Update for 29 November...
Cut Snake is an Australian thriller set in 1974 where Pommie (Sullivan Stapleton) is let out of a Sydney jail and wants to catch up with his former cellmate Sparra, who is now in Melbourne. Sparra (Alex Russell) has moved on and has just proposed to his girlfriend Paula (Jessica de Gouw) and everything is looking up for the couple despite Paula not knowing anything about his past. Pommie tracks him down and wants to pick up from where they left off. Sparra and Paula with her friend take Pommie to a nightclub, where unnerved by a drag act that gets too close, Pommie decides to rob the club and makes a quick getaway. The next day, Sparra decides to buy a gun for protection as he can see himself getting dragged back into crime by Pommie. Pommie tells Paula that they spent time together in jail, something she doesn't know, but she is accepting of Sparra trying to make a new life. After a day trip to the beach, they come home to the house being ransacked, a warning that they know that Pommie robbed the nightclub. Pommie convinces Sparra to go back to the club and finish it and while there, they rob the club and Sparra beats two crooks to an inch of their life. Sparra has once again come under Pommie's spell, but he doesn't want to go back to jail and wants to be with Paula and with the cops on their tail, there's only one way to get rid of Pommie. Not a bad little low key thriller, basically a three hander with quality performances from all three leads particularly a surprisingly good Sullivan Stapleton (particularly compared to say Strike Back). The story goes to some unexpected areas even though it still follows the well worn crim trying to make a new life being drawn back in plot and this works well and gives the movie an extra layer of tension.

Update for 23 November...
A couple of 80s/90s inspired teen movies for today's update. Dope is a pretty good comedy about Malcolm and his two friends who are outsiders who accidentally become in possession of a backpack full of drugs after a raid at a nightclub and now they have to try and get rid of it and evade local gangsters who want the drugs back all while Malcolm is attempting to get into Harvard. Fairly funny and quite likeable and a great nude scene from Chanel Iman, what's not to love? Staten Island Summer is about a bunch of people working the summer as lifeguards at the local pool, with Danny about to leave everyone and go to college, leaving his best friend Frank behind. OK movie, a bit of the same old thing, to be honest I prefer the similar and much funnier The To Do List over this movie, but it's not a bad movie.

Redux Friday for 21 November...
Today's update is from the 2002 (no) sex comedy, 40 Days and 40 Nights, which I first capped in March 2004 (I could've sworn that I capped this movie way earlier than that). It's funny that this type of movie was pretty stock standard in the early 2000s, but now it's rare for these type of movies to even be seen in a cinema any more, hell, there aren't that many being made. Having a look at the movie now, man this movie has dated very quickly. Josh Harnett's character working in a web development company, wow, that dates this movie. Plus it's possibly the most sex-obsessed workplace ever, the workers seem to be on the edge at all times, I've never worked at a place like that. Or maybe I have and I just haven't realised it... Sexual harassment for everyone! Also, while clearly set in San Francisco, 40 Days and 40 Nights is full of Canadian actors, a sure fire sign this was probably made in Vancouver (it was with some outdoor shots in San Francisco). Amazing how often American west coast movies aren't actually made there. Shit, some of them are even made in Australia...
Pretty decent strike rate of actresses still getting plenty of work now although Monet Mazur seems to have dropped off the radar recently, which is disappointing.

Redux Friday for 20 November...
That time of the week where I go back and redo an old series. Today, I go pre-johnnymoronic.com to a series I first capped in June 2004 from the movie Love Don't Cost A Thing, a remake of Can't Buy Me Love, but really it could be any unpopular person gets in with popular person and becomes a better person only to be to their detriment story as they come out all the time. This movie is mostly obnoxious, more than the average high school movie and neither lead character is all that likeable. I am amused at the soon-to-be NBA star worried about his high school girlfriend plot. Yeah, right, as if that's a big deal to him. Then there's everyone turning on the unpopular kid when the popular girl admits to him paying her so that he can be popular, but nobody turns on her for taking the money? Come on! But she's so nice because she doesn't actually want to be one of them and has had to work hard everyday to be popular (she actually says this!). I told you it was obnoxious...
Another pre-johnnymoronic.com series tomorrow, even earlier than today's update.

Update for 18 November...
Finally something new on the movie side with today's update featuring a couple of new Australian movies.
Ruben Guthrie is a drama about ahem, Ruben Guthrie (Patrick Brammall), a party boy advertising creative who jumps off the roof into a pool and injures himself after his long term girlfriend Zoya (Abbey Lee Kershaw) takes some time out because she knows what happens next. Taken to an AA meeting by Zoya and his mother (Robyn Nevin), he starts the process of getting off alcohol, but everything in his life seems to involve drinking or taking drugs to have a good time. Zoya, an internationally renowned model, goes on her next photo shoot and decides that she's leaving him, but she will give him another chance if he can not have a one drink for a year. Ruben changes his AA meeting to something more his style where he meets Virginia (Harriet Dyer), who becomes his sponsor. They fall for one another and he asks her to move in when she's been evicted from her place. Meanwhile, Ruben Guthrie's fun-loving best friend Damian (Alex Dimitriades) asks to stay at his house too, which results in conflict because of his way. And he's not the only one with his parents especially his dying father (Jack Thompson) wanting the old Ruben Guthrie and his boss (Jeremy Sims) wanting the old Ruben Guthrie so he can get back his old magic. This is going to be a rough year for Ruben Guthrie, but if he survives without a drink, he'll get what he really wants back. Oh dear, when I saw the trailer I had a feeling I wasn't going to like this movie, but I tried and it's not all annoying, but Ruben Guthrie gives it one helluva go. Firstly, everybody and I mean everybody, calls Ruben Guthrie by his full name every single time including himself(!!!). Every character is massively obnoxious except for Virginia who is just overbearing and it's some movie when overbearing is the lesser of two evils. Ruben Guthrie is so obnoxious that I couldn't give a shit about his affliction, always thinking he's better than those trying to help, even when he should be feeling humility. This wouldn't be a problem if he just said 'fuck it' and went full bore into an alcohol and drug spiral which he threatens, but no, he wants to get better, well he really wants Zoya back, but getting better is a possible side effect. That's it, that's enough, no more...
The Heckler is a body switch comedy where up-and-coming comedian Steve (Simon Mallory) meets his biggest fan, Mike (C.J. Fortuna), who wants to be a comedian, so Steve tells him to come to his class to work on his act. But, Mike is terrible, just taking jokes off the Internet and telling old jokes and Steve gives him some blunt advice to try something else. Later, after Mike heckles Steve at his next gig and Steve hounds him out of the place, they meet in the toilets and have a tussle that ends with Mike accidentally drowning in a toilet. Steve moves on, but he starts to see visions of Mike and it's affecting his act. His agent tells him to go see Seinfeld, the psychiatrist, who gives him a relaxation CD which Steve listens to and he wakes up the next morning outside of his body with the only person knowing his existence being Mike now appearing as Steve. Mike, who's a complete loser, now takes over Steve's life, trying to get with his girlfriend Bree (Kate Jenkinson), withdrawing all his money and ruining his credit, causing havoc with Steve's ex Emma (Emily Taheny) and his son and ruining his entire act just by being completely crap at it. Steve is watching his life go to ruin and all he can do is watch as fellow comedian admit how much they hate him and Bree's only with him because he could become famous. Steve manages to get his agent to get him a spot on a comedian competition and Steve uses it to get Mike to become a better comedian. He also get Mike to get in better with his son and ex as he tries to get Mike to listen to the meditation CD so he can become himself again, but maybe this is the wake up call he's needed or he could be stuck forever outside of his body. Pretty standard body switch comedy that's actually pretty funny which is a nice surprise. While it has its slumps, The Heckler gets by with a couple of good leads in Mallory and Fortuna who work well together and a generally funny comedy is rare and there's some good laughs in The Heckler. Well worth a look.
Also, sticking with Australian movies for the moment, I saw a couple of new release Australian comedies currently in cinemas in the past few days, Now Add Honey and Alex & Eve. Now Add Honey is from partners Wayne Hope and Robyn Butler making their first movie after making the TV sitcoms The Librarians and Upper Middle Bogan, both OK comedies. Butler stars as Caroline, a woman whose life is thrown into chaos when her Hollywood living sister Beth (Portia de Rossi) comes home with her children's entertainer daughter (think Bindi Irwin), Honey (Lucy Fry) and Beth gets arrested for having a shitload of prescription painkillers so Caroline and her family have to look after Honey, who doesn't live like a normal teen girl. Oh and Beth is trying to get 1 million views on YouTube in 24 hours for Honey and is doing so by revamping her image as a sexed-up singing sensation which Honey is only going with because her mother thinks it's the next step in her career. Much chaos ensues. Sadly, Now Add Honey isn't all that funny and too much is going on and the tone shifts dramatically at times and the movie just doesn't work as whole. The final act actually revolves around stopping Honey doing a nude photo shoot (Booooo! Don't stop it!), but there is precious little nudity in Now Add Honey. A brief over the shoulder side-boob shot from Robyn Butler followed by some strategic nudity in and out of a shower and finally her breast pops out of her dress in a photo but that's probably fake. Butler also has a scene in her underwear along with Lucy Durack who is also in her underwear in a bizarre scene where they attempt to distract a sleazy photographer. Lucy Fry has at least two bikini scenes that I remember plus numerous showings of her sexy music video where she's in a bra and shorts. Plus other sexy outfits throughout, but no nudity during the nude photo shoot (boo!). Her Lightning Point cast mate Philippa Coulthard plays Butler's daughter and has a brief underwear scene and also in a photo when the sleazy paparazzi photographer attempts to bribe Caroline. And finally Ash Ricardo is in a bikini and Faustina Agolley in a one piece bathing suit as they both play assistant to Honey who are hanging out at a hotel pool. Probably forgot something, I dunno. Now Add Honey bombed horrendously at the box office and no surprise considering I was the only person in my viewing.
Alex & Eve is basically an Australian My Big Fat Greek Wedding with a small cultural difference. Alex (Richard Brancatisano), a teacher of Greek heritage has no luck with the ladies and his parents are desperate for him to marry a nice Greek girl. One night out with his Irish friend (yep, it's real multicultural, not that there's anything wrong with that...), he meet Eve (Andrea Demetriades), a Muslim lawyer and after an initial hiccup, hit it off, but are reluctant to take it further because of their families. But, they finally decide to go out and they fall in love and then it comes time to tell their respective families. Oh dear, chaos ensues. Watchable, but mostly predictable romantic comedy with some laughs mainly between Alex and his students who are a little too interested in his love life. Almost pulls off an unpredictable ending before flaking it, but then I (and everyone else) wouldn't expect anything else. A couple of underwear scenes from Andrea Demetriades plus a strategic nude sex scene in a car followed by getting dressed and also show her bare back while getting a massage before the wedding. And Millie Samuels, who plays Eve's best friend, has an underwear scene too, which gets the thumbs up from me as I quite like Millie.

Australian Classics for 9 November...
Three movies from the late 70s, early 80s today.
Running On Empty is a 1982 car action thriller made in Western Australia where Mike (Terry Serio) is an aspiring drag racer who wants in with the scene. He strikes up a friendship with model Julie (Deborah Conway), who's in with the scene, much to the dislike of self-proclaimed head of the scene Fox (Richard Moir) who forces Mike to race to be a part of the scene, which he promptly fails. But, Julie likes Mike and along with his mechanic mate Tony (Vangelis Mourikis), they head out to the country to make easy money scamming rubes with a fast car and hope to make enough money to make changes to the car so that Mike can beat Fox. Along the way they meet a blind, 50s obsessed mechanic called Rebel (Max Cullen) who along with his wife helps them when their car is destroyed by a bunch of local hoons not liking being beaten in a race and eventually lends them his own pride and joy to beat Fox. Wow, this movie is very much of it's time and has a seriously strange vibe about it, almost dystopic and very much about the hopelessness of being young with a truly baffling ending that does nothing to dispel that dystopic vibe. Women are practically non-entities in this movie, even the only female character of note, Julie, gets treated like crap, one scene involving her and Mike where he gives her a black eye is absolutely off, not to forget an earlier attempt at raping Julie by Fox's gang. And Mike is such a prick, it's hard to barrack for him when so ruthlessly wants to be in this social scene. There's attempts a comic relief from, who else but two SS-like cops, one played by noted comic Grahame Bond, but doesn't work at all. A very strange movie, something for the revheads, but very much of its time and a surprisingly slow movie even at only 80 minutes. Some good nudity from Deborah Conway though, better known for her music than as an actress, but is strangely in the Peter Greenaway movie, Prospero's Books as possibly the only person not naked in that movie...
Alison's Birthday is a 1979 occult thriller where Alison (Joanne Samuel from Mad Max) is warned during a séance that on her 19th birthday, she will be used in an occult ritual against her will. Now, four days before her 19th birthday, she receives a call from her aunt (Bunney Brooke) that she would like Alison to join her and her uncle (John Bluthal) for birthday celebrations. She reluctantly agrees mainly because she is told her uncle is unwell. Alison brings along her radio announcer boyfriend Peter (Lou Brown), but the vibe is off from the moment Alison gets there. She collapses after discovering a stone monument in the backyard and is freaked out by an 104 year old woman who is introduced to her as her grandmother. Then, the uncle begins to ward off Peter, but Peter is concerned for Alison, even moreso when she faints again and a very suspicious doctor becomes involved. It turns out that the uncle and aunt are not really Alison's relatives and kidnapped her from birth as they are into the occult and are planning on using Alison to transport their aging Goddess Merna to the youthful body of Alison's. Peter attempts to stop this from happening, but is he already too late. Interesting occult thriller that's influenced by The Wicker Man, that isn't without it creepy moments, particularly when Peter becomes desperate. It doesn't all work, the uncle and aunty are a little too genial to be considered the threat they actually are, maybe better casting might have made them more disturbing as both Brooke and Bluthal are much loved 'nice' actors and don't bring much of a dark side that would be necessary for the things they have done. I didn't mind Alison's Birthday, but it still feels very minor despite a surprisingly good second half and ending.
Solo is a 1977 romantic drama that filmed entirely in New Zealand (although has Australian backing and lead actors) where drifter Judy (Lisa Peers, who also has a small role in Alison's Birthday) first meets Paul (Vincent Gil) when he puts out a campfire she has illegally lit in the forest. He decides not the charge her and they meet again when Judy is hitchhiking and Paul picks her up while he's on his way home from picking up his odd son Billy (Perry Armstrong) from school. Turns out Paul flies planes around the forest making sure things like what happened when they first met don't happen. He takes her up in a plane that he lets his son fly. Paul is obsessed with planes and after letting Judy sleep over at his house, he introduces her to a Tiger Moth that he has finished building and is about to fly for the first time. He offers a ride to Judy, she is reluctant, but after initial declining she joins them and they go for a flight until they run out of fuel. They are picked up by a local man and his wife who are happy for the company and turn out to be quite eccentric. Billy decides to take the Tiger Moth for a spin after they get fuel and crashes it, leaving them stranded at the eccentric couple's place. Judy and Paul fall in love and everything seems fine, but once they finally get back to Paul's place, Judy is reluctant to continue their relationship much to the disappointment of Paul who hasn't been with a woman since his wife's death. Judy leaves, but Paul has left an indelible impression on her that might leave hope for the future. Again, a movie very much of its time, this quaint romantic drama is not without its charm particularly in regards to plane flight. There's a great opening scene that feels more like another dystopic movie is starting up, but goes gently after this. But that son of Paul's, Billy, is one very odd kid who going to get himself into a bit of trouble in the future. He's introduced by one of the strangest scenes I've ever seen in a PG movie, joyfully perving on little girls changing. It's one of those scenes where you can't believe what you just saw and in today's environment would be hounded out of the movie, but is meant to be innocuous in Solo. He's boasts of his pornography collection at another point then openly reads a Playboy magazine on a train, which turns out to be a fairly funny scene strangely enough. That's not to mention him constantly getting into scrapes. Oh for a woman's touch! A gentle little doomed romance that is more of its time, but not bad nonetheless.
The DVD for Running On Empty is from over a decade ago is not the best quality, very low bit rate, but at least has the proper aspect ratio. It needs Umbrella to have a go at it because it distributors Magna Pacific are well known for making some dicey DVDs. Both Alison's Birthday and Solo came from an Umbrella double pack and are presented to suggest that both movies were actually telemovies and Channel 7's involvement in both seems to confirm this. Joanne Samuel seems to work regularly up until the late 80s, but has barely had a role since although she recently turned up in that Peter Allen mini-series which was a rare sight. Lisa Peers seems to still work semi-regularly with an ongoing role recently in A Place To Call Home. She also worth a listen in the commentary to the 70s curio Journey Among Women which is one out there movie about women convicts rebelling and spending lots of time naked, hell it gets a rare R rating for nudity alone, usually only given to softcore sex movies in regards to nudity. Must get around to capping that one day, I watched it a few years back and it got lost in the pile.
