Update for 24 November...
More stuff from the massive backlog.
Drop Dead Gorgeous is a mockumentary about Cynthia (Ivy Levan) who has just been signed to a massive modelling contract. While on a shoot, she dies and all involved begin to panic. Not about someone dying but about what are they going to do with the campaign. So, those involved including the shoot - the designer, her agent, the photographers, various hangers-on and the documentary crew following Cynthia - hatch a plan to continue to use her in the campaign, even though she's dead. They only need her mother's permission and that's the easy part. The hard part is keeping her fresh so that the campaign can be completed. And you never know, it might just work. Pretty much Weekend at Bernie's set in the modelling world, but with even less ethics (it is the modelling industry after all), I really don't know about this film. It isn't really all that funny and everyone is so utterly repulsive that it's hard to get into. I think this film lost me when two women make out pretty much over the freshly dead body and I sailed through the rest of the film not really giving a shit. I tried is the best I can say...

Update for 23 November...
Let's head back to New Zealand.
Jinx Sister is a drama about Laura (Sara Wiseman), who has moved to LA to get away from her past. One night, she wakes up in an alley drunk and looking like she's just had sex and wonders where to go next in her life. She decides to head back to home and try to reconnect with her sister, but she is reluctant to do so as she believes she is a jinx because of past events (including her possibly causing her mother's death). She checks into a hotel where she meets Sam who she begins a relationship with although it seems distant at first. Her sister recognises that something is up and decides to find her. They quickly reconnect, so much so the sister asks Laura to move in with her husband and her daughter. It isn't long before Laura's jinx theory is put to the test when her sister has complications with her unborn child and Laura must decide whether she runs away again or be there for her sister. Solid but fairly undemanding drama with a solid lead performance from Sara Wiseman who has to carry the whole film. Not much to the film, but works well within it's limitations although I think Laura's rise to responsibility seems to come out of nowhere just to tie the film up.

Australian Classics for 20 November...
The weekly Australian Classic has arrived a little early this week.
Oz (subtitled A Rock 'n' Roll Road Movie) is a 1976 rock 'n' roll infused road movie based loosely on The Wizard of Oz (well, loosely enough to not give credit...) about Dorothy (Joy Dunstan, in her one and only movie) who goes with her friend to the local dance hall to see a terrible band Wally and the Falcons play. Told to move on by a sleazy looking bouncer, Dorothy and her friend leave with the band. In the Kombi van, the friend starts making out with the drummer and the driver decides to have a look, only to crash the van. Dorothy gets out of the van and falls unconscious and wakes up in a mirror world where the van she was driving has killed a local thug to the joy of all in town. She goes to a shop and spies a pair of red high heeled shoes which the owner of the store, The Good Fairy (played as a highly camp man, viva la 1970s!), gives to her for killing the thug. She goes down the road looking for a ride to see The Wizard, a glam rock singer played by the lead singer of Wally and the Falcons and meets a dumb surfer dude (Bruce Spence) who gives her a ride. They stop off for something to eat and Dorothy is harassed by a big truck driver, played by the bouncer, who wants to have his way with her for killing his brother. After escaping the truckie, they stop off at a petrol station and are ambushed by a heartless mechanic (Michael Carman) who wants Dorothy all to herself. Also arriving at the station is a bikie (Gary Waddell) who acts all tough but is actually a big coward. All three bounders are the other members of the band. Eventually, they all have to rely on each other to get to Melbourne where Dorothy searches for The Wizard, finding his concert. But, she didn't get to see him. The truckie finds them and kidnaps Dorothy and attempts to force himself on her, only for Dorothy to use her red shoes to kick him in the balls so that she can get away. Eventually, Dorothy meets the Wizard and it turns out he is not what he is cracked up to be.
I don't know how they got away with not crediting L. Frank Baum, coz it follows his tale mighty closely, maybe because the Yellow Brick Road is never mentioned, but is that really enough? This reinterpretation is infused with music of Ross Wilson of Daddy Cool fame, but boy do they beat one song to death on the soundtrack, which gets rather annoying after a while. The film is pretty silly and highly contrived, but that's probably because time hasn't been kind to the film. It is very much of it's time. It's not all bad, everyone seems to be having fun and the performance by The Wizards is quite spectacular, but being bound to the Wizard of Oz template means the film becomes restrained with what it can do. An interesting piece of nostalgia, but not a good film.

Review of Burning Man...
Saw Burning Man today starring British actor Matthew Goode and a whole bunch of Australian actresses who play the many women in the lead's life. Infuriatingly non-linear film that zips in and out and back through various moments in his life that all relate in one way or another to his undying love for Sarah (Bojana Novakovic). Burning Man is a surprisingly good film told very originally, but I was having a hell of a time trying to keep up with the fragments of plot that are coming at you from all different angles. Much better than Sleeping Beauty, if that's a guide...
Anyway, you don't want to know about that, so here's a blow by blow description of the sexy scenes from Burning Man, as best that I can recollect (me lud...).
- Film opens with Tom (Matthew Goode) attempting to masturbate to what looks like an empty bed. He gives up after a while and then we see a woman, apparently named Lesley (although I'm sure this is not mentioned in the film), played by Kate Beahan, sitting up on the bed with her breasts exposed wearing a long curly brunette wig (which will become apparent why she is wearing this later) and offering to suck him off. He declines.
- Miriam (Rachel Griffiths) is getting dressed and we briefly see her breasts exposed as she is putting on her bra. Next we see Miriam in her bra and panties.
- Later, in what looks like what happened before the above Rachel Griffith scene, we see Miriam has sex with Tom with her sitting on top. We see breasts, bum and almost (but not quite) full frontal nudity. The sex scene is interrupted when Tom's son screams at them.
- Tom is at a club where he picks up a woman, whom I sure is played by Kathryn Beck, and he has sex with her in his Volkswagon Beetle. She has he top open with her bra exposed.
- At the hospital, we get our first glimpse of Sarah (played by Bojana Novakovic). She is dead and naked under covers. Tom pulls up the sheet to peer at her naked body and we see her breasts, almost to full frontal nudity. Later in the film, this scene is continued, but we don't see any more of Sarah as the camera angle is to the side.
- A lengthy montage begins with Sarah wearing bra and panties and taking off her bra to reveal her breasts. Throughout the montage, the scene zips in and out of Sarah with her breasts and occasionally bum exposed, having sex with her on top. Tom becomes obsessed with her breasts (who wouldn't...) and this becomes the focus for part of the montage. This includes a scene where she is visiting the doctor, where he checks her exposed breasts for cancerous lumps, which he finds some.
- The montage ends with Tom seeing Lesley, a prostitute, who is sitting atop of Tom with her breasts exposed and wearing a G-string. She is wearing the wig from before, which we now know is to make her look like Sarah. Lesley bounces on top of Tom, but they are not having sex as Tom doesn't seem to be interested.
- We see Lisa (played by Marta Dusseldorp) having sex being taken from behind by Tom. She is wearing a tennis dress and we see plenty of cleavage. She is admiring the marble top on the cabinet during sex. After the sex ends, she moves away, taking off her already slightly down panties.
- Lying in a bed, Tom is admiring a naked Sarah, first her bum which we see from the top down. Eventually, we see Sarah's breasts.
- In another montage, we see Sarah lying on her back with her breasts exposed which looks slightly out of focus. Later, we see Sarah about to give birth to her son and we see her bum with her dress pulled up. Then we see various down blouses in the dress as she is trying to give birth.
- Finally, we see more of the first scene of the film. Lesley is in a sexy nurses uniform and suggests that Tom is going to masturbate on her. Lesley pulls down the zip on the uniform, revealing her breasts, saying that she'd rather want him to cum on her tits and not get the uniform dirty. The scene goes back to the opening scene, this time more of Lesley is scene with her breasts exposed. Later, as he is about to leave her house, he steps on a toy lobster (which reminds him of something between him and Sarah). We see Lesley now with the sexy nurses uniform back on as she talks about her child.
So, while there are not the levels of nudity as in Sleeping Beauty, there is plenty of nudity nonetheless and from 3 actresses.
Burning Man has 5 nude scenes (including a lengthy montage with two different nude scenes) from Bojana Novakovic, 3 nude scenes (2 of which make one long scene) from Kate Beahan and 2 nude scenes from Rachel Griffiths.
The big surprise is that Kate Beahan (overseas audiences might know her from The Wicker Man remake or the Jodie Foster Hitchkockean thriller Flightplan) is naked for the first time on film/TV. Wow, didn't expect that.
So, Burning Man is a very good film that is not easy to follow thanks to a non-linear plot that comes about because apparently Tom is dying after a car accident and is memory is fractured trying to make sense of the memories. But, this film ain't a mindfuck sort of film. What drives the film is the central relationship between Tom and Sarah and how her death from breast cancer affects his life which seems to involve him becoming increasingly unhinged. Well worth a look.

Update for 16 November...
You know, I haven't done a dicey horror film in a while. So here goes...
BreadCrumbs is a horror film about a group of people travelling to a cabin in a woods to film a porno (what other reason would you go to the woods?). At the woods, they meet a creepy brother and sister who seems to have a Hansel and Gretel complex. At nightfall, the brother goes on a rampage and starts killing various members of the group one by one. Famous porn star Angie Hart (Marianne Hagan) is sympathetic to the sister as she seems harmless, but it seems she is not so innocent. But when the children confuse Angie as their mother, Angie may just get out of the woods alive. Maybe... Nothing much to this horror film. Literally all the killing happens in the second act and the third act is so preposterous that I'm wondering how the hell it made the final cut. The girl who played the sister is creepy looking though. And the porno looks absolutely terrible, even for a porno. Meh, not enough killing, not enough tits...
Couldn't be stuffed making caps, not a lot to work with anyway.

Australian Classics for 15 November...
Let's head back to the 80s.
Kitty and the Bagman is a 1983 bawdy comedy/drama set in 1920s Sydney (but bizarrely filmed in Melbourne) about Kitty O'Rourke (Liddy Clark), wife of a bounder who's being arrested by the Bagman (John Stanton), a powerful local cop with his finger in every pie. Kitty's husband is given 5 years jail and poor Kitty is left all on her own. She meets a barmaid Doris (Colette Mann) who helps her get a job as a barmaid. Doris tells Kitty that she must assert herself to get a man now that she's on her own and in the process, she pisses off local entrepreneur Big Lil (Val Lehman). She meets Cyril, a local big noter, who falls for her and has big plans to build his own bar come brothel with Kitty. Just before opening the brothel, the Bagman steps in and solicits control over to Kitty as this is the only way he'll let the brothel open. Now Kitty is about to become a big shot, up against Big Lil, pissing off Cyril who falls for a prostitute Sarah (Kylie Foster). Then, her husband turns up. Oh, and the Bagman has a crush on Kitty. Sound familiar? It will if you watched the latest series of Underbelly: Razor as the plots are mighty similar. Sure, Kitty and the Bagman is nowhere near as sleazy as Underbelly, but neither is it as watchable. Most of the bawdy comedy has dated and is barely funny, but the attention to detail of the period is quite good (this is from the director of Caddie, another film from the same time period about a put upon woman cum barmaid). Not a great film, but if you like a bit of bawdiness, the new widescreen DVD might be worth a look.

Update for 12 November...
You know what? I haven't done a Mexican film in a while, I have a few floating around so let's cap one.
La última y nos vamos follows a group of twenty-somethings on a particularly Friday night in Mexico City. More particularly, it follows three sort of friends over the night. Juan is going to his girlfriends house when he stops off and is approached by a group of men who offer him alcohol and drugs. One gets extremely aggro and in the frenzy of the incident drives away from the scene with 2 of the men. Over the night, he will see the divide between rich (which he apparently is) and the two bounders he has come into contact with. Cristian is a cocksure man out with his friends for the night with plenty of drinking and hopefully some action. At a strip club he meets Lucia (Liz Gallardo) and immediately falls for her. They agree to meet outside of the club. And Rodrigo has snuck out of the house to get away from his overprotective mother for the first time since he was beaten up pretty badly. With nowhere to go and nothing to do, he stays on a bus and becomes friendly with the driver (Montserrat de León). You know how much I love ensemble dramas and this movie is a rather insignificant one where rich characters seem to learning lessons from poor characters or some such. The stories aren't particularly interesting, but aren't boring either, they're just stories. Not bad, but certainly not memorable either.
And I like Liz Gallardo, capped her a few times now, so it's nice to see her again.

Australian Classics for 8 November...
As promised the other Aleksandra Vucjic film, her Australian film.
Dear Claudia is a 1999 desert island set romantic comedy about Walter (Bryan Brown), a post office pilot and Claudia (Aleksandra Vucjic), his mysterious passenger Walter has a crush on. When the plane Walter was piloting crashes into the water, Walter and Claudia are stuck on a desert island. While waiting to be discovered, Walter and Claudia bicker and make up, mainly around Walter sabotaging various attempts at warning nearby craft because he wants to spend more time with Claudia. Also about the mail that they have with them. It seems that both are desperate to get away from their lives. And the Claudia has stolen 20 gold bars that she is going to fence if they ever get off the island. Meanwhile, back in the small town they are from, there is plenty of gossip about the two and the wild adventures they are apparently having. A throwaway romantic comedy that is helped by two decent lead performances who have to carry the entire film. Nothing new here, but there are plenty worse around. Good luck finding the film... My DVD copy I sourced from Hong Kong and it's only slightly better than VHS copied to DVD.
I'm afraid that ends our journey down memory lane with Aleksandra Vucjic, she only made 4 films and only has small roles in 2 American B-thrillers. Ah, it was good while it lasted.

Update for 5 November...
OK, haven't been to New Zealand in a while, so let's do so.
Broken English is a New Zealand drama made in the aftermath of Once Were Warriors and hitting on similar themes. Nina (Aleksandra Vucjic, startlingly good on debut) is a early 20s girl who has settled comfortably into Auckland after leaving war-torn Croatia. The head of the family is Ivan (Rade Serbedzija, always good), a brutal man who is pissed off he is in New Zealand and not at home. He rules the family with an iron fist, but Nina has a soft spot for feisty Nina. During a particularly volatile night, Nina goes off the work at a Chinese restaurant and spies Eddie (Julian Arahanga) the new cook and instantly falls for him. They have a whirlwind romance which leads to Nina leaving home to live with Eddie. She also becomes involved in a sham marriage for a friend so that they can get citizenship and she can get some fast money. When the family have a party, Nina invites Eddie and friends and this doesn't end well at all as Eddie decides to leave Nina and go back home. Oh, and Nina is pregnant and when she visits him in his home town and they get back together and all this is not going to please daddy, who will go to desperate measures to 'save' his daughter. But, Eddie isn't leaving Nina without a fight. Superb drama with excellent performances all round that bizarrely has an NC-17 rating in America. Yes, the sex scene is full on, but it's hardly explicit...
Aleksandra Vucjic's career is an oddity. She only made 4 films including her fascinating debut and 2 of those are dicey B American thrillers and the other one, Dear Claudia, is a long forgotten Australian desert island romantic comedy where she matches surprisingly well with Bryan Brown. Must've gotten a better offer elsewhere I s'pose. Oh, by the way, Dear Claudia will be the Australian Classic for this week, a film not available on DVD in this country.

Update for 2 November...
I'm usually slack on one side of the site, it's movies at the moment, so here's a quickie to tide you over.
The Family Tree is an ensemble comedy drama (my favourite type of film /sarcasm... for the moment) about a family on the rocks. Jack Burnett (Dermot Mulroney) is working in a job he hates and is now working with a former flame (Gabrielle Anwar) to cut back the work force. He is also fantasising about the buxom secretary (Christina Hendricks) and is seriously considering acting on them. His wife Bunnie (Hope Davis) is ignoring him and busy forging her place in the social scene, while getting a bit on the side from the neighbour (Chi McBride). Kelly (Brittany Robertson) is failing school miserably and is at war with her mother. And Eric (Max Thieriot) is a bible thumping, gun toting outcast who is hanging out with fellow bible thumpers who are just drug fiends. Well, this family is about to combust until Bunnie is knocked unconscious during sex with the neighbour and gets amnesia forgetting pretty much the last 20 years of her life. Maybe this family can save itself, if only they can keep their secrets secret... This type of film has been done to death and nothing new happens here. There's a strange vibe to this film as everything looks as though it is set in the 70s, but is actually set in the present. What can I say other than it's just not worth the time.
