In this never-ending pursuit of overdoing things, now comes a HD redo of Skins, many years later. Got these from HD Web Downloads, so not perfect HD, but good enough. In the series 2 update, I'll release some collages from the first two series.

The first series of Skins is probably the best, even though it was always a show that was erratic in quality. It is a pretty solid start to the series with a solid build-up of character, lead by Tony Stonem (Nicholas Hoult), a cocksure young man who loves Michelle (April Pearson), but manipulates her while looking for other girls. When she finally dumps him, Tony goes about manipulating her back, which he does until he gets hit by a bus and leaves him with limited abilities. This ends up affecting the second series in a negative way as Tony is the most interesting character in the show. And there's not enough of Cassie (Hannah Murray) is series 1, who after getting the second episode, largely disappears. One thing I liked about the show was how the parents were played by fairly well known actors, it works well.

Series 2 should be up on the weekend, but as there are vastly more videos, it might need to be a two or three part update. Other series should follow, although I gave up on Skins after series 4 and haven't seen series 5, 6 or the recent final season, so they'll need to be watched.

While the whole first season was all fun and parties and Tony acting like the biggest arsehole ever, series 2 has this awful pall over it all thanks to Tony being hit by a bus and having to learn to be himself again. While it's probably accurate that all his friends would be reluctant to be around him, it still brings the series down. And while it's great to have more Cassie, she's so self-destructive that even she's a misery to be around. And Sid's no fun when he finally gets the girl of his dreams Michelle, he needs to be the lovable loser, although the death of his father is handled strangely well. Amazingly, Skins manages to turns around this tailspin of series when Tony goes to look at a prospective college and then his ever loyal sister Effie (Kaya Scodelario) pulls off a Machiavellian heist of the social structure of the group (more about the frustration of Effie when I release series 4 redos next decade). And then Chris (who bizarrely becomes the most interesting character in this series, even though he is in the last stages of a terminal genetic disorder) dies and that's handled rather well, although there is that ridiculous car chase involving his coffin. Ah well, at least series 2 isn't a complete write-off.

A new group of teenagers for series 3 following Effy (Kaya Scodelario), who's Tony's sister, Pandora (Lisa Backwell, who featured in one episode in series 2) and a new gang of teens, pretty much getting into the same troubles as the previous group, which is a shame because there was so much potential with Effy, but she turned out to be a complete mess involved in an unlikely love triangle (aren't most love triangles unlikely?) and then in series 4, goes completely off the rails, although there are signs here of that happening.

Another set of videos from Skins series 3, this time focus on the two girls who played the lesbian couple in this series, which I think was probably the best storyline of the series, moreso the start of series 4 where it all goes wrong. In season 3, the relationship is tentative, one in definite about her affections, the other is hesitant, not necessarily for the obvious reasons. It's one of the few storylines through these two series that is handled well and both are fairly interesting characters. Mind you, by the end of season 4, most storylines are shot to pieces, including this one, but more about when I get there.

Over to series 4, which was so jumbled that the fate of one character is never known (maybe that will be address in series 7...). Most characters are a complete mess in this series, even more than usual. The relationship between Emily and Naomi hits a major road bump when one is caught cheating and it results in the death of the person she cheated with. Bizarrely, they decide to make each other miserable instead of split. Fair enough.

So, Effy, who'd become insufferable during series 3, becomes miserable and suicidal in series 4, which is at least interesting that the show is focusing on teen suicide, but of course, as is Skins way, they blow it on a ridiculous plot involving her psychiatrist becoming her stalker and then disposing of Freddie (Lord knows what happened to him), only for Cook, who has spent pretty much all of series 4 evading the police and basically popping into everyone's story because of it, end up saving the day, apparently. And poor Panda got the short shrift in series 3 doesn't even get her own episode in series 4 and only turns up to keep the interesting immigrant Thomas in the show. Ah, it's over, it's done, move on...

I've just finished watching series 5 and 6, so stuff from that should be up soon, maybe from next weekend. I've never gone that deep into Skins before, so it's all new ground from here on in. Yay!

Finally watched series 5 and 6 of Skins after pulling out when I first attempted a few years back. Then I waited for it to be on TV, then it wasn't on TV until mid this year and only on the pissy multichannel, so poor quality for capping (good one SBS!). Plus, I plain couldn't be stuffed...

Anyway, series 5 started with something interesting that they hadn't really explored. The bullying of a character played by Dakota Blue Richards (from The Golden Compass). But, this is Skins, so they wimped out and slowly transformed her outsider into just another of the gang. Yep, Skins isn't about bringing a fresh perspective into teen life, just pretty much the same for all three groups. I gotta admit, series 5 wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, that's saved for debacle that is series 6.

All the videos featuring Freya Mavor are featured today. Really grew to like her (but not necessarily her character) over the series, so much so that I started watching The White Queen, well, I started, but gave up, but that's for when I cap it in the coming weeks.

The rest of the videos from series 5. Forgot to mention yesterday that I go these from the Bluray, the only series that seem to have made Bluray and bizarrely only in Australia. Even more bizarre is that it's a SBS show that's on Bluray, I don't think that's happened before and it definitely hasn't happened since. One of the mysteries of the cosmos...

Final series from the classes with a seventh series following some characters from previous series. Really didn't like this series at all, not in the least because most of the character did things that were either never believable (popular girl hooking up with the masturbating stoner) or without consequence (what the fuck was up with the trashing of a friend's house?) or a character completely changes their identity to be just one of the numbers (Franky). Mind you, when they killed off Grace in the first episode, the rest of the series could've gone and fucked itself for all I cared. The heart of the series was gone. The rest is just the same as the other series.

As I said yesterday, the most disappointing aspect of this series was how one of the few characters that was a little different became just one of the interchangable morons. Completely disappointing but sadly typical of Skins, always taking the easy way out.
