Australian Classics for 24 February...
A double update today because I was feeling adventurous...
Fair Game (officially the laziest title ever) is a mid-80s exploitation film set in rural South Australia and is about a woman (Cassandra Delaney) who runs a wildlife sanctuary who is harassed by a bunch of kangaroo hunters (who seem to be popular villains in Australian film). At first, it starts out with little games, but then it escalates to a harrowing car ride tied to a bizarre bumper bar and possibly more. She then gets her revenge on them, but not before the total destruction of her property and sanctuary. A real oddity from the 10BA Ozploitation era, but not a bad effort, surprisingly tense at times and Cassandra Delaney's characters aversion to clothes in a common theme throughout the film, including her magically appearing underpants in one scene. Here's a quick fact, Cassandra went on to marry John Denver, how 'bout that?
Bliss is an absurd black comedy from the mid 80s that looks to have influenced American Beauty and the similarities are quite obvious. Harry Joy dies for four minutes after a family dinner and after being revived, he starts to see his life very differently hoping to save his soul. He sees his wife having a brazen affair with her co-worker, his son is a drug dealer who lets his sister pay her debts by giving him blow jobs (um yeah...) and his company is polluting the Earth and with the help of an environmentally and spiritually aware prostitute named Honey Barbara, sets about changing that, even if it means the end of his company. Of course, his family thinks his gone mad, so they attempt to send him to an asylum, only for his loony co-worker to be taken instead. Eventually, he goes completely nuts, well according to his family who can't believe he's fallen for the hippie prostitute, admits himself to the asylum, where there are now two Harry Joys. Oh and it doesn't end there, there is plenty more absurd stuff to come including a marketing campaign involving the lighting of petrol, the lover who keeping blowing himself up, some Nazi Youth like action and then some. Quite simply one of the best Australian films ever made (and I don't say that lightly), a funny satire on the so-called happy family that has much more fun with it than American Beauty does. Shame the director had to wait 16 years before his second film, another beauty in Lantana.
The next Australian classic update will hopefully be something from a film that wasn't made in the 80s (or co-stars Garry Who).

Alright, it's time to go over some old series again and thanks to TV networks needing to fulfil their Australian production quota, we have a whole bunch of Australian film off the TV. Otherwise, do you think they would air. Most are hard to watch. I won't have any of the ABC's showings because they like to get the knife out and cut them up. Bastards...
Not much to add, except most of the films were originally 2.35 widescreen but aired in 1.85 widescreen and are slightly zoomed, except, bizarrely enough for Gone which isn't zoomed and shows more of the picture. Strange. Nothing seems to be cut though. Also, Macbeth should be here, but twice the film didn't air, so who knows if that film will ever air. Also Maya Stange has changed her name to Maya Elliot, probably got married or something... Hasn't done much since XX/XY so it's good to see her back acting though after randomly appearing in an episode of Burn Notice a couple of years ago and recently in an episode of Satisfaction. She also has the third lead in the upcoming telemovie Wicked Love, which looks all sorts of sleazy :) thanks to the major plot involving swingers. Ahhhh, everything's sleazy again thanks to Underbelly...

Australian classics for 16 February...
I tried to make some collages fo rthe weekend, I really did try, but, I ended up being sidetracked yet again. Anyway, I've got a nice crisp Australian classic for this week, sticking with the 80s, this time the hard to find 80s comedy Emoh Ruo.
Emoh Ruo (Our Home backwards) is a quaint relic from the 10BA era that I really doubt too many people have actually seen. Bizarrely rescued by Village Roadshow and given a surprisingly decent DVD treatment (can't say the same about the ordinary film transfer, yuck), this film focuses on a couple desperate to own their first home. Struggling for years to save up enough to buy a home and living in what seems like forever in a tiny caravan at a caravan park, the couple get a bit of luck when they apply for a house they saw advertised on the TV. After selling the husband's long treasured boat to get the deposit, they head off the end of suburbia in what seems like light years away from everyone else to their new home in a street that only has one other house in it. But, their new home is a complete disaster with all the shonky building practises thoroughly applied. Inbetween struggles to pay the mortgage and the marriage falling apart because of it, the house has one problem after another. The comedy has kind of dated, but the story still resonates perfectly today as it's still a monumental struggle to own a home. Not a bad film, but one that is clearly now out-of-time.
I'll see what I can do about getting those other collages done. In the meantime head over to JMTV and you'll find a whole heap of videos from the series Headland with Rachael Taylor and Yvonne Strahovski (as she was Yvonne Strzechowski) before they got some big roles in Hollywood.

Australian classics for 10 February...
I haven't been bothered to make collages few weeks, so it's coming out in dribs and drabs at the moment. I think doing all those videos (which I still haven't been bothered to release...) has made me a bit bored of it for the moment, same with the weather, which has been unbearably hot and pushes the computer to ridiculous temperatures. Hopefully, I'll get busy soon. In the meantime, I have another Australian classic, this time the 1982 drama Monkey Grip.
Monkey Grip is about woman who is recently divorced, has a 11 year old child and is aspiring to get into the music industry, but in the meantime is a part-time writer. She meets Javo, who she sort of knows and they start a relationship together. But, he's very flaky because he's on the horse (there's the requistite junkie in an Australian film...) and she doesn't know what to do with herself because she loves him, a lot. A film set in Melbourne, but mostly filmed in Sydney, it has it's similarities to the vastly inferior Dogs in Space and is a very disjointed drama, but it works, mainly thanks to some outstanding lead performances from Noni Hazlehurst and Colin Friels. Also features a rare foray into acting from The Divinyls lead singer Chrissie Amphlett, when the Divinyls were really good, which is a bonus.
I'll try to get some more stuff out for the weekend. I'll try...

Australian classics (apparently...)
Recently, I have been collecting quite a number of older Australian films, so it's about time that I watched them and maybe even cap them.
First up is the long forgotten, but recently rediscovered Dead End Drive-In. Set somewhere in the 1990s (the film was released in 1986) where society has self-distructed and is run extremely tightly be the haves, a man known as Crabs (insert a thousand jokes here) is taking his girl to the drive-in where he enters into the drive-in by paying the unemployed price. While having sex in the car, two of the wheels of the car are stolen and they are stuck there with a whole bunch of society's misfits. It turns out the police are involved. Crabs doesn't fit in with the weirdos inhabiting the drive-in and desperately wants to leave, but it seems nobody leaves as the drive-in is a dump for the riff-raff. While the premise is very much B-grade, there is much promise that isn't quite fulfilled. The film also tries for too much and a sub-plot involving the dumping of Asians at the drive-in is perhaps a bit crude (this would definitely not happen in these politically correct times). Maybe I'm stretching it with the classic label, but the film is much better than it's reputation and definitely one of cult director Brian Trenchard-Smith's (BTS) better films (and he's done some real stinkers).
I have many, many to come, so it should keep busy for a while.
