Update for 29 June...
Today's update is all about Rose Byrne with a few other actresses thrown in. Haven't really capped Rose in a while, which isn't good enough as she was one of my all time faves. So, I'm slowly making up for it here as she's now a regular fixture in Hollywood movies and surprisingly become a comic presence which she really wasn't until Bridesmaids. I'll cap more series feauturing her over time.

Update for 28 June...
Currently going through my hard drive for stuff that I could get rid of, so the next few updates will contain that sort of thing. Today's update is from The Internship, a moderately amusing movie about two old hats trying to break into a Google internship. Strangely, this modest movie has an unrated version that is basically a lengthier version of the club scene that has the dancers showing their breasts instead of just in their underwear for the cinema version. It's not really needed, but what the hell, I'm not complaining and the unrated version flows a lot better while watching it.
I'll admit that I really only watched the movie for Rose Byrne although there's nothing capable from her, but the next update that I'm still working on will have a few series from her recent movies.

Update for 24 June...
Neverlost is a Canadian thriller where Josh (Ryan Barrett) is miserable as can be because he can't sleep and his marriage to Megan (Jennifer Polansky) is a disaster and she's most definitely cheating on him. His doctor finally prescribes him some sleeping pills and he finally gets some sleep and starts to dream about his love of his life, Kate (Emily Alatalo), who died tragically in a fire lit by her father (Sam Borstein). The dream is incredibly vivid and he is in a much better place, until he is woken up Megan only to abuse him. Now all Josh wants to do is get back there and he takes more sleeping pills and has more vivid dreams about Kate until he runs out of pills. Josh wants to get back to the dream life and starts stealing cough medicine, then a whole slew of sleeping pills, disregarding his own safety in the process of getting back to the dreams. While his real life goes to shit, his dream life is perfect, until Kate's father turns up in the dreams and is extremely jealous of their love and he wants Josh dead at any cost. Now it's a race against time to save himself in both reality and his dream world. Neverlost seems like an interesting idea, but the outcome is just repugnant and gets worse by the minute, so much so that I don't know why I bothered to keep watching to the inevitable ending. Josh is such an awful character who we're supposed to be sympathetic towards, but he becomes so horrible that I just didn't care about him and his story isn't worth following, also not helped by the actor who plays him who just mopes around for the most part. The women characters fair just as badly with them so obviously good and evil, it's just hackneyed writing. The father rounds out the ludicrous caricatures, his jealousy of his daughter given such poor motivation that I found it laughable. I went in thinking this might be an interesting little movie, but I am genuinely surprised at how poor Neverlost actually is. What a shame...

Australian Classics for 22 June...
Haven't gone back to the vault for quite a while, a couple of months at least, so here we go again.
Waiting is a 1990 drama where Clare (Noni Hazlehurst, very pregnant at time of shooting) is about to give a birth, but there is something a little different about this. Clare is a surrogate for Sandy (Helen Jones) who would like another child with her husband Michael (Frank Whitten), but isn't able to get pregnant. Sandy, Michael and their kids head to Clare's property with another friend Therese (Fiona Press) and her daughter joining them as Therese is making a movie about the entire experience. Also joining them Diane (Deborra-Lee Furness), a fashion editor and friend who brings along Bill (Denis Moore) apparently her latest beau, but nobody remembers inviting her. As Clare is preparing for her home birth, things don't go to plan with tension between Diane and Sandy because Diane slept with Michael, Bill being outed as a doctor who would convince Clare to have a hospital birth and Clare's father Frank (Ray Barrett) is watching all this, trying to mind his own business. But, there's one more twist to the tale that Sandy is not going to like. Feminist drama about a woman's right to choose what she wants to do with her body, but to be honest, I think it cops out with the twist in the end. There is some good things here, mostly revolving around Clare, most of the other characters seem to be there for comic effect more than adding to the drama. Very much of its time with surrogacy far more widespread and accepted than 25 years ago, but still an interesting look at the issues when not going for laughs.
Shame is a 1987 drama where Asta (Deborra-Lee Furness) is riding across the country on a motorbike, but has an accident and has to get her bike fixed in the next town. As soon as she walks into town, Asta is greeted by a leering mob of underemployed men and a local cop who scoffs at her for wanting to stay the night in town. Asta rides here bike over to the mechanics run by Tim (Tony Barry) and attempts to fix her bike although a part she needs won't be available for a day or two. Also, Asta has walked into a family crisis with Tim's daughter Lizzie (Simone Buchanan) crying as she has been raped by Danny (David Franklin), but no one is willing to do anything about it, not in the least her father who shuns her. Asta takes a liking to Lizzie and this gives her the confidence to go to the police with her allegations. After further incidents in town, including being attacked by young boys, Asta attempts to help Lizzie, but with an impotent police force and rising tensions on her final night in town, things are going to boil over and men are going to take back their dignity the only way they know how; with violence and it's going to end in tragedy. Very good drama driven by a star-making performance by Deborra-Lee Furness as a twist on the out-of-towner who attempts to clean up a lawless town. While it's amusing in hindsight to see a whole bunch of comedians as the bad guys (particularly tiny Stig Wemyss who always plays little weeds), there's still a recognisable menace in the town and a charismatic villain behind it all. And the ending is surprisingly shocking and quite heartbreaking. It's such a shame Furness has pretty much retired from acting as she's was quite good back in 80s and 90s.
There's also a quick video of Noni Hazlehurst from the short film Stations which was on the Waiting DVD.

Update for 19 June...
Charlie's Farm is a slasher horror movie where a group of friends decide to go on a road trip, but this time to somewhere other than the beach. Friends Donkey (Sam Coward) and Jason (Dean Kirkright) convince Jason's American girlfriend Natasha (Tara Reid) to go in land to a ranch, but they really want to go to Charlie's Farm, a place where backpackers have apparently gone missing because Charlie has become a psychopath after his parents are slaughtered by the townsfolk because they were murderers or so the legend goes. Natasha gets her friend Melanie (Allira Jaques, a regular in the director's movies) to come with them, which pleases Donkey as he has a crush on her. On their way to the farm, they stop off at a pub and cause trouble when mentioning Charlie's Farm, even laughing off a warning from one of the locals and Jason's father (Kane Hodder). Now the girls know that they are making a stop at Charlie's Farm and reluctantly go along with the plan. After spending an uneventful night at the farm, they are joined by a couple of backpackers and they all go off to do some exploring of the farm. But, Charlie (Nathan Jones) has been waiting the whole time and now he's going to make these trespassers welcome with the help of his trusty scythe. Derivative slasher obviously made for the overseas market (horror faves Bill Moseley and Kane Hodder have cameos, Tara Reid is one of the leads) that owes a lot to Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the entire back story is pretty much a rip off of TCM) that takes about an hour to get to the killings, so there's a lot boring build up before, I have to say, a pretty decent body count. But, there's nothing new here and as I said, takes forever to get to the pay off.

Update for 17 June...
Welcome To Me is a comedy about Alice Klieg (Kristen Wiig), who suffers from borderline personality disorder and one day she wins the lottery, stops taking her medication and then heads to a casino to start living her new life. Obsessed with Oprah Winfrey, she goes to a local TV station owned by Rich (James Marsden) and his brother Gabe (Wes Bentley) and convinces them to put her on the air, well a whole heap of money also helped. The show is all about Alice and is basically a stream of consciousness consisting of settling old scores and bizarre segments involving things she wants to do, including spaying her dogs. But, this comes at a price with this fracturing her friendship with Gina (Linda Cardellini), who has hit a rut in her own life and ostercising her psychiatrist (Tim Robbins). After series events end in her having a breakdown, she decides to have one more show to right all her wrongs. Maybe I just don't understand the vagaries of mental illness, but I just didn't get this movie at all. While watching the movie, I felt like Jennifer Jason Leigh's character who quits after being exhausted by her co-workers just letting Alice do whatever she wants. This movie plays as a satirical comedy, but I just didn't get any of the humour at all. Yeah, not for me, move on...

Update for 16 June...
Today, another version of Madame Bovary, you know the story, girl marries doctor thinking she was going places (most likely Paris) and begins to live off credit from local purveyor of fine things, but quickly finds out that her husband isn't the big shot she thought, so she starts affairs with other men hoping for them to take her away and increases spending before it all comes crashing down when it's time to pay. No need to go into greater detail. In this version, Mia Wasikowska plays Emma Bovary with very little sympathy and her downfall doesn't seem as tragic as in other versions. Not a bad thing as this plays up Emma's selfishness more than it usually is. An alright interpretation, but there are better around. That reminds me I should look into recapping that Frances O'Connor version.

Update for 14 June...
A couple of quick updates today. I remember watching The Perks of Being A Wallflower a while ago (apparently December last year according to my caps), but most of the plot escapes me, something about a depressed boy trying to fit in at a new school and ends up befriending a brother and sister. Oh and it's set in the 80s. I remember liking the movie quite a lot, but not much more than that. Shame, I should've gotten around to capping it long ago. Anyway...
Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead is a zombie thriller where Barry (Jay Gallagher), who is living with his wife and young daughter, receives a phone call from his sister Brooke (Bianca Bradey) pleading with him to come get her as the shed she is in has been infested by zombies. But, before Barry can get there, she is saved by a group of soldiers headed by The Captain (Luke McKenzie), but is knocked out and awakens tied up on the back of a moving truck being injected with a substance from zombies by a mad doctor. Meanwhile, with his wife and child dying from the zombie virus and he having to kill them, Barry is left all alone, but is picked up along the way by a group of roaming zombie hunters who are just trying to survive. They roam around in a car powered by the fumes that zombies emit, but their lot is thinning fast and so is the fuel in the car. Back on the truck, the substance that has been injected into Brooke has given her the ability to control zombies and this is handy with a mad doctor wanting to perform more experiments on her and possibly kill her. After some failed attempts, she finally is able to escape the truck to find her brother and the last remaining zombie hunter Benny (Leon Burchill) have been unknowingly following her as they thought that the soldiers had good intentions. Now, the trio have to escape the onslaught from the soldiers, but they have one wild card in their hand. Interesting new take on the zombie genre, which is in need of an injection of new ideas. Lots of fun and blood and gore and an intriguing story and set of characters to boot. One of the best zombie movies I've seen recently.

Update for 12 June...
Dawn Patrol is a thriller where John (Scott Eastwood) tells his story while being forced held at gunpoint by a Muslim woman, possibly in Afghanistan. In 2008, John and his surfing star brother Ben (Chris Brochu) are just getting by living with their mother and father (Rita Wilson and Jeff Fahey) while their friends around them are losing their homes and if it's not that, the Mexicans are taking over. Ben sees his ex-girlfriend Donna (Kim Matula) moving on with a Mexican boy, Miguel and loses it, then promises to Donna that he will marry her before her father gets home from Afghanistan. Meanwhile, John beats up Miguel who may or may not have gang connections. A few mornings later, John sees Miguel's car drive off and then finds Ben shot dead on the beach. Vowing revenge, John gets Donna to get Miguel to meet up with her, where John ambushes him and kills him. But, all is not what it seems and Miguel's death sets off a series of cataclysmic events that will affect all of their lives. Very poor B-thriller that actually has a decent ending, but that's about it as the plot is completely preposterous and a number of scenes are just plain laughable. The conceit of John telling his story to a 'Muslim woman' is so badly handled that it's reveal is just another poor spot in the movie. Eastwood sure looks like his father, but has none of his charisma, in fact before Ben's death, he plays second fiddle to Ben and it feels like the movie is about Ben, which is just another problem to add to the list. To be honest, I don't think I've seen a new release movie this bad in a while, but at least you can say there's some good nudity from The Bold and the Beautiful's Kim Matula.

I'm not quite done with Alicia Vikander just yet...
Kronjuvelerna (The Crown Jewels) is a Swedish drama where Fragancia (Alicia Vikander) and Richard (Bill Skarsgård from Hemlock Grove), born on the same day at the same hospital, will be linked together forever whether they like it or not. Fragancia has been arrested for shooting Richard and in jail, she tells her story to the detective. On the day of their birth, Richard is dropped by his father and needs a plate in his head, but is slightly affected by this. Fragancia and Richard join the local kids ice hockey team with Fragancia marginalised because she's a girl although she quite good and Richard pushed hard by his father to be the next hockey star so at least he's good at something, but Richard is more interested in Fragancia. One day, Pettersson-Jonsson (Björn Gustafsson as an adult) joins the team and Fragancia instantly falls for him and he just happens to be an excellent player, so much so that he beats Richard to the position on the Swedish national team, where from there, Pettersson-Jonsson becomes an instant sensation and not just for his hockey skills. Richard's father (Loa Falkman) takes out his failure on he and his mother resulting in his mother leaving. Meanwhile, things seem to be going well for the Fernandez family until one day, Fragancia's mother Marianne (Alexandra Rapaport) is struck down with a sickness and Fragancia's father Fernandez (Michalis Koutsogiannakis) is sacked from his job at the shoe factory owned by Richard's father . Things get worse when Fragancia's brother Jésus, who has Down Syndrome, goes missing presumably drowned after an incident with Richard, who is distraught, leading to Fragancia's thirst for revenge. With more tragedy to come for the Fernandez family, Fragancia becomes more determined to kill Richard, but did she shoot Richard or was it someone else who has it in for him. A total downer of a movie with so much tragedy and bad stuff happening it's hard to be positive about the movie, but it's not bad. Feeling a bit like a dark fairy tale, it is told in a whimsical way that goes a long way to countering the misery and the ending is never in doubt, but this is a solid tale with signs of the things that come from Alicia.

Update for 8 June...
Home Sweet Hell is a black comedy where Don and Mona Champagne (Patrick Wilson and Katherine Heigl) live the perfect marriage with their two perfect children, well according to Mona. Don runs a furniture shop in town and is tasked to hire a new salesperson and in walks Dusty (Jordana Brewster) and Don hires her instantly, thanks to a gentle shove from another salesperson and good friend Les (Jim Belushi), although he is reluctant to tell Mona that he hired a beautiful woman as the salesperson. But, Dusty is great at her job and even better when she is seducing him, so she deserved her 'Employee of the Month' mantle. Then things go wrong fast when Dusty tells Don she's pregnant. Don decides to buy her off, but doesn't have the money to do so. That's when he tells Mona about the affair and after he initial disgust at Don, she formulates a plan to kill Dusty, which sickens Don, but he goes through with. It turns out Mona is a natural at the nasty stuff and after disposing of Dusty's body herself, Dusty's boyfriend Murphy (A.J. Buckley), who is in on the scam to extort money from Don, comes after Don. That's when Mona set up a plan to get Murphy and his cronies arrested for Dusty's murder. As the bodies pile up, Mona becomes more sociopathic and Don just has to figure a way out of this mess. A pretty good black comedy, better for the performances of Wilson and especially Heigl who is excellent as the sociopathic wife and gets all the best lines too. Her glee at cutting up Dusty is something else but is amusingly counterpointed with Don's being completely sickened by it all and his new found killer instinct. Worth a look if you like black comedies.

Update for 5 June...
Ned Rifle is a third in the saga of Hal Hartley movies that follows the son of Fay Grim (Parker Posey) and Henry Fool (Thomas Jay Ryan), Ned Rifle (Liam Aiken). Now 18 and living with his foster parents Reverend Daniel (Martin Donovan, gee, he hasn't been in a Hartley movie for a while) and Alice (Karen Sillas) who have made Ned very religious and on his 18th birthday, he decides to go on a trip to kill his father. He goes to see his mother, who is in prison for an act of terrorism and she tells him to see her brother, the writer Simon Grim (James Urbaniak) to find Henry. At Simon's hotel, he meets Susan (Aubrey Plaza), who is desperate to meet Simon but is having trouble as he hasn't left his hotel room is weeks. Simon is little help, but with Susan tagging along, Ned finds Henry is a mental institution thinking that he is the devil. Ned helps him get out of the mental institution, but Susan is still tagging along and it turns out that she has just left a mental institution herself because her thesis on Simon Grim's poetry was dismissed and now she's writing a biography on Fay Grim. Oh, and she happens to formerly be the 13 year old girl Henry slept with and spent 7 years in jail for. Looks like it's going to be a race to see who kills Henry first, Ned or Susan. Man, I haven't watched a Hal Hartley movie in a while, hell I'd completely forgotten about him. I think the last movie of his I saw was Henry Fool and that would've been the 90s! Hartley was such a staple of indie cinema in the 90s and I really like a few of his movies like Amateur and Trust, so Ned Rifle felt completely like nostalgia helped along by pretty much all of his favourite actors turning up at some stage. The thing is, Ned Rifle is pretty much a fans only movie because there seems to be so much history with these characters (although I haven't seen Fay Grim I realised after watching this) and jumping in now definitely feels like something is missing even with the addition of Aubrey Plaza seems perfect for the sensibility of the movie. The oddball sense of humour is still there, I particularly liked the whole bit surrounding the woman that calls Henry a pervert (as if!!!), but inevitably, Ned Rifle is an acquired taste, I didn't mind it, but Hartley has made better movies than this, not since the 90s though.
And yeah, I'm afraid that's a patch on her nipple in the sex scene below. What a shame...

Update for 3 June...
A couple of horror movies today.
The Devil's Hand is a horror thriller set in an Amish-like religious sect where almost 18 years ago, 5 girls were born on the same day and according to the sect this will cause the devil to come back to Earth 18 years from now and inhabit the last girl standing. In the now, Mary (Alycia Debnam Carey) and the four other girls are counting down to their 18th birthday, but when one of the girls goes missing, possibly killed by a sinister force, the sect begins to panic as it seems the prophecy is coming true. When a second girl dies along with a local boy she was making out with and they are found in the forest by Mary, a full on panic grips the sect with Sarah's (Leah Pipes) dad sacrificing himself and the sect leader (Colm Meaney) begins to proclaim the devil is coming much against the Mary's father Jacob (Rufus Sewell), who is skeptical of the prophecy. Mary becomes more inquisitive and when he stepmother (Jennifer Carpenter) admits to her that her real mother isn't dead, but shunned by the sect, Mary goes about finding her mother who has a surprise of her own. Rather hysterical horror movie where most of the behaviour of the backwards sect is all very creepy or extreme and all seems a bit much for a city slicker like me. I know religious sects can behaviour erratically, but some of the things that happen are all quite baffling or illogical. Debnam Carey is pretty good here, but that's not saying much because all of the women are hysterical or panicky idiots and she's the only character with any real depth here. A time passer if you're into religious horror movies, but otherwise forgettable.
The Hike is a survival horror thriller where a group of girls go on hiking and camping weekend to the woods. Led by Kate (Zara Phythian), who has just arrived back home after a stint fighting in Afghanistan and seeing her boyfriend die in a firefight, she brings along four of her friends who are all very foreign to camping it seems. Along their hike, they meet three men who are doing a bit of abseiling in the forest and a group of foreign campers who are quite surly to the girls. One girl goes looking for some firewood, but seems to be taking a while, so the girls go looking for her, but along the way meet up with a couple of the men playing around naked in the river. After having a bit of a play in the river with the men, they continue to look, but along the way, Kate is pushed off a bunch of rocks and breaks her arm and gets knocked out, possibly by one of the men. It seems the men want to have a bit more fun with the girls. And by fun, I mean their version of fun which involves violent sex and death. So, who is going to survive the night. A movie that so wishes it was far better horror movies like Eden Lake or The Descent (especially this movie as it was an unsubtle cameo from that movie's star Shauna Macdonald), but isn't even close in quality. Just the fact that apparently this rape and death binge is a regular occurrence already rings the alarm bells, but considering the men seem to be able to pick up the ladies without violent persuasion but still want it their way, including at one stage necrophilia, stretches the credulity of the movie. Hell, the only credible bit I can think of throughout the movie was the character of Kate, but even then they lumped her as the only character with the ability to fight back. There are far better movies that this of a similar variety, including ones already mentioned. This is a total last resort of a movie.

Update for 1 June...
Today's update is all about Alicia Vikander. It's rare that I don't watch a movie I cap, but about 15 minutes into A Royal Affair, I knew where it was going and I was going to get bored by it, so I just flicked through the rest. On the other hand...
Ex Machina is a sci-fi drama where Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a trip to the home of reclusive search engine entrepreneur Nathan's (Oscar Isaac) house to help him work on his secret project. Turns out that Nathan is working on building human-like androids and Caleb is there to test his latest creation Ava (Alicia Vikander), who is Nathan's most realised creation. Caleb is fascinated with Ava, he cannot believe that she even exists let alone be almost human-like, but something is wrong. Ava seems to have some control over the computer system running the house, which leads to a stunning revelation from Ava during a system shutdown that she thinks Nathan is treating her badly and he is not to be trusted. She also wants to leave her glass prison and Caleb seems sympathetic to her. Caleb comes up with a plan to help Ava escape from the increasingly drunk and unstable Nathan, but things do not go to plan. An excellent movie with a great idea that feels not that far removed from the now, but still feels like miles away. Basically a moral drama that works in a few showy twists, Ex Machina asks the question of whether what Nathan was doing is ethical or not and tells the story in an interesting manner that suggests that maybe we're not ready for the likes of Ava. Well worth a look.
