Update for 28 June...

A couple of new Australian movies for today's update. A Few Less Men is the follow up to the minor hit A Few Best Men, that continues on from where the first movie left off but now the three remaining friends have to take the friend who died home and just like the original, everything goes wrong. I thought the original was an OK movie, not particularly funny but had its moments but the sequel is almost devoid of laughs save for a weird Shane Jacobsen cameo. And for supposed raunchy comedy, both movies are surprisingly sexless which seems to be the way they're making raunchy/sex comedies now. Disappointing... Ravenswood is one of those idiots go for a cheap thrill in an insane asylum and it goes horribly wrong movies that they make about a half-a-dozen of every year. None remarkable and all made for the American market because there seems to be a bunch of Americans who inexplicably like these incredibly mediocre movies. This is no different, directed by JD Cohen, who seems to make a forgettable genre movie every couple of years that never get released in Australia. Hell, Ravenswood has only been released in America, so the tradition continues. The movie is incredibly poor but the one concession I'll give is that is features Ashley Fitzgerald, an actress I quite like, who hasn't been seen on screen since the TV series I Rock 7 years ago. That's the only recommendation I can give this shitheap.

Update for 26 June...

A Cure For Wellness is a thriller where a young executive Lockhart (Dane DeHaan) is charged with bringing back the CEO of a failing company from a health farm in Europe. When he gets there, Lockhart is given the runaround by everyone including head doctor Volmer (Jason Isaacs) so he's asked to come back later, but a car accident leads him to be a patient at the facility. As he recovers he finds the CEO, who is disoriented but agrees to come with Lockhart, but yet again the staff interferes and the CEO goes missing. Lockhart goes wandering around the facility and meets a young girl Hannah (Mia Goth), who seems to have a free run around the place while all the other patients have strict rules. After almost dying during a treatment, Lockhart becomes more desperate to leave the facility even just to make a phone call, so he goes into town with Hannah to make a phone call at the pub but he gets into trouble with the locals when they become possessive of Hannah and they are saved by the facility's security who have come with Volmer. Lockhart becomes closer to Hannah and more and more desperate to leave the facility (possibly bringing Hannah with him) as he discovers that nobody ever seems to leave. But Volmer will have his way. A long but Intriguing and disturbing movie that gets more and more insane by the minute with a final twist which may well be the most bat shit crazy thing I've seen in a while (although probably unnecessary). DeHaan is OK but seems a bit young for the role and Isaacs always plays good smarmy villain. Worth a look if you're into creepy medical thrillers, but be warned that the movie is two and a half hours long.

Update for 14 June...

Don't have much ready to go on the movie side, so here's a couple of quick updates from movies featuring Evan Rachel Wood that I had Bluray copies lying around of. I remember watching Across The Universe when it came out and I hated it, I'm not a fan of musicals and I can't think why I thought this would be different. Also there's an extended nude scene in the extras, so I've capped that too. The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman is an underwhelming movie about a young man (Shia LaBeouf) whose dead mother tells him to go to Bucharest for no reason in particular and this sets off a series of events that leads him to fall for the daughter (Evan Rachel Wood) of the bloke who he was sitting next to him on the plane over, who just happened to die on the flight. Nothing special, still baffled as to why he had to go to Bucharest except that's where the movie money was coming from...

Update for 7 June...

Embedded is an Australian two-hand dialogue-driven power drama where jaded Australian journalist Frank (Nick Barkla) and British academic Madeline (Laura Gordon) spend the night together, most of the time in his hotel room fucking and talking. Frank has just come back from Mali where he followed some unclassified American soldiers and saw some horrible things (maybe he saw too much), but he is incredibly cagey about all of it. Not that Madeline is more forthcoming. She is clearly more than just an academic and seems to know an awful lot about Frank despite meeting for the first time. As the sex and talk becomes more intense, Frank becomes more paranoid about everything and violent towards Madeline. What is it that Frank is afraid of and what exactly does Madeline want with Frank. Uneven movie that changes it's tone wildly from one scene to the next, not helped by having an unnecessary non-linear narrative. Barkla and Gordon, who both starred in the junkies in love drama Em4Jay (I'm not 100% on this but I think they're a couple in real life), work well together and get the most out of script despite it's limitations. But there's nothing earthshattering here, the motives of both characters are too vague and the twist doesn't come as a surprise so much as a way to end the movvie. Reminds me that I need to do a redux series with better quality videos for Em4Jay. Can't believe it's been ten years since that movie was released.

Update for 6 June...

White Girl is about Leah (Morgan Saylor) who has moved into an apartment in a new neighbourhood with her best friend Katie (India Menuez) where they spy a group of locals hanging out near their building. Leah is currently interning over the college break at a workplace run by Kelly (Justin Bartha) who she has a casual sexual relationship with. One night while wanting some drugs, she approaches the group of locals headed by Blue (Brian Marc) and well, Blue and his friends just happen to be low-level drug dealers and she gets the drugs and invites them into the apartment. Not long later, Leah and Blue are fucking and very much in love with one another and she even joins in with their drug dealing. Leah convinces Blue to step up and sell more drugs, but he is immediately arrested in a sting. Leah tries to get Blue out of jail including get the help of a sleazy lawyer (Chris Noth), but she needs $13,000 to pay him plus the drug dealer also wants his money. She starts selling drugs but also takes a whole lot more drugs as things get more desperate. Can she get Blue out of prison and how low will she go to do so? Pretty good but utterly depressing drama that just gets more depressing by the minute. Saylor is quite good in the lead, does some semi-explicit scenes throughout and handles her character's descent into hell very well. Hopefully we will see more from Saylor in the future.

Update for 4 June...

More telemovies, a couple of racier ones with the terrible stalker thriller Killer Assistant about an assistant who beds his boss and his motivation for doing so is an all-time baffler. Something about him giving her a ring when she was his babysitter and he thought that would mean they'd be together forever. Hahaha! Written by two Australian actresses Sophie Tilson and Shanrah Wakefield, who seem to be getting into the telemovie writing racket. They have another one called Wrong Swipe, another stalker thriller with Anna Hutchison that I must get around to watching. Maybe they'll air it at midday soon. The Face is a soapy drama about a young woman (Yasmine Bleeth) who has had a disfigured face from birth, falls in love with a nutjob who gets her involved in a robbery that goes bad and she goes to jail. A benefactor gives her plastic surgery to fix her face but it puts her back in contact with the nutjob. Pretty good as far as these go and quite a bit of Yasmine's side-boob is a nice bonus. Finally, A Wife's Nightmare is about a young woman (Lola Tash) who finds her long lost dad and is welcomed into the family, but the wife (Jennifer Beals) who was just released from a mental hospital is weary of the girl even though she seems on-the-level. And then something happens that changes everything and the wife's fears are finally released. Not great and Jennifer Beals really goes for it in the nutty stakes and the twist in the tale is a doozy, but it's still not great.

Redux for 3 June...

Well because I have nothing better to do, here's a ridiculous large and comprehensive redux series from Blue Crush, a movie I first capped 14 years ago and haven't seen since. Over 30 minutes of video from Blue Crush as the movie is basically girls in bikinis for a far portion of it. To tell you how much, I initially started with 70 minutes of footage that I edited down to the 32 you see below. The movie is 98 minutes before the credits. Ah well, it's done now. Used to cap Kate Bosworth a bit in the pre-johnnymoronic.com era, but not so much since despite having done some brief nude scenes. Might be time to change that.

There was also a Blue Crush 2 with Sharni Vinson and Sasha Jackson which was made in South Africa (Vinson recently made From A House On Willow Street in South Africa) and really has nothing to do with the original with the only similarity between the two being that there's three girls who surf.

Update for 1 June...

The Exception is a World War 2 drama where the jaded Nazi Captain Stefan Brandt (Jai Courtney) is transferred to The Netherlands to find a spy that the Nazis think have infiltrated the household of the deposed Kaiser Wilhelm II (Christopher Plummer), who is living in exile with his wife Princess Hermine (Janet McTeer). One of rules Stefan is given is not to fraternise with the help and that rule is broken in mere hours when he catches the eye of Mieke (Lily James) and they begin an affair. They sneak around and in the process fall for one another. Stefan follows Mieke one day and finds her leaving a church run a priest who is a Resistance sympathiser. Mieke then tells Stefan that she is Jewish which doesn't bother him but he suggests that she not tell anyone else this. Mieke becomes friendly with the Kaiser which she uses to suggest that she could kill the Kaiser. The priest says that he will come and tell her whether or not she should go ahead with the assassination, but before he gets word, Stefan has the priest arrested and tortured. Stefan and Mieke are then caught together by the Kaiser's right-hand man (Ben Daniels), but instead of punishment, the Kaiser welcomes it as he adores Mieke. Things are then further complicated when Heinrich Himmler (Eddie Marsan) makes a surprise visit with the Kaiser hoping Himmler will tell him that he can come back to Germany. Will Mieke kill the Kaiser and what will Stefan do with Mieke, the woman he loves? OK drama/thriller that intrigues despite Stefan taking many liberties in his love of Mieke, yeah he's jaded by his treatment by the Nazis but it's hard to believe he would let Mieke get as far as she does. Also, Stefan and Mieke are instantly fucking despite not knowing each other's name is just a little far-fetched. Despite some huge leaps of faith, The Exception is still a pretty watchable movie.
