Australian Classics for 30 September...

OK, calling this one a 'classic' is a serious stretch.

Slaughtered is a 2009 low-budget horror movie set in a pub over two nights. A group of friends work at a pub in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, when one night, a drunk regular is brutally murdered.. The next day, it's business as usual, but after the drunk regular is found dead, one by one, various workers and drinkers will be slaughtered by a man wearing a mask with glass shards sticking out of it, wielding a saw. Who will survive and who is the killer? Unsurprisingly, it's pretty obvious who the killer is, but that's the least of the problems in Slaughtered. My favourite thing being as the bodies pile up, workers who find dead bodies just go back to work as if nothing happened. Then there's the dead body that infects the beer and they are just told not to serve that beer anymore. There is only one attempt to call the cops, only so that hoary 'phone line's being cut' cliche. Except, there is a scene a few minutes before where one character texts another character on a mobile phone. Maybe if the movie was played as a horror comedy it can explain some of the ludicrous things that go on, but there's very little attempt at comedy. This is one poor movie, embarrassingly so...

Also, I saw a couple of Australian movies just released in cinemas, The Little Death and The Infinite Man, both suggesting there'd be sex scenes, but neither deliver any real nudity. In The Little Death, Kate Box is strategically 'nude' a few times during sex scenes and shows her bare back once. Lisa McCune also has a brief side-boob scene as she's getting a massage. In The Infinite Man, New Zealand actress Hannah Marshall (Packed To The Rafters) has a few sex scenes where she is strategically 'nude' and shows her bare back. Some scenes are replayed as it's a time travel movie. For the movies themselves, I thought The Little Death was OK, a sex comedy that focuses on people's fetishes more than the sex itself, it has it's moments, but there's some stuff like with the sex offender that's overplayed and unless you're completely comfortably with the 'dark side' of sex, you might have some problems with this movie. The best bit by far is the deaf translation of a phone sex conversation, but even that scene seemed out of place with the rest of the movie. The Infinite Man plays on one of my favourite genres, the time travel movie, but if Predestination was a head scratcher, The Infinite Man makes that look like a find-a-word puzzle to it's cryptic crossword. Reminds me of the Spanish movie Los Cronocrímenes (TimeCrimes) as it's a simple three hander set all in the one area, but The Infinite Man is actually a romantic comedy and a rather fun one at that. A real nice surprise.

Well, I've finally gotten around to capping The Wolf of Wall Street, well after everyone else, but what the hell? I was going to wait 'til the Bluray release and that came and went, then I just forgot about 'til now when I needed to get rid of some hard drive space quickly. Heh... Anyway, I don't need to tell you the plot of the movie, all I'll say is that I quite enjoyed this movie.

Update for 26 September...

God Help The Girl is a Glasgow set musical where Australian girl Eve (Emily Browning) loves both listening to and creating music and she is currently making a tape to help her get through her stay in hospital for treatment of her anorexia issues. One night she sneaks out and goes to a club to see some bands play and there she sees James (Olly Alexander) fronting a shambolic band. Later, James sees Eve sitting by herself and starts talking to her and she ends up spending the night on the couch at James's place. After a while, Eve is allowed to leave the hospital to attend university and one day she goes and sees James at his work as a pool attendant. James asks her to live in the spare room at his house and she obliges. They become friends and one day Eve accompanies James as he teaches piano to Cassie (Hannah Murray, is that the same character as Skins?). That day they decide to make music together and eventually start a band. Eve also gives a tape to the lead singer of a band, Anton (Pierre Boulanger), to give to some record hot shots and after a while, they begin to see each other romantically. But, Eve's demons will come back to haunt her as she struggles to cope with the things going on in her life. And maybe she'll realise that James wants to be more than friends. Written and directed by Stuart Murdoch, singer for the band Belle & Sebastian, if you've ever heard one of their song, you know what you're in for with God Help The Girl. Of course, it's been described as a hipster musical and yes, it does have those tendencies, but I still didn't mind the movie. And I pretty much always hate musicals, but this movie has enough charm from the three leads to get by, even when it gets a bit silly. If you like the music of Belle & Sebastian, you'll probably love this, otherwise, it would really depend on your opinion of hipsters.

Update for 25 September...

They Came Together is a parody of romantic comedy movies where Joel (Paul Rudd) and Molly (Amy Poehler) recount the story of how they fell in love to their friends. Joel works for a candy manufacturer who is looking to crush the small lolly shop owned by Molly. At the same time, Joel ends a relationship with Tiffany (Cobie Smulders) who is cheating on him with his work rival Trevor (Michael Ian Black). One day, their friends ask Joel and Molly to a party so that they can get them together, but it goes badly. Their next meeting goes batter and they start going out and everything is fine until Molly finds out that Joel is working on plans to crush her lolly shop. Joel gets back with Tiffany while Molly is asked out by square Eggbert (Ed Helms). Later, Eggbert asks Molly to marry him and Joel realises that he really wants Molly. Looks like a normal boring romantic comedy right? Except this is the most smug, mockingly ironic, totally above it all movie I've seen in many a long while. This movie thinks it's so smart that it practically laughs in our face as it ticks off every cliche. About ten minutes in I wanted to put my fist through a wall because that was so much more pleasurable than this piece of mocking shit. There are one or two moments that are work, but mainly because they aren't this mocking bullshit, but the rest is just insulting to the viewer's intelligence. Give me Flying High/Airplane! and the Naked Gun movies every day of the week. Now they didn't talk down to you, they generally loved the movies they were parodying. Fuck this movie, fuck it all...

Update for 24 September...

52 Tuesdays is a drama about 'mother' and daughter who spend every Tuesday together for a year after 'mother' James (Del Herbert-Jane) tells her teenage daughter Billie (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) to move in with her father as she undergoes treatment for gender realignment. It seems Billie is the last to know about this and we follow her as she comes to terms with her mother becoming a man. There are complications with James's treatment and he has to stop using testosterone. James's also starts a relationship with a workmate and is worried about telling Billie. Also, Billie becomes friends with Jasmine and Josh (Imogen Archer and Sam Althuizen) and they spend time on Tuesdays first at school and then at a rec room provided by Billie's uncle. Here, Billie and her friends experiment sexually and this will have an effect later on. Very interesting movie about a unique mother-daughter relationship during one very tumultuous years. Both leads are great, but particularly Tilda Cobham-Hervey, who in her very first movie (most of the cast are on debut) shows maturity and screen presence well beyond her years. About the closest comparison to an Australian actress at a similar time is Claudia Karvan and if she has half the career she has, well... The movie itself is more a family drama than a movie about gender alignment, but that is all handled quite well and progressively. Not for everyone, but if you're into an unique family drama, 52 Tuesdays certainly delivers that.

Isle of Dogs is a thriller where gangster Darius Deel (Andrew Howard) finds out that his new trophy wife, former prostitute Nadia (Barbara Nedeljakova) is having an affair with his right hand man Riley (Edward Hogg) and he wants her dead. So, Darius comes up with a plan to get Riley to kill her and save his own life. Things go wrong for Riley as Nadia barely escapes a masked killer and the death of innocents including two cops keeps rising. Riley attempts to salvage the evening by soothing Nadia before finishing the job. Can Riley kill Nadia and save himself? And what surprise does Nadia have for Riley? OK little thriller with a good performance for Nedeljakova (one of the girls from Hostel) and Andrew Howard being the same character he always is whether it's a redneck rapist in the I Spit On Your Grave remake or the numerous drug dealers he's played including the Australian movie One Perfect Day where he sold dodgy drugs to Abbie Cornish... Nothing special, but an OK timewaster that has a good ten minutes when the killings begin including poor Laura Pyper from Hex, who gets a quite savage death.

Update for 19 September...

Premature is a teen sex comedy about Rob (John Karna) who wakes up after his wet dream and is about to have a very bad day. He has an interview with an university recruiter (Alan Tudyk) and his suit has been stained by piss shot out of a water pistol by the jocks. He has a terrible interview in secondhand shorts, but things are looking up when the hot girl Angela (Carlson Young) asks him over to her house to help her study for a test. Sure, it means he has to break off watching the spelling championships with his friend Gabrielle (Katie Findlay), but it for a good cause. At Angela's house, she tells him that she wants to have sex with him, but this leads to him prematurely ejaculating. Then, Rob wakes up in the same place as he did the previous morning. He is experiencing the previous day again and when he gets to Angela's house, it happens all over again. It seems that every time he cums, he goes back to the lying in a puddle in his bed like he did the first time. No matter what he tries or how his best friend Stanley (Craig Roberts) interferes, he cannot break the loop. So, what is it that will get him out of the loop and onto the next day. Yeah, it's Groundhog Day with a teen sex twist, which is well... a bit grotesque, but there's a few laughs to be had, but not a lot of the spark that makes Groundhog Day work. The main character isn't the greatest and he doesn't win us over, but I kinda liked his two friends, especially British actor Craig Roberts, who seems to be getting decent roles in America now.

Update for 17 September...

Carlston za Ognjenku (Tears For Sale) is a comedy drama about two sisters Ognjenka (Sonja Kolacaric) and Mala (Katarina Radivojevic) who live in a small Serbian village that consists pretty much only women. This is because all of the men have gone off to war. And things are getting desperate as the only man is a bedridden old man and when the sisters attempt to have relations with him, they are repulsed and decide that they must do something about this. So, they head to the big city to find themselves a man each to take back to their village. Ognjenka meets Dragoljub (Nenad Jezdic), a performer who gets shot out of a cannon and it's love at first sight, while Mala pushes her way through the crowds to get the only other man, Dragoljub's promoter Arsa (Stefan Kapicic). They all head back to the village, but bringing back two men to the love and sex starved village women is not going to end well. Interesting movie, very different from the average Hollywood fair and feels and looks more like a fantasy movie. There are some truly absurd moments in this movie as it is a world so very foreign to what I know. And I kinda liked it too, an interesting story with some intriguing, well done ideas.

Update for 16 September...

Arthur Newman is a drama about Wallace Avery (Colin Firth), a man who has had enough of his life and decides to 'kill off' Wallace and become Arthur Newman. Along the way to a new life, he meets Michaela/Mike (Emily Blunt), a woman who has her own troubles and is currently tussling with police. Arthur attempts to befriend her, but she is cautious, but over time, she relents and travels with Arthur. Meanwhile, back at home, his girlfriend Mina (Anne Heche) and his son with another woman, Grant (Sterling Beaumon) come to terms with the 'death' of a man it turns out they barely knew. Arthur tells Mike that he is taking up a position as a golf pro and it turns out that as Wallace he was a professional golfer, but did not succeed. As they head to their destination, they see couples and start to imitate them after they have broken into their houses. Both Arthur and Mike are running away from their lives and it's before long that they will have to confront this. OK movie about two people looking for meaning in life and both Firth and Blunt are pretty good and there are one or two great touches. But, it is a rather depressing movie, so the movie will definitely alienate people.

Update for 15 September...

Breaking at the Edge is a thriller about Bianca (Rebecca da Costa), who is pregnant with her first child with husband Ian (Milo Ventimiglia). The doctor advisers Bianca to take it easy and take certain medication as she has a history of mental illness and she may have to be hospitalised for the sake of the baby. Then, Ian's dad dies and leaves him and his brother Zach (Johnathon Schaech) some money even though they had nothing to do with him. Bianca sees a girl in the lift of that building and is intrigued by her. Then, she starts seeing the girl a lot more, as if she is haunting her. When a girl is found dead that is remarkably similar to the girl that Bianca is seeing, she investigates and what she finds out is a little too close to home. A stock-standard junk thriller that has a bizarre ending which involves a character who's barely in the movie doing something which I'm sure would have had more damage if it was done for real. Then there's one scene, the nude scene below which is so bafflingly and out-of-place and it's how a character finds out an important piece of information, but I can't admonish it because it's a nude scene. Things like that happen throughout the movie, barely explained or justified. And what's with Andie McDowell turning up for 5 seconds and getting a high billing? Ah well...

Update for 13 September...

How 'bout some Italian horror.

Tulpa: Perdizioni Mortali is a giallo thriller where executive Lisa Boeri (Claudia Gerini) releases the stress of her job by going to a private sex club. At the same time, a killer is stalking and killing members of the sex club. After the death of the third member of the club, Lisa realises that she has had sex with all three people and she goes to the club to warn them of this. She is followed by one of her workmate who has it in for, but after getting damaging evidence against Lisa, she is murdered by the killer. Lisa desperately tries to warn one of her sexual partners that he could be next, but the killer has something in store for her. Tawdy movie, but that's not uncommon for a giallo movie, but also very silly, also not uncommon for a giallo movie. Gerini is a pretty good actress and she elevates this movie to a slightly higher quality than it should be, but the silliness of the plot and a ridiculously high amount of mentions of the word 'tulpa', whatever the fuck that it is, stifle the quality of this movie.

Update for 11 September...

The Zero Theorem is a comedy about Qohen Leth (Christoph Waltz) who is a computer programmer who hates his job and his whole miserable existence mainly because he doesn't know what his purpose in life is. One day his boss Joby (David Thewlis) calls him into work and invites him to a party. At the party, he is summoned to meet Management (Matt Damon) who gives him the task of solving the impossible Zero Theorem and that he can do it from his home, a rundown converted church. As this problem is near impossible and it could make him go mad, Management sends him Bainsley (Mélanie Thierry), to relieve his stresses and his own son Bob (Lucas Hedges) who helps him keep his equipment running smoothly, while a computer doctor Dr. Shrink-Rom (Tilda Swinton) diagnoses him with numerous conditions. But, when Qohen discovers that Bainsley is actually prostitute/webcam model and that Bob is dying from a chronic disease, he finds that his whole life may indeed be meaningless and that he's just another cog in the wheel for Management to manipulate. From Terry Gilliam, who of late has been more miss than hit, The Zero Theorem is another frustrating wacky movie to add to the collection. As usual, everyone acts wacky with Qohen always speaking obnoxiously in first person plural and Bob calling everyone Bob and Tilda Swinton being well... Tilda Swinton and that before a mostly incomprehensible plot about whatever Qohen is doing. If your a Gilliam fan, you'll probably like it, otherwise, probably don't bother.

Update for 9 September...

Continuing on the Cat Run theme.

Cat Run 2 starts with two Russian assassins Tatiana and Mina (Winter Ave Zoli and Maria Rogers) being smuggled into the US and arriving in New Orleans where they pose as strippers/prostitutes and mount a mission to steal sensitive government information and in the process, kill many soldiers. Mina is killed before she can get the flash drive to Tatiana. Meanwhile, our favourite private detectives/restaurateurs Anthony and Julian (Scott Mechlowicz and Alphonso McAuley) have arrived in New Orleans to be on a cooking show and stay a friend of Julian's place called Big Ray. His nephew was a victim at the army base and he's convinced something is up. Anthony and Julian decide to check it out for themselves and end up getting on the wrong side of Tatiana who is desperate to find the flash drive. It's not long before even Tatiana is in over her head and the people she is working for betray her and the three must join forces to defeat all of Tatiana's enemies. From director John Stockwell, who directed the original and also this is the third movie he's directed that's been released this year (In The Blood and Kid Cannabis the other two), this is pretty much the same movie as the original. But, if the first movie wasn't gratuitous enough for you, Cat Run 2 begins with 10 minutes of naked ladies slaughtering dozens of men. And it doesn't get any less subtle from there. While it's obvious that this movie has a significantly smaller budget than the first movie, this seems to allow them to try out some of the most dodgy jokes I've seen in a movie outside of a Wayans Brothers production. Pornographic memory??? Midget jokes??? Chubby chasing a frequent theme??? Subtitle humour??? OK, I can't knock a movie for delivering a shitload of nudity (would've liked more from Kamille Leai...), but Cat Run 2 ain't a good movie.

Update for 8 September...

I was going to release a double update featuring the two Cat Run movies tomorrow, but I thought it would be better to give the second movie it's own update. Also, more time to finish it.

Cat Run is a thriller where Catalina (Paz Vega) escapes from a house in Montenegro where a hooker is killed by sleazy American politician (Christopher McDonald) and all the other prostitutes are gunned down by a sinister group of bodyguards. In her escape, Catalina stops off to use the phone at a restaurant run by American Anthony (Scott Mechlowicz) who is joined by his out-of-luck buddy Julian (Alphonso McAuley). Catalina steals Julian's phone and Anthony's car as she desperately tries to get back to her baby which is being minded by her sister. But it seems Catalina also stole a hard drive with highly sensitive information and the assassin Helen Bingham (Janet McTeer) is brought in to take care of her. Meanwhile Anthony and Julian see what is happening in the papers and decide to start a detective agency as they think they can catch Catalina and get a reward for doing so. They are in for a rude shock when they find out they are way out of their depth. But, they form an unlikely ally to help them and save Catalina and her baby from certain death. A silly but still fairly enjoyable thriller with gratuitous violence and nudity throughout, so it's very much a movie for men. The laughs are hit and miss and Janet McTeer does her best Helen Mirren impersonation and is the best thing in it, but apart from that it's a watch and completely forget soon after you've watched it movie.

Update for 5 September...

Quick one today.

Enemy is a mystery movie about university lecturer Adam (Jake Gyllenhaal) who lives a relatively mundane life with live-in girlfriend Mary (Mélanie Laurent). One day, he is recommended a movie and he decides to hire it and when he watches it, he finds that one of the bit part characters is played by a man who is his doppelgänger. Adam is taken aback by this. Does he have a twin brother he doesn't know about? He decides to contact his doppelgänger, an actor named Anthony (also Gyllenhaal) who is married to Helen (Sarah Gadon), who is pregnant with their child. Anthony does not believe this, but Helen checks Adam out and finds this to be true. Adam and Anthony decide to meet and needless to say that both men do know how to react to what is before them. Later, Anthony decides to use this to his own advantage and score a night with Mary, but Adam curiosity leads him to Anthony's place and both men will have an experience they aren't likely to forget. Wow, Enemy is a wild, very cryptic ride told at a glacial pace and has a great idea, but I've got to admit, I'm struggling to understand it as a whole. Mainly the spider symbolism throughout the movie including giant spiders stalking the city and that ending. I wish I knew what it all means. Tough movie to recommend though as not a lot happens and the pacing would be prohibitive to most people. Worth a look if you want something outside of a Hollywood blockbuster.

Also, I saw in cinemas the Australian time-travel movie Predestination from the Spierig Brothers (Undead, Daybreakers) starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook and I gotta say it's a wild ride of a movie, but takes a lot of set-up before getting to the pay-off. And what a pay-off, completely fucked up and mindbending. I like time travel movies, so I probably was always going to like this, but the story is completely out there and it works. In regards to nudity, there's one scene where a nurse has sex with a doctor and the nurse shows a breast, but I didn't catch who it was and it was dark and brief, so that doesn't help. There is a credit for Elise Jansen as a nurse, but I'm pretty sure she plays another nurse later in the movie. There's also another scene of nudity, but if I give that away it would be a major spoiler (and I won't be capping it anyway...)

Update for 1 September...

Some quick series today from 3 nothing special straight-to-Bluray movies, some are actually pretty bad. In fact, I think April Rain is the most poorly made movie I've seen in a fair while and the Bluray transfer isn't a lot better. Even the ending is baffling. A Certain Justice features Dolph Lundgren in a bad wig and fake moustache, so there's the quality spelt out for you. Dead End goes along all ho-hum with a redneck kidnapping plot until an ending which is impossible to explain except that if you take it literally, the movie you just saw never happened. Jesus, I sure know how to pick 'em.
