Update for 25 February...

It's prestige Thursday or something...

The Danish Girl is a drama where happily married artist couple Einar and Gerda Wegener (Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander) are about to have a major change in the relationship. Gerda's paintings are highly regarded, but she is not getting any big shows. Einar has a thing for wearing women's clothes, which Gerda accepts and decides to use their creation, 'Lili', as her model for her paintings and this change of model gets her work noticed and she gets her work shown in Paris. But something is changing in Einar and he starts to become more comfortable as a woman, in which as 'Lili', he begins to enter society with Gerda and Einar coming up with the idea that she is Einar's cousin. At her first outing, Henrik (Ben Whishaw) takes a shine to Lili and they kiss, but Lili runs away before anything else can happen. Lili begins to strike up a relationship with Henrik, but is reluctant to take it to the next step, but this causes a strain in the marriage between Einar and Gerda. In Paris, Gerda meets an art dealer Hans (Matthias Schoenaerts), who is an old friend of Einar, in fact they shared a kiss as children. Meanwhile back in Copenhagen, Einar is deteriorating, becoming skinnier and getting frequent nose bleeds. A doctor suggests radiation therapy to cure him of his feminine thoughts, but neither Einar or Gerda like this and pull him out of it. After many unsuccessful visits to numerous doctors, their friend Ulla (Amber Heard) suggest a doctor with a radical approach for the time. Dr. Warnekros (Sebastian Koch) suggests a sex change operation that may be the 'cure' that Einar needs. Interesting movie, maybe a little fanciful with its ideas, but works quite well thanks to the leads and the arrival of Schoenaerts who plays a surprisingly sympathetic character. Worth a look, but not for everybody.

Carol is a lesbian drama where Therese (Rooney Mara), a wannabe photographer who works in the toy department of a New York retail store, meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), a mother who is buying a Christmas present for her kid and Therese is instantly smitten. Carol leaves behind a glove, which Therese sends back to her, making sure she got the gift and glove. Carol asks Therese to come to her house one evening for dinner with her husband Harge (Kyle Chandler) out of town and they get along very well until Harge arrives home and begins to get suspicious of Carol. It seems that Carol and Harge's marriage is in its final stages and this evening has pushed things over the edge. Carol wants out of the marriage, but Harge wants custody of their kid, citing her being an unfit movie because of her 'immorality'. While Carol would like custody of her child, she does not stop seeing Therese and they decide to go on a trip to Chicago and along the way, they consummate their relationship, but it turns out that Harge is having them followed and will use evidence of their relationship to grant full custody of their kid. Carol decides to leave Therese and gets the help of her friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) to get her back to New York. But is Therese and Carol's relationship over or is this only just the beginning. Decent movie again lifted by the leads and a pretty solid story, but I do wonder how real it is for its time (as with The Danish Girl). Get the feeling it would be far uglier, particularly with authoritarian types, but there's almost a relaxed approach to homosexuality, the only real danger being that it is used as leverage in the custody of the kid. Otherwise, a pretty solid story and great stuff from Mara and Blanchett.

While capping the lesbian sex scene in Carol, Cate Blanchett unsurprisingly keeps her breasts mostly out-of-sight, but this cap below is interesting. Can't tell if it's a nipple or a patch on her breast. Definitely something though...

Was going to put the Carol update in the Aus/NZ actresses overseas section, but there is decidedly a lot of Rooney Mara in those scenes, so best to leave it in the movie section.

Update for 23 February...

Freaks of Nature is a horror comedy where in the town of Dillford, humans live alongside vampires and zombies and it is generally peaceful. At the high school, three human students are about to come together to save the town, they just don't know it yet. Ned (Josh Fadem) is a nerd who gets no respect at school or his family so he decides to get bitten by his zombie friend so he can become a zombie. Petra (Mackenzie Davis) wants to have sex with head vampire at the school Milan (Ed Westwick), but he instead bites her and turns her into a vampire so that she can be his forever. Dag (Nicholas Braun) is pitching for the school's B baseball team and accidentally knocks out their star hitter which inadvertently bumps him up pecking order for having sex with Lorelei (Vanessa Hudgens), which is an unexpected bonus. Then, the aliens arrives and everyone/everything loses their minds and start attacking one another. Forced together by circumstance, Ned, now a zombie, Petra, now a vampire and Dag decide to come up with a plan to stop the aliens. If only they can get everyone/everything else on side. Fun movie but doesn't really explain the concept of all the monsters living in harmony and not wanting to kill each other plus the alien angle is pretty weak. Probably best enjoyed by ignoring explanations and focusing on the ridiculousness of the scenario, where there's plenty of laughs and general silliness.

Update for 21 February...

Nina Forever is a black comedy where Holly (Abigail Hardingham), a 19 year-old studying to be a paramedic who works at a supermarket takes a liking to Rob (Cian Barry) after she finds out that he tried to commit suicide after the death of his girlfriend Nina (Fiona O'Shaughnessy). After she helps him with one of his wounds, they start going out and one thing leads to another and they have sex. Which is fine but during sex, the reanimated corpse of Nina appears on the bed next to them. This freaks them the both of them out, naturally and Holly leaves in a hurry. However, this does not dissuade Holly from being with Rob, so they give it another go and yet again during sex, Nina appears but instead of freaking out, they decide to include her into the action as this might help with Rob's healing, although that doesn't go as well as can be. They continue their relationship and Nina continue to appear during sex, no matter what and where they try and even when they move in together Nina continues to appear and leave a bloody mess behind. How are they finally going to rid Nina from their relationship? Interesting attempt at literalising an inner problem, not wholly successful or clearly explained, but not without a weird charm. It probably isn't helped that Nina is mostly an irritant throughout the movie, which is her point. The humour is very pitch black so it's not your typical horror comedy which it seems to be billed as, but there are some laughs mainly at the ludicrous situation. Nina Forever is an OK movie that won't be to everyone's liking.

Update for 15 February...

The Babymakers is a comedy where happily married couple Tommy and Audrey (Paul Schneider and Olivia Munn) decide to have a baby. After 9 months of trying, nothing and it's beginning to take a toll on their relationship. Convinced that he is not the problem because he donated sperm to by a wedding ring from Audrey, he reluctantly get his sperm checked and it turns out he's 'shooting blanks'. Tommy is unhappy about this a decides and after Audrey suggests adoption, he's having none of that and decides to get his frozen sperm to use with Audrey. Turns out there is only one vial left and it's promised to a gay couple. After unsuccessfully convincing them to let him have it although he rejects and offer of having sex with one of the men for the vial, Tommy decides to steal the vial with the help of his friends and a crazy Indian criminal. Another one of this new genre of movies involving wacky hijinks involving someone's sperm. There seems to be no end to them, none all that funny and usually end up being disgusting in some one. The Babymakers is no exception with the only decent humour involving the Indian criminal and his wacky ways. So much unfunny sex humour and the inevitable semen shower (Jesus, why is this necessary? Surprised there wasn't a joke about restocking...). While it's technically not a Broken Lizard movie, it involves a few of the members and sadly it's been diminishing returns since Super Troopers, which I quite liked (just seen they're currently making a sequel). No more sperm comedies please! Never funny.

Update for 13 February...

Swung is a drama set in Glasgow about couple David (Owen McDonnell) and Alice (Elena Anaya) who have hit a rough patch in their marriage. David is suffering from erectile dysfunction which isn't helped by his unemployment or his problematic relationship with his ex who won't let him see his daughter much. One day while filling in time, David happens on a swingers site and accidentally leaves it on his laptop which Alice discovers. At first, Alice is alarmed by this, but in an act of desperation at her own work, uses it to pitch a story idea which she then convinces David to join in, just to observe, for the story and who knows, maybe help their own relationship. After an initial meeting with a couple which ends badly, David and Alice have sex and maybe this is the thing to improve their own sex life, but their next encounter heads into an unexplored area and causes ructions between the couple that they may destroy their relationship. A muddled look into the world of swinging, never really getting deep enough to get any insight and more interested into the salacious (not that I have a problem with that as I do like Elena Anaya). There's is some good stuff involving a character played by Elizabeth McGovern, but that doesn't lead to much and only seems to be their to set up the conclusion than to explore anything deeper. To be honest, I found the film to be dull for the most part with no real insight into why people actually swing instead of the contrived reason used in Swung. Disappointing really...

Hide and Seek is a drama about two men and two women who decide to leave the city and live for a while in Lea's (Rea Mole) old family house in the country to live as they please. This involves entertaining one another and a rotating roster of sleeping (and more) partners, both straight and gay. One day, Charlotte's (Hannah Arterton) ex-boyfriend Simon comes to the house and attempts to get back with her, to no avail. The four continue on after Simon leaves. That's about it for plot and my interest level. Annoying people attempt to create a physical and emotional paradise for themselves and lets face it, if you're not a part of it, it's pretty boring to watch, even with copious amounts of sex. Ah well...

Update for 5 February...

The Diary of a Teenage Girl is a drama set in the 70s where aspiring artist Minnie (Bel Powley) wants to be loved and have sex. The latter happens when her mother's (Kristen Wiig) on-off boyfriend Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård) finally gives in and they begin an affair. Like all teenagers, Minnie is finding it hard to find her place. She worries about her body, has a distant relationship with her father (Christopher Meloni), has precious few friends save for Kimmie (Madeleine Waters), but their relationship often slips into sharing sexual experiences she ends up despising and she has a voracious sexual appetite which seems to put off the boys her age and even Monroe over time. She even develops a crush on Tabitha (Margarita Levieva), that leads to something more, but her life of keeping secrets from her dim mother is about to come crashing down and Minnie is going to need to grow up fast to get through this next phase. Interesting movie with a quality lead in British actress Bel Powley (though you wouldn't know it with her spot on American accent) who'll surely get a lot of notice after this movie. Basically, she is the movie with everything bouncing off her character and Bel handles it extremely well. While there's a lot of sex in the movies, there's also a lot of truth about sex too. Minnie is such a livewire that it's no wonder she frightens the men in her life. Rare to see such a female character, particularly a teenage girl like this, so The Diary of a Teenage Girl is a welcome difference from the norm.

Something new! Yes, I still do new stuff...

Sleeping With Other People is a romantic comedy where Jake (Jason Sudeikis) saves Lainey (Alison Brie) from getting kicked out from a dorm for making a racket then one thing leads to another and they lose their virginity to one another. In the present day, Jake is a womaniser and Lainey cheats serially and cannot break the habit of being with married doctor Matthew (Adam Scott), so she goes to a sex addiction meeting, decides it's not for her and leaves, but bumps into Jake, who she hasn't seen since that night. They strike up a friendship based on each other's shambolic love lives and according to their friends, Jake and Lainey are getting along like they are an actual couple. This is despite Jake trying to strike up a relationship with his boss Paula (Amanda Peet) and Lainey starting a relationship with Chris (Marc Blucas). Pretty good movie about two like-minded friends who could be more that is better because of its two leads, who work very well together. I was surprised by this because I've never really been a fan of either Sudeikis or Brie. There are the usual romantic comedy tropes, but they are made bearable by the likable duo and I like that both character's love lives have interesting complications, particularly Lainey's issues. I definitely enjoyed Sleeping With Other People a lot more than I thought I would.
