Update for 29 October...

More recent horror. Sun Choke is a horror thriller where a mental unstable woman (Sarah Hagan) is looking to get out from her mother's (Barbara Crampton) tight grip. On a trip out, she becomes obsessed with another woman (Sara Malakul Lane) and begins stalking her before things spiral out of control and the bodies pile up. Not bad and a fair bit of nudity throughout. Cut. Shoot. Kill. is about an actress (Alexandra Socha, sadly nothing to cap from her...) who is cast in her biggest role to date, a horror movie made by a group of friends who've been together for quite a while. But there's something not quite right about their methods and actors start disappearing and when the actress works out she's in danger, she desperately tries to escape. A bit hit and miss and plays way too much with the 'is it real?' conceit but does have a decent twist ending.

Update for 26 October...

A couple of recent horror releases today. Dead Awake is a fairly decent sleep-paralysis horror thriller where a woman (Jocelin Donahue) dreams she is being choked in her sleep and then one day she dies and then her twin sister starts having the same dream and this dream keeps passing around to various members of her social circle and starts killing them one by one. I quite liked it, the sleep-paralysis stuff was quite chilling even if a bit overblown, surprised the movie hasn't got more love. Adaline is a poor horror movie about a struggling artist (Jill Evyn) who inherits a house from an unknown relative, so she moves in and begins to have horrifying dreams about her ancestors while someone stalks her. The story's fine but the movie is laughable, particularly the ending and it doesn't help that the two main male roles deliver two of the worst performances I've seen recently. At least the romantic lead looks good with his shirt because he has zero charisma, but that's not as bad as the mentally handicapped character who seems to have got his inspiration from Adam Sandler's 'slow' characters. He's so bad I kept expecting him to snap out of it and end up being the killer. Nope, terrible to the end...

Update for 20 October...

A couple of quick series from newly released Australian movies, of course not yet released in Australia, of course not. Surprised there was something to cap from Jungle, but no complaints particularly with Lily Sullivan briefly turning up. Also a fantasy scene featuring Natasha Pruchniewicz has a blink and you'll miss peak at her left breast but you also clearly see her nipple blurred out as shown in the raw caps below. Also should be noted there was another Australian movie called The Jungle released about 2-3 years ago, not confusing at all... OtherLife is a rare Perth made movie (well, Hounds of Love was also made in Perth) about a virtual reality project that's about to be made public, but not before the government gets its greedy hands on it. Good to see Jessica de Gouw up front of an Australian movie again and from the director of Wasted On The Young, who I remember was touted as the next big thing in 2010 and this is his first movie since. Hmm...

Update for 19 October...

One Percent More Humid is a drama about two friends, Catherine (Julia Garner), who has arrived back in town to visit Iris (Juno Temple), who still lives and goes to college in their old home town. But things aren't the same and the main reason for that is because of an incident a few years previous where a car accident they were involved in ended in the death of another friend, Mae (Olivia Luccardi). Iris is doing her thesis on poetry and she becomes close to her supervisor, Gerald (Alessandro Nivola), who's having issues with his absent wife (Maggie Siff), and Iris and Gerald eventually begin an affair. Catherine and Iris are drifting apart, so Catherine decides to seek repentance from Mae's brother Billy (Philip Ettinger) who despises the girls, but instead, Catherine throws herself at Billy, which also leads to an affair. Both relationships are doomed but not before the truth about the accident is unveiled and has a devastating effect on Catherine, but in times like these, it's good to have a friend in Iris to lean on. OK drama, nothing special and fairly reminiscent of the director's previous movie, The Lifeguard, in fact fairly similar plots of someone going back to their old home town and beginning an illicit affair. I pretty much watch anything Juno Temple is in, so this was a no brainer but honestly One Percent More Humid is nothing special. And I was surprised that Juno and Julia weren't playing sisters, they definitely could have. Baffling title too, taken from a throwaway line in the movie.

Update for 17 October...

A couple of female led new releases for today's update.

Paint It Black is a drama about Josie (Alia Shawkat), a part-time nude model and actress who is given the horrible news that her boyfriend Michael (Rhys Wakefield) has killed himself. Josie struggles with the news and escapes into a world of alcohol and drugs to deal with MIchael's death. Meanwhile, Michael's mother Meredith (Janet McTeer) is also not coping well and puts the blame squarely on Josie and begins stalking her and generally trying to make Josie as miserable as she is. They play a game of tit-for-tat where they try to make each other more miserable with Meredith taking all of Michael's possessions from Josie's place and Josie taking a few things from Meredith's place. This is only making things worse for both and they call a truce and then Josie hits rock bottom and Meredith reluctantly decides to help her. Maybe they can both get through the grief better together... OK but fairly depressing movie directed by actress Amber Tamblyn, full of artful touches and a couple of good performances from the two female leads.

M.F.A is a rape revenge thriller where shy art college student Noelle (Francesca Eastwood) is struggling to find her style in her art and her creative abilities seem to be stagnating in her crucial final year. She has a crush on classmate Luke (Peter Vack), who invites her to a party at his house and they hit it off, but Luke wants more and forces himself on Noelle and ending in rape. Noelle is devastated, but goes about the process of reporting the rape, but finds the process completely unhelpful and useless. Noelle decides to confront Luke and during the confrontation, accidentally pushes Luke off the top floor, killing him. She runs away, but this incident brings her a new confidence and she contemplates getting revenge on other campus rapists, starting with a well known case involving three frat boys who raped a girl and filmed it, yet no justice was done. Noelle seduces one of the men, during which she drugs and chokes him to death and the ease of it spurs her on to keep killing, but not only that, she finds inspiration in her art and begins developing darker pieces which impresses her teacher and classmates. Noelle kills the two other frat boys, but still hungers for more and when she finds out that her housemate Skye (Leah McKendrick) was once raped and is struggling to get over it, she knows what she has to do. But with a detective (Clifton Collins Jr.) on her tail, things don't go to plan... Solid revenge thriller with Francesca continuing the family business from her old man and does a pretty decent job of it. M.F.A shows the awfulness of the college and police bureaucracy in such cases and the devastating effects it has on the victims and that brings a certain sadness to the movie. And the scenes involving what the women's group are doing to make rape an issue on campus are fairly laughable and sadly probably a true reflection of reality. The college rape revenge thriller seems to be a burgeoning genre with college culture being prominent in the news recently and M.F.A is a decent addition.

(added 24.11.2017) So for M.F.A., I've gone back and redone all the raw caps and added quite a number more including many more nippy frames of Francesca Eastwood plus some raw caps of Jess Nurse and Leah McKendrick that I didn't do last month. Also while I was rechecking the movie, I found a nip-slip from Leah McKendrick that's so brief (it's 3-4 frames) and right on the bottom of the frame, it's easy to miss, but I saw it when I took a closer look. Update for 13 October...

Time for a quick Spanish update, haven't done one for a while and I have a few movies lying around. Was going to put this in two updates, but fuck it, just release the lot, there's not really that much. Some quick movie synopses:

El Bar is the latest from one of my favourite directors Álex de la Iglesia about a group of people stuck in a coffee shop/bar after two people are shot dead by a sniper outside of the place. Is it a terrorist attack, lone wolf shooter or something more sinister. It becomes apparent that it's the latter and after five of the people in the bar are banished to the basement as they may be contaminated, they are left to fight for the four syringes of the possible antidote. Part dark comedy, part survival thriller, not a bad little movie although it's definitely a lesser de la Iglesia movie and I probably prefer his crazier stuff, not that El Bar doesn't have it's moments of craziness. Having said that, Blanca Suárez spending the last 30 minutes of the movie in her underwear is definitely worth a look, check out the almost 10 minute video below.

El Guardián Invisible is a serial killer procedural thriller where Amaia (Marta Etura) investigates a series of murders of teenage girls found naked with a somewhat religious motivations. Pretty stock standard stuff with Amaia complicated personal life and the case bringing up old nightmares.

Neruda is about Chilean writer Pablo Neruda (Luis Gnecco) who goes on the run with his wife after he becomes a wanted man after becoming prominent in the Communist Party. He tries to evade a persistent but dimwitted detective (Gael García Bernal) who Neruda manages to keep one step ahead of at every turn. Pretty decent movie.

And finally Pieles, an absolutely bewildering movie about a bunch of deformed people who attempt to get on with life despite being 'abnormal'. One part engrossing, one part disgusting and one part appalling, the dynamic really changes from scene to scene and sometimes just inside the scene. One character who has a bumhole for a mouth and a mouth where their bumhole is really has to be witnessed. It's absolutely jawdropping and well, just plain wrong. All of the other 'deformities' were at least believable; the bumhole mouth was clearly played for laughs and is so widely off, you really have to wonder the thinking behind it. Apart from that, Pieles is actually a fairly straight series of stories, it just pushes the boundaries of taste more than once and in more than one way.

A quick update from a new Australian movie, Don't Tell, a courtroom drama based on the true story of a child sex abuse case in Queensland. Stock standard stuff that feels more like a telemovie, but is stacked with a fairly decent Australian cast, even in minor roles.

Update for 4 October...

A couple of new movies including finishing off the update from Message From The King that also features some stuff of Teresa Palmer from the movie.

Smartass is a set over one day/night comedy/drama set 'before cell phones' where 15 year-old Freddie (Joey King) is looking to leave home, but on the night she decides to do so, she gets arrested and then released on a technicality, which leaves her alone to deal with the Californian night life. Meanwhile, an acquaintance of Freddie's, Donny (Luke Pasqualino) is paying off a debt to crazy criminal Paolo (Arturo del Puerto) who's non-stop fighting with his girlfriend Venice (Cara Santana). Staying with them is the unstable girlfriend of Paolo's brother, Chu Chu (Nicole LaLiberte), who Paolo 'gifts' to Donny, much to his chagrin as she's a complete pain in the arse. Also, Paolo's brother Lobo needs $50,000 protection money in jail from Paolo, but he doesn't care even when the friends of the black man Lobo killed start coming for their piece. Meanwhile, Freddie gets herself into a number of scrapes including being sold into sex work by Mickey (Jake Weary). All this comes together for a helluva finale where she might not live to get to her ultimate goal, going to art college. Feels very much like those 90s teen movies where a bunch of things happen to teen kids trying to make sense of the adult world, reminding me a lot of S.F.W. And like S.F.W, it's terrible but also surprisingly full of casual racism and numerous scenes where women are just bashed, sometimes just for no reason other than love. Nicole LaLiberte's character is an abomination even though she is playing the same type of character she always plays, but this time with added annoyance and some bizarrely unnecessary racism (the monkey scene is fucking disgusting). The scene where she's killed is so off, I don't know whether to be disgusted or relieved her character is finally gone. Which leaves me scratching my head why the talented Joey King is stuck in this turd of a movie and not without some absolutely shitty scenes (at least 2 scenes, both involving perverted middle aged men are fucking horrible). There's precious little comedy in this comedy, just hatefully foul scenes, one after the other. Now, I don't mind hateful movies as such (Christ, look at the stuff on this site), but Smartass is so disgusting that I can't believe that less than a week after calling The Little Hours the worst movie of the year, Smartass manages to be even worse. Jesus, I sure know how to pick 'em.

Update for 1 October...

Una is a drama set over one day (with some flashbacks) where Una (Rooney Mara) spots a photo of a group of workers and sees that former neighbour and lover Ray (Ben Mendelsohn) is one of the people in the photo. She tracks him down and confronts him about why he has not come back into her life. A couple of things, Una was 13 when they started their relationship and Ray went to jail for it. She confronts Ray, now Paul and he is extremely reluctant to talk to Una, but Una is persistent and wants him back. At the same time, Paul is supposed to give news that six workers are to be fired from his workplace and this does not go down well with his co-workers especially Scott (Riz Ahmed), whose been told that he's one of the six. As Paul tries to avoid responsibility for the workers, he is stuck with Una and he may have to deal with his feelings for her. Decent but fairly disturbing drama that is basically a filmed play, but is driven by its two excellent leads in Mara and Mendelsohn. Tough watch but worth a look.
