Update for 31 March...

Another 3 new movies.

Some quick synopses: Novitiate is a drama about a young woman Cathleen (Margaret Qualley) who decides to become a nun in the early 1960s when the church is going through some big changes which the strict Mother Superior is very reluctant to implement. The process to become a nun is difficult and it has many casualties along the way but Cathleen is getting through the process well until she starts to get sexual urges which causes her to stray from her path no matter what she does to stop it. Gotta say for a story I know little about or have much interest in, I was very intrigued by the movie and the process of how to become a nun. Ends up being a pretty decent movie and no one is more surprised that I liked this movie more than myself.

Allure is a drama about a troubled woman Laura (Evan Rachel Wood) who meets a teenage girl Eva (Julia Sarah Stone) during a cleaning job and develops a crush on her and then becomes friendly with her. After Eva has an argument with her mother, Laura convinces her to leave her home and live with her without telling her parents in an arrangement that consensual but feels like Eva has been kidnapped. Laura begins to seduce Eva and over time, Eva comes to reciprocate, but trouble follows Laura and it's not long before their 'relationship' begins to fall apart. Not bad drama that threatens to be a thriller but never really does become one. Both leads are very good and make a strange and possibly unbelievable relationship work although the ending feels a little anti-climatic, possibly because it isn't a thriller.

Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool is a about the final days of actress Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening) who was in a relationship with a much younger British actor Peter Turner (Jamie Bell) just before she died. Pretty decent movie.

Update for 29 March...

Technically a Spanish update with two Spanish actresses in English language horror movies plus an Argentinian actress, so we'll go with that.

Some quick synopses: The Lodgers is a thriller about a twin brother and a sister (Charlotte Vega) who are cursed to live in a house that is haunted by apparitions that allow them to stay as long as they follow the rules. But when the sister meets a crippled young man, she falls for him and starts breaking the rules causing the apparitions to become restless and putting the twins in danger. Muse is a thriller where a professor tries to make sense of the suicide of his lover (Manuela Vellés) and then starts having dreams about a woman being ritualistically murder which turns out to be very real. When he investigates, he meets a woman (Ana Ularu) who has had the same dream and the two work together to work out who was killed and why it involves them. Both movies are only OK. I didn't get around to watching the Argentinian movie La Cordillera.

Update for 27 March...

Another couple of new releases.

Escape Room is a thriller where a group of friends and family are come to celebrate Tyler's (Evan Williams) birthday when his girlfriend Christen (Elisabeth Hower) gives him a gift that he, Christen and five of their friends (including Australian actress Annabelle Stephenson) will never forget. Christen has got them tickets to a game called Escape Room and when they get there, they are blindfolded and put into separate soundproof rooms where they need to solve a series of puzzles to able to open the doors to each other's rooms. All except Christen who seems to have disappeared. Things start off easy enough and before long they are altogether, but after one mistake, two of the friends are gassed to death and it soon becomes clear that the game is very real and their lives are at stake if they don't correctly answer the puzzles. Also, they must save Christen, who has being stripped of her clothes and put into a cage, before time runs out. Well, it's inevitable that Saw will get a mention in regards to Escape Room with the similarities quite obvious and I'd like to say that it's better than the average Saw movie, which wouldn't be hard, but it really isn't with the game is rigged from the beginning with the Saw-like opening scene and never really recovers. At least Saw has a arch-villain and disciples to keep the movie interesting, no such luck here with an ending so clueless it only asks more questions and answers none. At least Elisabeth Hower is naked for most of the final act to at least keep some interest as the movie ends in a baffling non-explanation of what just happened.

Looking Glass is a thriller where Ray (Nicolas Cage) and Maggie (Robin Tunney) are looking for a fresh start and buy a motel in the middle of nowhere in a rushed sale from an elusive previous owner. Ray tries to make a fist of it and one day discovers a secret passage way that leads to a hall of two way mirrors into ever room and Ray soon becomes fascinated with the few regulars that populate the place. Local cop Howard (Marc Blucas) looks in on Ray like he did the previous owner but seems a little too invested in the place. One day one of the regulars (Jacque Gray) disappears while the next day Ray finds a dead pig in the pool with a photo of a girl who died at the hotel before they bought it. When the regular turns up dead, Howard turns his suspicions on Ray and Maggie is not so sure he didn't do it going by his recent behaviour. Ray is desperate to find out the mysteries of the place before he completely loses his mind or before Maggie leaves him, but that looks like a losing battle. OK little thriller that slowly gets to its destination but not before some weird turns particularly regarding the previous owner that sends the movie off the deep end before it decides to finish. The potential for something better is definitely there but every time Looking Glass threatens to get interesting it brings back weirdo cop Howard to drag the movie down. And Tunney is sadly wasted in a nothing wife role. But like a goldpanner looking for little pieces of gold, I'll keep coming back to the monthly Cage release with hopes of finding that gold. Sadly, it's not here.

Another couple of new movies both of which are lesbian dramas. Some good lesbian action (and long, girl-girl sex scenes tend to be long, thankfully) but not really any nudity although after the credits in The Feels there is a quick scene highlighting a game of guess the boobs that was to be played earlier in the movie except for drama getting in the way. But it is played in the final scene of the movie with the after credits showing four sets of unidentified breasts. No idea whose they are, but there was to be guessing of the four friends (not Angela Trimbur or Constance Wu), so it could be the other four actresses, who knows..?

More new movies, four in fact.

Welcome The Stranger is a drama/thriller about Alice (Abbey Lee) who visits her brother Ethan (Caleb Landry Jones) after 5 years attempting to reconcile although Ethan is extremely reluctant because she's unstable. Alice starts seeing visions of a naked woman who is taking her to a spaceship hovering on the property. Turns out the woman Alice is seeing is Ethan's actress girlfriend Misty (Riley Keough). Then just as Alice and Ethan look like getting along, Misty arrives and Alice becomes insanely jealous of her and Ethan and goes about making sure that Ethan is hers once more. Baffling movie where practically nothing happens until Riley Keough properly arrives, but by then the movie is so preposterous it doesn't recover. Hell, there's a three minute scene finding a pen if you really want to know what type of nothing happens in the movie. Ugh...

The Unseen is a British thriller where voice actress Gemma (Jasmine Hyde) and Will (Richard Flood) live the perfect life with their son until one night their son drowns in their pool. Gemma and Will struggle with the grief, so much so that Gemma starts suffering from random bouts of blindness where she is saved by Paul (Simon Cotton), who just happens to be passing by. They continue to struggle with Will starting to hear their son's voice and things just get worse. Paul offers to lend them his country house as an attempt to refresh and they reluctantly take up the offer, but their time there doesn't help much and Gemma continues to get the random bouts of blindness and during one stretch of blindness she thinks she hears her son. Paul has had enough of being away from home and his son's voice so her goes back home without Gemma and she becomes reliant on Paul, but something is very wrong and it will cause both Gemma and Paul to fight for their life. OK thriller that has a good idea and is fairly intriguing with a few creepy moments, particularly the discovery of Paul's intentions. I just wish the movie had the conviction to go with an ending that isn't as silly as it is. It's this close to being a great little thriller otherwise.

Eat Me is a drama where Tommy (Jacqueline Wright) decides to kill herself and decides on pills being the best way to do it. As Tommy is passed out, two men Bob and Frank (Brad Carter and Michael Shamus Wiles) break into the house and find Tommy and think that she's dead, so they decide to rape her. Well, they would if either of them could get it up. Frank decides to leave to get something to eat before coming back to have another go and Bob decides to wait. Tommy finally wakes up and over the next hour, a weird power struggle develops where Bob tries to assert himself over her and Tommy just wants to die and attempts to goad the weak Bob to do it. Bob treats her like shit, but he can't kill her or even rape her and then a surprising thing happens; they make a connection of their own self-loathing and then Frank comes back. Odd movie that's one part repulsive (a rather big part) and one part surprisingly emotive and that's far and away the best thing about this movie, but it takes a long while before it gets there and it's not enough to remove the aftertaste of what goes on before it.

Josie is a drama where Hank (Dylan McDermott) is a loner who is wiling away the days trying to forget something from his past before a teenage girl Josie (Sophie Turner) moves into the motel. Hank becomes enamoured with her but at the same time a school mate Marcus (Jack Kilmer) also has designs on her. Hank and Marcus have a running battle because Hank is a guard at the local high school and Marcus likes to make trouble and now they have an extra reason to continue their little fight. Hank and Josie become close, dangerously close including confiding his secret to her. Hank and Marcus' fight escalates and it will culminate in one night that will start with Hank and Marcus making up at the insistence of Josie, but ends in an unexpected way. OK movie with an unbelievable twist that makes one character's existence seem a bit much, but the movie just gets by because of the relationship between Hank and Josie with both actors doing a pretty good job.

Update for 20 March...

What, a couple of new movies? They're still making them are they? Anyway, I'm going to take a break from the 90s movies for the moment as I have another pile building up just of new movies, so it's time for some new stuff.

Becks in a lesbian drama where Becks (Lena Hall) is very much in love with bandmate Lucy (Hayley Kiyoko). When Lucy goes to Los Angeles to be on a music reality TV show, Becks decides to leave New York and follow her, but when she gets there, she finds Lucy with another woman. Broke and nowhere else to go, Becks ends up back home with her mother Ann (Christine Lahti), who reluctantly accepts her sexuality. She also catches up with her former friend/lover Dave (Dan Fogler), who now runs a bar in town and lets Becks play a few songs there for tip money. She also offers guitar lessons and that is how she meets Elyse (Mena Suvari), who married the boy who cruelly outed Becks as a lesbian at high school. Over time, they become friends, but Elyse seems more than interested in Becks and after Becks convinces Elyse to sing a song with her at the bar, they begin an affair that is never going to end well, particularly with Becks desperate to get back to New York. Pretty good movie that I had no idea what it was about as I got it a month or so back and had completely forgot about it until I look at the list of new movies I had and was surprised to find out it was a decent lesbian drama with a few familiar faces. Being trying to work out where I'd seen Lena Hall before and found out she was in an episode of Girls also playing a lesbian who attempts to have sex with Hannah at some retreat. And she's quite good here, probably cast for her musical abilities, but she's charming presence throughout. Not a bad little movie.

Live And Die In La Honda is a thriller where Blake (Blake Shields) receives a call from old army buddy and former lover Vic (Lili Bordán) to come to La Honda, where she owns a bar, to help her find her missing brother. Blake reluctantly agrees as Vic is like a drug to him and he thought that was the last he'd ever see of her. When he gets to town, he finds out that tracking down Vic's brother is a lot harder than he expected, but also he's been followed by Rita (Mercy Malick) who knows the person Blake is looking for, Joe Cooper (Bernard Curry), a friend of Vic's brother who could help him find him. Rita and Joe decide to kill Blake and send a couple of guys to do so, but they fail, so they do the job themselves, only for to Vic get the jump on them and kill them first then bury them in the mountains. But, there is residual damage from the shooting that will cause a ripple between Vic and Blake just as they were falling for each other once more. OK thriller and at 80 minutes, a pretty easy watch without really stretching itself, but it does have a fairly decent body count for a smallish thriller and I quite like Lili Bordán, so I didn't mind the movie.

Update for 15 March...

All about Linda Fiorentino in today's 90s update, OK, one movie is from 1988 but it features Linda. Rewatched The Last Seduction for the first time in years and it's still a stone cold classic and Fiorentino is such a perfect 'bitch' in the movie. Get the feeling this movie is slightly (or maybe more) forgotten which would be a shame that a movie this good could be left behind. Such a shame Linda no longer acts, a big loss.

Sadly, the quality of The Last Seduction isn't great despite being in HD and I don't know why as it's been taken from a Bluray source. Need to get the original Bluray to make sure, but as I said, the movie's sort of forgotten and only seems to have a Bluray release in the UK/Europe, not even a US Bluray release and definitely not an Australian release, there's barely a DVD here. What a load of shit!

Update for 11 March...

The 90s have never ended with 3 more movies today. Never seen Return Of The Living Dead 3 before and there's plenty of that Brian Yuzna-style gore throughout also some fairly decent nudity from Melinda Clarke, who I remember from a couple of other 90s B-movies, Killer Tongue, which was a cult staple on SBS in the late 90s, early 00s and a movie Melinda was clearly cast in because of ROTLD3 and the utterly terrible Return To Two Moon Junction, particularly disappointing considering how tame it is compared to the original (Melinda has far better nudity in ROTLD3) but just generally terrible in quality with that complete loss male lead. Also not to forget she was in Spawn. Now Melinda's regularly on American TV, so these type of movies seen long in the distance.

Also, I love how half the plot of Cousin Bette revolves around Elisabeth Shue's arse...

Update for 7 March...

A break from the 90s pile with a couple of newly released Australian movies.

The Butterfly Tree is a drama about father and son, Al (Ewen Leslie) and Fin (Ed Oxenbould), who are struggling to move on after the death of their wife/mother. Al is a university lecturer who is in a reluctant relationship with one of his students Shelley (Sophie Lowe), while Fin concentrates on his love of insects, particularly from the tree in his backyard that attracts butterflies. One day, Fin comes across a pile of junk that has been left outside by Evelyn (Melissa George), who has just moved to town and he sees her dancing with butterfly wings as Evelyn was a burlesque dancer. Al also meets Evelyn and asks her on a date, which she accepts. The next day, Fin meets Evelyn and sees that she is opening a flower shop and she offers him a job. Fin builds a connection with Evelyn while Al clumsily misses the date thanks in part to Shelley. Evelyn has a secret that may affect her friendship with Fin, but something closer to home will have a bigger impact on the friendship and maybe even the lives of those involved. OK drama with an engaging story between the three leads that while it has a highly contrived element that is used to artificially forward the drama later in the movie, it also helps strengthen the friendship between Evelyn and Fin.

Lazybones is a low budget comedy/drama about Ben (Jackson Tozer), a comedian who is really an Uber driver, who's struggling in life and in love. He lives with his brother Troy (Troy Larkin) and hangs around with his friend Lucy (Fabiana Weiner) while trying to make it in comedy. At a politically incorrect dress-up party, Ben meets Jean (Tegan Crowley) and they hit it off despite his sexual shortcomings, but then they part and he can't get in touch with her. After a successful gig, he meets Sam (Eva Seymour) and they go out on a date, but it goes incredibly badly because he fails to recognise her disability and then makes it worse by using it as a part of his act that goes incredibly badly. Ben has hit a rough patch in his life but can he get out of it? OK movie with a decent laugh or two but struggles to figure out how to end and doesn't really amount to much, but then you wouldn't expect much more from a mumblecore movie.

Update for 2 March...

A whole bunch of 90s movies today. I've liked Exotica since I watched it first in the 90s where Atom Egoyan had a great run of movies (The Adjuster, The Sweet Hereafter) and I think this may be his best as it's a great story that ends in an unexpected way plus it's set mostly in a strip club. I was gonna say that this was the first time I saw Mia Kirshner but then I remember Love And Human Remains which for some strange reason I was obsessed with in the 90s, watched it way too many times on VHS, now it's very hard to find and been out of print for a while. Must try to track that one down, haven't seen it in a while. Put all the Mia Kirshner scenes into one 10 minute video because I found it hard to separate as it's full of both long scenes where not much happens and short scenes where too much happens. I thought about doing a video with the background strippers but I quickly realised that it was just madness.

Never seen Kids before making this update although I remember hearing plenty about it back when it was released. I think maybe I wasn't quite 18 yet and that's why I never got around to seeing, but probably I was just not that interested in it. Watching it I was expecting something that was as shocking as the word was back in the day, but honestly, it's just another Larry Clark/Harmony Korine movie and having seen other movies they've made, Kids didn't really stand out as any more controversial and boundary pushing than the others (surely Ken Park is far more controversial, still banned in Australia...). Maybe because it was the first of it type, it shocked a few people, but it's really just the same stuff as most of their later stuff. There's even some scenes where you feel some sympathy for the two male leads, sure, they piss it up against the wall by the end of the movie, but it's not all disgusting/selfish behaviour. It's also the first film of the only two actors that had any sort of career after that movie, Chloë Sevigny and Rosario Dawson.

Tom DiCillo was one of those 90s indie directors that made low key, slightly odd movies that had small cult followings back in the day. Living In Oblivion is basically a movie about making one of those movies. Both funny and frustrating, it has very good turns by his regulars Steve Buscemi and Catherine Keener but I think it's one of those movies that is best watched in the era it was made than 20 years later when it's relevance has diminished quite a lot. I mean DiCillo basically a TV director now and hasn't made a movie since Delirious in 2006 (with the sadly missed Alison Lohman). Gotta get around to finding DiCillo's Johnny Suede as it has nude scenes from Australian actress Alison Moir who was in a few American movies in the early 90s.
