Australian Classics for 26 February...

I've put this on hold because other thing have got in the way (that Sea Patrol update is done and dusted thankfully), but it's time to head back into the archives yet again, this time with one of my favourite Australian films ever, Bad Boy Bubby. New to Bluray too.

Bad Boy Bubby is a 1993 well... genre busting story about Bubby (Nicholas Hope, who's absolutely perfect as Bubby), a 35 year old shut-in, abused by his mother and forced to live inside some sort of underground bunker as his mother has told him that the air outside is impossible to breathe. Forced into incestuous activities with his mother, things change when two events occur, his long lost father returns and Bubby discovers cling wrap. When things become unbearable for Bubby, he cling wraps his mother and father (after finding out about it's properties on his pet cat) and makes his way out into the real world for the first time, Adelaide to be exact (hmm... insert obvious Adelaide joke here. I won't. I'll feign decency). We see what Bubby discovers through imitation and meeting a whole array of people who will help to form the new Bubby. Along the way, he falls in love with a psychiatric nurse Angel, discovers he can understand people with cerebral palsy and joins a low rung band where he becomes a cult hero. Amazing film that's about a thousand things at once and while the film is very full on at times, it's a very uplifting film about the joy of life and experiencing new things with child like innocence.

I was going to do the entire post only using what Bubby repeats throughout the film, but it doesn't make a lot of sense and it would be completely and utterly profane. The word 'cunt' would be used a lot.

Anyway, I'll leave you with my favourite one, 'They're not Angel tits'. They're not tiny, they're perfect 36ers...

Update for 23 February...

Well, here it is, the most anticipated nude scene of the year so far (wasn't Anne Hathaway late December 2010?).

The Clinic is an Australian thriller about a couple Beth and Cameron (Legend of the Seeker's Tabrett Bethell and Spartacus: Blood and Sand's Andy Whitfield) who are travelling cross country to her parents place. Beth is heavily pregnant with their first child. While driving on an open road, from out of nowhere a small truck quickly approaches at their stationwagon and sideswipes them, forcing them off the road. Shaken, the couple head into the next town and to a motel for the night. Run by the sleaziest guy ever who immediately makes a comment about Beth's breasts (always a good opener) and then charges for 3 people including the unborn child (if Australian films have taught me one thing, that's never leave the city). Cameron begrudgingly accepts as the owner says the next motel is 200 kilometres away (faced with that option, if I could, I'd travel the 200km because bad shit always happen when that is said). They are then approached by the only other couple staying at the motel, who act weirdly then leave. They go to bed, but Cameron can't sleep and goes out looking for food, but when he comes back, Beth has disappeared and he calls the police only to be charged with assault of the owner.

Then Beth wakes up in a bathtub full of ice, sans unborn baby. She stumbles out of the bath towards the exit only to find it's heavily secured, to which she faints and wakes up and finds three other women (Freya Stafford, Clare Bowen and Sophie Lowe - how come we don't see their nude awakenings?) who have all had their unborn child removed. And it's about to get worse. Surprisingly good little thriller that has a lot up it's sleave and some great surprises which raises it above the average thriller. Yes, it ends as you imagine, but not without a few shocks. Highly recommended.

But, I am baffled as to why this film is set in the late 70s. It does make for some great looking old school vehicles though.

Oh, and in case you haven't realised, Tabrett Bethell is naked. And she spends 3/4 of the film in a sort of tracksuit (just for balance). Also, just had a look at the info for the directors next film and the words 'two skimpy waitresses' is mentioned in the synopsis. I wonder who will get cast for that film...

Update for 13 February...

Let's head into dangerous territory.

I Spit on Your Grave, a remake of the 1978 revenge thriller, is about Jennifer (Sarah Butler), a writer who has going to a backwoods cabin to write her next book. On her way there, she gets lost and asks for help at a gas station run by Johnny who tries to pick her up. In the process, Jennifer embarrasses him in front of his friends. Finally, she gets to the cabin. That's when the terror begins. Bored, as most backwoods rednecks seem to always be, they decide to go have a little fun with the writer. Jennifer escapes an initial attack and runs to the local sheriff, who takes her back to the cabin to get a statement. Except, he totally wants a piece of the action and Jennifer is then repeatedly raped and violated. But, just as the sheriff is about to kill her, she dives into the river and escapes. Thorough searches come up with nothing, but a month later Jennifer begins her revenge on those who wronged her. I haven't seen the original, so I can't comment on whether the remake is better or not, but this film is an OK revenge thriller, that's more than a little obsessed with elaborate revenge acts. But, there's nothing you haven't seen before and just goes to show that I'll never go out of the suburbs cos those country-fried rednecks sure like to hurt people.

Oh, and in case you haven't realised, there's a lengthy rape and degradation scene in the film... But you wouldn't be interested in that now, you're good honest people who'll write to their local member of government alerting them about this disgusting thing. Not have, say, the rape scene from The Last House of the Left be far and away the most downloaded video on this site. I have full confidence in you all...

Update for 9 February...

Let's have a Billy Zane double shot... I mean girls from movies that star Billy Zane.

Blue Seduction is a thriller about a one time music star Mikey Taylor (Billy Zane), who is mounting a comeback after falling prey to the usual trappings of fame. He hires a singer for a studio session and a girl named Matty (Estella Warren) arrives and blows Mikey and his crew away. And then all hell breaks loose and Mikey's gonna fall off the wagon bad. First, Matty seduces him, then she gets him back on the drinks and drugs and then Mikey begins to miss important event with his long suffering wife (Jane Wheeler). When he apparently hits bottom, Mikey desperately tries to get back in track, but one final twist is in store. This film is so silly that it's perfect for Billy Zane; dodgy wig, bizarre histronics and all. The film skirts the edge of silliness and farce quite well and it's final twist is pretty neat, so if you go in with lowered expectations, you'll probably have the most fun.

The Hessen Affair is a post WW2 set thriller about a group of soldiers taking over a castle in Germany. One day, the crown jewels are discovered and instead of doing the right thing, the colonel (Billy Zane) with the help of his female lieutenant (Lyne Renée) and other soldiers decide to hide the treasure and then get it back to the US and fence it. With a cunning plan to get the colonel and liuetenant back the US to facilitate the fencing of the treasure, the princess discovers the treasure missing and alerts the authorities. In the US, the colonel and the lieutenant begin to have trouble when their fence is murdered and the jewels are stolen. So, the colonel and the lieutenant decide to go their own way to con the man who stole the treasure. An OK little adventure thriller that diverting, but nothing special, just as most Billy Zane films seem to be.

Update for 6 February...

Another set from a DVD. They still make them do they?

The Reef is an Australian thriller about a group of people who go on a trip on a boat. All except the captain of the boat are either related or have history. After exploring underwater for a while, they find an island and settle down, until the tide begins to subside quickly and it's a race to get the boat out of the area. In the process, they hit a rock and the boat capsizes and they are left with the decision to stay with the sinking boat or make the quite lengthy swim to an island with the help of improvised floatation devices. Then a shark arrives and one by one they are attacked as they desperately search for land. From the director of the solid crocodile attack thriller Black Water, this film is pretty much the same but with a shark, but that's not to say that it's also pretty well done. Worth a look, particularly when it reaches Australian cinemas in March. Cough! (You know my feelings about how Australian genre films are treated in Australia... Black Water copped the same treatment)

Update for 1 February...

It's either a whole bunch of movies or a whole bunch of TV shows at the moment. Let's mix it up a bit with a movie.

All Good Things is a drama/thriller based on a true story about a couple, David and Katie Marks (Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst) in which David is accused of killing Katie. It all begins when David comes over to Katie's house to fix her sink and from there they fall in love. David is under the thumb of his very successful father and with the love of Katie, he finds a way out. After moving away and setting up a shop, everything is going fine except the store isn't making money and it comes a time when David must move back to New York and take up a job with his father. But, the job is incredibly shonky and it begins to take a toll on David and on his relationship with Katie. Oh, and David is mentally unstable. Then he hits Katie, kills a dog and possibly Katie. Then it gets weird. Interesting film that works better when focusing on the relationship between David and Katie than when it moves into the weird territory (even if it is a true story). Decent performances from Ryan and Kirsten also help.
