Redux Friday for 31 October...

Collages and videos from Before The Devil Knows You're Dead are now available here.

Quick redux for the weekend which was supposed to be a double Marisa Tomei redo but sadly the copy of The Wrestler I had is not up to standard. Ugh...

Australian Classics for 30 October...

Haven't got a lot of movie stuff on the boil after months and months of non-stop stuff, so all of a sudden there's a rush on the TV side. Isn't that the way... Anyway, here's something quick from the recent past, Balibo, the 2009 political thriller set during the Indonesian invasion of East Timor in 1975 where a washed-up Australian journalist (Anthony La Paglia) who is coaxed by a East Timorese liaison José Ramos-Horta (Oscar Isaac) to run the East Timorese news agency, but only on the proviso that they find out what happened to five missing Australian journalists. Very sad story that has and will continue to haunt relations between Australia and Indonesia for decades to come. Not an easy watch, but a well-made movie and watching La Paglia's desperation end the way it does is just devastating.

Australian Classics for 28 October...

Haven't done an Australian Classic update in a while, so here a double with 2 films made by Nadia Tass and David Parker. Both movies, 1986's Malcolm and 1990's The Big Steal are inner suburban Melbourne comedies and both were pretty big hits at the time because both are quite charming tales that are easy to watch and good for a laugh. And Australians have always loved movies like these two, it's just a shame that not many movies like this are made in Australia at the moment, it mostly dour or hard-nosed stuff although the recently released The Infinite Man is close to the aesthetic. These two movies are also amongst my favourite Australian movies ever, especially The Big Steal which just works on every level and has two charming leads in Ben Mendelsohn and Claudia Karvan and fantastic array of supporting characters with the standout being Steve Bisley's smarmy car salesman Gordon Farkas, one of the all-time great Australian characters. It's also a shame Tass and Parker don't make movies like this any more, their last effort, the Lifetime TV movie Fatal Honeymoon, is utterly appalling and a long way from these two movies presented today.

Update for 24 October...

While I'm in the mood, a couple more Spanish movies, but this is not a Spanish update!

Los Inocentes is a horror comedy where a group of college kids going on a holiday on April Fools Day get lost and decide to stay at an abandoned hostel where 15 years before, a teenage boy died because a cruel prank went wrong. They decide to make the most of it by having a party, but before long, wouldn't you know it, someone starts picking them off one-by-one and you know the rest. Must be some sort of project as there are 12 directors and 15 writers listed for the movie and it occasionally shows as the tone shifts from comedy deaths to quite nasty deaths. While the plot is utterly predictable, I think that's the point as it's more about the deaths and at 65 minutes, it gets in, kills quite a number of people, then gets out. Fun with some ludicrous deaths (Diana Gómez's death is ridiculous and disturbing at the same time), a nice dollop of nudity, just a good time waster, but nothing more.

Stella Cadente is an artful drama about the reign of an Italian prince who became a Spanish king, Amadeo (Àlex Brendemühl). Driven to change Spain, but is insanely unpopular among the elite, so much so that he is given unofficial house arrest as his inferiors attempt to undermine him any chance they can get. He becomes bored and eventually succumbs to the wiles of his kitchen maid Eloise (Lola Dueñas) while his queen (Bárbara Lennie) is in Italy. Bizarre movie, like a cross between a Peter Greenaway artful eye and the uneven tone of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, the film sort of meanders for scene to scene mirroring the boredom of Amadeo. In between, you gets scenes involving a bejewel turtle who could possibly be God, some homosexual interaction and a scene with a melon and it's aftermath that is something extraordinary (it even extended in close-up in the extras, which is just... I dunno). And don't forget the wacky cast credits. There's also a scene after the credits involving a nude Lola Dueñas and a plastic dart gun (see below). I really don't know what to make of Stella Cadente...

Update for 21 October...

Some quick stuff from three new Spanish movies.

Perdona si te Llamo Amor is a romantic drama about 30-something advertising creative Álex (Daniele Liotti) who after having a minor accident with Niki (Paloma Bloyd) which incapacitates her scooter. So, he drives her to school, but along the way, they sort of hit it off. Niki starts to 'bump' into Álex and after a while, they fall for each other despite the age difference. Everything goes great, including a trip to Paris, but things never go smoothly and where Álex's ex arrives back on the scene with some news, Álex decides to get back with her and both Álex and Niki move on with their lives, but there's still the underlying love for each other and will that be enough to get back together? Utterly predictable romance which is disappointing considering it's a movie about a older man falling for a younger girl. Even the pushback against the relationship is mild. It feels like a Nicolas Sparks story, totally bland and completely boring and predictable with every beat. Ugh, how can a movie about a so-called illicit relationship be so boring...

Kamikaze is a dramedy about Slatan (Álex García), a man from the fictional Russian province Karadjistan who has decided to become a suicide bomber so that the world will know about his people's plight. When the plane he is to blow up is grounded by snow, a group of about 20 people including Slatan are taken to a hotel to wait for the runway to be ready. Slatan is forced to room with Eugene (Eduardo Blanco), a forthright shoe salesman who likes to but into everyone's business and tries to get Slatan involved in activities at the hotel. Also there is Nancy (Verónica Echegui), a woman contemplating suicide as her boyfriend has just dumped her, but when Slatan inadvertently stops an attempt at suicide, she becomes closer to him. All Slatan wants to do is get the bombing over and done with, but the snow has set in and there's nothing to do but interact with the other people stuck at the hotel. And over time Slatan becomes more involved and has more respect for those with him and a dog that just won't leave him alone. So, what will happen when the slow clears? Hard to categorise movie because it's not really a comedy and not really a full-on drama, but is generally light in tone despite the subject. Kamikaze is enjoyable enough with some good characters and has some good laughs and feelgood moments, but that underlying theme of the suicide bomber makes for some bizarre moments at times, particularly a baffling ending involving the plan going ahead that is surprisingly sympathetic. Interesting movie, but a tough movie to sell.

Asmodexia is an exorcist horror thriller that I don't remember a lot about, something about a man who has trained his granddaughter to perform exorcism on people but now must stop the devil coming back to Earth from the body of a former member of a cult run by the man. Not really a fan of exorcism movies and there seems to have been a glut of them recently and they are never going to be better than The Exorcism. Ah well, plenty of people seem to like them.

Update for 19 October...

Life of Crime is a comedy crime thriller based on the Elmore Leonard novel The Switch and set in the 70s where loving housewife Mickey (Jennifer Aniston) is kidnapped by Louis (John Hawkes) and Ordell (Mos Def) and they set the ransom for her husband Frank (Tim Robbins) at a million dollars. Turns out that during his trips to 'Florida', he has set up a company that makes cheap buildings and gets whatever benefit he can scam and all this is unbeknown by Mickey. Also, unbeknown to Mickey, but the kidnappers know that he has shacked up with Melanie (Isla Fisher) and he is going to divorce Mickey to be with Melanie. But, the ransom demand doesn't go according to plan, with Melanie taking over and cutting off Louis and Ordell. So, Ordell comes to the Bahamas where Frank and Melanie are currently staying and attempt to get the money. Meanwhile, Louis forms a bond with Mickey and after she is attacked by Richard (Mark Boone Jr), a Nazi sympathiser whose house they are using to imprison Mickey, they run off with Louis thinking that Ordell had solved their problem, except... A fun adaptation that captures the vibe of Elmore Leonard's world quite well, particularly a pre-Jackie Brown/Rum Punch Ordell Robbie. While it's not in the top echelon of Leonard adaptation such as Jackie Brown, Get Shorty and Out of Sight, it's still an easy watch and the cast work well together. Worth a look.

Update for 15 October...

Plastic is a British thriller based on a true story where a group of college boys headed by Sam (Ed Speleers) run a credit card scam that nets them some tidy cash. One day, Yatesy (Alfie Allen) and Rafa (Sebastian De Souza) do a quick smash and grab on an unsuspecting punter and steal a suitcase which just happens to be owned by the crime boss Marcel (Thomas Kretschmann), who tracks them down, works out what they do and threatens them with death unless the group pays him 2 million dollars in two weeks. Even running their scams, they are going to struggle until Sam meets Frankie (Emma Rigby), who works for a data processing centre involved with credit cards. So, the team with Frankie go to Miami to steal from the credit cards of unsuspecting high rollers, but Yatesy gets jealous of Sam and Frankie and stuffs up their plan, so they go with a plan Rafa concocts on-the-fly where he impersonates a prince from Brunei (who is remarkably a dead ringer!) and steal diamonds from an unsuspecting jeweller worth up to 20 million dollars. Things go well with their hasty plan until petty jealousies and a psychotic Marcel enter the fray. Decidedly preposterous movie (so of course it's based on a true story) that isn't anything you haven't seen before and plays up the glam factor to it's maximum. And it's near impossible to have any sympathy for the group because they are such a bunch of confident arseholes (maybe some sympathy for Frankie who was played and had altruistic motives for been in on the scam), so fuck these guys. Slick, smooth, but completely vapid and no-one to barrack for. Meh!

And what's with British crime movies being about credit card scams all of a sudden. Feels totally low-rent. We're going to miss the bank robbery/heist movie when the world goes totally digital.

Update for 14 October...

See No Evil 2 is a horror thriller follow-up to the shot in Australia 2006 (yes, 2006) original that takes place in the immediate aftermath of the original massacre where the victims are taken to the morgue, including the apparently dead killer Jacob Goodnight (WWE wrestler Kane). Working the late shift are Seth (Kaj-Erik Eriksen), Amy (Danielle Harris) and their wheelchair-assisted boss Holden (Michael Eklund). Amy has to get to birthday drinks to get to, but would rather not, but her friends and brother Will (Greyston Holt) decide to come to her at the morgue to have the party. Fun is had by all, but then the apparently dead Jacob awakens and continues to appease his mother by fixing all those that have sinned. Which is everyone... Who will survive and will there be a third movie? Of all the horror movies to get a sequel and eight years after the original too, why was it See No Evil? Not saying it shouldn't have one, but it seemed long forgotten and deservedly so as the original isn't a good movie at all. The sequel, directed by the Soska twins (Dead Hooker in a Trunk, American Mary), is only a slight improvement with a slightly less preposterous story with some decent kills, but like the original, is utterly forgettable and nothing you haven't seen before. The one 'standout' here is Katharine Isabelle's ridiculous performance which is so over-the-top that she seems to be in another movie compared to all the rest of the glum faced actors. Probably best seen as a commercial step-up for the Soska twins after the beautiful mess that is American Mary.

Update for 12 October...

Belle du Seigneur (The Passion of War) is a European movie set just before World War 2 where married couple Adrien and Ariane (Ed Stoppard and Natalia Vodianova) are in Geneva for Adrien's job working for the League of Nations. His boss Solal (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), the head of the League of Nations spies Ariane and he is instantly smitten. And he doesn't even care that she's married, he's going to have her no matter what. Solal is also desperate to stop the German upsurge, but no-one else wants to hear this, so he resigns and steals away Ariane to her home in Italy. But, both Solal and Ariane's behaviour wavers wildly and their relationship is tumultuous to say the least. Solal attempts to get a job back at the League of Nations, but when he sees that he is not wanted, he comes back to Ariane and they continue their downward spiral of a relationship until it's inevitable end. Oh boy, this is sooooo tawdry. Solal is so sensitive, brooding and possessive that only he can save the world/have the girl. Ariane is understandably taken by Solal, but she plays into his whims and is impossible to feel sympathy for. Both Vodianova and Meyers are so beautiful together and there are many exotic locations that the movie feels more like a perfume commercial (both I'm sure have been stars of) and the plot also resembles one. After Ariane splits from Adrien, except for one brief moment between he and Solal, Adrien disappears completely, doesn't even fight for his wife. Belle du Seigneur is the very definition of melodrama, but sadly, a wafer-thin one.

Update for 8 October...

Maps To The Stars is a drama set in Hollywood where struggling actress Havana (Julianne Moore) is desperate to get the role in a remake of a movie that originally starred her now dead mother. Which could be the worst thing for her as she is currently working out her 'mummy' issues with famous unconventional therapist Stafford Weiss (John Cusack) and she has started seeing visions of her mother (Sarah Gadon) that are taunting her. Stafford Weiss's son, Benjie (Evan Bird) is a teenage Hollywood star who is rather obnoxious and is already recovering from a drug problem when he takes umbrage at his much younger co-star stealing scenes from him. Meanwhile, Agatha (Mia Wasikowska), is a woman who was disfigured in a fire and has come to Los Angeles at the behest of Carrie Fisher (yes, this actually happens), who recommends her to Havana as a personal assistant. But, Agatha's past will end up haunting all and her arrival will have a devastating effect on their lives. From director David Cronenberg, and if you've ever watched one of his movies, you sort of know what to expect, a dark journey with horrible consequences. And Maps To The Stars is no exception, with many horrible characters, particularly Havana whose comeuppance couldn't come quick enough to be honest, but having said that, Julianne Moore plays her so well and is a standout in the movie. Most of the stuff on display here is depressing to watch and the third act is horrible to watch unfold. And I didn't mind that is was horrible to watch because it was pretty engrossing to watch, but how do you recommend a movie where no-one comes out unscathed or with nothing nice to say about anything that happens?

Update for 6 October...

The Scribbler is a thriller where Suki (Katie Cassidy), a woman with multiple personalities, is sent to a halfway house for patients with mental illnesses and that's been generous. There she is greeted by an assortment of women with issues and Hogan (Garret Dillahunt), an old friend who seems to be mistakenly there and he uses this to 'comfort' the women on the floor including Suki. Suki is given by her doctor (Billy Campbell) a machine called 'The Siamese Burn', which helps her control her personalities with what seems to be some kind of electric shock, but it causes her to lose days and one of the girls on her floor seems to die in the lost days, usually the ones that have slept with Hogan. Also, Suki has a personality called The Scribbler, who seems to be developing the Siamese Burn machine in the lost days and it now can show the 'true self' of the participant. But, the floor is running out of residents and the killer is still unknown. Meanwhile, a cop (Michael Imperioli) and a psychiatrist (Eliza Dushku) try to get to the bottom of the death by interrogating Suki. Interesting little thriller that's plays like a comic book movie, but without the men in capes and world saving stuff. At times it's completely over-the-top and at other times it has a go at trying to understand the complexities of mental illness and while it's not wholly successful at that as the movie is a little confusing, The Scribbler is never boring and is a pretty fun ride.

Redux Friday for 3 October...

Actually didn't do a redux for September and have slowed them down for the moment. But I've had this movie sitting around for a while, so why not? Love this movie, it's been a while since I've seen it, but it still works. And the best part as a capper: long takes, easier to edit...

Update for 1 October...

A couple of movies with Haley Bennett today.

Deep Powder is a true-life drama set in 1982 about Danny (Shiloh Fernandez), a ski-lift operator who is saving up to go to college when he meets Natasha (Haley Bennett), a rich girl who is with her boarding school friends when she loses her purse on the lift. She's not that fussed about it, but Danny finds it to give back to her which leads her to invite him to a party her friends are having. It turns out the party is for a club that gets cocaine for other rich kids from Ecuador and Natasha has won the privilege to go and get the cocaine. Even though Danny doesn't enter the party, but leave a record for her to listen to and from there, their relationship develops. Natasha decides to take Danny with her to get the cocaine and give him the money she is getting for doing so to help with his college fund. In Ecuador, they get the cocaine with only a small hiccup, but it's when they get back that things go very bad for Danny and Natasha. An OK film that never really stretches itself beyond the usual drug trafficking motifs or perils of blind love and the ending is a bit much even if it's based on a true story. But, the movie is fairly watchable with likeable leads, but this is hardly a memorable movie.

Kristy is a horror thriller where Justine (Haley Bennett), is one of the few remaining students in the college dorms from Thanksgiving, even though she's had offers to go with her boyfriend and best friend. One night, she decides to go to a convenience store to stock up on some treats where she meets a seemingly disturbed woman (Ashley Greene) who mistakenly calls her Kristy. Justine gets out of their fast, but back at the dorms, it seems she has been followed and when she finds the two security guards on duty dead, Justine must do whatever it takes to survive this onslaught from the disturbed woman and her cohorts. And that means she must fight back. OK movie that takes a while to get going before the stalking begins and the whole conspiracy conceit seems massively farfetched, but when it comes down to Justine against the mob, this is when the movie is at its best.
