the characters and all of them are unlikable arseholes. Couldn't get to the butchering quick enough, except it takes forever to kill these arseholes off. And the killer couldn't be more obvious and least likely. I mean when Mary goes crazy after getting her first period, you're guaranteed that the killer is a girl, how 'bout making it the smallest one that takes forever to swing a pick. Couldn't someone fight back? Shit, when someone finally does, she is killed real easy. Bah!

Again, you know the procedure, it gets ugly, so be warned.

Update for 17 October...

Another Australian horror film today.

Fragment is about a war photographer who gets hit in the head by a piece of radioactive shrapnel, which gets embedded in his brain. A doctor predicts that he has not long to live, so he spends his last days roaming around Sydney with his camera, while a pretty young girl films a documentary of his final days. The man has a couple of experiences where he photographs dead animals that miraculously come back to life. Meanwhile across town, police shoot dead a particularly nasty serial killer (boringly titled the DVD Killer. Police should get someone creative to name these crooks...), where a stash of his snuff films are found. The photographer moves into a new apartment that may have been inhabited by someone who is now missing and when he accidentally discovers a bloodied DVD, it becomes more clear. It's another snuff film from the serial killer that was filmed in his apartment. Using his trusty camera, he photographs the girl on the DVD and as before, the woman comes alive. But, so does the nasty serial killer and guess who wants to keep on killing. So, is the photographer going completely crazy and imagining this or is this oh so very real. Imaginative horror thriller that is probably a decent director away from been superb, but is very watchable (and particularly nasty) nonetheless.

And as I said numerous times above, it gets a bit ugly and while Bree Robertson is naked for a fair portion of her role, she is also very bloody and cut up. So again, you've been warned.

Update for 16 October...

Back again. Another British film.

4.3.2.1 is a multi-narrative film that follows each of four girls as they experience one helluva weekend. Shannon (Ophelia Lovibond) is a downtrodden graffiti artist, whose mother has just left her father, possibly because of something Shannon has done. Feeling lost, she is attacked at a train station, but saved by an arse-kicking woman (Michelle Ryan), who has her own agenda for Shannon. Cass (Tamsin Egerton) is a rich piano prodigy who goes to New York to audition for a prestigious musical school and to lose her virginity to her internet lover. Well, they both happen, but not in the way she was expecting. Kerrys (Shanika Warren-Markland) is a brassy, take-no-prisoners lesbian, who steals Cass's keys to spend the weekend at her house with her lover (Susannah Fielding), but when her half brother finds out she gets locked in the panic room and all hell break loose above. Finally, Joanne (Emma Roberts) is a put upon girl who is forced to take lengthy shifts over the weekend at the quick-stop supermarket because her half-sister wants to shag her new boyfriend. Figuring it would be boring, things begin to get interesting when her bastard of a shift supervisor (co-director Noel Clarke) starts fooling around with the safe. Oh, and there's been a massive diamond heist that the girls unwittingly get involved in. Feels a lot like a UK girls version of Go, which isn't a bad thing and the multi-narrative works well for it. I enjoyed it a lot and with plenty of hot girls and interesting cameos (Kevin Smith, Mandy Patinkin, Ben Miller, Alexander Siddig, Eve etc.), what's not to like?

Update for 15 October...

Another quickie today from a British film.

City Rats is an ensemble drama about a group of people at what could be described as their lowest points. A man, who's only relationship is with a phone sex operator (Susan Lynch), tests out jumping from a building by dropping watermelons from the top of the building. He spies a woman (Myanna Buring) about to jump from another building, which stops her, to which they strike up a friendship. A lowlife just out of jail is followed by a woman who turns out to be the mother of the man he buried for someone else and she wants closure. A man takes his gay spastic brother out to have his first sexual experience. Finally, an artist is inspired by the bumping and grinding from the above apartment, who turns out to be inhabited by the above phone sex operator, who is also a prostitute who wears calipers, asks her to be his muse. She accepts, but on one condition... Pretty depressing stuff with, of course, everyone interrelated somehow, but not all that bad, hell even Danny Dyer tones down the lad 'act' and proves he does have some ability. At least it's not preachy, which these types of films seem to have a habit of being and which I truly hate (I'm looking at you Crash).

There'll be another update later tonight, a massive one from the film 4.3.2.1.

Update for 12 October...

Quick update today.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed is, for the most part, a claustrophobic thriller about 2 men who kidnap the daughter (Gemma Arterton) of a rich man for a ransom. It begins professionally enough but it becomes apparent that the relationships between the three people is much more than is been let on. It first begins to unravel when Alice overpowers one of the men and finds out that he is, or was at one stage, her boyfriend. And from there best laid plans fall apart. With only three actors in the entire film, the film must rely on strong performance and it gets a corker from the always dependable Eddie Marsan, who is extremely good as the lead kidnapper. But, the final act of this film devolves into the obvious and hurts much of the good work done in the first two acts, particularly the opening 10 minutes, a dialogue-free look at the minutiae of the setting up for and of the kidnapping.

Much of the nudity from Gemma in the film is actually pretty degrading, so be warned...

Update for 10 October...

Been a couple of weeks since I've been to the movies, so it's time to go back with a couple of movies in HD.

The Loved Ones is an Australian horror movie which I've banged on about for over a year, mainly because it's been delayed for nearly 18 months, had at least 6 release dates and still isn't out here (apparently it's still down for November 4 here, but I wouldn't put money on it). So, this is from the British Bluray. It begins with a horrendous car accident on a back road where Brent (Xavier Samuel, who was in the last Twilight film), learning to drive with his father, encounters a bloodied, half naked man, swerves to avoid and hit a tree killing his father. Since then life has been hell for Brent, but his girlfriend Holly (Victoria Thaine) has been helping him through and they are about to go to the school dance together. But, Lola (Robin McLeavy) wants to go to the dance with him and disappointed with rejection decides that she wants Brent all to herself and with the help of her father (the always dependable John Brumpton), they kidnap him and have him over for their own dance. And that's when it gets weird and that's an understatement. It also gets quite disturbing, moreso than I was expecting. But, fuck it, I loved it, like I always knew I would and if you're looking for something truly out there when it comes to horror films, this is highly recommended.

I just wish we got a better look at Jessica McNamee. Her departure from Packed To The Rafters has been one of the reasons that show has got as boring as batshit. Hell, I've given up on it in the past few weeks, it just isn't cutting it anymore. Anyway...

StreetDance was actually released in 3D in cinemas and the title is pretty self-explanatory. Set in London (yes, not the US for once), an urban dance group is rocked when it's leader quits the group just weeks before the championships sighting life pressures and the group is left in disarray. Seems he did everything for the group. His girlfriend, who he also dumps, Carly (Nichola Burley), takes over the group and things fall apart fast. They can't find a place to practice and some members leave the group. While on her delivery rounds, she enters a ballet dance academy and asks the head teacher if they can hire some dance space. She gives it too them for nothing, but in return, they must incorporate a bunch of unmotivated ballet dancers in their troupe. And you can gather the rest. I'm a sucker for dance films for some strange reason, they're all the same, but they are a bit of fun. I was attracted to this film because of Nichola Burley, who I liked in Donkey Punch, was in it and she does a fine job, but this film is topped off with the strange casting of Charlotte Rampling as the head ballet teacher, who adds surprising gravitas to this by-the-numbers film.
