Update for 29 June...

Back in VOD land.

ToY is a drama about Chloe (Briana Evigan), a photographer/artist who is still mourning the death of her mother. While looking for subjects for her project involving sex workers, Chloe comes across Kat (Kerry Norton), a 40-something prostitute and becomes fascinated by her, wanting to know more about how she works and then forms a crush on her, which Kat reciprocates. Kat has her own problems with work drying up and being kicked out of her home. Chloe lets her stay in her apartment while she finds a place and they begin a relationship although Chloe is still paying Kat for her time. Chloe is invited to a charity gala in her mother's honour by her father (Daniel Hugh Kelly) and she invites Kat to come with her. But, it brings forth a stirring of emotions for Chloe involving her mother and her own issues and she takes it out on Kat, kicking her out of her apartment. This causes things to get worse for both Chloe and Kat until they end in tragedy. OK drama about two women who are both spiralling out of control, but find that they are better together. The movie completely underplays Chloe's issue which means that some of her final act dramas seem to come out of nowhere and the ending is a little too easy on Kat. ToY works better when it concentrates on Chloe and Kat together and is not a bad movie at all.

Update for 26 June...

Eadweard is a Canadian bio-pic about photographer Eadweard Muybridge (Michael Eklund), who in 1872 was developing a photographic project involving the motion of humans using multiple cameras after trialling this on animals. He meets Flora (Sara Canning), a lover of his work and they fall in love. After having his exorbitant funding for his project rejected, he is told to give a sample of what he is hoping to achieve, which he does. Eadweard invests his entire being into the project at the expense of his relationship with Flora who wants to be involved, but he won't let her. Eadweard thinks that Flora is having an affair with Harry Larkyns (Charlie Carrick), not helped by Flora having a child. Not happy with not being able to see the true motion of humans, he decides to continue the study with only naked subjects, which gets the usual objections, but allows him to portray motion better. Eadweard discovers that their child may in fact have been fathered by Harry which drives Eadweard to shoot Harry dead. He is charged with murder, but is found not guilty as the act was considered justifiable (!) and Eadweard is the last person to receive this verdict in America. Intriguing bio-pic about a highly eccentric character in Muybridge, excellently encompassed by Michael Eklund. Shame this movie won't get a bigger release (it snuck quietly to release here in Australia in the past few days) because Eklund performance is stunning and overwhelms the movie and is the main reason to watch it. The look at Muybridge's historic work is quite interesting too and that murder he commits is quite a shock. Well worth a look...

Australian VHS Classics for 23 June...

Here we go again with another visit to the vault and another couple of comedies from the 80s.

Australian Dream is a 1987 Queensland set dramedy that follows Dorothy Stubbs (Noni Hazlehurst), a put-upon housewife to her butcher now politician husband Geoffrey (Graeme Blundell) and their two kids. At a sex toy party, Dorothy meets the stripper, Todd (John Jarratt), and instantly begins to dream about him and starts to write about him in her stories for writing class she is taking. Her birthday is coming up and after dropping off her daughter to riding lessons, she again meets Todd, who is the riding instructor and he's also in a band, which Dorothy decides to hire for her party, which she feels is been taken over by her husband for campaign push. The party has a dress-up theme of 'dress who you want to really be' and Dorothy chooses to be Geoffrey which even he thinks is uninspiring. But after some more fantasising, Dorothy comes out in her night dress to the shock of Geoffrey who has invited the leader of his ultra-conservative party. And then Todd and his band arrived, unbeknownst to Geoffrey. It's going to be a helluva night. A throw everything at the wall and hope some of it sticks type of comedy where no attempt at comedy is left on the table. Sadly, not a lot of it works, a fair bit of sexual humour that feels there to be raunchy instead of funny. Australian Dream has a strangely subversive ending where Dorothy decides to take the road less travelled which was an interesting surprise. Hazlehurst is as usual pretty great as she played a lot of similar type roles during this period and holds the movie up well. Blundell and Jarratt are also good, but the rest of the cast is fairly anonymous. Not bad, but a fair bit misses the mark and there's a lot going on.

Relatives is a 1985 comedy where a family is getting to get together for the 80th birthday of Grandpa (Bill Kerr) at the old family farmhouse before it is to be sold off. Geoffrey (Ray Barrett), who owns and runs the farm but hasn't told the family, and his children Clare (Alyson Best) and Ross (Brett Climo), who brings Clare's Czech lover Alex (Marian Dworakowski) are joined by the rest of the family. Nancy and Peter (Rowena Wallace and Michael Aitkens) are trying to get their share from the house. Alfred (Robin Bowering) and Catherine (Jeanie Drynan) are carrying on an affair behind their spouse's back. Clare is planning to move to Czechoslovakia with Alex and Ross is planning on dropping out of university. And all Grandpa wants is a drink. Very low key family getting together light comedy and I think that is being very generous as there doesn't seem to be a lot to laugh at. Usually these types of movies are about very dysfunctional families, but this family is light on the drama and tension. What little comedy there is either too obvious, as in the Grandpa being a smelly, deaf and wanting a drink or too dark, as in one kid threatening to shoot his cousin. To be honest, I'd rather watch a bad movie than the boring movie that Relatives is.

As with all VHS updates, the quality isn't the best, but both movies are not bad quality and I doubt either with make the leap to DVD/Bluray. But, you never know...

Australian VHS Classics for 21 June...

Haven't gone to the VHS vault for a while, so here's two Melbourne comedy movies made by the same people and both released in 1984.

Future Schlock is a 1984 comedy set after the 1990 middle class uprising. Melbourne has a wall around the inner city where all the layabouts live in a ghetto while the middle class suburbanite or the 'subbies' live in perfect normality on the other side. Two people run amok through the suburbs in their Corvette, annoying all the subbies and cops while been lauded in the ghetto and they are Sarah (Mary-Anne Fahey) and Bear (Michael Bishop) aka Pancho and The Cisco Kid. They have a nightly show at Alvin's (Tiriel Mora) Hole where they sing up a storm and harass any subbies that dare to enter. After going to far, the subbies set their best two cops onto them Captain Fruitcake (Peter Cox) and Sergeant Tatts (Keith Walker). Meanwhile, during a subbies party where they were wreaking havoc, Sarah and Bear meet Ronnie (Tracey Callander), who is enjoying their antics and they decide to let her hang around, sharing everything they have and even joining in on their act. By now, Fruitcake and Tatts are closing in on Sarah and Bear, but that is exactly what they want. Bizarre comedy, barely 70 minutes in length, that is very rough around the edges (mainly due to its low budget) and the comedy is very dicey and not as funny as it thinks it is. Some characters are overdubbed for extra comedy wackiness, but it's terrible and doesn't fit the movie at all. Full of old Melbourne comedy types from that period which at least gives it a nostalgic view, but most don't have much to do. I will say that it's a bit of shock to see Mary-Anne Fahey (The Comedy Company) and Tracey Callander (Acropolis Now) naked in this movie (although I was tipped off to this a while back). Wow, a definite nice surprise, too bad the movie is an unfunny curio.

Channel Chaos is a 1984 comedy set in a television channel run by George (Clive Hearne) which is dying in the ratings, so new ideas are needed. These include a salacious game show called Showgirls Quiz featuring the JIggler (yep!) and Nudists with Leukemia (double yep...). This catches the ire of the censor Sir Ninian Richards (Peter Thompson) (Sir Ninian, the most 80s Australian gag ever) who has one hit, a terrible cop show starring Mike (Jay Hackett) and Kookie (Tim Scally), produced by Helen (Lyn Semmler) and written by Tim aka Ratface (Alan Pentland). Tim has plans to get a gig on 60 Minutes and has a file with damning evidence of something that is sure to make that happen. But he is found stabbed to death later in the day. Mike and Kookie have a crazy idea that might work and that's find out who murdered Tim as their characters and they film it. And they have narrowed down the suspects to the cross-dressing security guard, the stuttering newsreader or it could be someone else completely. Very politically incorrect comedy, but sadly not in any good way whatsoever because quite simply, Channel Chaos is desperately appalling. Gags so obvious you almost see yourself in the writer credits and when they're not obvious, they're simply groan inducing as if 'This is the best you can do?' It even ends with the entire cast and everyone else running after the killer in a way that even Benny Hill would've pinched and made his own. So many bad gags, absolutely nothing to recommend it, not even a pointless Gavin Wood cameo. So so so bad...

As usual with VHS updates, the quality isn't as the greatest, but both movies have come out quite well. I was reading up on Future Schlock and it looks like the original copies have all been lost and recorded over, so this may be the best it will ever be. As the filmmakers also made Channel Chaos, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same for that movie.

Update for 16 June...

Some VOD movies I've recently watched.

Creative Control is a drama set in the near future where an ad executive David (writer/director Benjamin Dickinson) is drowning both at work and at home with his wife Juliette (Nora Zehetner). He hangs around with his fashion photographer friend Wim (Dan Gill), who blatantly cheats on his wife Sophie (Alexia Rasmussen). David has a crush on Sophie and would very much like to get with her, but he finds the next best way to do so; by creating an avatar of her in his VR glasses. As he becomes closer to the real Sophie, he intensifies his 'relationship' with virtual Sophie, to the detriment of his home and work life. He's sacked from his job, Wim finds out about his longing for Sophie and Juliette cheats on him with the yoga instructor who took over her job. But, it's not all bad... OK movie that doesn't really overplay it's future setting, which is probably not a bad thing as movies tend to overplay future invention. Interesting concept but apart from the VR angle, there doesn't seem to be much of reason to set this movie in the future as the story is timeless. Sadly, neither the story and characters are all that interesting. Also, future Brooklyn is apparently still full of hipsters, surely some horrible new trend would have pervaded the area in the meantime.

Guns For Hire is a thriller about two women who are brought together in a most unexpected way. Beatle (Michele Hicks) is a hitwoman and tow truck driver who prefers to be a loner and her only human contact seems to be with a stripper/prostitute Carla (Sarah Shahi) and her psychiatrist (Orlando Jones). She is currently being interrogated by Detective Holt (Raffaello Degruttola). Athena (Ever Carradine) is a total screw-up whose car has being clamped and has to pay $3000+ worth of fines to get it back. She goes to Kyle (Ben Mendelsohn) to get a loan to pay it off and borrows his car but when Kyle's car breaks down and Beatle is called, Beatle see Kyle strangling Athena and she knocks him out. Beatle and Athena get to talking and Athena hatches a plan for Beatle to kill her and she will pay Beatle with the life insurance money. Athena also stays at Beatle's place to avoid Kyle who has his enforcer Bruce (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) track Athena and Beatle down, tearing shreds off Carla and the psychiatrist in the process. Beatle and Athena falls for one another but Athena still wants Beatle to kill her, but Bruce is closing in and he might just get in first. Um, except... Oh boy! Guns For Hire is a moderately distracting comic thriller with a lesbian angle, but then it does one helluva switcheroo which is so baffling I don't even know where it came from and I doubt it makes any sense to the rest of the movie. There really isn't any need for the twist, although the movie barely clocks an hour otherwise. Disastrous...

The Automatic Hate is a drama where Davis Green (Joseph Cross), who is going through a tough patch with his ballerina girlfriend Cassie (Deborah Ann Woll), is approached at a bar by Alexis Green (Adelaide Clemens), a woman he has never met before, but she runs away before they speak to one another. Later, she turns up at his house and he confront her and Alexis says that they are cousins. Davis has never heard of her family and his father Ronald (Richard Schiff) doesn't want to speak about his long lost brother and neither does his dying grandfather. Davis decides to visit Alexis at their home, but Alexis takes him to meet her sisters Annie and Amanda (Yvonne and Vanessa Zima, more Zima sisters!) and they have a night getting to know one another. The next morning, Davis meets their father and his uncle, Josh (Ricky Jay), but he pretends to be Alexis's lover. But Uncle Josh knows who he is and is surprisingly friendly towards him although he has no interest in meeting his brother as their issues are unresolvable. Alexis is very keen on Davis, a little too keen for cousins, but Davis follows her to a small house at the back of the farm only her father goes to. There they watch a film of the two brothers when they were younger and an unknown woman and find a bracelet that seems to be owned by that woman. Alexis and Davis have sex and Davis goes back to town promising to see Alexis more. Meanwhile, Davis's grandfather dies and Alexis convinces the family to go to the burial, which will bring the two brothers back together. At first, they are reluctantly amiable towards one another, but as a boozy family dinner continues, old problems rear their head, new ones erupt and the terrible secret is finally revealed. Intriguing movie helped along by two great leads in Cross and Clemens, even though Alexis is a very frustrating emotional rollercoaster of a character, but Adelaide Clemens plays her well. There's quite a bit going on, so the movie never loses interest. Well worth a look.

New Zealand Classics for 13 June...

That time of the week again with a few New Zealand movies.

The Last Tattoo is a 1994 dramatic thriller set during World War 2 when American soldiers rested in New Zealand. Kelly Towne (Kerry Fox) is a nurse who is working on the stopping the spread of VD amongst the soldiers and locals. She has come across a particularly virulent strain and one of the people she has deduced who has it is Rose Mitchell (Katie Wolfe), but she seems to have disappeared and it's because of a murder of an American soldier who was going to be her husband. The American soldiers, headed by General Frank Zane (Rod Steiger) and Commander Conrad Dart (Robert Loggia) have reluctantly decided to investigate the murder and get the injured Captain Michael Starwood (Tony Goldwyn) to discreetly investigate. This means that both Kelly and Michael are looking for Rose, which disgusts Kelly as she is after discretion for her patients. She finds Rose, but Michael follows her and chases her off. Meanwhile, the local union, who are very much involved in the murder are attempting to stop the truth from coming out. Kelly finds out that Commander authorised the test for Rose meaning he had sex with her and all of a sudden this bigger than she could imagine. Kelly and Michael fall for one another as they work closer together and get closer to the truth, but will the ever get to that truth? Interesting movie driven by two good performances by Fox and Goldwyn and an intriguing mystery even with the sexual disease angle, which is a strange plot device to set a movie on.

Fantail is a 2014 drama where Tania (Sophie Henderson, who also wrote the movie), a blonde woman who identifies as a Maori because of her father, works at a petrol station with her uncle Roger (Stephen Lovatt). Tania's mother is very sick and she and her brother Piwakawaka (Jahalis Ngamotu) want to leave their dead end town to find their father who apparently lives in Surfers Paradise. A workplace trainer Dean (Jarod Rawiri) begins to work with Tania and Roger and he's a bit of a stickler for the rules also a bit of a madman. Piwakawaka goes off to get some money for the trip, but he's really gone off with his friends to smoke drugs and muck about. Tania and Dean fall for one another, but their relationship is never going to last. Tania finds out what Piwakawaka is really up to and this puts in jeopardy not only their trip but a whole lot more. Simple tale where not a lot happens, but a 76 minute run time means enough happens to be fairly watchable. Tania's appropriation of the Maori culture is a tough sell and her accent is pushing it, but it is surprisingly well handled with Dean, an actual Maori (although slightly reluctant to embrace the culture) constantly questioning this. Not a bad movie, but not a lot to recommend it either.

How To Meet Girls From A Distance is a 2012 comedy where perennial loser in love Toby (Richard Falkner) is sent to an unusual dating coach Carl (Jonny Brugh), who sets him up with his secretary, but that ends predictably in disaster. While helping out his lesbian friend Emma (Aidee Walker), he spies Phoebe (gorgeous Scarlet Hemingway) and instantly falls for her. Which would be fine if she didn't have a boyfriend, the obnoxious Brad (Owen Black). So, Toby begins to stalk Phoebe to get to know her, but also stalk Brad, so that he can find a way to get them to break up. Everything goes incredibly well and he manages to start going out with her. And it would have gone even better if he hadn't left remnants of his stalking lying around. She instantly dumps Toby, leaving him devastated, but he will do anything to get her back and who knows, maybe he'll get the girl of his dreams. Light comedy that quite a bit silly but is an easy watch despite being only an OK movie.

The Last Magic Show is a 2009 light comedy about magician/escapologist Ronny Roman (writer/director Andy Conlan), but is basically unemployable because of his general weirdness. He is on the look out for a new assistant after finding his previous assistant having sex with his rival. He spots Celestine (Jade Collins) and attempts to get her to be his assistant. He gets a gig at a hospice, but it turns out it's only to give drinks to the ailing patients, set up by a nurse Sarah (Georgie Hill), who he strikes up a friendship with. He also becomes friends with one of the patients. Celestine eventually accepts his offer to be his assistant and this leads to the biggest gig of his life on live television. I found it hard to get over the incredibly mannered performance of the lead which drags the movie to a crawl. Then there's this dope walking around all day in his magicians gear which was just ridiculous. It also doesn't help that the story is not at all that interesting and it's attempts at wackiness are incredibly banal. Ah, forget it...

Update for 10 June...

Finally got around to finishing the Sin City: A Dame To Kill For update after the redux of the first movie two weeks ago. Hadn't seen this movie 'til now and I have to say that it's a fairly disappointing movie. Mainly because it feels like it's rehashing the first movie, but a confusing timeline doesn't help as sometimes these stories feels like they play before the stories in the original. Though I get the feeling we're not supposed to care about a timeline. Also, two stories end exactly the same with bloodbaths, neither of which are all the intriguing. Plus I had a problem with perspective of the scenes which seems off numerous times throughout the movie. There are a number of times where it looks like characters are walking up or down hill and I don't remember this being a problem in the first movie. It's quite strange. I think the major problem is that it all feels like more of the same, never really differentiating much from the first movie, where the stories feel fresh and engaging. None of the stories feel like that in the movie although I didn't mind the Jessica Alba getting revenge story, well until it ends in another bloodbath. At least it had something intriguing. While Eva Green plays a great femme fatale, the story is stale and uninteresting despite the copious nudity from Eva. Sadly, I think there's a certain laziness going on in the movie, it would certainly go towards explaining that perspective issue. I really like the first movie so this is such a shame.

New Zealand Classics for 6 June...

New Zealand Classics unveils three movies today.

Cupid's Prey is a 2003 thriller set in the US but made in New Zealand where grad student Rebecca (Katrina Browne) is invited by her boyfriend Matt (Glen Drake) to his family's estate to do some 'studying' and to meet his parents, Jeremy (Jack Wagner) and Iris (Joanna Pacula). They are very accommodating of her, in fact Jeremy wouldn't mind being with Rebecca and he gets the chance after she sees Matt flirting with another woman at a party. Rebecca stops Jeremy before it goes too far, but Jeremy is persistent and a man with some sway at the university and uses it to get Rebecca a prime research position. Rebecca continues to reject his advances while Matt attempts to woo his way back with her. Sick of rejection, Jeremy tells Rebecca to stop being involved with the family and to make it clear, he withdraws his support on her research position. It turns out that a housekeeper was murdered on the estate and Jeremy was suspected of murder although a transient was arrested. The harassment continues and now Rebecca must fight for her life, but is Jeremy the real problem or is he covering up for someone more sinister. Basically a made-for-TV movie with a little bit more sex than usual, nothing special, but watchable even with a ludicrous plot that sets up a silly twist. Katrina Browne is not bad here but sadly she seems to have quit acting. She has a brief nude scene in this movie, but has a slightly better one in the TV show Outrageous Fortune.

The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell is a 2010 drama about Gazza (William McInnes) who has the world at his feet, well he thinks he does. He is running for local council, although he hasn't told his long suffering wife Gail (Robyn Malcolm). His sons are the best two go-kart racers locally and could be going onto bigger things and that's all that matters to Gazza. It doesn't matter that he has mounting debts or that his marriage is falling apart. Then during a race, older son Marc (Josh McKenzie) pulls a move on his brother Ed and it causes Ed to have a massive crash and he falls into a coma and he it's not looking good. Everything comes crashing down for the family and all of Gazza's lies are about to come back to bite him on the arse. Gail has an affair with Gazza's mate and her boss, Ron (Joel Tobeck) and decides to leave Gazza. Marc gives up go-karting racing, distraught at what has happened, but he also becomes friendly with the daughter of the man Gazza is trying to scam a job off. It is looking more likely that they will have to make a decision on whether or not to 'pull the plug' on Ed. And only a miracle can save Ed and family now. Strange movie that feels like it's going to be a feel good comedy about go-kart racing, but turns very dour about 15 minutes in. And there's not much uplift either, it almost feels like the inevitable happy ending is not going to happen. Having said that, The Hopes and Dreams of Gazza Snell is a pretty decent watch with solid leads that elevate the movie slightly above average. Would've loved more go-kart racing although the scene where the older brother drives on the major roads at night is pretty good.

The Devil Dared Me To is a 2007 stunt man comedy where Randy Campbell (Chris Stapp) comes from a long line of stuntmen. After his father and mother die, he grows up in a stuntman troupe headed up by Dick Johansonson (Matt Heath), a terrible stuntman who treats his team like crap. One day, a promoter from the North Island gives Dick the chance at hitting the big time if his show excites him, but Dick has lost his nerve and Randy seizes his opportunity and performs a reckless stunt that impresses the promoter and the team gets to travel to the North Island. Randy also becomes reacquainted with an old friend 'Tragedy' Jones (Bonnie Soper). But, Dick is insanely jealous of Randy's rise to fame, so he rigs Randy's car to fail, except the mechanic manages to swap over an explosive Dick had placed onto Dick's car and he ends up losing control and killing his fiancee and her lover. Dick goes to jail for 5 years and Randy becomes a movie stunt man where he again bumps into Tragedy and they begin a relationship. 5 years later, Dick is released from prison, still jealous of Randy and wanting revenge and he decides to do so by tempting Randy with a bridge jump in a rocket car. But, Randy has rigged the car to blow. Will he make the jump and then finally live his dream of jumping across Cook Strait. Silly and obvious comedy, not without one or two laughs, but way more obvious ones that don't work. Having a character named Dick who's a dick and wears a T-shirt with Dick across the front is the level we're working at here and it doesn't get better. I don't mind a good stuntman movie, but there's not enough stupid stunts and not enough decent laughs.

Update for 5 June...

A quick update from a new Australian movie.

Observance is a thriller where private investigator Parker (Lindsay Farris) takes a mysterious job watching Tenneal (Stephanie King) for an unknown reason, but he needs the money to help salvage what is left of his marriage. He views Tenneal being apparently attacked by her fiancée Bret Buchanan (Tom O'Sullivan), a man from a rich family with an apparently notorious past and sketchy reasons for their wealth, which tempts Parker to call the police, but is talked out of it by the mysterious employer. When he takes a shower, he cops what he assumes to be a severe burn, but he does not get it checked out and it causes him to become violent ill. But, he continues the job even when he is warned off doing so by Bret and a glitch in his sound recording of Tenneal's place. But what is going on and why is Tenneal being targeted and Parker being used to watch her? No really, please help because I've got no fucking idea what's going on. There's a great mood set for something big and surprising to happen, but the ending seems inevitable even though I have no idea why it happened. It doesn't help that there's a late shift in the focus of the movie which muddies the reason for Parker being there. I'm sure it's more obvious than I'm say it is, but there's so few clues as to why anything is happening, I'm just don't understand. Maybe I was just looking for a big pay-off as the mood is very eerie and deserving of one. Instead, the ending seems obvious, even if it isn't explained fully. Probably just me...

And let's forget about the sadly poor attempts at American accents to help with getting overseas distribution.
