Update for 28 July...

Being a week since I've put something on the movie side, so here's one I've been working on for a while. OK, gotta be honest, I saw Siren that long ago (caps say 1/1/2012...) that I can't remember much above the basic plot of a couple looking for adventure and a tag-along ex-boyfriend go on a boat ride and respond to a manic man in distress. They then spot a hottie Silka (Tereza Srbova) on the island and try to get her to leave, but she wants them to stay as she is some sort of siren that lures men to their death. Something like that. And there's some lesbian action, which I'm not sure whether ancient Greek mythological sirens were into, but who knows, records are spotty at best... Only really capped this for Anna Skellern, who I've liked ever since she turned up in series 2 with her proper Aussie accent in Lip Service. The lesbian action here must have been a warm-up for what she had to do in Lip Service.

Australian Classics for 16 July...

Today, it's time to head back to vault for an all-time Australian nudity classic, Sirens, just released on Bluray.

Sirens is a 1994 light comedy/drama set in the 1930s where young English reverend Anthony Campion (Hugh Grant) is asked by his church to visit notorious artist Norman Lindsay (Sam Neill) and talk him into replacing controversial paintings including ones that are considered sacrilegious with more conservative paintings. The reverend takes his wife Estella (Tara Fitzgerald) to Lindsay's home in the Blue Mountains for what is supposed to be a one night stay, but the train is delayed indefinitely. Over their stay, the Campions are treated to a lifestyle they are not accustomed to. The reverend is finding it impossible to talk Lindsay around. Meanwhile, Estella hangs around with Lindsay's models Sheila (Elle Macpherson), Pru (Kate Fischer) and the live-in maid Giddy (Portia de Rossi) and her eyes are opened to her own sexuality, which she has repressed because of her lifestyle. It's going to be a helluva stay. I've got a confession to make. I have never actually seen Sirens in full before recently watching it and I gotta say I was fairly surprised by it. From John Duigan, who I have had an appreciation for thanks to The Year My Voice Broke and is always an interesting director even in his lesser films, Sirens is a warm and honest film about sexuality and how it plays a part in art and life. The actors are all uniformly good, even the first time actresses playing the models, but the film is driven by Grant and Fitzgerald and both actors are well cast here. Definitely better than it's wink-wink nudge-nudge reputation, but if you just like that, there's plenty of nudity in this movie, that's for sure.

Update for 15 July...

The hard drive is full of stuff that I should get around to eventually, so today's update is one such example. And talk about unnecessary remakes, Straw Dogs is an all-timer, a movie that's considerably tamer than the original, which is over 40 years old. I haven't seen the original in a while, but when I first saw Straw Dogs, it left quite the impression on me, a stunningly brutal and highly ambiguous movie from when director Sam Peckinpah was in full flight. Had no idea what I was in for and it left me reeling. Sadly, I knew what was coming in the remake, a clumsy movie that takes all the bare bones of the original and leaves behind everything that made the original so good in the first place. In fact, the entire final act is just embarrassing, even with James Woods bringing his patented nutbaggery. Bah, now I'm going to go back and watch the original to see if it's as good as I remember it to be and to get rid of this terrible feeling I have...

Today's redo continues the unofficial horror theme, but this time goes back to one of the very early series of this site. It's been 11 years since I've seen The Pool, a Prague set, German made, international English slasher thriller and it's pretty much as I remember it quality wise (well, it ain't good and signposts things far too easily), but while I remembered that Isla Fisher was in it (and briefly at that), I'd totally forgot that James McAvoy is in the movie, before he kicked on big time. Update for 11 July...

Unofficial horror week continues unabated.

Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the saga picking up from where the 1974 film finished but with a baby taken from one of the Sawyer family and is stolen by two locals desperate for their own child. Now all grown up in 2012 (never mind the massive timeline glitch...), that child is now Heather Miller (Alexandra Daddario) and she gets some unexpected news that her blood grandmother has just died and bequeathed her house to Heather. With her boyfriend Ryan (Trey Songz), her best friend Nikki (Tania Raymonde) and her boyfriend Kenny (Keram Malicki-Sanchez) and eventually a hitchhiker Darryl (Shaun Sipos), they go on a road trip to the grandmother's Texas estate, which is quite the opulent place. While the gang are in town getting supplies, Darryl is left behind and it turns out he's a thief and he steal anything not bolted down, then he goes downstairs and opens a door that unleashes good old Leatherface, still alive after all this time and that when the killing starts (again). There also seems to be some continuing acrimony between the townsfolk and the Sawyer family and it's all going to come to a head in the night. Not exactly breaking new ground here with this film and plays more like teen horror thriller than a Texas Chainsaw movie, but it does have one very effective moment when Leatherface chases Heather through a carnival. Other than that it's another horror movie beholden to this 3D gimmick, so there's cheesy moments to accommodate that. Really, how many times can a chainsaw be thrown or put through the screen before you just expect it? Ah well, at least Alexandra and Tania are looking pretty darn good, that a big plus...

Update for 9 July...

More new stuff today in this unofficial horror week.

Love Bite is a werewolf comedy film following Jamie (Ed Speleers), who with his mates are planning on getting some action in the summer after they finish school. It's not going well until Jamie meets Juliana (Jessica Szohr), a nomadic travel blogger who seems to disappear at inopportune moments. Well, they fall for each other, but at the same time there are some mysterious disappearances including one of Jamie's friends. Jamie is then told my a self-proclaimed werewolf hunter Sid (Timothy Spall) that there's a werewolf in town and is after virgin victim, which is bad news for Jamie. At the same time, Juliana disappears and Sid suspects that she's a werewolf, then word gets out about the werewolf thing, which means his big-talking friends are now desperate to get laid. Can the boys get laid before being eviscerated? Is Juliana a werewolf? Hmmm... An OK film with a few laughs, but nothing other films haven't done better, but worth a look if you like your horror comedies.

Update for 8 July...

Been a while, but I've had issues with busted hard drives and space, so I wasn't able to make HD videos until that was resolved. But, I'm back now.

Love Sick Love is a twisted Fatal Attraction-like thriller about Dori (Katia Winter), who has fallen head over heels for successful businessman Norman (Matthew Settle), but from the beginning there seems something off with the very clingy Dori. After enticing Norman to her family cabin for the weekend, the nightmare begins for Norman. Turns out Dori has two kids and they have unexpectedly joined them at the cabin along with her grandparents. Norman is having none of this, but he has no choice when Dori knocks him out and chains him up. And the kids and grandparents don't seem to mind either. The kids love having a daddy and the grandparents love seeing Dori happy after all the other men that have left her... A not bad and strangely darkly humourous thriller where the family dynamic is something not far removed from the family in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (well, without the cannibals). Not wholly successful, but worth a look if you're interested in this type of movie. And it's always good to see M. Emmet Walsh still kicking around.

Sadly, the HD copy of the movie I have is very dark, which really effects the brief bush scene below. I'll see if I can find a better copy, but the scene is extremely brief and dark anyway, so I doubt you'd see much in a better copy anyway.
