Update for 31 March...

Because there's not enough Australian women on this site, let's have another series, this time featuring an Aussie actress from a British film.

Pelican Blood is the latest in the growing genre of suicide dramas that have escalated in number in recent years. Nikko (Harry Treadaway) and his two friends are obsessive birdwatchers and they spend most of their leisure time travelling to known sites to spot obscure birds. Everything is going fine until Stevie (Emma Booth), a pro-animal radical, re-enters Nikko's life after she escaped to Venezuela following their tumultous relationship which ended with Nikko attempting to kill himself as a part of a pact the two formed. But, it seems all is not well with Nikko, who is planning to end it all when he spots his 500th species of bird. As Nikko and Stevie fall in love again, it reopens all the old wounds. Things come to a head when Nikko shoots and kills an bird egg stealer which will result in one final sacrifice. Man, there's a lot of suicide obsessed dramas coming out lately. This one has an interesting slant in regards to birdwatchers, but this film offers nothing all the different in regards to the obsessive nature of a person, whether it be in regards to their hobby or the love life. And the ending is just a little too convenient, asking more questions than it answers.

But, I'll watch Emma Booth in anything, so you know... Anyway, there should be more stuff of Emma in the coming weeks as I'm currently working my way through the Underbelly: The Golden Mile blurays and I'm taking another look at The Shark Net. So watch out for that in the coming weeks, months, whatever...

Update for 29 March...

After some heavy stuff, let's go with a lighter movie, so to speak.

Kaboom is a teen drama mixed with apocalyptic themes about Smith (Thomas Dekker) who is sort of gay, sort of not who has a dream that is about to foreshadow his future. In the meantime, he has a crush on the dopey surfer roommate and at a party, meets London (Juno Temple), who he sleeps with and becomes fuck buddies with. His best friend Stella (Haley Bennett) has a new girlfriend Lorelei (Roxane Mesquida) who has mysterious powers, but is also one of the unidentified girls in his dream. The other unidentified girl is a red-haired girl who first throws up on his shoes and then is found in her underwear running away from men in animal masks and then murdered in front of Smith. Or so it seems. On his 19th birthday, Smith's dream begins to make sense and he could be the saviour of the world. Or something. Ah Gregg Araki, still making films that feature the hot bods of both teen boys and girls. He was the shit when I was college age and nothing much has seemed to changed over the last 20 years, still making films where shit just happens, still with dreadful dialogue. Oh, it's still a lot of fun, even if the ending to this film is so ridiculous that you'll be scratching your head trying to work it out (and if you have worked it out, please tell me, I'm still baffled as to why everyone is interconnected).

And as I said above, there's always the hot bods and there's a fair share of both in the film. But, if you were to tell me that there was a film where new faves Juno Temple, Haley Bennett and one of my fave French actresses Roxane Mesquida were to get naked in the one film, well, well... it's happened so enjoy!

Update for 27 March...

If Red, White & Blue wasn't heavy enough, let's get even heavier.

In Search of Sex (InSearchOf) is about the Gross family and how amazingly every one of them is fucked up sexually (and then some). Mindy (the gorgeous Emily Grace of What Alice Found) is in a thorny relationship with Dave, who is busy getting his new business going, except he's lying to Mindy about the business. He is in fact a male prostitute. Shea (Rachael Kemery) knows this and is using Dave for sex and she is in a relationship with Mindy's brother Jack (Michael Rady). Jack is a sexual predator, desperate for sex with anyone, but is currently also involved with Cathy (Jamie Lea Thompson), who claims to be pregnant, but as Jack finds out, she is a high school student. Cathy goes to school with the youngest Gross, Andy, who is struggling with his sexuality and tries to prove he's straight to his friends by sleeping with the local 'retard' who'll let you fuck her for ice cream. Meanwhile, their mother Lauren (Tracey Toth) is having an affair with a much younger man while rejecting her loyal husband. Then Dave, depressed by a trick with a virgin that has really stunned him and Shea's increasing neediness, drives his car into a tree, rendering him disabled. One year later, Mindy has a young child but can't bring herself to visit Dave, Jack has moved on to Beth Ann (Laura Cotterel) who desperately wants a child, Andy is still struggling with his sexuality in collage and Lauren is pregnant to her lover and her loyal husband is about to get a rude shock. Then things get worse... Man, this film doesn't mind rubbing your face in the character's fucked up sex lives. The last 15 minutes is like the last 15 minutes of Requiem for a Dream, but sexually, as the characters come to grips with their situations. Some of it is quite shocking. Also, all the high school kids look at least 25, which completely distracts from what the filmmaker is trying to say. And finally, all two of you who read this know how I feel about ensemble dramas and you can only gather what I think as this film evolves. Just one question. How can one family be this fucked up?

Ah well, plenty of sex and nudity throughout, so there's that. And why doesn't Emily Grace get more roles? (And why doesn't she get naked here? Come on!)

Update for 25 March...

Let's head to some heavy stuff.

Red, White & Blue is a drama that turns into a revenge drama about 3 characters whose lives collide. Erica (Amanda Fuller) is a woman who floats through life without much care, going from sexual partner to sexual partner. Nate (Australian actor Noah Taylor) is a drifter and former soldier (or so he says) who moves into the same apartment block as Erica and takes a shine to her, not necessarily in a sexual way, which Erica does not take well as she has never had someone who wants to care for her. He gets her a job at a hardware store, but she continues to fuck every man in the place until one rapes her in which Nate comes to her rescue. Meanwhile, Frankie (Marc Senter), a guitarist in a band with his friends is helping his mother beat cancer by giving her his blood. His mother's cancer goes into remission, but then he finds out that he is HIV positive, hence giving it to his mother. As we learnt earlier, he got this from having sex with Erica. He goes after Erica, kidnapping her from a restaurant. After imprisoning her, his mother dies, causing him to fly into a rage and he stabs and kills Erica. But, all the while Nate has been looking for Erica and he's not happy... An intense and at times extremely violent film, but a telling tale about people just trying to get by. It's extremely well acted particularly by Noah Taylor, who I wish did more work. And no punches are pulled here, recommended if you don't mind it being full on.

Includes a brief deleted scene of Amanda Fuller flashing.

Update for 23 March...

Back to the recent stuff, but still in Australia for the moment.

Primal is a horror film about a group of people who are going to a remote site where a bunch of rare tribal paintings are, so that they can study them. But, something is not right with the place. When Mel (Krew Boylan) goes into some water and comes out covered in leeches, a strange mutation comes over her and in the morning, she has developed sharp teeth and super animal instincts and begins to attack everyone. As the group are either slaughtered by Mel or turn into another of these mutations, it is up to Anja (Zoe Tuckwell-Smith) to save the day. Interesting horror film that has a very intriguing premise and boy does Krew Boylan seem to be enjoying every minute of it. Yeah, it's a gets a little silly, but it's not at all bad and is quite a bit of fun. Now, one of these days it'll get a release in Australia...

04-21/03/2011

Australian Classics for 4-21 March...

Last Australian Classics in this batch, I thought I'd go with one of the better known Australian cult classics in Patrick.

Patrick is a 1978 thriller about a nurse Kathy Jacquard (British actress Susan Penhaligon), who goes to work at mental care facility and encounters Patrick, a comatose patient who is a mystery to all. The arrival of Kathy stirs something in Patrick and he begins to show signs that he knows exactly what's going on. He communicates with Kathy via a typewriter. Then weird things start to happen, affecting people who are either attracted to her, as in her ex-husband and a new beau or are making her work life hard as in the matron. It seems Patrick has the ability of telekinesis and he will do anything including killing people to make Kathy his, even though he never leaves his bed. Patrick is very Hitchcockian in style and director Richard Franklin is actually a well known protege of Hitchcock (he directed Psycho 2). And boy does this film have a weird vibe about. Some of the film is quite perverse (something Hitchcock was also known for). The film is well worth a look if you like something that is well directed, a bit out there and some good thrills along the way.

Oh, by the way, Patrick is currently being remade by the guy that made Not Quite Hollywood. The original has a distinct style to it that worked. Hmm, I don't know about this.

Now I have to start watching films again. I haven't done so for a few weeks now. Oh, except for Primal, I'll try to have stuff from that film up when I can. Nice little surprise with Krew Boylan getting naked. If only Rebekah Foord or Zoe Tuckwell-Smith did as well...

Alright, as promised, I'm getting through these quickly. Just videos below.

Children of the Revolution is a 1996 comedy about a mother (Judy Davis) and son Joe (Richard Roxburgh) and their communist roots. The mother is a communist rabble rouser in the 50s and comes under the attention of both the Russian communists and local authorities. Accepting an invitation to visit Joseph Stalin (F. Murray Abraham), she has dinner and well, relations with him, to which he promptly dies. Ferried back to Australia, she finds out that she is pregnant and decides to have the child and also to marry her long time admirer (Geoffrey Rush). Years later, we follow Joe from rabble rouser, in which he falls for a policewoman (Rachel Griffiths), to head of the most powerful union in the country and then he is corrupted by power (hmm, like his Dad). And he grows a moustache and looks like his father. Or is the double agent (Sam Neill) who is his father? These questions and more are answered in this film which is an interesting but not wholly satisfying piss take on communism and how Stalin and his possible son's lives mirrored each other. Great cast, great idea, but runs out of steam the longer it goes.

Acting Out is a low budget drama about a teenage girl Skye (Lara Cox, severely miscast) who is forced into seeing a psychiatrist after being suspended from high school for her overly sexual behaviour. Frustrated at the world and having trouble dealing with her parents break up, particularly being left with her mother who is inattentive towards her. One day she meets Danny outside a convenience store, who strikes an instant interest in her, even though Skye couldn't care less. She reluctantly lets him drive her home. The next day, Danny meets her again and asks her out, to which she agrees. It doesn't go well. Then she tries to get back with her estranged father, but he has moved on and this pushes her over the edge and forces her to face up to her problems. You know, this could be a good film, but the casting of a clearly mid-20s Lara Cox as a 16 year-old is a gross mistake. She is fine in the role, but she is clearly not a teenager and looks like a fantasy girl in the plaid skirt school uniform. Ah well...

And I swear Lara had a pink and white striped bikini scene in this film, but I can't find it. Did I dream that?

Siam Sunset is a 1999 oddball comedy directed by actor John Polson (you know, he went to Hollywood to direct B-thrillers like Swimfan, Hide and Seek and Tenderness and now a jobbing TV director) with barely an Australian actor in sight. Perry (British actor Linus Roache) is a paint designer who's wife dies in a freak refrigerator falling from the sky accident and begin to get stuck at work desperately trying to make the colour Siam Sunset. Grace (New Zealand actress Danielle Cormack) is desperate to get away from her boyfriend, so she steals money and his car and drives as far as she can away from him. Meanwhile, Perry wins a trip to Australia and is forced to take it, but it turns out it a trip on a shitty tour bus with a ragtag bunch of tourists. On the way to their destination, they comes across Grace who has broken down and she joins the bus. When the bus breaks down in the middle of nowhere, the ragtag bunch make their way to rundown hotel where they camp because most have no money, except for Grace. Then, just as Grace and Perry look like getting together, along comes Grace's boyfriend and he wants her back. Oh and Perry brings with him a long run of bad luck for people around him that turns into good luck when he falls for Grace. And he discovers Siam Sunset. I seem to remember this film doing well when it was released, but it's now long forgotten. It's a nice time passer, nothing to write home about, just a solid oddball romantic comedy.

The Long Lunch is a 2003 eastern meets Guy Ritchie type thriller that has and probably never will be released in Australia. A group of crims have a hearty lunch at a Chinese restaurant the day before they are to pull off a heist. While they eat, play, tell stories and generally act obnoxiously, a group of workers at the restaurant overhear their plans and decide to pull the heist as they are being debauched. Except to pull it off perfectly, they must do it before the crims have finished their lunch. So, they take the crim's car from the valet and hold up the factory. But, as everyone knows from the Guy Ritchie film, things go awry. It turns out one of the crims is an undercover cop and is in love with the head waitress. Another gang of crims also wants the loot and start shooting up the place. And various other little tangential things happen that end in many dead bodies. It's a shame this film has never been released here because it's a lot of fun even if it has some really crude humour that seems out of place (one scene on a toilet is really off-putting). Sure the film wasn't funded by the government, so it has little chance of getting a release except through a minor distributor (a possibility considering some of the Aussie indy films that have gotten released), but that's OK, we can have the latest slit ya wrists drama hand delivered to empty cinemas. That reminds me...

Nothing really to cap from the film itself (there is a bizarre sort of sex scene while playing the pinball machines), so the following video is from the deleted scenes. Odette Joannidis isn't actually in the film itself, so nice of her to get naked for her only scene.

Matching Jack is not really an Australian Classic as it was released in late 2010, but it can go here because there's nothing much to cap from it. Anyway, this film is about a mother (Jacinda Barrett) who is hit with two bombshells at the same time. First, her son has been diagnosed with leukemia. Secondly, she finds out her husband (Richard Roxburgh) is a serial philanderer, as in any woman he seems to come across. In hospital, her son shares a room with another boy whose father is an eccentric Irish sailor (James Nesbitt) and over time, the mother forms a relationship with the sailor. All the while the mother is desperate to save her son, going through all her husband's conquests in a big to find a child he may of fathered and whether or not they would have matching bone marrow. She evens attempts to have a child of her own in the vague hope that they could be a match. Oh, you know how it goes, but this film has the outrageous plot strand involving her husband's infidelity, where he seems to have done half of Melbourne's wives. Preposterous, but amazing seeing the parade of actresses who play his conquests such as Yvonne Strahovski, Madeleine West, Jacinta Stapleton, Krista Vendy, Jane Allsop etc. etc. Other than that, it's your typical disease of the week tale.

The first phase is Hallucinogenic. The second phase is Glandular. The third phase is... Ah, Body Melt, can't believe I've taken this long to rewatch this little gem.

Body Melt is a 1994 horror comedy movie about a super drug that has been developed to improve the overall health of people, but instead just kills them, usually in the most gruesome way possible. A journalist has found out that the company distributing the drug is about to trial on the residents of Pebbles Court and desperately tries to warn them, except he's been injected with a super amount of the drug and dies as enter the street and cannot warn what is about to happen. There's also the original discoverer of the drug, who has mutated and lives with his mutant family on a farm. His brother, a shonky doctor (Ian Smith, Harold from Neighbours, who's a great laugh in this) is desperate to get the drug out. And while all this is happening, one by one, the people of Pebbles Court are dying horrifically. Body Melt is a lot of fun if you're on the level as at no stage is this film serious and the special and makeup effects are as magnificentally awful as they get. And when Harold from Neighbours drops 'Fuck the police', how can anyone not like this film. Seems quite a few don't. No sense of humour, any of them.

I'll be dumping a number of Australian Classics over the next day or two, only because they are all videos as I couldn't make enough caps for collages from them. Not much, but it means I can get rid of them and move on. I feel some HD updates on the horizon.

Coming up the final stretch of Australian Classics for this time. I could probably stretch it out even longer, but you probably want me to move on.

Rebel is a 1985 drama set during World War 2 in Sydney and centering around a club with female dancers and singers who entertain the resting American troops. Kathy (Debra Byrne in a rare film role) is the lead singer of the troupe and Rebel (Matt Dillon) forms a crush on her, but she is married, but he is at war. Rebel pursues Kathy and she gradually falls for his charms, but he has been assigned to a boat and is shipping out. He decides to go AWOL and Kathy hides him in her apartment as the military police look long and hard for him. Very good musical pieces can't hide the fact that the film is a rather stock standard romance with nothing really to recommend it, just a passable film. The director would go on to direct the greatest thing made in this country in Blue Murder. Rebel is a long way from that...

Also, the all-girl band in the movie has a number of sort of known actresses from the period including Joy Smithers, Julie Nihill, Cassandra Delaney, Antoinette Byron and Nikki Coghill. Not bad, not bad at all.

A thanks to all those who helped with my plea to check out the new site: http://www.johnny-moronictv.com/. It's now up and running and all the TV stuff will be posted there from now on (you can also access the site via the front page). If you do run into a problem with viewing the site (like I continue to have...), please tell me.

Just a quickie today.

Brilliant Lies is a drama based on a David Williamson play about a woman (Gia Carides) who is sacked from her job as a secretary which she claims is because she rejected the sexual advances of her boss (Anthony LaPaglia). She is suing the company for $40000 and it becomes a she said/he said case that gets ugly fast. Also, the woman and her sister (Zoe Carides) come to terms with their father's abuse of them. Plays out like a filmed play, but skillfully so by director Richard Franklin (who directed another film based on a play, Hotel Sorrento, the year before). It's very talky and is full of histrionics, but also at times very clever and full of ambiguity. Worth a look if you can overcome the staginess of it.

Today, it's time to go all arty with two films from Australia's premier arty film director Paul Cox.

Exile is a 1994 moody drama about a convicted murderer and sheep stealer Peter Costello (Aden Young), who is sentenced to live on an uninhabitable island after he is given a reprieve from hanging thanks to his lover (Claudia Karvan). He tries to live with what scant items he is given. He dreams of his girlfriend and is visited by a ghost. After a while, his girlfriend's maid (Beth Champion) decides to join and from there, they fall in love and have a child. As usual with a Paul Cox film, not a lot happens. And it is front stacked with his regulars or those who will soon become regulars. It's not a bad film, but you really have to be in the right mood to watch it.

Golden Braid is a 1990 moody drama (cough) about a clockmaker/repairer who is having an affair with a married woman (Gosia Dobrowolska). One day, the clockmaker buys an antique clock and finds a cut off braid inside. He imagines that it is of a gorgeous woman from yesteryear and becomes obsessed with imagining the woman it belongs too, which interferes with the relationship he is having as they begin to blur into one another. Yep, you really have to be in the mood for this one because it does get a little silly, but let's face it, you really know what you're getting into before you watch a Paul Cox film.

OK, let's have some better quality redos of a couple of Australian Classics.

cancer. The family, consisting of 3 daughters and a recently released from prison son, are all of the larger variety and have varying relationships with the other members of the family, particularly the father who seems to alienate everyone. As the mother's condition deteriorates, we find that the relationships wither become closer or more strained. I don't really want to give a detailed account of the movie and that description is very vague, but it's been a few months since I've rewatched it and I can't remember a whole lot about it. I suppose that how interested I am in the film...

Sensitive New Age Killer is a comedy action film set in Melbourne about a hitman who is having quite a number of problems. He is being blackmailed for sex by a policewoman (Carolyn Bock) who knows that he's a hitman, his partner is the shonkiest guy ever, whether it's deliberately stuffing up the hits or blackmailing the hitman's wife (Helen Hopkins) into sex because it turns out the partner is the father of the hitman's child. And the partner is the sleaziest man ever. When a big shot Chinese gangster comes to town, a $1 million dollar bounty is placed on his head and the hitman wants in. Of course, his partner wants him to fail and the policewoman wants her share, so it's up to the hitman to do it alone and against numerous security. This film I do remember and it's a lot of fun. It's very low budget, but it doesn't skimp on the action, even if some of it is completely ludicrous. And definitely influenced by those Hong Kong gunplay action films from the 80s and 90s, which is never a bad thing.

Back to the 80s (awww, not again...)

Dead Easy is a 1982 thriller set in Sydney, mainly around Kings Cross, about a wannabe entrepreneur George (Scott Burgess. Scott Burgess as a leading man? Really...? The 80s were weird) who meets Alex (Rosemary Paul), a prostitute/junkie, who he wants to make a star. George is desperate to get a club going with showgirls being the attraction, but he is thwarted at every turn, either by a lack of funds, a ramshackle show and an ambitious cop who is desperate to shut him down. George falls for Alex and tries to help her out. And a whole heap of other stuff is thrown in with gangsters and corrupt police etc. etc. This film is hard to pin down. It's plot is all over the place. One moment a thriller, the next showing signs of a musical, the next a romantic drama and then back again. It's even more jumbled than the 3rd Underbelly series which was set on the same streets. I would love to tell how it all ends up, but I can't figure it out. All this in only 80 minutes, including credits. Well, the best I can say is at least it's an interesting mess of a film.

The Angie Milliken/Dead Heart stuff has gone down well, so here's more nudity from another actress not afraid to get nude on the screen.

Lilian's Story is a 1996 drama about an eccentric old lady, Lilian (Ruth Cracknell) who is let out of a mental institution after 40 years and tries to find her way back in society. She is way out of her depth, but is also haunted by the demons of her past (younger Lilian played by Toni Collette) and her domineering father (Barry Otto). She is also looking for love and in doing so meets a long lost love who is living in squalor by the sea, in which she shacks up with for a while. When he dies, she goes back to the city and starts making money by reciting Shakespearean sonnets in the park. And finds her own form of cotentment by finally being allowed to live. Based on a true story, the film is a well made tale about starting from nothing and learning to enjoy life after it has been taken away from you. While Ruth Cracknell is great as the older Lilian, Toni Collette, as the younger Lilian, has to do more of the heavy lifting with the more harrowing stuff. Not for everyone, but well worth a look if you're into movies that celebrate life after the hardships.

Let's go to the mid 90s and to where all Australian filmmakers eventually go, the outback...

Dead Heart is a 1996 drama about simmering tensions between white and black people. Local copper Ray Lorkin (Bryan Brown, is there anyone more Australian?) is having a lot of trouble with the locals but even moreso since there was a death of an aboriginal prisoner at his station. To make peace, he allows the father of the dead man to meet out Aboriginal justice on Lorkin's deputy. Meanwhile, a local school teacher's wife, Kate (Angie Milliken) is in the midst of an affair with a young aboriginal man Tony (Aaron Pedersen). One day, Kate and Tony have relations at a sacred Aboriginal site and all hell breaks lose. Even moreso when Tony is found dead from a suspected heart attack that looks like he has been dealt with by Aboriginal law. And now Ray's gonna have a helluva time trying to keep the peace after this particularly when his ally, the local pastor (Ernie Dingo), seems to be heavily involved with Tony's death. Interesting look at the long simmering tensions between white man's and black man's law that was extremely topical at the time of the film's release (there was a spate of Aboriginal deaths in custody in the early to mid 90s). The film is helped along by some strong performances particularly Bryan Brown as the flawed copper just trying to keep the peace. But, it's heavy stuff and the sex scene is quite full on (and makes up the entirety of the collages).

Let's head a few years forward.

The Delinquents is a 1989 drama that begins in Bundaberg in North Queensland in the 50s with Brownie (Charlie Schlatter) who forms a crush on Lola (Kylie Minogue). After initial reluctance from Lola, they fall quickly and deeply in love, then Lola gets pregnant and everything changes. Immediately, Lola is sent away by her mother and Brownie runs away from home to look for her. After a while, he gives up and gets a job on a boat. Later on, he finds her in Melbourne and their relationship begins again, but at every turn their are barriers to this relationship. Will they get through all the hardships and live life together forever? Well... of course they do. An alright romantic drama, probably better suited to those who like these things but the film is perfectly watchable. I do remember a lot of word about the film when it was released, but has been sort of forgotten in the meantime except by the diehard Kylie fans. And boy does Kylie look young here. She must've been about 20.

Back to the Australian Classics, let's head to the mid 80s.

Cassandra is a 1986 horror film about Cassandra (Tessa Humphries, daughter of legendary comedian Barry Humphries of Dame Edna and Sir Les Patterson fame) who is having dreams about a young boy, believed to be her brother, murdering someone she believes to be her mother. She is told that it was just a dream by her parents, but then the killings begin, starting with the the model (Susan Barling) who is dating her father behind her mother's back, then her father. Who could it be? Her father's new assistant. Her barman friend. Someone else. And is it really her long lost brother? Yeah, it's not too hard to work out who it is. Not the greatest slasher film, but not all bad either, although I found it to be a bit boring as not a lot happens. Surprisingly, there's quite a bit of nudity from Susan Barling which helps pass the time I s'pose.

Update for 1 March...

Let's head back to something newer.

Summer Coda is romantic drama about an American girl Heidi (Rachael Taylor) who has come back to her place of birth in Australia to go to the funeral of the father she has not seen for a long time. She hitchhikes her way to the funeral and is met by Michael (Alex Dimitriades), a local orange farmer who offers to drive her to town. At the funeral, Heidi is introduced to her father's new family. She is warded off getting anything out of the family by his widow, so Heidi leaves town. Then, she changes her mind and goes to Michael's place, who makes her lets her stay for a while. Meanwhile, it's orange picking season and a bunch of regular orange pickers camp down by thew river waiting to pick for Michael. Over the next few days, the relationship between Heidi and Michael develops, but there is one thing holding them back. A good romantic film that is a bit of a slow burn, but that's not necessarily a bad thing lathough that might test the patience of some. Has a pretty interesting supporting cast of misfit Australian actors as well.

Oh, and Rachael Taylor shows her breasts, briefly...
