Update for 29 December...

Another Spanish movie, this one with a shitload of nudity from Verónica Sánchez, not for the first time either. Didn't have subtitles for the movie, but from what I gathered, it's about a woman who is desperate for male companionship and finds it with a TV host then she meets his friend and falls for him as well. She then tries to work out which one she wants. Or something like that... Ha, that's why you don't review movies that you don't really watch.

Update for 28 December...

Here's another Spanish movie, this one with an English actress.

10.000Km is a drama about lovers Alex and Sergi (Natalia Tena and David Verdaguer) who are very deeply in love with one another and then Alex, who has been struggling to find work, is offered a job teaching in the United States for a year, meaning that the lovers will have to continue a long distance relationship. It becomes clear that it is going to be tough to carry on the relationship via Skype and when they do talk to each other, it's pretty much only about their relationship. Can their relationship survive the year apart? Not a lot to the movie as it's basically a two-hander about their relationship and the loneliness of being apart. But, it is quite ambitious at presenting what looks to be a boring proposition. The movie opens with a 24 minute one take scene that goes about defining their relationship and is quite something to watch. The rest of the movie doesn't quite reach that epic portrayal, but the movie does well expressing the loneliness and boredom of being without the one you love. Definitely not a movie for someone with little patience, but something very different.

Below, I have captured pretty much the entire opening 24 minutes as Natalia Tena wears a flimsy top and underwear throughout with some brief nudity and a lengthy and intense sex scene to begin with. Had to split it into two part, but they are large in size, so watch out for that. Sadly, there's only brief bouts of nudity throughout, a shame considering Natalia has done a fair bit of nudity in other movies. Ah well... Also, never clicked with me that she had Spanish heritage for some reason as she speaks Spanish for most of the movie, but it really is quite obvious, derrr...

Update for 26 December...

Sort of a mini-Spanish update as I don't have a lot ready to cap and all three of these movies were pretty quick. Some quick synopses of the movies - Hermosa Juventud is a social realist drama about a young couple who are struggling to get by and it gets worse when the woman becomes pregnant and has the child. A couple of times the girl (Ingrid García-Jonsson) does some porn to get a bit of money. La Cueva is a survivalist thriller where a group of friends go camping when they find a cave and do some exploring except they get lost and can't find their way out. 321 Días en Michigan is a prison drama about a man serving a 2 year jail sentence for fraud, but is so desperate to cover this up that he tells his friends he's gone to America to do an MBA. In jail, he tries to get by and does a little teaching in the women's part of the prison, where he falls in love with one of the female prisoners. Also, it's looking like he's going to get early release from prison, so now he desperately has to hush up the inmates that he's been in prison. Heh...

Update for 22 December...

Horns is a absurd fantasy thriller where Ig (Daniel Radcliffe) is mourning the loss of the love of his life, Merrin (Juno Temple) after she was murdered. But, he's been charged with her murder and everyone in town thinks he killed her except his lawyer and good friend Lee (Max Minghella). As he escapes the town's and media's scrutiny, he has a one night stand with barmaid Glenna (Kelli Garner) and the next morning he wakes up and discovers that he has horns on his head, like the devil. These new found horns cause people to reveal their true desires to him and what he finds with the people he meets including his brother Terry (Joe Anderson) and his parents is quite disturbing, but it also helps him in discovering who really did murder Merrin. The answer might be closer to home than he realises. Bizarre movie which has an unique take on the murder mystery and a fair amount of absurd humour along the way. That's not the say that there's still a bit of nasty stuff along the way, but that what makes Horns a wild ride. Definitely one for the 'What the hell did I just watch file?', but I liked it nonetheless.

Update for 18 December...

A couple of quick series today.

Lemon Tree Passage is a supernatural horror thriller where American tourists Maya (Jessica Tovey), her friend Amelia (Pippa Black) and her brother Toby (Tim Pocock) meet friends Geordie (Tim Phillipps) and Oscar (Andrew Ryan) on an Australian beach and they decide to hang out together. Oscar tells the Americans of a local legend at Lemon Tree Passage where a motorcyclist who was killed by speeding teenagers manifests as a ghostly image if teenagers are speeding where he died. They decide to test this out and a flash of light follows them down the road when they speed. The next night, Oscar is coaxed into finding out what the ghostly image is, but disappears, then reappears gassed to death in the boot of their car. Then, Toby and Amelia go missing when trying to find Oscar. Maya is also experiencing visions of an incident that happened at Lemon Tree Passage, but not the one they thought. Meanwhile, Geordie and Oscar's roommate Sam (Nicholas Gunn) is haunted by a ghostly presence that is becoming increasingly clear is related to what the others are experiencing and it wants him to stop their meddling. Stock standard ghost horror movie that sets up an intriguing enough premise but blows it with the usual ghost revenge plot. Jessica Tovey is well cast in the lead and holds the movie together fairly well while the others aren't given much to do and the role of Sam is completely baffling. Was the ghost really taunting him the entire time? What a way to live...

The Food Guide To Love is an Irish romantic comedy where selfish food writer Oliver (Richard Coyle) is kicked out by another woman, this time completely naked. Outside, he meets Bibiana (Leonor Watling), who has his clothes and he is instantly in love. She is reluctant, but goes on a date with him and eventually falls for him. Oliver's relationships have a habit of fizzling out after six months, but Oliver is convinced that Bibiana is the one and then she does the something that changes their relationship completely. She becomes an animal activist and in turn becomes a vegan. Bibiana starts to act differently around him and resents his meat eating ways. It looks like another relationship is going to fizzle out, but Oliver does love Bibiana and he's not going to give up that easily. OK movie that has two good lead performances, but feels like it would resonate more with foodies (I can't believe I wrote that word...). It seems a bit silly that a relationship can be defined by eating choices. But, what do I know?

Update for 17 December...

I've waiting to get a proper HD copy of this movie for a while, finally got one, so here goes.

El Sexo de los Ángeles is a drama where Bruno (Llorenç González) is watching a dance routine where his wallet is stolen and he is assaulted, but the wallet is retrieved by Rai (Álvaro Cervantes). They get to know each other and become friends. Bruno is in a long term relationship with Carla (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey), a photographer. Things are going well between them until one day she walks in on Bruno and Rai having sex. Carla's world is torn apart and eventually she tries to move on, but Bruno convinces her that the relationship is worth saving and that he still has feelings for Rai. Carla reluctantly agrees that Bruno can be with both her and Rai if he sees him away from her. Then Carla gets to know Rai and a thing develops between them. They decide to give this love triangle a go, but will it last? Interesting look at an actual love triangle instead of those two men go after one woman fake love triangles. Still can't help itself with the highly contrived ending, but apart from that it's a fairly convincing look at three people in love with each other. Not a bad little movie at all.

Update for 15 December...

Something quick today.

Virgin Alexander is about Alexander (Rick Faugno), a scrap hauler who has just been given ownership of his uncle's house by his uncle. But, it turns out he's been scammed and left with a $125,000 debt to pay in 9 days or he will get evicted. Ruby (Paige Howard) is a prostitute working out of the local bar run by the dodgy Bim Norse (Bronson Pinchot) who promises her a loan that she is using to pay to go to college, but he reneges when he finds out he's in financial trouble. Alexander has a thing for Ruby, but he is a virgin and has trouble talking to her. When their paths cross, they realise they want the same thing, so in a desperate bid to make quick money, Alexander and Ruby formulate a plan to start a brothel in Alexander's house. They start by snatching Bim Norse's girls Brooke (Mika Boorem) and Lo (Elizabeth Masucci), which leaves Bim in the lurch as he has a bachelor party booked. So, as Alexander's and Ruby's plan comes into fruition, Bim is left performing desperate acts. Can they make the money with their long shot plan? Will they fall in love? Charming, quirky comedy movie that is fairly amusing if a bit tame for a sex comedy. It's not a ground breaking movie by any stretch, but it gets the job done and has a lot of likeable characters to boot.

Update for 11 December...

These Final Hours is an end-of-the-world drama where James (Nathan Phillips) is heading off to the last party and leaving one of his girlfriends, Zoe (Jessica de Gouw), who has just told him she's pregnant. On his way to the party, he is attacked by a machete wielding man and when escaping sees a young girl, Rose (Angourie Rice), who has been captured by a big man so that he and his friends can ravage her. James decides to help her and in doing so, he kills the assailants. James takes Rose to where she last saw her father, but their car has been abandoned, so James reluctantly takes Rose to the party, hoping someone will help her, but the party is in full swing. He tries to leave Rose alone while getting some alone time with his other girlfriend, Vicky (Kathryn Beck), but he's not in the mood. Vicky shows James what her brother, Freddy (Daniel Henshall), has done to survive the approaching fireball, but James is not convinced it's enough and goes to find Rose, who's been given an ecstasy tablet and has become ill. They leave to party and James decides to take Rose to her aunty's house where she was going and do one right thing before it all ends. But, things don't go to plan. There's been a glut of end-of-the-world films recently, but These Final Hours is one of the better ones. Based on the very good short movie Transmission, this is a far more expansive look at the anarchy at the end. There's no hope, but there is redemption and James finds it in the most unexpected way. Not a bad movie at all, but a very glum movie where people are more likely to lose the plot.

Australian VHS Classics for 8 December...

Had these two sitting around for a while and something needed to be done, so here we go...

Contagion is a 1987 horror thriller made in Queensland where a meek real estate agent Mark (John Doyle of Roy and HG) is driving home one night and sees a hitchhiking girl being attacked on a dark road by a murderous redneck. He gets out to help and finds that the redneck wants to rape the girl, but is willing to give Mark a go too (!!). He fights the redneck, but another redneck comes along and shoots him with an arrow and rapes Mark (!!). When Mark wakes up, he kills the rapist redneck then blacks out, wakes up and is helped to a house by a beautiful blonde woman, inhabited by a reclusive millionaire Bael (Ray Barrett) and two beautiful blonde women Helen and Cleo (Pamela Hawkesford and Nathalie Gaffney - credited as Nathy Gaffney...) who help him get his bearings and invite him back with the promise of money and that he can have his way with Helen and Cleo. When he wakes up again, he is in hospital greeted by his fiancée Cheryl (Nicola Bartlett). Mark now knows what he has to do, go back to the house and be the man he always wanted to be. He has his way with Helen and Bael tells him what he has to do next: get his money and put it on shares and get rid of all the obstructions in his life, meaning kill them, which he does, including his work rival and boss. Mark is finally living the life he's always wanted, but there's one more obstruction that is stopping him from being a completely new man and that is Cheryl. But, worried about Mark's erratic behaviour, Cheryl has discovered that everything isn't as it seems. Also, Mark has tampers with her plane. Can Cheryl save Mark before Mark gets rid of her? Can she survive the plane ride? Baffling horror movie that pertains to be extreme, but cuts away at every chance it gets. It's all promise and no follow through. Also, only Cheryl seems to notice Mark's behaviour and his actions go mostly unnoticed by the police or anyone else for that matter. Contagion seems to want to be more than the usual slasher film, but the plot and the plan aren't all that coherent and at times it just seems to be an excuse to increase the body count. Hell, I've got no idea what the rednecks have to do with it, they just seem to be there to represent the opposite of the house occupants and to add to the body count when need be. Contagion tries hard, but is done in by an undercooked story and incoherent plot.

Talk is a 1993 but released 1995 drama about two women Stephanie and Julia (Angie Milliken and Victoria Longley), who work together writing graphic novels. Stephanie is just back from a holiday, and she is desperate for a man as she tells Julia in quite graphic detail. On the other hand, Julia suspects her husband Mac (John Jarratt, you don't even have to blink to miss him, suggesting his role was on cut out) possibly with an unknown girl (Jacqueline McKenzie). Meanwhile, Stephanie gets someone to fix her television, Jack (Richard Roxburgh) and he listens to their non-stop talk while taking forever to fix the television. Well, the title is entirely accurate because that's pretty much all there is and a fair bit of it is quite graphic talk about sex and sexual needs, hence the R rating it received (although I think that's a bit harsh). Not all boring, but tough to recommend a talkfest at any stage, even one with acted out inserts from the graphic novel which are related to the woman's lives.

As always, VHS updates are of a lower quality than the new updates although these two aren't that bad. Seriously doubt either will get a DVD release, possibly Contagion at a stretch because it's a genre movie, but forget about Talk, it barely got a release as is.

Update for 7 December...

Being a bit slow the last few days, but I have a few short films that I once decided to make a regular feature of, did for 2 weeks then nothing 'til now. Heh! Anyway, SBS always supplies and the last month they've been showing a bunch of Australian shorts leading up to tonight's Tropfest, of which the below series were a part of. Surprisingly good stuff, especially from Maia Thomas in Perception (who was also very naked in Black & White & Sex) where she plays a stripper about to have a mastectomy and is coming to terms with that. Also a bit surprised by Ashleigh Cummings turning up as a prostitute in Greg's First Day, a fairly amusingly black comedy.

Might try to make this a semi-regular feature now with HD reduxes slowing down. Surely there's more good stuff from Australian short films that I've been neglecting...

Update for 2 December...

A couple of new-ish movies today.

Deadly Virtues: Love. Honour. Obey is a thriller where an unknown assailant (Edward Akrout) enters the house of a couple while they are having sex, interrupts them and then knocks out the man, Tom (Matt Barber) and then chokes out and ties up the woman Alison (Megan Maczko). After cutting off the finger of Tom, the assailant tells Alison that he is going to keep her for the weekend so that she want him like her husband. In turn, the assailant spends the weekend threatening and forcing Alison to do things that will bring her closer to him while punishing Tom when she disobeys. What does the assailant actually want with Alison and how will this affect them when the assailant finishes what he wants? Interesting movie that is never boring, but has an ending that stretches credibility, which is a shame as up until then, it was building quite nicely. Not bad, not bad at all.

The Best Offer is a thriller where art expert/auctioneer Virgil (Geoffrey Rush) is summoned to the house of Claire (Sylvia Hoeks) with the promise of some decent art works to sell. But every time Virgil goes to her house, Claire is indisposed, which frustrates Virgil no end. While at the house, he finds little mechanical pieces that look quite old, which intrigue him and he gets the assistants of watch fixer Robert (Jim Sturgess) to help him uncover what it is for. Eventually, Virgil finds out that Claire is agoraphobic and will not see people, keeping herself locked in a room in her house whenever anyone is around. Virgil becomes intrigued by Claire when one night, he stays behind to see her which startles her, but leads to a breakthrough where she begins to let him into her life while Virgil stops his wearing of gloves so that he doesn't actually touch people. Virgil falls for the much younger Claire, the first woman he has ever been in love with leading to Claire finally leaving the house. Everything seems to be going great for Virgil and then the rug is pulled from under him... Excellent thriller from Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore that may have predictable twist, but is nonetheless an interesting study in two misfits finding happiness with a great lead performance from Geoffrey Rush. Well worth a look.
