Update for 28 February...

Now over to The Turning, a portmanteau movie featuring 17 stories from author Tim Winton's novel The Turning. The movie is very hard to describe without going into detail of every story and that will take as long as the movie is (3 hours). From what I gather as I have not read the book, most of the stories are about the same character(s) and various moments in their lives, but told from the perspective of the directors who tell each story. Or something... And at 3 hours, The Turning is tough going and I'm glad I didn't see it in cinemas as I don't think I would've made it. Some stories are interesting, some are fascinating, some are boring, some are pointless and then there's some contemporary dance to rub it in. Much of the movie is told in voice over which says to me that the novel of The Turning is a very literary piece, hence the wild changes in quality and interest. Or something, I don't know what I'm talking about. All I know is, it was a long 3 hours and there was not a lot to cap...

It's an interesting experiment that is rarely done in Australia, but maybe this is best left to being an one-off.

Update for 26 February...

A couple more movies from New Zealand.

The Devil's Rock is a thriller set during World War II where two New Zealand soldiers are to infiltrate Forau Island in the Channel Islands to make a raid on Nazi resources on the island. But when they get there, the German soldiers seem occupied with other things. Then one of the soldiers is killed by Nazi Colonel Klaus Meyer (Matthew Sunderland) and the other, Captain Ben Grogan (Craig Hall), is captured and tortured for information, which Grogan does not give. A woman's screams emanate from another part of the building and when Grogan escapes, he goes to see where the screams are coming from and eventually finds they are coming from Helena (Gina Varela), Grogan's supposedly dead wife. But, this is only the half of it. Meyer admits that the Nazis have been dabbling in the occult and that who Grogan sees as Helena is actually a demon conjured up by the Nazis and that is tempting Grogan so that she can kill and eat him. As a battle of wills occurs between Grogan, Meyer and the demon, it becomes a battle for survival and this is stacked against Grogan when it becomes clear that Meyer is using Grogan for his own devious means. A very good little thriller where it's basically a battle of wills between 3 beings with each one hiding something that maybe their trump card. Had been sitting on the movie for a while, but when Jessica Grace Smith turned up in Home and Away, I looked up what else she was in (apart from Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, I'm fully aware of that) and up popped The Devil's Rock, which I had a copy of. Sadly, Jessica is only in the movie for 30 seconds in an after the credits started scene, but I enjoyed the movie nonetheless. Wish I'd gotten to it earlier.

The Fall Guys is a crime caper thriller where three best friends Kubrick (Ryan O'Kane), Max (Kyle Pryor) and Lucas (Dane Dawson) are being interrogated by Narcotics detective Harrison (Paul Glover). It seems that the three friends come across 3 cases of a pure heroin which were left behind at a massacre they have stumbled onto. On the day of Lucas's wedding, the three friends recount there part of the story that started with them innocently obtaining the cases then quickly escalates to every thug and corrupt cop in the district wanting a piece of the action including Harrison, who's seems to be the dirtiest of the lot. But, there is something more at play here and if the boys can survive this, they might not survive the wrath of Lucas's wife to be Schapelle (Amy Waller). Playing from the same book as most modern crime capers, owing more than a thanks to Guy Ritchie, this low budget movie is a bit stodgy but gets by with enough eccentricity and generally weird moments that make it pretty watchable. So, if you're into these type of movies, The Fall Guys is definitely worth a go. Plus it has a pre-Packed To The Rafters Zoe Cramond in it looking real cute (a couple of vids of her looking nice below), so there's that. Sadly, she doesn't appear in the foursome scene. That would've been real nice...

Update for 25 February...

White Lies is a drama about Maori medicinal healer/midwife Paraiti (Whirimako Black) who when on a trip to the city is approached by housemaid Maraea (Rachel House) to help with the pregnancy of her mistress, Rebecca (Antonia Prebble from Outrageous Fortune and The Blue Rose). Rebecca wants to get rid of the child that she is almost at full term with as her currently absent husband does not know of this pregnancy and would not approve of it. Their meeting is prickly, so Paraiti declines to help even with the promise of being paid well. But when Paraiti sees what happens when one of her at risk pregnant patients is handled under 'white' conditions, Paraiti decides to help Rebecca to make things right. But, there are a few secrets about the pregnant, ones that are so damaging that would lead to Rebecca being exposed and with her husband coming home in a matter of days, the birth needs to happen quickly. It doesn't help that Paraiti and Maraea clash constantly over the care of Rebecca. Interesting look at Maori culture clashing with white culture that is well acted and has a surprisingly hopeful ending despite tragedy. The birthing scene is very full on, so it's not for the faint of heart.

In the interviews on the DVD, Antonia mentions at least a half a dozen times that she had a problem with the nudity in this movie and took a long while before accepting the role. So, here are her first nude scenes...

Update for 23 February...

Crave is a thriller about Aiden (Josh Lawson), a photographer obsessed with gruesome crime scenes who wants more in his life. He sees himself as an avenging angel, but the reality is he is a weak mouse. Then one day, his fantasies begin to come true when he catches the eye of Virginia (Emma Lung), who lives in his apartment building. He gathers the courage to speak to her which leads to a relationship mainly revolving around sex. At the same time, his violent fantasies also begin to take off, which gets him into sticky situations that he barely escapes from. When things cool with Virginia, Aiden is set to explode, which leads him to Virginia's ex Ravi (Edward Furlong) and a tragic end that may just be what he is looking for. Crave aspires to be Fight Club, but the reality is much more middling, grasping at being deep when it just isn't. Sadly, nice guy Josh Lawson is miscast here, sure he can play smarmy, but tortured is another thing altogether and he just isn't feeling it. It's just not convincing that he'd have such violent fantasies. Crave is not a bad movie, just more a 'nice try, but not quite' type of movie. Also, another example of an American movie with two Australian leads, which we're seeing more and more of. This is a strange new world...

Here's something obscure for the weekend.

Lbf (apparently Living Between Fucks) is... about Goodchild (really??? Pulled that out of nowhere) (Toby Schmitz), a writer who has returned to Sydney from France to attend the funeral of The Dead Girl (Gracie Otto), a woman he dated for a while. Just back, he lives his life from party to party, mostly coaxed by his friend Cash (Septimus Caton). He is also given money to write a book about love from The Beautiful Financial Backer (Bianca Chiminello) and over time they fall in and out of love. And Goodchild goes crazy, obsessed with finding out what love is, or something... Yeah, this movie isn't for me, not sure who it is for though. I'm up for an existential journey when bothered, but was not roused by Lbf. I dunno...

Redux for 21 February...

Haven't done a redux in a little while, so to coincide with the cinema release of Wolf Creek 2, it's time to revisit the first movie from 8 and a bit years ago.

Saw Wolf Creek 2 today and well, it's a strange one. Particularly the third act which turns into an extreme history lesson and sing-a-long. I shit you not. As we've gotten to know xenophobic backpacker deterrent Mick Taylor (John Jarratt) from the first movie, where he was not introduced into the movie until the 40 minute mark, in the sequel, he's omnipresent, cracking terrible jokes, dropping corny Australian slanted one-liners and basically being broader than he was in the original. So as it suffers from the same fate of most sequels, the magic's already happened and it's tough to recapture that magic. Wolf Creek 2 works best when Mick Taylor's on the stalk particularly when Paul Hammersmith (Ryan Corr) is unluckily introduced. Their cat and mouse chase takes up all of the second act, ending with a nasty scene at a house in the middle of nowhere. And most of the first act is following two German backpackers before they meet Mick, mostly in German with subtitles, which was interesting. So, while I didn't dislike the movie, it sure wasn't as good as the first one. But that third act is completely nuts... Has to be seen to be believed...

Well, there's no nudity in Wolf Creek 2, but Shannon Ashlyn is in her underwear in one scene and is almost sexually assaulted in another. That's about it. But... and this is a big but, make of what you will... Wolf Creek 2 was cut to get a lower rating for cinema release, about 2 minutes according to the ratings. Most likely because of the violence (it was still plenty violent), but we will hopefully find out when the Bluray comes out.

Update for 20 February...

Back to the Spanish movies.

La Gran Familia Española is a dramedy about a family headed by the patriarch (Héctor Colomé) who has been estranged from his wife and is obsessed with the movie 'Seven Brides for Seven Brothers'. The father was desperate to have his family live like the brothers in that movie, even naming his sons, Adán (Antonio de la Torre), Benjamín (Roberto Álamo), Caleb (Quim Gutiérrez), Daniel (Miquel Fernández) and Efraín (Patrick Criado) after the brothers in the movie. Efraín is the only son who wants to follow through with that movie's plot and at a young age determines that Carla (Arantxa Martí) will be his bride. So, on the day of the 2010 World Cup final, where Spain is playing off, the wedding happens. Things aren't great in the family. Adán is in massive debt and plans to rob his father's safe. Caleb is a doctor who fled to Africa to avoid committing to Cris (Verónica Echegui), who is now with Daniel, who is now having his own doubts with Caleb back in town. Then the father has an angina attack during the wedding and this gives Efraín the opportunity to rethink his marriage, especially when he seems better suited to Carla's sister Mónica (Sandra Martín). And there's one or two family secrets that are going to be unearthed over the course of the evening. From the director of Azuloscurocasinegro, Gordos and Primos, this continues his love of families in crisis with a number of his regulars returning. Sadly, I just didn't love La Gran Familia Española as much as his earlier movies, particularly the excellent Azuloscurocasinegro. I know that sounds disingenuous, but the spark just isn't as apparent here, which is a shame as the movie has a pretty likable plot, just that it's completely predictable and resolves all issues way too conveniently. Not a bad movie, very watchable, just nothing to get excited about.

Update for 19 February...

Being a bit slow on the movie side, so it's time to catch up.

Afternoon Delight is a comedy about Rachel (Kathryn Hahn) who is in a stagnant marriage with Jeff (Josh Radnor). When her friend Stephanie (Jessica St. Clair) suggests that Rachel and Jeff join her and her husband for a night at a strip club, things change forever. Rachel is given a lap dance from McKenna (Juno Temple) and she becomes interested in knowing more about her. She meets McKenna and befriends her and when McKenna is kicked out of her house, Rachel offers her a room at her house and becomes Rachel's child nanny. Rachel gets to know McKenna, who's not only was a stripper, but also does a little prostitution. Things go well until Jeff goes off with the boys for a bit of fun, leaving Rachel to help out at the school. But Rachel skips out on this and accompanies McKenna to watch her with one of her 'regulars', but the experience leaves Rachel distressed and she loses respect for McKenna which will set off a chain of events that will change the lives of Rachel, Jeff and their social circle. While a fairly predictable film about middle class inertia and what happens when an outside force is added, Afternoon Delight is still a very watchable movie with good lead turns in Kathryn Hahn and Juno Temple. It doesn't quite work as satire as it doesn't have anything to add that we don't already know, but there are a few laughs along the way.

Update for 13 February...

Haven't capped a Spanish movie for a while, well... OK, a month...

Caníbal is a drama about Carlos (Antonio de la Torre), a tailor in Granada who also happens to be a killer and loves the taste of women and not in the legal way. One day, Alexandra (Olimpia Melinte) moves into the upstairs apartment. She is a brash woman who is having problems with both her boyfriend and people back home in Romania. Then, after a boisterous argument, she asks Carlos to help her, which he reluctantly does. Then, she disappears. Days later her sister Nina (also Olimpia Melinte) comes looking for her and asks Carlos for any information and he agrees to help her. But an odd thing happens. Carlos takes a shine to Nina and offers to help her pay off Alexandra's debt. Nina moves upstairs into Alexandra's apartment and Carlos and Nina become closer, but it's only a matter of time before those old feelings begin to consume Carlos. Caníbal is a pretty good movie that uses long periods of little to no dialogue to set an atmosphere that makes Carlos' motives all the more disturbing. The murder scenes are quite shocking, particularly the one set on the beach, but they are not the sole focus of the movie. Well worth a look if you like dark dramas, particularly dark dramas about what love does to people, well... cannibals.

Update for 5 February...

Filth is a comedy about Bruce Robertson (James McAvoy), a police officer who is desperate for the promotion that is on offer and will do anything to sabotage his competition. When put in charge of a case that if solved, will almost certainly get him that promotion. Except, Bruce is also his own worse enemy as he is massively corrupt, mostly drunk or on drugs, racist, sexist and anything else you can think of. And when he's not fucking the superintendent's wife or outing another cop or setting up or making up lies about other cops or making lurid calls to his mate's wife and setting his mate up for it, he's falling into a deep hole of psychoses reliving all the failures of his wife under the delusion that he will get his wife back. And then it all goes wrong... Hard film to describe as it's basically James McAvoy's character Bruce going from one despicable thing to another, usually covering up others, but Filth isn't as disturbing as it sounds. It's actually fairly watchable and pretty funny and Bruce isn't completely awful even if his descent is making a mess of him. McAvoy is very good here and everyone else floats in and out of the movie when needed without having large roles save for Jamie Bell, but even he all but disappears in the 2nd half. Filth is a pretty good movie, not far removed from The Wolf of Wall Street in tone, but with a far steeper descent into hell.

Update for 3 February...

Now for some B-grade fun.

Scorned is a revenge thriller where Sadie (AnnaLynne McCord) is about to join her older playboy lover Kevin (Billy Zane) for the weekend at his house on the lake. Things are going great, hell she even tells him that she's pregnant and he's happy, then Sadie drugs Kevin and ties him to the bed. Then she text messages her best friend Jennifer (Viva Bianca) on Kevin's phone and invites her over under the pretense that they are going to be together. Sadie then handcuffs, washes her in a bath then forces Kevin to go down on her. Then, the torture starts. Did I forget to mention Sadie is completely insane. Meanwhile, a murderer escapes from prison and is in the area. What could he want? Regulars will know that I love a sleazy Billy Zane genre movie and regularly cap them and this one may have topped the lot of them. But not because of Billy, nope, this is all about AnnaLynne McCord who plays Sadie with such glee and has a number of bizarre moments, whether it's vomiting at the result of her torturous activity, making out with Jennifer while driving a car at high speed, threatening to cook Jennifer's dog, inviting the neighbour in to help cook dinner in the middle of the torture or just fucking an escaped murderer because... why not? Yes, Scorned is utterly silly, there's a ridiculously high number of mentions of the word 'scorned', but it never takes itself seriously and is all the more enjoyable for it. Plus, how can you hate a movie where the insult 'flat-chested whore' is used.

More Emily Browning today.

Plush is a stalker thriller about singer Hayley (Emily Browning) who is getting the band back together after the tragic death of her brother. She hires Enzo (Xavier Samuel) to replace her brother and after initial reservations, oh and saving her from a deranged fan, she grows to like Enzo. The new brotherless album is flopping badly, so Enzo decides to help her write some new songs and from there, they begin an affair while her husband Carter (Cam Gigandet) looks after their twin children. At first, Enzo is a godsend and seems to have gotten Hayley back to where she was before her brother's death, even if he seems to be imposing himself on Hayley and Carter. Then, Enzo starts to exhibit disturbing, clingy behaviour which causes Hayley to reject him, but Enzo does not want to this to end. Oh, and Enzo seems to have no problem killing people and doesn't take rejection very well. Plush is an average thriller, never really stretching itself beyond the usual stalker cliches. Xavier Samuel is the stand out here, but then the stalker usually is the best role in movies like this.
