Update for 27 December...

Today it's over to the highest grossing Australian film for the year.

Tomorrow, When the War Began is an action film based on a highly successful series of books about a group of teenagers, led by Ellie (Caitlin Stasey), from the town of Wirrawee who go on a camping trip to a secluded spot nicknamed Hell for a few days. Overhead, they see fighter plan flying over but think nothing of it, until they return to town and find their homes deserted, in fact, the whole town. It seems the town has been invaded and have everyone has been herded into the showgrounds. After getting a closer look, they have their first encounter with the enemy which results in Ellie blowing up a ride-on lawnmower, killing the troops that are after them. After having further scrapes with the enemy, one of the group is shot and has to be rescued. After been rescued, the group decide that they must make a move against the enemy and they decide that the best way to hurt them is to blow up the bridge that the enemy is using to bring in supploes and reinforcements. Simply explained, it is like an Australian Red Dawn, which has pretty decent action sequences, but is bogged down drastically by everything in between. All the characters are pure caricature and of course they couple off except the good little religious girl. The acting is pure soap, no one can handle anything dramatic and that's a problem when it's all drama. Eh, what are you gonna do? At least it's an Australian film people actually want to see.

And after teasing us in the trailer, the Phoebe Tonkin bikini scene is a total bust, exactly what was in the trailer. Bah... There's always H20: Just Add Water.

Merry Fucking Christmas...

Well a nice big update from the one film on the eve of Christmas, a comprehensive look from the Spanish film (but for the most part in English) Habitación en Roma (Room in Rome).

Habitación en Roma is about two women who meet one night in Rome. They are Spanish Alba (Elena Anaya) and Russian Natasha (Natasha Yarovenko). They return to Alba's room and from there the night develops. Alba, a lesbian has an interest in bedding Natasha, but Natasha is reluctant because she is not a lesbian, but is attracted to Alba. Over the course of the night, the get to know each other personally, spiritually and sexually, gradually discovering more about each other in between passionate sessions of lovemaking. Shouldn't really spoil it anymore than that as this is film that needs to be experienced and a thorough description wouldn't even get to the heart of it anyway. I'm a big fan of the direction Julio Medem's work, so whether or not this film had sexy scenes or not was moot, I was always gonna get the Bluray of the film. Medem has made some of the sexiest films ever starting with La Ardilla Roja (The Red Squirrel) through Tierra and Caótica Ana to the ultimate in sexiness, Lucía y el Sexo (Sex and Lucia) and his best Lovers of the Arctic Circle. And this film ranks right up there in the sexiness, as you will see, I have just over 50 minutes of videos (half the film), 675 HD caps and 36 collages. Well worth a look, even if it's just for the copious amounts of sex/nudity.

As this series features a massive 3GB of videos, there's every chance this site will go down with bandwidth problems, so there are alternate links which can be found either below, at the Yahoo! Group or through the Twitter account. Hopefully the site won't go down...

Update for 20 December...

Still on theme.

Hollywood and Wine is a comedy about a struggling Australian actress in Hollywood, Diane Blaine (Nikki Whelan) who is down to the final two for the perfect role, but there are two barriers to her getting the role, her terrible audition and Jamie Stephens (also Nikki Whelan) who looks exactly like the actress and just happens to be a trainwreck currently in rehab (ahem!). While she waits for the dream role, she works at a restaurant with her long term boyfriend (Chris Kattan), who finds himself in a quandary when he borrows $25000 from a mobster (Chazz Palminteri) who tells him to let it ride at his casino and of course loses it all in a fixed blackjack game. He can't pay the debt, so in a desperate plea, he lucks into one last chance, it seems the mobster likes Jamie Stephens and thinks that his girlfriend is her and the mobster wants a date or he dies. Oh, it's a broad comedy with all sorts of wackiness in an attempt to make anything funny, some of which is, but some of the film is so ridiculous that it turns out to be more miss than hit. Plenty of cameos, a Spade and Farley reunion (well, his brother) and a Pamela Anderson cameo that looks as though she can't to get out of the place with her money quick enough.

And yes, Nikki Whelan (and her cleavage) is the female lead in this film. Hard to believe, but she is. Seems to be doing alright in Hollywood, shit, she was in Halloween 2. And the next Farrelly brothers film.

Update for 19 December...

Well, while sorta technically keeping with the current theme of Australian actresses in international films, today it's an Australian film made in India.

The Waiting City is a drama about a couple who are going to Kolkata, India to pick up a child for adoption. The process is painfully slow, so in the meantime, the couple, harried lawyer Fiona (Radha Mitchell) and wandering musician Ben (Joel Edgerton) find ways to pass the time in between appointments with the adoption agency. Ben meets a musician acquaintance (Isabel Lucas) and spends time with her and her friends while Fiona tries to keep up-to-date at her job. The couple also follow their ever-faithful concierge back to his homeland for some time away from Kolkata and to visit the orphanage their child was once stationed. But, as the wait increases, so does the strain on their relationship. Interesting film that sorta travels in the same areas as Lost in Translation in narrative structure. It has a quite devastating final act that puts things in perspective and I gotta admit, the film is a lot better than I expected it to be and well worth a look if you want something a little more emotional and spiritual.

Update for 16 December...

With the Australian Classics over it's time to move on... to a new series with an Australian actress.

Devil is a deliberately tricky thriller with some M. Night Shyamalan involvement about a group of people who are stuck in an elevator. While they are waiting to get moving again, strange things begin to happen and the token religious nut thinks it's the devil's doing. Then people start dying. The maintainance guy goes first, then people in the elevator begin to drop off when the lights go out. A detective desperately tries to unravel who's the killer and why. Hmmm, I'd love to say that this was something profound in it's religious overtones, but setting it amongst a standard 'ten little Indians' style plot kinda cancels that out. Devil is an OK time filler and nothing more. And it's always good to see Bojana Novakovic...

Australian Classics continues...

Last of the Australian Classics for now. I have a few more sitting around, but that can wait a little bit.

The Hard Word is 2002 crime thriller about three brothers (Guy Pearce, Joel Edgerton, Damien Richardson), the Twentymen brothers, who are locked up in Long Bay Prison together for robbery who are used by various lowlifes to perform robberies in return for a bit of money and certain prison privileges. When a bunch of corrupt cops have a proposition for them, a multi-million dollar robbery in Melbourne, they accept but hatch their own plan to stay out of jail. But, things go wrong from the beginning. It turns out they are robbing bookies on Melbourne Cup Day, the biggest betting day of the year. Also the bent cops have sent along two nasty pieces of work to help out, with the intention of offing the Twentymen brothers afterwards. Then there's the older brother's girl (Rachel Griffiths) and her new lover, a shonky lawyer who want their share of the robbery. Pretty well made film with solid performances from a pretty decent cast, an interesting vibe (including butcher's talk) which make the film an enjoyable watch.

The Actress is a 2005 Perth-based ultra low budget drama about three housemates, a supermarket worker, an office worker and a lesbian, who are looking for a fourth housemate and find one in Emma, an actress who immediately makes her presence felt. Emma seduces the the supermarket worker and they become a couple, then she seduces the lesbian and (you can guess the next bit) she seduces the office worker. She uses her wiles to disguise the fact that all she does all day is smoke pot and watch TV. Of course, something's gotta give and the supermarket worker starts to take it out on the other two, but more pointedly, the office worker who has become a bum too now that he got sacked for masturbating in the office. Not content with watching the house descend into madness, Emma takes it further culminating in a party where all hell breaks loose. Decent little unknown gem with an excellent performance from Caitlin Higgins (who doesn't seem to have done any other film acting, shame) who plays the trouble making minx with a hint of aloofness which makes the character even more devastating (and cheeky).

As I said yesterday, I have a few more I could do (including films like Patrick, some Paul Cox arty snorefests, some reduxes and just picked up the Bad Boy Bubby bluray), but it's time to move on for now. I'll do them next month if I have the time.

Let's burn these Classics off.

Hunting is a 1991 thriller about a secretary Michelle (Kerry Armstrong), who meets one of her boss' clients, a popular entrepreneur Michael Bergman (John Savage) and both are instantly smitten. But, Michelle is stuck in a lousy marriage with a husband who is having a run of bad luck. Intrigued by Bergman, she accepts an invitation to one of his parties (one of those ludicrous late 80s, early 90s movie parties where people do wacky things like be fully clothed in a swimming pool...) and the affair begins. Her husband cottons on to this and tries to get at Bergman, but Bergman gets his goons to fake his suicide, leaving Michelle all for himself. And bizarrely enough, it turns out that underneath all that philanthropy, Bergman is just an egotistical arsehole who wants everything. Ah, Boulevard Films, an attempt to make an Australian film studio that had big plans, but not much of anything else. I'm surprised that Hunting is the only film from Boulevard that has a DVD release as it's such an anonymous film (not even Heaven Tonight or Boulevard of Broken Dreams? Sure, most of their later films aren't even completed...) . Nothing special to it and pretty forgettable but has Kerry Armstrong's best nudity on film, even if it could be debated that some of the nudity is from a double.

I'll finish off Australian Classics tomorrow with two films from the last decade. After that I'll have some sexy stuff from some Aussie girls from overseas films.

Fran is an obscure 1985 drama (I'm suprised it made DVD. Not high quality though) about a mother of 3, Fran (Noni Hazlehurst) loves her children, but she is well, not a very good mother. Her absent husband comes home one night and finds that she has snuck out to a bar and left the kids at home alone. After hitting her, he leaves her for good. Unperturbed, Fran continues to go out, fobbing her kids off on her impotent friend as she finds a new beau Jeff, a bartender and hooks up for a few days. After spending some time with Jeff, their relationship develops, but the two are looking for a break from the kids, so they fob them off on Fran's sister and go on a getaway for a few days. Four weeks later, Fran is told that her kids are in the care of the government. Distraught, she desperately tries to get them back. Not an easy film as the lead character is a tough sell and Noni plays her quite well but depending on what you'd think of Fran will decide on whether or not you will like this film. By the way, I was sympathetic to Fran to a point but from the holiday on I lost complete patience with her.

Ah, The Man From Hong Kong, I can't believe I haven't seen it 'til now, possibly the most awesome Australian film ever. Released in 1975 and directed by the great Brian Trenchard-Smith (his first feature film), it's about a Hong Kong police man, Inspector Fang (Jimmy Wang Yu of so many kung fu classics) who comes to Australian to pick up a prisoner (played by the great Sammo Hung), but when the crim is assassinated, Fang launches a one man campaign to bring down who was responsible. And it ends with Jack Wilton (George Lazenby), a notorious drug baron/entrepreneur and martial arts expert. With the help of two local cops, well when they can catch up, Fang's gonna take down Wilton. Awesome old-school actioner that's a bit cheesy, but with such great action sequences that you'd wish you saw in modern films instead of the fast editing, camera shaking, can't see a thing style that pervades today. I wish more Australian films were this fun, it's not like you need a massive budget to do so either.

I haven't gone back far enough yet in the Australian Classics, so today, let's go as far back as 1971.

Stork is a comedy about well, Stork (Bruce Spence, and you should be able to work out why he's nicknamed Stork) who is an engineer who gets sacked from his job when he decides he's had enough and start causing 'trouble' at work. Homeless and jobless, he moves in with his mate Westy, who lives with two other blokes who are both going out with the woman living in the house, Anna (Jacki Weaver, quite the minx back in the day). Stork goes about living life how he wants to, but as a awkward, politically incorrect, liberal hypochondriac social outcast, he has an amazing ability to either stuff up or piss people off. We watch as he tries to bag a job and a girl. Man, 1971 was a completely different time and this film feels like ancient history. Even the ribald sex comedies of today would blush at this film, not because of the amount of sex in it, but how politically incorrect it is. And this is most obvious as Stork only ever calls Anna 'mole' (it's not hard to work out why) and man does everyone stare at Anna (it's not hard to work out why). Stork is actually a pretty fun film, sure it's dated, but some of the jokes are still pretty funny, even disgustingly funny and there's nothing wrong with that. But, I've never seen anything as blatant as this, it was a real eye opener.

And Redux Friday too!

Snapshot is a 1979 thriller set in Melbourne about a hairdresser Angela (Sigrid Thornton), who is offered a modeling job by Madeleine (Chantal Contouri from Thirst, see below) which she takes, leaving her job at the hairdressers. This and staying out late causes her strict mother to throw Angela out of home, so she stays at a photographers place, which is a place where others also crash. The (topless) modeling gig begins what seems to be a neverending cycle of people that become obsessed with Angela including Madeleine, Madeleine's impotent husband and of course, her former boyfriend who stalks her in an ice cream van. So, who is the one trying to kill her? Good luck with that one cos it's probably all of them. Interesting idea with some absolutely weird touches that doesn't wholly succeed, but is not all bad. The stalking ice cream van is an absolutely absurd touch. Needed some happy siren to make it even creepier (and ridiculous). Mind you the creepiest part is probably the soundtrack by Sherbet. Sherbet, really?

Surprised this film got a re-release on DVD just recently as it had been out of print for years. But, Umbrella (the distributor) unusually dropped the ball on this nude DVD (it doesn't even have a menu), they have such a good reputation at restoring films with plenty of extras that this release just seemed lazy.

Here's something a little more recent, well, 14 years ago.

Hotel de Love is a romantic comedy about two brothers Rick and Steve (Aden Young and Simon Bossell) who are vying for the affections of a British girl Melissa (Saffron Burrows). Rick has her affection and on the last day she is in Australia, he takes her virginity. Ten years later, both brothers have moved on and have started a hotel (um, the title) which specialises in romantic endeavours. Wouldn't you know it, Melissa walks in with her fiance and both brothers lose their mind. Meanwhile, the brother's parents have come to the hotel to refresh their marriage and then their's the clairvoyant (Pippa Grandison) who both brothers have a crack at. A by-the-numbers romantic comedy where the ending is without doubt, but hey, how often do you get a romantic comedy that isn't by-the-numbers.

And that Raelee Hill nude scene (one of only two scenes she has in the film) has to be one the most famous nude scenes in Australian film history.

A new Australian Classic today.

Thirst is a 1979 vampire film about Kate (Chantal Contouri), apparently a descendant of Elizabeth Bathory (I think that's called a long bow...), who experiences vivid dreams that make her believe that she is a vampire. A dodgy group of psycharists suggests that she should spend some time at a retreat to help her with her recovery, but she soon finds out that the dodgy psycharists are the heads of a cult that are farming humans for their blood. Or are they? And is Kate being used? Hmmm... Actually, not a bad take on the done to death vampire genre with some interesting overseas stars (David Hemmings and Henry Silva) and contains that now famous scene of Henry Silva being hoisted to an incredible height, higher than he was told, just holding onto a pole. Those crazy 70s film makers putting the actors lives on the line.

Have a few Aussie classics to get through, starting today.

The Chain Reaction is an early 80s nuclear paranoia thriller (in Australia, really?) about a couple (Steve Bisley and Arna-Maria Winchester) who are going to their cabin for a weekend away and just happen to get involved in a nuclear conspiracy. This is because a worker at a nuclear waste facility has managed to become irradiated and has escaped the facility after an earthquake causes a leak and manages to get as far as the cabin. The boss of the nuclear waste facility is desperate to cover up, so that means everyone must die. But, they weren't banking on Steve Bisley and his hotted up ute. Bizarre relic from the nuclear paranoia era that's more action thriller than anything thoughtful with some decent car chases which are great to watch, but seem out of place. A nice smattering of nudity from both leads, but I'm puzzled as to what to make of it all.

Update for 4 December...

A quick one today.

City Island is a comedy about a family that lives on City Island which is an island in New York. This is a family that has plenty of secrets, starting with the father (Andy Garcia), a prison guard who wants to be an actor, taking acting classes and telling his wife (Julianna Margulies) he's playing poker because it's more palatable. The daughter (Dominik Garcia-Lorido), who's been kicked out of university because her scholarship has been revoked and is stripping to make money to get beack into college. The son, who has a fetish for fat girls and wants to become a feeder. This delicate environment is about to become unbalanced when the father brings home a criminal out on parole to look after, who just happens to be his son with another woman (but the crim doesn't know this). A pretty good comedy with a really good performance by Andy Garcia. It falters in the end because of convenience, but I still enjoyed the film.

Oh, and Dominik Garcia-Lorido is Andy Garcia's daughter.

Update for 1 December...

Step Up 3D is well, you know by now. Best friends Moose (from the 2nd film) and Camille (from the 1st film) have come to New York to study at NYU. Moose has given up dancing, well until he outdances a member of a local dance troupe who want some sort of violent retribution (between dancers, really?). Saved by Luke, who takes him to his place, which is above a dance club that he tentatively owns, he coerces Moose out of retirement to join his troupe. The leader of violent dance troupe is a rich kid who wants the club and the only way Luke can continue to own the place is if his dance troupe wins the championship. Meanwhile, Luke spies a girl, Natalie (Sharni Vinson) at the dance club, who he is keen on and it just so happens she needs a place to stay. So now that he has a potent troupe, can they win the championship and keep the club? Of course they can, what do you think this is? Oh, it's predictable as hell and could've easily been called Honey or Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, but nobody's watching this film for plot.

And it looks like former Home and Away starlet Sharni Vinson is making a fairly decent run in Hollywood, a lot better than others currently over there. Next up is Blue Crush 2: The Sequel No One Asked For.
