Update for 29 November...

A big update from TV movies in today's update. I don't watch most of these movies on the norm and it usually takes something extraordinary for me to watch them or they feature an actress I like. So, when Stalker's Prey starts a typical stalker plot with a shark attack, it's hard to pass up. Turns out it also ends with a shark attack. In between, there's the typical stalker plot where the person who save the shark attack victim develops an obsession with her. Wild and silly movie featuring the teen daughter from the Poltergeist remake and a bit more fun than usual.

Update for 27 November...

Haven't capped Australian movies much recently, so here's a few made in the recent past and are either finally released or I just got around to watching.

Turbines is a thriller where new immigrant couple Attila (Igor Breakenback) and Jana (Bianca Bradey) are forced to move to a country town to live for 2 years as part of Australia's 'absolutely perfect' immigration policy. Attila takes a job helping Sean (Warren Coulton) on his farm near a bunch of turbines. Jana becomes pregnant while Attila and Sean are both overcome from their work with Sean becoming ill and Attila drifts off regularly and has violent outbursts. Jana gives birth to a boy and five years later they are still living in the country town with little hope of moving to the city. Then, the murders start; first one of Attila's workmate's girlfriend, then a bunch of university students who are studying the effects of the turbines, then his workmates and then anyone who comes in contact with Attila including the police while Jana falls ill, probably the turbines fault. Wow, Turbines is a baffling thriller that takes the flimsy notion of turbines causing various afflictions and goes wild by alluding to the turbines causing people to turn into ruthless killers. Which would be fine if the movie was played as a comedy, but it plays fairly straight with a rare hint of an attempt at humour such as in the opening scene. Shame because as a violent thriller, it's just silly and it doesn't help that the movie criminally underuses Bianca Bradey, who apart from a couple of sex scenes, spends most of the movie in a daze or the entire second half in bed/off screen suggesting she wasn't available. Apparently, the movie was made in 2011 which probably explains her limited time onscreen, doesn't make it any less disappointing.

And considering how the movie plays out, this from the closing credits is pretty laughable:

Jugular is a psychological thriller where Jack (Gregory Pakis) turns up in Melbourne from Perth via Asia to restart his writing career and decides to rent the flat where an infamous serial killer killed himself in the shower. One day while bored, he is accosted by a junkie (Matt Furlani) who introduces him to a couple of 16 year-old girls including Janie (Fiannah de Rue) who is also a drug addict and tries to get Jack to have sex with her, but he declines, preferring to be protective of her and tells her that he can stay at his flat if she ever feels the need to get away. Jack becomes lonely in his apartment and obsessed with the serial killer and more so when he finds hidden above the shower the killer's diary and a bunch of DVDs showing his victims. His obsession leads him to start stalking women while he freaks out a waitress (Samantha Scott) he asks out on a date and then becomes obsessive towards her. But when Janie is beaten up by a drug dealer, the serial killer instinct has taken over and nobody is safe. OK movie that wears it's low budget as a badge of pride and gets better as the serial killer begins to take over Jack. It does have a jarring soundtrack that becomes ear piercing often which doesn't make the viewing experience all the pleasurable. The writer/director's next movie cum web series Can't Win. Do Try. is better and well worth a look. Both movies/web series are available for free on YouTube.

Skin Deep is a lesbian drama where over one day, Leah (Zara Zoe) is waiting for her truant boyfriend to pick her up from her 'alternate' cancer treatment when she has a brief encounter with pushy Caitlin (Monica Zanetti). Caitlin apologises to Leah and asks her for a coffee as she waits for her boyfriend and she reluctantly agrees more interested in her phone than conversation. Turns out Leah's boyfriend has forgotten her and she begins to hit it off with Caitlin in a friendly way before they come across Caitlin's ex (Elizabeth Blackmore) who is out her new girlfriend (Billie Rose Prichard). This triggers Caitlin to perform self-harm, something she seems to do regularly and Leah attempts to calm her down which helps a new friendship blossom. Not much to this movie and at 70 minutes, it doesn't last long which helps make the movie watchable for it's short runtime but unless your interested in a two-hander conversation piece, it's probably not of much interest. There's also a movie from a couple of years ago called Ellipsis directed by actor David Wenham that has pretty much the same concept. Nothing to cap from that movie though.

Update for 25 November...

90s weekend never ends with another update featuring a bunch of comedies.

In The Soup is about a hapless writer Adolpho (Steve Buscemi) with a 500 page sleep-inducing script about philosophers Adorno and Nietzsche who wants to make it into a movie but has no contacts and is broke. So he sells his script for $500 and surprising he gets interest from a shady character named Joe (Seymour Cassell) who totally wants to make the movie except he gets involved in the whole bunch of little scams that get Joe a little bit of money which he shares with Adolpho and they live it up on the money they make/steal. Maybe he'll make the movie, well probably not, but Adolpho will finally start living. Fairly good debut movie from director Alexandre Rockwell and Buscemi and Cassell and great particularly Cassell as a small time scammer who seems genuinely interested in making the movie despite no real means to do so. Has a whole bunch of actors that are fairly well known in small roles even blink and you'll miss roles like the unrelated Sam Rockwell and Stanley Tucci. Very much of 90s independent movie in style but a more watchable one than it looks at first glance.

Update for 23 November...

90s weekend up with a big update from the 1995 sex comedy Live Nude Girls. Movie is basically a group of life long friends who get together for a sleepover the night before the wedding of one of the group. Plenty of sexy stuff throughout as they talk about sex and their fantasies. Saw this movie once or twice back in the day on TV but it's been 20-odd years since I've seen it. Live Nude Girls is a fairly watchable movie and it's rare for a sex comedy to be told from a female perspective, so it has that point of difference. Has a mostly recognisable cast that still get plenty of work except for the main actress Lora Zane who hadn't been in anything for 5 years before this movie and barely anything afterwards.

Update for 20 November...

Zeroville is another James Franco directed movie that takes place from 1969-1979 where Vikar (James Franco) comes to Hollywood to make movies after watching the movie A Place In The Sun and becoming obsessed with Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor from that movie, so much so that he shaves his head and gets a tattoo of the two of them from the movie. He gets a job making sets for movies but he wants to be more involved and one day while watching the making of Love Story, he meets two people who will help him make his dream come true; bullish writer Viking Man (Seth Rogen) and editor Dotty (Jacki Weaver). He starts editing movies as an apprentice to Dotty where he comes across a movie called Vampyros Lesbos and become interested in its star Soledad (Megan Fox), who he meets at a party at film producer Rondell's (Will Ferrell) house where they end up falling for each other. After working on Apocalypse Now, Rondell asks Vikar to edit a directorless movie he is making starring Soledad and he becomes obsessed with making the perfect movie. Despite constant conflict with Rondell, the movie wins top prize at the Venice Film Festival. Soledad is a troubled soul and he finds out that she's been hiding her daughter Zazi (Joey King) and then looks after her when Soledad dies in a car accident. Even after death, Vikar keeps seeing Soledad everywhere and he's determined to make the memory of her everlasting. Baffling movie that's a loving tribute to an era of cinema that is often looked upon fondly and this movie makes so many references to people, movies and things that happen throughout the period that it becomes an overwhelming mess where dates become incredibly muddled. There's scenes that are absolutely surreal, including one where Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorcese, George Lucas, Brian de Palma, Paul Schrader and Marlon Brando are having a conversation at a party that is interrupted by Viking Man, who is clearly Apocalypse Now writer John Milius which is absolute wank and has to be seen to be believed. And the major plot involving Spanish actress Soledad Miranda (although she's not named that in the movie but it's clearly her) is a bizarre addition, even more so as she died in 1970. I'd love to know what the point of it all is beyond a tribute to a prominent era of film but that would probably only ask more questions than it would answer. See Franco's other new release Pretenders instead unless you want to see a bunch of scenes recreating moments in 70s cinema.

Update for 19 November...

Some new movies.

Earthquake Bird is a mystery drama set in Japan in 1989 where Lucy Fly (Alicia Vikander) is working as a translator in Japan when her friend goes missing and when a body washes up in the sea. Lucy is called in by the police for an interview where she tells the story of how they met. One day, Lucy is walking down a path where she sees a photographer Teiji (Naoki Kobayashi) takes a photo of her and she begins to chat with him. From there they strike up a relationship where Teiji takes photographs of her to the point of obsession but that doesn't bother Lucy as she likes the attention she is getting. At her birthday party, Lucy is introduced to an American woman Lily Bridges (Riley Keough) by her English friend (Jack Huston), who has only just come to Japan working as a bartender and struggles with the language and customs. Lucy doesn't make friends easily and she is reluctant to let Lily in but she slowly does and forms an attraction to her which changes when she introduces Lily to Teiji and he starts taking photographs of her. After falling ill during a trip and being left behind, Lucy becomes insanely jealous of Lily as she seems to have become Teiji's new fancy. As we find out throughout her story, Lucy is a magnet for death and when Lily goes missing after Lucy shuts her out of her life, will death strike again and has Lucy killed Lily? Interesting mystery movie that's mostly depressing and tragic and Lucy being a fairly cold character adds to the mood and Vikander plays her well. The mystery part of the story is a little anti-climatic thanks to an unnecessary red herring but that is thankfully overshadowed by Lucy's intriguing story. Not a bad movie at all.

Update for 16 November...

That time of the week again.

I've only ever known of Bright Angel from the occasional pics/clip I've seen in passing. Viewing it for the first time on Bluray, it turns out it is a rough nut drama about a 18-year old man (Dermot Mulroney) who helps a young drifter (Lili Taylor) after having a bust up with his stern father when his mother leaves home with another man. He helps the drifter try to get her brother out of prison but things spiral out of control quickly and it becomes a matter of life and death. Particularly harsh tale but fairly well done and full of fairly well known actors in small roles with stand outs including Delroy Lindo as an angry gun nut wanting revenge on those who made him disabled and Bill Pullman as a sleazy con artist looking to rip the drifter off.

The follow-up to Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer bizarrely feels like the next in the adventures of Henry, as he is still a drifter moving onto the next town but now homeless, which he does not like. He picks himself up with a job at a port-a-loo company and lives with his workmate and his wife and it turns out that the workmate is an arsonist for hire which intrigues Henry and he joins him burning down businesses for the insurance. One job ends with two junkies catching them and Henry's serial killer instincts come alive and the killings start up again with his new apprentice. Not a bad follow-up but it sorely misses the magnetic energy of MIchael Rooker who is pretty hard to replace.

A couple of new Australian movies. The Nightingale is an incredibly depressing movie and I find that the best way to describe the plot is that it is a significantly less sleazy I Spit On Your Grave set in 1800s Tasmania. The plots are remarkably similar.

Something new for once.

Pretenders is a drama where in 1979, an aspiring filmmaker Terry (Jack Kilmer) meets actress with a striking resemblance to his favourite actress Anna Karina, Catherine (Jane Levy) at a cinema and instantly falls for her but blows it big time when speaking with her. He also meets budding photographer and a man with a gift of attracting women, Phil (Shameik Moore) and they becomes friends. Turns out Catherine regularly goes to the cinema and a few weeks later Terry catches up with her and with Phil, they become friends with the promise that Terry wants to write and make a short film just for her. Over time, Catherine and Terry begin a relationship but she is also attracted to Phil which gets complicated when Terry finds them having sex. In 1983, they are all still friends but Terry is now a film critic who has expanded his short film looking to make a feature film. He also hooks up with Catherine again but it's not as serious. Meanwhile, he meets actress Victoria (Juno Temple) and they sort of hit it off which gets more serious when she helps him get his screenplay made. They get engaged but Catherine makes her feelings clear to Terry and they get back together, which disappoints Phil who goes into a spiral of sex that leads him to be contract AIDS. Catherine disappears and it becomes clear that Terry didn't really know her at all. One of the numerous movies James Franco directs every year, this drama about love and film is one of his more accessible ones and isn't too bad although it has a fairly implausible ending which unravels most of what happens before it. The three leads are fine and their friendship/relationships are intriguing enough until it all goes off the rails. There's also a bunch of actors who turns up in blink and you'll miss them roles like Dennis Quaid as Terry's aloof father and a couple of actresses from Franco's TV show The Deuce, Margarita Levieva and Olivia Luccardi. Otherwise, not a bad little movie particularly if you are into movies that are about a love of movies.

Update for 11 November...

One last 90s update before I move on featuring a couple of series I've been holding onto for way too long and finally finished capping them. They are the ones with the long videos.

Scanners III: The Takedown is the first Scanners movie I've seen (I haven't even seen the Cronenberg original; as I found recently, I've got a lot to catch up on in regards to Cronenberg) and it's a pretty poor movie, every scanners mind trick scene is embarrassing, people looking like they're straining for a shit as they're deep in a mind battle. God, I hope the Cronenberg original isn't like this.

Mirror Mirror is only marginally better even though there's a similar mind power plot. At least there's no straining happening and the plot is somewhat more tolerable and the lead actress Rainbow Harvest could be Winona Ryder's sister. Somehow the Mirror Mirror series has 4 movies and I've seen the second one but there's nothing to cap from that movie and looks like it was made for the price of the mansion they rented starring the girl from Mr. Belvedere plus an early role for Mark Ruffalo. The third movie looks promising on the capping front as it's subtitled The Voyeur but looks like this and the fourth movie are not going to be in HD any time soon.

Not much to say about the rest. Outside Providence is an affable enough movie from the Farrelly Brothers about a kid forced to go to a private school but ends up making the most of it and falling in love with Amy Smart. Montana is another hitmen/women movie where everything goes wrong and nobody can trust anyone, boring... although it has a pretty decent cast of fairly well known actors. Beowulf is another retelling of the Beowulf epic poem with Christopher Lambert but this one inexplicably turns into Predator which is a baffling development.

What? More 90s movies? Of course. Movies sure loved hitmen in the 90s. Diary Of A Hitman is yet another one where a hitman (Forest Whitaker) has a crisis of conscience which comes at the right time for Jain (Sherilyn Fenn), who was to be the hitman's next victim. Strangely plays as a straight drama and isn't all that interesting as a result. Grosse Point Blank does a similar plot far better than this movie and has a laugh along the way.

Update for 5 November...

Got a whole bunch of 90s movies recently and they've been piling up too quickly, so I'm going to make a few updates of 90s movies over the next few days to make a dent in that pile. Not much to say about this update, the only movie of the four featured below that I watched was Point Blank, a bog awful B-thriller about prisoners who escape from a prison bus and take over a shopping mall while one of the crims cashes out and wastes an inordinate amount of time doing so before inevitably double-crossing them. Stars Mickey Rourke, clearly at a low point in his career although he's not bad in this movie in a baffling role as a lost soul who tries to save his prison escapee brother who's mixed up in the plot while being a ridiculously efficient John McClane. Also of note is Danny Trejo, hot off Con Air, who plays a total psychopath who is going to make the most of prison escape and Danny is clearly having a lot of fun playing this character. Doesn't really play characters like this any more interestingly enough.

Update for 2 November...

90s weekend once more. I capped a couple of early 90s Amityville movies a few months back and now it's time to move onto the mid-90s ones.

Amityville: A New Generation is about a photographer who is given the mirror from the Amityville house and as always, it begins a death toll as well as bring up bad memories for the photographer. After a predictably silly beginning, this movie gets better the longer it goes as it delves into the photographer's father who was the Amityville murderer and how the photographer grapples with these repressed memories. The main cast is pretty anonymous although Julia Nickson is always worth a look in whatever she's in but the supporting cast including Terry O'Quinn, Richard Roundtree (and his ridiculous art work), Lin Shaye and even David Naughton from An American Werewolf In London each add something to the movie.

Amityville: Dollhouse is about a step family who move into their new house which just happens to be built on the old Amityville property and has the old fireplace. When the father finds a dollhouse that is a replica of the house, he gives it to his stepdaughter as a present and wouldn't you know it, the dollhouse is evil and starts causing strange things to happen to the family. Fairly low rent addition where most of what happens is fairly minor until the ending and none of the main characters face any real danger.

Update for 1 November...

It redux time. I capped the fullscreen DVD of Nobody's Baby only a few months ago and now a widescreen HD copy has become available. The fullscreen version shows slightly more in some scenes, particularly the Robyn Adamson video below, so I've kept both versions at the original update.
