Redux Friday goes obscure (again)...

Still heading back to the archive and pulling out and redoing some old stuff.

Me Without You seems like it was from an eternity ago, but it's from 2001 (I capped it in 2003). I picked it up again in 2009 and made videos from it and now I finally have gotten around to recapping it in far better quality. Had to edit some of the videos because I kept a fair bit of talking scenes for some reason. Interesting that the film has a number of small scenes of nudity scattered throughout the film, particularly from Anna Friel and of course, Michelle Williams' first nude scenes (there's been a quite a few since).

Also below is another large cap made from a number of raw caps of the Michelle Williams dream sequence.

Tomorrow, I'll have an Australian redux ready (and in HD too!), something I haven't done in quite a while. Just worked out I have about 80 Australian movies from before I started making seamless collages and videos that I need to redo, so plenty more to do I s'pose.

Update for 24 June...

More new films.

Ecstasy is a drama about a group of people and their experiences with a potent party drug. A mother is struggling under the burden of working night shift and looking after her two troublesome daughters. Diana (Elisa King), a former drug addict, her younger sister Chantel (Ashley McCarthy) and Diana's friend Faye (Teagan Vincze) go to a club and are offered a potent party drug which each takes. At the club, Chantel falls ill and is taken to the toilets by a sleazy Scott who possibly rapes her (I'd say he does, but the film is very uneven about it). Diana falls into her old habits and Faye's body issues become worse. Chantel becomes pregnant from the assault, but doesn't tell her mother, so she copes by continuing to take the drug until she becomes so out of it she kills herself. Meanwhile caught somewhere in the middle is David, a religious friend of the girls who turns to a priest for guidance, but finds out that the priest is lacing the communal wine with said drug. Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, this film is magnificiently awful. It is very reminiscent of Reefer Madness but for party drugs, but even sillier and far more questionable in what it's trying to present. I'd debate whether it's trying to be a morally correct film because it's consequences seems far too ridiculous. And the topper is the priest drugging his congregate. If you want to see a film that will have you rolling on the floor in laughter at how over-the-top stupid it is, Ecstasy is that film. Enjoy!

Update for 22 June...

You know what I haven't capped in a while. A new Australian film.

Birthday is a drama focusing on various prostitutes in a brothel and some of their clients on the birthday of popular prostitute M (Natalie Eleftheriadis). Lonely on her birthday, she recalls various moments in her life that got her to where she is today, starting with an enthralled Lily (Kestie Morassi) and then helping a priest who has lost his faith (Travis McMahon). Meanwhile, Cindy (Ra Chapman, good as a shy girl in the recently released Face to Face) is right on the edge, bringing her young child to work and taking drugs and drinking alcohol. Cindy is fired after vomiting on a client, but has nowhere to go and she doesn't want anyone to know, even M, who helps her out. Finally, Joey (Richard Wilson), who is also having his birthday, is still struggling with the suicide of his mother and is lonely, seeking solace with the priest and when he finds a business card for the brothel with M's details on it, he decides to go there. Unexpectedly, Joey and M will help each other out. Birthday is based on a play and plays out very much like one, but that is not a bad thing in this case. From the director of Shot of Love, a film I remember quite liking, Birthday also features a very strong female lead with the veritable unknown Natalie Eleftheriadis. This film is about eschews the usual brothel cliches and focuses on finding love in the simplest things and remembering lost loves that have had profound impact on the various character's lives. At times, Birthday is quite confronting, but not because of the sex and nudity or the subject matter of prostitution, which there is little of, but the raw feelings that are shown. The film has been struggling for a release, but now that it is finally on DVD it is well worth a look (and hopefully not hard to find).

Update for 17 June...

A Dangerous Method is a biographical drama focusing on the relationship between three key people in the development of psychiatry. Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) is using the methods of the father of psychiatry, Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). Everything changes when Jung comes in contact with new patient Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), a woman suffering from extreme hysteria. Sabina is an extremely intelligent woman and Jung encourages her to work for him, where she decides that she will become a doctor. Over time, the married Jung falls for Sabina and they begin an affair which seems to be a continuation of her psychoanalysis as Jung encourages her sexual gratification from being spanked, something she developed from years of violent abuse from her father. Jung goes to America to meet Freud where they develop an intellectual kinship, but as Jung's relationships between both Freud and Sabina develops, Jung's psychoanalytical method begin to emerge into something that is very different from Freud's. Or something... I've gotta admit, psychiatry is about as exciting to me as watching paint dry and this film did absolutely nothing for me. And I usually love David Cronenberg films, but this film and the subject manner just isn't up my alley. But, the thing that lost me even more was Keira Knightley's acting. Again, I usually love Keira Knightley, she always brings something to her roles, but she is so out of her depth here it's excruciating to watch. The hysterical acting is embarrassing to watch and her character's accent is from somewhere not on this planet. Ah well, I tried, I really did, I watched A Dangerous Method all the way through, but got nothing out of it, even when mad old Vincent Cassel turns up and fucks up the place as he always does. Shame...

Ha, since watching A Dangerous Method, I've had the 'pleasure' of watching the 1974 Australian film Between Wars about a Freudian psychiatrist in Australia between World War I and World War II and is so baffling that I can't wait tell you about it once I get some clips ready.

Update for 12 June...

You know I love a B movie, so let's go down that road today.

Cassadaga is a horror thriller about Lily (Kelen Coleman), a deaf girl who is still getting over the tragic death of her younger sister. She is awarded a scholarship and goes to live with Claire (Louise Fletcher) and her weirdo son Thomas. One day, a young student at one of her classes drags her single dad Mike (Kevin Alejandro) over to meet her and they click. During a date where they meet Mike's friends, they decide to go to do a seance in Cassadaga, where Lily decides to contact her sister. But, things go wrong and a vengeful ghost enters and things start to go awry for Lily. She starts seeing images of a dead woman and the only way to stop this is to stop her killer, who seems to like to turn women into puppets before killing them. Actually, I quite liked Cassadaga, it may be pretty stock standard stuff and the serial killings are pretty out there, not to mention the opening scene with a gender confused boy cutting off his penis, but it works. Kelen Coleman is really good in the lead playing a deaf girl (but not mute) and I've gotta admit I quite like the look of her. It's not perfect, but Cassadaga is definitely worth a look.

Redux Friday a tad late...

Another forgotten film from the early decade, which I first capped in 2003. Rewatching the film, it reminded me of the only decent scene in the film, a set piece with the Joanne Whalley's psychiatrist character luring the abusive husband of her patient to a park, strips naked to reduce chance of evidence and slits his throat. But, it has a bizarre thing that I don't think has happened before, that being that both Joanne and her body double actually show nudity in the same scene. Strange, strange indeed. Interesting idea for the film and Joanne plays a perfectionist borderline nutcase psychiatrist pretty darn well, but the film is overlong and takes forever to get going. Ah well, this will be my last time dealing with the film...

Update for 7 June...

As I've said recently, haven't had the time to do full blown series like I usually do, but I'll keep plugging along.

Bad Meat is an attempt at horror comedy about a group of teens that are sent to a boot camp in the middle of nowhere to straighten them out. Except this one is run by a bunch of arseholes (ha ha, aren't they all...) and they are probably more likely to make them worse. After a day of particular torture, the 'counsellors' and the prisoners settle down for dinner, the counsellors given a pretty good looking stew and the prisoners gruel or something close to gruel. Later that night, the cook quits with a big 'Fuck You', the counsellors fall violently ill and the next morning they don't wake up the prisoners, so the prisoners go to investigate, only to find the counsellors pretty much dead. Then the counsellors wake up and turn into cannibals and they are going to really straighten out these kids. Hmm, Bad Meat was filmed in 2008 and well, it becomes obvious that there were problems as the ending just ends suddenly, a character pretty much disappears and there's scenes added on of a person all bandaged up in hospital that feature none of the original actors. But, it's not all bad, there's some genuine humour for a while and the film has this bizarre feel about it that makes it interesting and I wonder how this film would've gone if they had the resources. But, as it is Bad Meat is a mess and how the makers salvaged what they did is anyone's guess.

Redux Friday for 1 June...

Another lost film, this time the UK/French co-production 3 Blind Mice, a film about snuff films being made against people with webcams for a willing audience. This film is from 2003 and it feels like a relic with dial-up still being used, poor quality webcam images and websites looking boxy. Also, there's plenty of gratuitous nudity particularly from Emilia Fox, a surprise for a film like this. But, the ending is so baffling and seems to come out of nowhere and I don't get the point of making Emilia Fox's character out to be who she is, then turn it around only for her to get shot in the middle of a zoo. And let's not get into the idea of snuff films...
