Australian Classics for 30 April...

Got a shitload of Australian classics, so I'l try to make this a weekly update. There's plenty of good stuff to get through.

Turkey Shoot, or whatever you want to call it as the film has many names, is a 1982 Brian Trenchard-Smith directed thriller set in the not-too-distant future about a dystopian society where an unseen force takes troublemakers to prison camps for rehabilitation. The most ruthless of prison camps is run by Thatcher and it has some new arrivals in Paul and Chris (Steve Railsback and Olivia Hussey). Paul has a rebellious streak about him and this is identified early, so he is tortured to break his spirit. Chris is a timid woman and an object of desire for a wealthy benefactor, who wants her all to himself, if the guards don't have her first. It's also the season for a 'turkey shoot', a 'Most Dangerous Game' style hunt where benefactors choose a person to hunt by whatever method available. Chosen to be hunted include Paul and Chris, Rita (Lynda Stoner), Dodge and provocateur Griff. Can they survive the hunt and escape the camp? A mostly derided film, but I don't know. Sure, the limitations are glaringly obvious and the dystopia stuff was done better by Trenchard-Smith in Dead End Drive-In, but the film has some impressive gory scenes in it that make the film more watchable than it has any right to be. And Olivia Hussey looks like she was forced at gun point to be in this film. She looks positively terrified the entire time. It's amusing to watch, but it makes her character absolutely cringeworthy. A failure, but an intriguing failure nonetheless.

Update for 27 April...

Haven't done a foreign movie in a while, so let's go to Italy.

Colpo D'Occhio (At a Glance) is a drama/thriller about an up and coming sculptor who meets the much younger lover, Gloria (Vittoria Puccini) of a powerful art critic and they instantly fall in love. In the midst of their affair, the woman decides to leave the critic, only for the critic to have a car crash, most likely a deliberate one. She leaves him and runs away with the sculptor and they live happily but humbly for a while until the sculptor is given his big break and is commissioned to do some artwork for the local square, which was given the go ahead by... the critic. The critic decides to take the sculptor under his wing and make him a star, which is what the sculptor wants and all is well until the sculptor walks out on his first big show and is dumped from the gallery. Gloria becomes skeptical of the critic as it's becoming increasingly obvious that he is manipulating everything just to show how powerful he is, but the sculptor is having none of it and wants back in to the art world, but he must do as the art critic says, however unsavoury. There's a great shell of a story here, but it's so badly handled that one must wonder how incredibly dumb the sculptor is. Can't he see that he is been so easily manipulated by the critic. There's blind ambition and then there pure and utter stupidity and when the final moments play out as predicted early on, there's no sympathy for the sculptor at all. Ah well... Would loved to have seen what a 70s-80s Brian de Palma would of made of it, it's right up his alley.

And Vittoria Puccini is wow, just wow. I see she replaced Giovanna Mezzogiorno is the follow up to L'Ultimo Bacio (The Last Kiss) called Baciami Ancora (Kiss Me Again), even though she's 10 years younger and well, she's OK, no Giovanna. But man, Kiss Me Again is one depressing film. I wonder if they'll do a follow up in Hollywood. I dare them to do one as depressing.

Update for 24 April...

Movies, more movies...

The Rig is a horror thriller set on an oil rig where a bunch of workers are stuck there waiting for the next batch of workers, but they are delayed because of a storm. In the midst of the storm, something has washed up on the rig and it wants blood. So, with no outside communication and with only what they have on the rig they try to defend themselves against an unstoppable killing machine. Oh and there might be two of them... An OK horror thriller, nothing special, but a good timepasser nonetheless.

Oh, and Serah D'Laine used to be Sarah Laine from my favourite movie in the Wild Things franchise, number 3. Don't know what that's about...

Update for 17 April...

Back to the movies.

The Bannen Way is crime caper thriller about Neal Bannen, a conman who keeps getting himself into trouble. This time, he's got himself into a whole heap of trouble and is on his third strike. To get out of it, his father, a police chief, has gorced him into setting up his uncle, who's a big crime boss. But his uncle has other plans for him and get Neal to steal a nysterious box from The Mensch, a Jewish crime kingpin, which he does with the help of a pickpocket Madison (Vanessa Marcil). That's when it get's a whole lot worse for Neal who must decide to loyalty to his father or his uncle, while trying to avoid various lowlifes wanting their own piece of him. Feels very much like a pilot to a show that never went any further and of course, Neal Bannen is your typical conman, slick, smart, great with the ladies and always has a trick up his sleave, so the movie is nothing new (there's a strong whiff of Burn Notice/Macgyver about it, without the spy angle), but is fun without really stretching itself.
