Update for 30 May...

If it's not rituals, it's lifeguards at the moment.

The To Do List is a sex comedy where valedictorian Brandy (Aubrey Plaza) has a sudden realisation that she is missing out on sex. She also discovers boys, well one in particular, Rusty Waters (Scott Porter), the atypical sensitive type with a guitar, who, of course, is miles out of her league. So, she does what she always does, make a list, but this list contains numerous sex acts that she must complete by the end of summer. Brandy also takes a summer job as a lifeguard where she is the only girl amongst a group of boys and her boss Willy (Bill Hader) who will humiliate her, when she's not doing a damn fine job humiliating herself. But, word gets out that Brandy has a list of sex acts she would like to do and the boys begin to take an interest including Rusty. This pisses off Cameron (Johnny Simmons), her lab partner who has a crush on her, but she blind to this. Brandy is a determined girl and by the end of summer, she will lose her virginity, but does that really matter? Not a bad little bawdy comedy choc-full of Saturday Night Live alumni, with some good support from the likes of Bill Hader and Clark Gregg as Brandy's right-wing judge father. While Aubrey's probably too old to play an 18 year-old, she not bad in a rare lead role and considering a fair portion of the comedy in the movie is at the expense of her character, she comes out of it quite well. Hmm, maybe not the poo scene...

Update for 28 May...

Let's continue on with the rituals.

The Sculptor's Ritual is a drama filmed in 2008, now finally released about sculptor Paul (Paul David-Goddard) who has hit a rough patch with his wife Renee (Melanie Vallejo), mainly related to her recent miscarriage and it's starting to affect his work. After another fight, he finds himself seeking out someone from his past, Nat (Georgina Andrews), but she rejects him. A few weeks later, Paul and Renee go to an artist's retreat to hopefully get his mojo running again, but the place also seems to be a pick-up joint for cheap sex and surprise, surprise, Paul finds Nat right in the middle of it and very much on the edge of sanity. This brings him back to 4 years or so earlier when Paul meets Gordon (Gordon Honeycombe), a man who can make all his dreams come true by performing rituals involving group sex. This is where Paul meets Nat, a woman who can play the perfect victim and very much integral to the rituals. Gordon warns the two from fraternising, but the temptation is overwhelming and they begin a very sexual affair. When Gordon finds out, he expels them from the group. Then Paul meets Renee, who works for an art gallery interested in his art and he falls for her instantly, but Nat still lingers and he decides to perform one last ritual to get what he really wants. Something that may be damaging to his marriage now. But something that may also have an unintended benefit. Interesting idea for a film, even if the idea of rituals getting you everything you want being pretty laughable. The movie works despite of this mainly due to the plot which seems to keep flowing well all through the movie. But the movie works better when the focus is on the artist's struggle and the relationships that Paul has. Not a wholly successful movie, but one that scores more than it misses.

Update for 27 May...

DVDs, being a while since I've capped one of those, I'd almost forgot how...

Ritual - Una Storia Psicomagica (A Psychomagic Story) is an Italian drama about Lia (Désirée Giorgetti), who falls head over for Viktor (Ivan Franek). Viktor turns out to be a brutal influence on the fragile Lia, but when she gets pregnant, Viktor turns out to be much worse, forcing her into an abortion (performed by himself!). This tips Lia over the edge and she makes an attempt on her life. Deciding that the best way to recover it to live with her aunt Agata (Anna Bonasso), where all her happiest memories are, she is going well until Viktor arrives and her want for a baby increases. And with the help of Agata, a noted local witch, she can get her wish. But, Viktor... For a movie that seems to want to be a mind trip of some sort, it's surprisingly straight forward for the most part. And that's part of the problem. I kept expecting more from it, but it really doesn't eventuate. And Lia is so susceptible to everything that it's hard to feel much sympathy for her. I dunno, I kept expecting some giallo type chiller and ended up watching something far less thrilling. Plenty of nudity from Désirée Giorgetti though.

Update for 26 May...

Bullet is a thriller following Frank 'Bullet' Marasco (Danny Trejo), a play it by his own rules cop who is looking to take down kingpin Carlito Kane's (Jonathan Banks) organisation piece by piece. When Carlito's son is about to be executed for murdering four cops, Carlito makes a play to get him out. First, he kidnaps the governor's (John Savage, winner of the least likely to look like a governor prize) daughter to get him to overturn the execution. But, more is needed. So, Carlito kidnaps Bullet's grandson and will only release him if he signs a confession that he killed the cops and then 'kills himself'. Bullet's having none of that and he goes about finding his grandson leaving a trail of bodies behind him. A by-the-numbers B-thriller with the added spice of Danny Trejo basically playing Machete, replete with his catchphrases and the sight of a nearly 70 year-old man trying to sprint (which is surely something he could get written out of a movie). Never boring, but nothing to get excited about. And interesting to see German actress Julia Dietze (who was great in Iron Sky) turn up in an utterly thankless role.

Update for 21 May...

The Lifeguard is a drama about Leigh (Kristen Bell), a newspaper reporter, who at almost 30 is having a crisis and decides to move from New York back to her home town in Connecticut to take some time out. She moves back in with her parents and starts a job as a lifeguard at the local pool. She catches up with her old friends Todd (Martin Starr), a gallery owner and Mel (Mamie Gummer) now a vice principal at the high school. And Leigh meets Little Jason (David Lambert), son of the pool maintenance man who lives at the pool and after a while things start to develop between the two which is fine except for one thing. Little Jason is only sixteen and still at school. Leigh's arrival causes havoc in the lives of those around her to the point where it will end in tragedy. And maybe she will find what she's looking for. OK little drama, all the better with Kristen out front guiding it, in her bathing suit... It heads into some dangerous areas, but handles them OK. Well, I did get a laugh out of the kid's father blasé reaction to the affair, much to the disbelief of Mel who seemed more concerned about her involvement in the whole sordid ordeal.

Also, there's a brief moment during the side-boob scene below where there's a hint of nipple from Kristen. It's very brief, but definitely a looks like a nipple.

Update for 19 May...

Concussion is a drama about Abby (Robin Weigert), a bored lesbian housewife with Kate (Julie Fain Lawrence) who decides to take account of her life after being injured by her son. She decides to finally convert an apartment in the city with the help of Justin (Johnathan Tchaikovsky) and they get to talking about Abby's non-existent sex life. He suggests that she should pay for sex with another woman, which she does, but that becomes expensive. Justin then suggests that she could become the one that gets paid for having sex with other women with the help of his girlfriend, The Girl (Emily Kinney), who makes these things happen. But, Abby is very reticent about this and only starts doing it on her own terms, i.e. she meets them first and only at her done up apartment. After a while, Abby sets up a select list of clientele that she has sessions with a couple of days a week, but all this doesn't help her relationship with Kate and with a buyer interested in the apartment and the arrival of a local housewife she has an interest in for a session, Sam (Maggie Siff), things are going to spin out of control fast. Interesting little movie with a strong lead from the always great Robin Weigert and interesting to find out that lesbian housewives and just as bored/bad as straight housewives.

Here we go again with another HD redo, this time from The Informers, which unsurprisingly is long forgotten. Having another look at the movie, it feels like a movie that has been gutted to get down to 90 minutes, with only the 'highlights' remaining (thankfully a lot of Amber Heard awesomely nude). But, this is such an empty movie, nothing to say, no point made, just stuff happening to a bunch of arseholes in L.A. If I wanted that I'd watch reality TV...

Update for 15 May...

City Baby is a drama set in Portland following Cloey (Cora Benesh) who's carefree existence is about to be challenged. Currently masquerading as a model/actress, she is being pushed by her best friend Paige (Jillian Leigh) to join her in New York to escape Portland. Her long term boyfriend Jesse (Andrew Harris), still trying to make with his low rung band City Baby, is possibly the only thing keeping her in Portland, but that changes when their relationship disintegrates between his flirting with groupies, him not going to her play and then finally she meets Michael (Richard Keith) and has a brief fling with him when Cloey and Jesse break up. At the urging of her father, she takes a job as a receptionist, but New York is calling and she will find her way there. Fairly watchable movie about 20-somethings trying to find there way, even with its inevitable hipster trappings. Cora Benesh (from The Sacred), who co-wrote the movie, handles the movie fairly well and she's pretty to look at too.

Update for 14 May...

Buttwhistle (and the winner for the worst title of the year goes to...) is an offbeat comedy that follows Ogden aka Buttwhistle (Trevor Morgan) who floats through life, not really doing a lot. He daydreams about former friend/girlfriend Rose (Analeigh Tipton), who's now dead. He hangs out with a group of outsiders, but mainly with Hate Crime John (Adhir Kalyan) until one day he accidentally saves the life of Beth (Elizabeth Rice) who was committing suicide. She decides to follow him around as a thank you, which Ogden isn't much bothered by, even when she makes massive attempts to upend his life with silly stunts, alienates most of the people he knows and when she's not doing that, tries to have sex with him. But, Ogden isn't much bothered... Oh dear, there's offbeat comedy and then there's completely infuriatingly offbeat comedy and Buttwhistle is well and truly the latter. Not a lot happens, the lead characters are impossible to feel motivated about particularly Ogden who is completely impassive and there's so many random wacky things going on that you ever go along for the ride or throw yourself out the window. I was very near tempted to do the latter numerous times. The only good bits are below. Do not watch this movie ever...

Update for 12 May...

Nurse 3D is an exploitation thriller where Abby Russell (Paz de la Huerta) is a decorated nurse, who also happens to be a married man-hating serial killer in her off hours. When Danni (Katrina Bowden) arrives at the hospital, Abby is asked to mentor her, but Abby wants much more, becoming infatuated with her, drugging her and having her way with her and Abby is going to get her one way or another, even if Danni seems to have no inkling of this infatuation and is totally involved with her paramedic boyfriend Steve (Corbin Bleu). Danni doesn't even bite when Abby rids her of her terrible stepfather (Martin Donovan). When new HR head Rachel Adams (Melanie Scrofano) recognises Abby from her previous life, it all starts to unravel for Abby. And a lot of dead bodies will be left in her wake. Nurse 3D is completely silly, but then that's the point. de la Huerta is a limited actress, but she is well cast here, using her sensational nude body to intimidate most of the cast and her deadpan delivery and always sullen look actually pays off here. She seems to be having a blast, well as much as one can when you're always sullen. This is a really trashy movie, but a lot of fun. If you're looking for more than that, you're in the wrong place.

That time again where previous series get a HD upgrade, this time three movies from 5 or so years ago. I keep coming back to that dark 'nude' scene from Rachel Bilson and still can't see a nipple even in HD. That's the best we'll probably ever get for her sadly.

Should be more redux series tomorrow.

Update for 8 May...

Quick update today from Wolf Creek 2. I saw this movie in cinemas in February and if you want to read what I had to say, you can see it here. I also mentioned that the cinema version was edited to get a lower classification, but looking at this version, it is the same time as the uncut version, but there isn't any nudity added. Might have to check the uncut Bluray when it gets released.

Update for 6 May...

Autumn Blood is an Austrian made drama where a few years after the death of their father at the hands of the mayor (Peter Stormare), The Girl (Sophie Lowe) and her younger brother are faced with losing their mother as well. One day, a hunter (Samuel Vauramo) rapes The Girl and then her mother dies. In town to get supplies, The Girl is spied by the butcher (Gustaf Skarsgård), who wants his own time with the girl. After being raped again, the hunter, butcher and their friend decide to kill off The Girl and her brother to rid themselves of further problem, but it may not be as easy as it seems. Beautifully shot, but boy is this a depressing movie, which I don't mind. Minimal dialogue throughout, hell if Sophie Lowe says 5 words in the movie when she's on the screen 90% of the time, I'll go he. This works as the movie is never boring, sure it's tough going through all the hardship, but it's still pretty watchable if you don't mind the dark stuff. And hell, I'll watch anything with Sophie Lowe in it...

Update for 5 May...

Another quick series.

The Factory is a thriller where determined detective Mike Fletcher (John Cusack) is desperately searching for a serial killer who is murdering prostitutes. With the help of his partner Kelsey (Jennifer Carpenter), he seems to be closing in on the killer Carl (Dallas Roberts). Then, Fletcher's daughter Abby (Mae Whitman) is kidnapped by Carl when he mistakes her for a prostitute. It turns out that Carl is keeping women in his basement so that he can impregnate them and they can produce babies for him. Fletcher becomes more and more desperate, getting himself kicked off the case, which only makes him more unhinged. Can Fletcher find Abby before Carl has his way with her? Written and directed by a couple of Aussie actors although made in Canada, The Factory is a fairly stock standard thriller that ticks off all the clichés although the twist in the end comes out of nowhere and actually adds a little something the rest of the movie is missing. Also, it has to be said, that the plot is bizarrely close to the Ariel Castro crimes, even though the movie was made well before he was found out. Hmmm...

Australian Classics for 4 May...

A quick Australian Classic to pass the time.

Race For the Yankee Zephyr is a 1981 action thriller made in New Zealand where pilot Barney (Ken Wahl) drops rambunctious animal hunter Gibbie (Donald Pleasence) in the river to cool off, only for him to discover a lost World War 2 plane, the 'Yankee Zephyr'. Word gets around that he has found the plane and that's when US government agents led by Theo Brown (George Peppard) want the plane as it apparently has $50 million worth of gold bullion on board. With the help of Gibbie's reluctant daughter Sally (Lesley Ann Warren), can Gibbie and Barney stall the agents long enough so that they can get to the plane first and get the spoils? Written by the recently deceased Everett de Roche and directed by actor David Hemmings, his second Australian movie after the previous year's The Survivor, this movie was to be filmed in Australia until local unions weren't happy with the leads not being Australian, so the production moved to beautiful Queenstown in New Zealand (recently where TV series Top of the Lake was shot). To be honest, the best thing about this movie is the location which is used extremely well. The movie is fine with Pleasence being the stand out (as he usually is), but there are plenty of better movies of a similar ilk, not in the least the same year's Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Redux Friday for 2 May...

It's that time of the week again and this time it's back to 2006 and the Brazilian tourist board approved Turistas. Another one of those movies I seem to come back to even though it's only OK. I've sort of sat on redoing this one for a while because I knew that it would take forever, but now it's done and as I'm hoping with many of these reduxes, I can now move on and never see these movies again. Here's hoping...

This was going to be a two series update, but the Turistas update turned out to be quite big, so it's just the one today. A few of the videos overlap, quite a bit actually, but they follow the actress over that period of the movie. Should be another couple of reduxes tomorrow.
