Australian Classics for 29 May...

Today, Australian Classics bring two low budget films that got sequels, not very good sequels, but they got sequels none the less.

Aussie Park Boyz is a 2004 gang action drama about Pep who heads the Aussie Park Boyz out of Osborne Park in Perth, a group of mostly Italians, who go around picking fights for money against other rag tag gangs in the area. Pep vouches for Cam, a hothead who thinks with his fists rather than his head. The two go are sent to a drug deal by local kingpin Jimmy, but it goes wrong and Cam beats one guy to death. Pep and Cam are arrested on the spot and serve 16 months in prison where they barely survive the Maori run prison. Two years after their release from prison, Pep and Cam and a bunch of Aussie Park Boyz head across town for some reason (something to do with tickets, I dunno...) where they are spotted by the brother of the man Cam beat to death and the brother goes ballistic. He sets up a plan to frame Cam for the rape of the head of the Maori gang's girl so that they can get him. But, that's the least of the Aussie Park Boyz problem because every gang in the area wants a piece of the Boyz. It's going to be a long night. I have no problem with low budget films in general and try to judge them on merit, but Aussie Park Boyz is appalling for the most part. The first 20 minutes is unwatchable, there is so much ridiculous posing going on I fully expected someone to bust a vein in their forehead. But, once all the bullshit is done and the film inevitably turns into a Warriors knock off, this film gets better, not by much, but at least it rips off the right film. It even has a fairly tragic ending which sets up the second film. If you want to watch this film, I recommend skipping the first 45-50 minutes and watching the low budget Warriors action.

Aussie Park Boyz 2: The Next Chapter has just been released and follows Pep and Cam 10 years on from that fateful night. Pep has just arrived home from the US and surprises the much older looking Boyz at a BBQ. He's looking well, but the same can't be said for Cam, who hasn't gotten over the brutal murder of his brother on that fateful night. Now a broken down fighter in kingpin Jimmy's underground fights, he is drinking himself into oblivion while being pumped full of steroids by Jimmy. After another shitty fight, Cam takes it out on Jimmy, in which Jimmy shoots him and leaves him for dead. He is found and nursed back to health by an Aboriginal healer, who tells Cam that he must rest his demons by finding the remains of his brother and give him a proper burial. Cam recruits Pep to go to the other side of town to get the remains, but the Boyz convince them to come along and help. But, times have changed. Now, gangs don't fight with their fists, they fight with guns and this is going to be another long day for the Aussie Park Boyz. There's a very sombre feel to the sequel that is nostalgic for the old days and it all seems very strange. Again, this film is better when they head to the other side of town, but that's not saying much. At least there's some improvement here over the original and the bigger budget shows. Not a good film, but a film that does try for something more nonetheless.

Summer City is a 1977 coming of age surfing drama cum revenge thriller (yes, really) starring Mel Gibson and Steve Bisley when they were still in acting school. Four boys, sensible Sandy (John Jarratt), skirt chasing smart arse Boo (Steve Bisley), pretty boy Scollop (Mel Gibson) and tag along Robbie (writer/producer Phil Avalon), go for a surfing weekend. After having some fun and getting into a little trouble, they arrive at their destination and spy Caroline (Debbie Forman), whose lives at a boarding house run by her overprotective father. That night, they go to a dance and Boo becomes smitten with Caroline and takes her to the town's water tank where they have sex. The next day, the boys go for a surf, but Caroline thinks that she is pregnant. Her father hits the roof and goes about hunting down the boys and it's not going to end well. Completely strange film that surprisingly works well. There's an end of the world feel about it the entire film that would seem completely out of place, but it gives the film a bizarre originality that surely has never been seen in a surfing film ever. Hell, there isn't even a lot of surfing going on. The stand out here is Bisley, who gives Boo a gusto that seems lacking with the other characters. Jarratt, who was the biggest name in the cast, seems muted and Gibson doesn't have a lot to do other than have dyed hair, but he sure does look pretty. This film is seems to be missing something and there's a fair bit of padding going on (apparently because the actors walked from the film before filming finished), but what has been scraped together is near impossible to describe fully, but for it's shortcomings, Summer City works, buggered if I know how...

Breaking Loose (unofficially Summer City 2) bafflingly was recently released on DVD even though I'm very sure no one gives a shit. Released in 1988, it follows Ross (Peter Phelps) who is studying to be a doctor. His mother is Caroline (not played by Debbie Forman) and yes Ross was the baby in question from the original. At a party Ross attends, it is gatecrashed by Sampson (Shane Feeney-Connor) and his gang of only in the 80s bikies. Ross tries to get rid of them and gets into a fight with Skunk and ends with Sampson determining that they should have a car race to solve the issue. But it goes wrong and Skunk is left for dead. Meanwhile, Robbie (now played by Vince Martin) visits and offer to help Ross, which is taken up when Sampson decides that if Skunk dies, Ross dies. Ross heads to the beach to be with Robbie and his friend Davie (David Ngoombujarra). Ross heads into town and meets Helen (Abigail, reprising her cameo character for the original) who is still unhappily married to her abusive husband, and he falls for her but before they fully get together, Helen offers to put up Ross, which he accepts. So, when he is not trying to save Helen from her thug of a husband, he is helping Robbie and Davie in their fight against the local cops who have it in for them. Then, Skunk dies and it's time for revenge. Oh dear, this is an absolutely terrible film, not redeemable in any way. This film is so by-the-numbers, but that's not usually a problem, but the plot is pretty forgettable and the characters are not even worth mentioning (but I will). As I said above, the bikie gang is a joke, a laughable motley crew and Ross is a complete drip. Terrible film, hopefully the last you'll hear about it.

Not a lot to cap from the 4 movies, probably wrote more than necessary, but what else is new.

Redux Friday has a three way...

I capped over a thousand films in the last 10 years and it still amazes me what films I only remember because I capped them at some stage. I mean, who remembers the film from today's redux series Three Way? Admittedly, this is a straight-to-DVD B movie, but it has a pretty notable cast and is not a bad movie except for the rather ridiculous ending. And I remember it as if I watched it yesterday. Strange...

I'm hoping to bring back the regular Redux Friday with quality stuff from series I made collages of eons ago. Last week was The In Crowd, this week is Three Way and I have a few lined up over the next few Fridays. So, something to look forward to...

Update for 22 May...

Maskerade is a horror thriler about two university students Jennifer (Nikki Deloach) and Evan, who are long term lovers. On her birthday, Evan decides to give Jennifer an extra special present, an old house that they could do up and sell for a handsome profit. But, this house is has a past that doesn't want to go away. Seems the former lady of the house was killed when she tries to sacrifice a child and her deformed son decides to get revenge on everyone. He was also apparently killed, but it comes clear that he very much alive. Jennifer and Evan invite their friends up to help fix the house and their friends just use it to get up to various sexcapades, which ticks off the deformed son. So, who's going to survive the weekend and who's going to have their face cut off so the deformed son can have a 'normal' face? Yeah, good luck with that. Maskerade is a stock standard horror film, nothing special, but not bad, but boy does it love the gruesome stuff. Some of the slayings are particularly nasty and the cutting off of people's faces not much better. So, if you like your gory killings, this film has a few for you.

Update for 21 May...

The Samaritan is a thriller about Foley (Samuel L. Jackson), a former conman who has just been released from prison after serving 25 years for killing his former partner. Determined to go straight, it turns out that it's going to be impossible to do so because the son of the man he killed, Ethan, wants to perform a massive con on his boss (Tom Wilkinson). Ethan gets the much younger Iris (Ruth Negga) to 'help' with his transition back into society, but after initial refusal, Foley stops her from being raped and a spark is drawn between the two and then a relationship begins. But, Ethan is desperate to get Foley in on his scam and he has one hell of a surprise for Foley (think Oldboy...). Foley eventually relents, but this scam is going to go down his way, except this scam is not going to go as planned, it never was. An OK thriller with Samuel L. bringing his A game even though the film doesn't necessarily warrant it (and he hasn't necessarily brought his best to films in recent times). There's so many twists in this film, particularly in the end that you really do wonder how the film is going to end and it actually isn't too bad. Worth a look, but nothing special. I'll admit to mainly watching it for Ruth Negga, who I really like from series 2 of Misfits and she's quite good in this film. matching it quite well with Samuel L., even when their relationship changes. And a little nudity always helps.

Redux Friday for 18 May...

Sorry I haven't been able to cap movies over the past couple of weeks, I've been busy elsewhere and will be for a little while longer, so probably won't be any big updates coming up.

Would you believe that The In Crowd is 12 years old? Just looking at my records and I first capped this film in June 2003. And man does the DVD look old. The darker scenes are not great and it doesn't help that some scenes are filmed during the day but have this rotten dark filter on them that renders them darker than the dark scenes. There's one baffling scene set at night where it's extremely dark and there are no lights or fires, but a beach party is happening as if it's midday. But, the most baffling thing is that there are two topless scenes in a PG-13 film. That doesn't happen anymore and I can't remember the last time that has happened.

Once a year a dicey teen thriller starring hot up and comers gets a token cinema release (last year it was The Roommate, I wonder what this year's is?) and this seems to be the year 2000's entry. A pretty ordinary film on reflection, but if there's a stand out, it's Susan Ward's omnipresent, bisexual, lip gloss overdosing nutcase.

Australian Classics for 8 May...

Back to the 1970s today.

Long Weekend is a 1978 man versus nature two hander horror thriller about squabbling couple Peter and Marcia (John Hargreaves and Briony Behets) who go on a camping weekend with their trusty dog Cricket, much to the disappointment of Marcia who would rather be in a comfy motel room. You see Marcia recently had a miscarriage and is finding it hard to be close to Peter. Right from the start it is clear that the environment is not what it seems and both Peter and Marcia treat it with disdain with Peter shooting or running over anything animal while Marcia takes it out on the insects. Then, the environment takes out it's revenge and good luck escaping. Well ahead of it's time, particularly with environmental issues being it's core theme, Long Weekend is a solid, well-written thriller but boy is it heavy-handed. Geez, even Greenpeace isn't this overbearing, but it doesn't take a whole lot away from the generally creepy atmosphere the film works in. Long Weekend has recently been remade almost shot for shot only a couple of years back, which I capped back in August 2009 and is also pretty good, but I prefer the original if only for it features one of my favourite cinema victims Briony Behets in probably her best victim role. Recently just saw her fall down some stairs while pregnant in an early episode of Number 96, so the hits keep on coming for poor Briony.

Update for 6 May...

Over the Britain today.

The Wicker Tree is a companion piece to the 1970s oddball classic The Wicker Man from the same director, this time following Beth Boothby (cute newcomer Brittania Nicol), a former saucy American country and western singer now a reformed, virginal gospel singer and her cowboy boyfriend Steve. Now working for the Lord, Beth is accepts an offer to travel to a rural town in Scotland to spread the word of God door-to-door. They are having not a lot of luck until they meet Sir Lachlan Morrison and his wife Delia who are elders in a local town and they accept Beth and Steve with open arms. But, there is something sinister about this welcome and as Beth and Steve are seduced by the town's warmth, plans are under way to sacrifice the both of the them so that the women can breed again. Or something... The original Wicker Man is something out of the box, a superb and completely horrifying yet inherently strange film that still seems relevant. The Wicker Tree is a snorefest with nothing new to say, hell even the absolutely terrible but strangely watchable 2006 remake with Nicolas Cage is more interesting than this. The whole subplot with Honeysuckle Weeks' character is completely pointless and her last second turnaround just embarrassing. In the original, you never quite know how it is all going to end, but here, you know and because you know, the director completely changed it and it's just a big ol' meh. Give me a bear bating, bee mask wearing and woman punching Wicker Man every day of the week over this. Or, go watch the similarly themed and completely off the richter scale nuts Kill List, which is a vastly superior film and has an ending which I think even tops the original Wicker Man.

Update for 3 May...

Alright, back to the movies.

The People I've Slept With is a well, romantic sex comedy about Angela (Karin Anna Cheung) who likes to sleep around a lot. Angela also catalogues her endeavours by taking a photo of her conquests, which is perfect because she's gonna need them. Yep, she's pregnant and she doesn't know who the father is. So with the help of her gay best friend Gabriel, also with his own love woes and he also drunkenly slept with Angela, they go about getting samples from the possible suspects including a now dead guy. In the meantime, Angela falls head over heels for political candidate Jefferson (who could also be the father), so will they get together and is her dream guy the father of her baby? Hmm... The People I've Slept With is a different take on the usual romantic tropes, but still not interesting enough to break the mould. In fact, it's pretty sleazy at times and the relationships don't seem all that realistic at all, particularly Angela's relationship with conservative candidate Jefferson. Ah well...
