Australian classics for 25 August...

Another couple of Australian classics including a rather obscure one.

Death in Brunswick is a early 90s comedy about a 30-something man (Sam Neill) who starts a new job as a cook at a shady club (the old Bombay Rock for those who remember that, I'm too young, but I've heard stories...) and meets a 19 year-old waitress (a clearly older than nineteen Zoe Carides) and they fall in love against her family wishes. Then everything goes wrong for the man when he accidentally kills the other cook and his friends take revenge on the club by bombing it, not long after being fired and out the front of the place at the time. Pretty good comedy that uses Brunswick circa 1990 extremely well and has some very funny moments including the 'Piss off, it's school holidays' scene and of course, the farting corpse. I wish they made Australian films more like this today...

The Dark Room is an extremely obscure early 80s thriller about a fey arts student whose father accuses him of being gay (ah, gay paranoia, those we're the days) but we know better as he is stalking a wannabe actress (Anna Maria Monticelli) to the point that he ends up getting a job at the same place as she is working. But, the reason he is stalking her is even more disturbing as it turns out she is having an affair with his father. He befriends her, including shooting her actress portrait photos and eventually attempting to bed her. But, he is obsessed with his father's affair and it will be his undoing. A film that seems to try for more, but is hindered by a by-the numbers plot. Also, the film briefly features Baz Luhrmann when he was an actor, before he became a big time director.

Australian classics for 15 August...

Haven't done an old Australian film for a while, so here we go. And I have a few more lined up over the coming week.

All Men Are Liars is a slight, long forgotten mid-90s cross-dressing comedy about a teenage boy whose mother has left home after his dad sells her piano. At the same time, an all girl rock band from the city is in town for a few gigs and kicks out it's guitar player after she has an affair with the lead singer's (Toni Pearen) boyfriend. They advertise for a guitar player, something the teenage boy is, but it's a girls only band, so with the encouragement of his younger brother, he dresses up in his mother's clothes and auditions, getting the gig. Oh, and the teenage boy likes the lead singer, but she kinda likes his dad, an Elvis obsessed rocker, until she gets closer to the teenage boy dressed as a girl and she falls for her/him. And you know the rest. Everything about this film is just so cute that the film is hard to hate and while the film isn't anything new or even that good, it's a charmer.

And Toni Pearen circa early to mid 90s (the E Street days, bubblegum pop) was impossibly cute in the extreme. The scene where she has a swim in her underwear and then walks around sopping wet is just something else.

Update for 11 August...

Quickie today from a low budget Australian horror film.

Road Train aka Road Kill (which is also the name given to that Leelee Sobieski - Paul Walker truck stalking film) is about w guys and 2 girls going cross-country who are rammed by a road train and then forced off the road. One man has a broken arm the rest have just scratches, but they are stuck in the desert except the road train has stopped a short distance up the road, abandoned. So they take it, but the truck seems to take control over them or some nonsense. Oh and the truck is fuelled by blood, everyone turns on each other and the road train continues being a killing machine. Oh, it's such nonsense, but not unwatchable and I can watch Sophie Lowe all day, whatever...

Oh and it's always great when an Australian film is released overseas before it gets released here... Both in the US and UK over the next month.

Update for 10 August...

After the success of the Spanish/Mexican/Argentine updates, it's time to head back to the rest of the world.

Cherrybomb is an Irish film about two friends whose friendship is about to be tested by the daughter of the gym owner, who both boys are desperate to get with. But, she's into bad boys and to get with her, they must top one another in performing criminal acts. Of course, this is going to end in tragedy. Not much to the plot and not much to write home about either.

Wish Kimberley had given us a better look too. Still nice though.
