Update for 30 April...

A couple of 80s (both from 1984) New Zealand movies that have both recently had Bluray releases. This is my first look at both of them.

Death Warmed Up is a 1984 horror movie where school boy Michael (Michael Hurst) is chemically coerced by insane scientist Dr. Archer Howell (Gary Day) into killing his parents including his father who is the doctor's biggest critic. It seems that the doctor has created a cure for death, but Michael's father is morally against it. Well, Michael gets 7 years in a psychiatric facility for killing his parents and the doctor gets his own facility to practice his cure for death. Some time after he is released, Michael convinces his girlfriend Sandy (Margaret Umbers) and his best friend Lucas (William Upjohn) as well as Lucas's girlfriend Jeannie (Norelle Scott) to go to Waiheke Island where there are some tunnels that were used during World War 2 and explore them. Coincidentally, Dr. Howell's facility is also on this island and some of his experiments are roaming around freaking out or menacing the locals or dying in the most horrific ways possible because the experiments don't always work (including a welcome cameo from Bruno Lawrence as the first experiment). What Michael hasn't told his friends is that he's there to get revenge on the doctor and plans to enter the facility through the tunnels. Well, all hell breaks loose and the doctor unleashes his army of neverdead 'zombies' to cause complete mayhem. So, who will survive the chaos? Messy movie that pushes a lot of the right buttons but has such a ridiculous plot that it stumbles around a lot and has a very abrupt ending suggesting a possible sequel that never came or even lost footage/heavy re-editing. Extremely violent and gory and incredibly nutty making it one odd experience but an interesting one. I just wish it was more coherent in regards as to why the doctor's doing what he's doing, maybe I'm missing something, I don't know. This is one crazy movie, then again director David Blyth isn't above something completely crazy (check out Wound). I just wish it was better.

Vigil is a 1984 drama where a young girl affectionately called Toss (Fiona Kay) and her mother Elizabeth (Penelope Stewart) lose the patriarch of their family when we falls off a cliff while retrieving a sheep that had gotten stuck in a tenuous position. Left with over a thousand sheep to ready for market and no one to get them ready, not even her eccentric father (Bill Kerr), Elizabeth gets hired help in the form of Ethan (Frank Whitten). Both mother and daughter struggle with the arrival of Ethan but over time they come to accept him in their own way even when Toss makes a disturbing claim about something that happens during a camping trip the two have. Early minimalist drama from visually impressive director Vincent Ward (Map of the Human Heart, What Dreams May Come) which doesn't have too many visually impressive shots although there's a couple involving the cliff are quite jawdropping. Not a lot going on but the story develops quite nicely, OK movie but you'll definitely need patience to finish it. I don't know a lot about Australian actress Penelope Stewart; the only other movie I've seen her in was Boulevard Of Broken Dreams where she plays the wife of John Waters' pissed off with Hollywood screenwriter. On the commentary to that movie, I remember the director saying that she doesn't act any more and works as a secretary at a local film funding commission. That tells you how hard it is to stay in the acting business, particularly for women.

It's good to see these early New Zealand movies get a proper release. Death Warmed Up was mostly ignored with a tossed off DVD releases (possibly not in Australia though) until good old Umbrella come up with the goods. Great to see them back making decent previously unreleased movies available, which I've been capping lately. Another New Zealand movie from that period I recently capped includes Smash Palace and there's been some other Bluray releases like Sleeping Dogs. Hopefully there's some more, possibly Heart Of The Stag, just to rub it in that I waited over a year for the DVD to get under $20 and I still haven't gotten around to capping it yet.

Update for 28 April...

One more for the 90s weekend, today it's the 1993 erotic thriller Sliver, basically an attempt to cash in on the success of Sharon Stone (and writer Joe Eszterhas) in Basic Instinct and it shows as it's a mess of a movie. Shame really as it's directed by Australian director Phillip Noyce who came to the movie off the back of a few hits including Patriot Games and Dead Calm (and Blind Fury is a pretty decent movie too) but Sliver has the feeling that there was a lot of fiddling done along the way particularly the clumsy ending. The idea of a voyeur overlooking an entire building is an interesting idea but the murder mystery plot is an utter mess not helped by a massive rewrite after a poor screening which also changed the identity of the killer. The ending is an absolute stinker and the final line completely laughable followed by, you know what it is, the screen turning to black after someone presses a remote control at it. I read about the original ending and I've gotta admit, it's actually not bad although I can see why it didn't go over well with a testing audience. It definitely would have been better and more trickier than the ending as it stands.

Sadly, I found out the Bluray I had was the theatrical version, which is a minute shorter and that the uncut version isn't available on Bluray, only DVD. There's not much more to cap, a couple of slightly longer shots in the sex scene that don't really show much more and a couple of shots featuring better looks at the bodies of Polly Walker and Allison Mackie in the scenes below. Still, it's frustrating not to have the complete version. Considering most involved in Sliver seemed to have washed there hands of the movie, I seriously doubt we'll get an uncut Bluray and I'm not buying a DVD I'll never watch, so unless I can find it elsewhere, I'm afraid this is the best I can do at the moment.

Update for 26 April...

Been looking around at what I have and there's plenty of stuff just sitting there waiting for me to get around to capping it, so I decided to get rid of a bunch of DVDs of reduxes that I've wanted to do and today's the first example of it. Six movies in today's update but only one from the pre-johnny-moronic.com era. In some cases, the videos were already fine, but they were done before I started to closely edit videos so they some were just wasting time. In some cases, I hadn't even done videos as was the case for Vampires: Out For Blood, so they are on the site for the first time.

For every redux update over the coming weeks, I'm just going to clean out all the DVDs I have, which is about 40-50, including a number of older reduxes that have never appeared on the site. Going to try and do about 6-8 every week as they're relatively easy to do including the collages. Knowing my luck, HD versions of these movies will become available just to piss me off.

Update for 23 April...

London Fields is a noir thriller where dying American writer Samson Young (Billy Bob Thornton) house swaps with an English writer (Jason Isaacs) and moves into his swanky apartment. Samson gets introduced at a pub by local darts legend and degenerate Keith Talent (Jim Sturgess) who owns $70,000 to arch rival Chick Purchase (Johnny Depp) and introduces him to his friend Guy Clinch (Theo James). While at the bar, they are joined by a woman dressed in mourning clothes, Nicola Six (Amber Heard). Although she does not say who she is mourning, it becomes clear that it is her own death. All three men become entranced with Nicola in there own way and she has affairs with all three men. Samson, who had been suffering writer's block, sees Nicola dump a bunch of books which he recovers and reads, working out that Nicola is a clairvoyant but only in predicting people's deaths which included her own parents. But now that she's predicted her own death, she has no need for more predictions. The appearance of Nicola stirs Samson into writing again and he writes the story of her final days unfolding. As Nicola goes about fulfilling the varying fantasies of the three men with Keith just wanting to fuck a hot chick and Guy wanting to have sex with a virginal woman, Samson continues to write hoping like hell he can finish his last book before he or Nicola dies so he can find out who kills her. For a movie that's had a messy and delayed release, London Fields isn't that bad of a movie. It has an interesting story but struggles with whether it wants to be a comedy or a deadly serious mystery as it has an array of wild caricatures, Jim Sturgess is wildly over-the-top and Johnny Depp is no less subtle, but it also has a fairly straight lead performance from Billy Bob Thornton. It ends up being anti-climatic with an obvious death and killer and doesn't really explain why Nicola Six becomes involved with all three men other than perhaps to torture them or herself. London Fields ends up failing in what it seems to want to achieve but it's not a completely bad failure and you'll see a lot worse movies released this year.

London Fields was filmed in 2013 and sat on the shelf since 2015 (which it's listed as in the end credits) mainly because of issues between the director and the producers, which this movie seems to have dozens of. In late 2018, it finally got a cinema release with two different cuts released, a producer's cut and a director's cut. Apparently this is the director's cut and there's a listing of what's different between the two cuts on IMDB which seems to be a lot. Only the director's cut has got a home release so far, so maybe the producer's cut will get released and who knows, there might be more.

Update for 21 April...

You know what time of the week it is and here's five more 90s movies.

Hologram Man is an absolutely pure B-movie set in a future where criminals are sentenced to being holograms and are programmed to be better people. But when super criminal Slash comes up for parole after 5 years clearly not rehabilitated, a daring attempt to get his holographic form out is made and inadvertently makes him nearly invincible. But one cop can and will stop him but not before Slash causes so much mayhem and kills so many corrupt city officials. Haha, this plot almost makes you root for the super criminal as all the powers are incredibly corrupt and are making it hard for the average person to survive. It still has the cop saving the city from the super criminal but even the cop is sick of the super corrupt government he's working for. Incredibly silly movie but totally B-grade but I quite enjoyed it for what it was and it's quite wild almost but not completely anti-authoritarian plot.

Trojan War is basically an unsubtle 80 minute promotion for Trojan condoms packaged as a wacky mild teen sex comedy where some goober gets a chance with the girl of his dreams (Marley Shelton) but only with a condom which continues to be elusive. Meanwhile his best friend (Jennifer Love Hewitt) moons for him hoping the goober would looks at her in the same way. Tough gig being a nerd having to choose between Marley Shelton and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the poor sod. Fuck him and this movie, well apart from the ladies.

And a quick note on Gunshy, which I watched back in the day and gave another look, not a bad little noir thriller about a down-on-his-luck crime writer who gets involved with a small-time crook and his girlfriend. I've been getting this movie mixed up with the 2000 Liam Neeson/Sandra Bullock movie Gun Shy which has a similar plot, but I did remember bits and pieces of this movie while I was watching it.

Update for 20 April...

More reduxes this time two movies from the same filmmakers, a couple of B movies chock full of actors you've probably seen somewhere before. When I first capped these movies, I only gave these movies a cursory look, so for this update I had a much closer look. Found a brief role from an Australian actress (Bianca Chiminello) as one of the numerous strippers in Toxic. Lots of little scenes that I've stitched together as both movies are a bit of a mess, particularly Toxic. Also of note is that there are a number of scenes where actress take off their panties from under their skirts which gets to the point of fetish when comparing both movies. Sadly not much more than that is shown in either movies, just some token nudity.

Update for 15 April...

The 90s update seeps into Monday with a couple of Amityville movies from the early 90s. The Amityville Curse is about a couple who buy the old Amityville house as a bargain and with a group of friends, they begin to refurbish only for it to start making everyone crazy or dead, whichever's easier. Pretty standard stuff here and casting Kim Coates is a dead giveaway who the bad guy is going to be. Unessential at best. Amityville 1992: It's About Time, a terribly cumbersome title if ever there was one is about a man who cleans out the old Amityville house and brings back to his home a cuckoo clock that starts turning everyone crazy or dead, so more of the same, just in a different setting. For some reason, the cuckoo clock is able to both stop time and time travel which adds nothing to plot and the ending is a total cop out but it does have a decent kill involving an ice cream truck which also manages to be funny. But it's more of the same, just in a different setting and at least it has a bit of sexy stuff in this movie. And again, unessential but not as forgettable as Amityville Curse.

I'll admit to only having watched the 2005 The Amityville Horror remake before today but are all Amityville movies the fucking same?

Update for 14 April...

The 90s weekend update delivers three more movies.

Finally found a decent copy of Candyman 2: Farewell To The Flesh having already capped the original and the third movie previously. Not a bad follow up to the excellent original but clearly a step or two down with a more familiar stalk and slash plot. This time it's set in New Orleans at the house where the Candyman originated and has a decent body count and a surprisingly good ending in a collapsing house during a storm. A solid follow-up, such a shame the 3rd movie is a turgid piece of shit. Innocent Blood or as it was called when I saw it on VHS back in the day, A French Vampire in America, stars French actress Anne Parillaud off the back of her big hit La Femme Nikita and she's pretty good here with Anthony LaPaglia in this fairly decent comedy horror movie directed by John Landis. Another slight twist on the vampire genre, this time with the mafia thrown in with all hell breaking loose when Anne Parillaud's character attempts to drain mob boss Robert Loggia (who's clearly having a ball) of his blood but is interrupted and leaves him to become a vampire. Mayhem ensues. Movie also stars Tony Lip in a supporting role, who was one of the men the Oscar winning Green Book was about. Also saw this bit of info on IMDB about a new version of Innocent Blood that was recently released:

The version I capped from is 115 minutes long which is 3 minutes longer than the original release, so I'm assuming that this is the uncut release of the movie although I have no verification of this apart from the length.

Update for 13 April...

Three pre-johnny-moronic.com reduxes for today's update, meaning they appearing on the site for the first time. After capping Coyote Ugly the other day featuring Izabella Miko, I remembered that I had a copy of The Forsaken which I think features her only nude scenes. Interesting attempt at something slightly different in the vampire genre even if it ends up being similar to the John Carpenter movie from a few years previous, Vampires. Photographing Fairies was a very early series, first capped over 17 years years ago and finally making an appearance on this site. I remember capping it off a midday movie showing on VHS (yes, that long ago) and I hadn't seen it since, so I was surprised to come across a HD copy of the movie. Not a bad little movie about a man who watches his new wife die in tragic circumstances and years later discovers that he can make her materialise again thanks to a bunch of fairies that live at a tree.

Update for 11 April...

Was going to cap this back in December as I had the local version of the Coyote Ugly Bluray and then found out it was the heavily cut theatrical version and the uncut version with 6 or 7 extra minutes hasn't been released here (similar issues when I going to cap the movie Soul Survivors recently, what's up with that?). Finally found an uncut release so I can finally get around to finishing it off. The below videos are a mixture of the local Bluray (better quality) and the high quality download plus there's two different versions of the scene where Piper changes her clothes. There's also a deleted scene with a down blouse scene from Melanie Lynskey although it's only in DVD quality for some reason. This has been a mess of an update, glad to finally be rid of it to be honest...

Update for 7 April...

90s weekend kicks in once again with four movies in this update.

Never even heard of Immaculate Conception until this week, so I decided to give it a go and it's basically a Merchant-Ivory movie but with them not involved. Filmed entirely in Pakistan, it's about an American woman Hannah (Melissa Leo) who lives in Pakistan with her World Wildlife Fund working English husband Alistair (James Wilby) but is bored and desperate for a child that they can't seem to conceive. With a photographer friend Samira (Shabana Azmi), Hannah meets some eunuchs who tempt her with the promise of conception which she brushes off but eventually comes around to the idea. After getting her very reluctant husband to join her for a weekend away with the eunuchs, she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a boy but after the birth, they shun the eunuchs who want to help them have a healthy baby and it starts a series of events which put both Hannah and Alistair as well as their baby in harm's way. Not a bad movie but the warnings of dire consequences for the couple don't marry up with what happens in the end and the consequences seem rather mild for the family. Others though receive a much worse fate, particularly the bloke that messes with a rare book of Quran. Also the movie seems a bit more salacious than the usual Merchant-Ivory movie with a bit of sex and plenty of the movie involving the eunuchs, while the conception scene is very suggestive that all may not be what it seems. I've got to admit I'd haven't seen much of Melissa Leo before 21 Grams, not even Homicide: Life On The Streets, so it's seems a bit odd to see her in earlier stuff, well to me anyway.

I saw Eve of Destruction back in the day, a pretty straightforward killer robot goes haywire B-movie starring Dutch actress Renée Soutendijk in a rare foray into American movies and I'm surprised she wasn't in more American movies. She was recently briefly in the new Suspiria movie, but it's mostly Dutch stuff the rest of the time. Anyway, not a bad little time-killer hitting most of the usual tropes but is never boring. Also saw Full Eclipse back in the day, a werewolf movie with a slight twist that's not bad either even when it's premise gets very silly and runs out of steam. Sadly the quality of the copy I have isn't the greatest but it's in HD and I don't think we'll see a proper release as it's already pretty hard to find.

Update for 5 April...

Another couple of new movies including another new Australian movie. Some quick synopses:

Write When You Get Work is a drama about a small-time crook who used to go out with a girl (Rachel Keller) and they had a kid together but she gave it up for adoption and moved on with her life. But after the death of a mutual friend, the small-time crook sees the girl at the wake and wants her back in his life but she has a new life and a honest job as an admissions officer at a private school. While the small-time crook tries to win the girl over, he runs a scam involving one of the mums (Emily Mortimer) at the school which could be his big pay day. Not bad, interesting story and a pretty solid cast.

Burning Kiss is an Australian noir thriller set in Perth where a young man comes to the door of a former detective who is now wheelchair-bound with a piece of jewellery belonging to his missing/dead wife 6 years after she went missing. The detective is angry and believes that the young man killed his wife and with the help of his put-upon daughter (Alyson Walker), goes about finding out what happened to his wife and who killed her but why is the young man so willing to help out and be tortured by the detective. Trippy looking movie with bold and sexy visuals with a hint of a giallo movie about it but is let down by a ludicrous plot that gets more ridiculous by the minute. The actor playing the detective is actually pretty good and the movie has a lot going for it, such a shame about the central mystery plot. Never seen the very pretty Alyson Walker before but she's made a few movies in Canada recently so might be more to cap from her in the future.

Update for 4 April...

Some more new movies including a couple of newish New Zealand releases. Some quick synopses:

BOO! is a horror movie about a family who are sent a package on Halloween that they must pass along to another house but the father refuses to partake leaving the family at the mercy of a spirit that makes the family relive their most horrific moments. Not a lot happens and it isn't until the final moments that something really horrific happens so it takes 90 minutes to get there and it isn't worth the wait.

Durante La Tormenta is a Spanish supernatural thriller where during an electrical storm, a woman (Adriana Ugarte) finds an old cathode ray tube TV which she checks out and is able to see a kid who used to live in the house who died 30 years previously. She helps him avoid his fate, thereby changing history but by doing so, she changes her own history and now she isn't recognised by the people she knows and her daughter goes missing. She finds out that she has one chance to change everything back and she can do so with the help of the now grown kid that didn't die. Intriguing but confusing thriller, a bit like the movie Frequency but with more of a changing of history plot which becomes more confusing the more it's explained which isn't ideal.

The Rehearsal is a New Zealand drama about a young man starting at acting school who meets a girl (Ella Edward) on a bus and they fall for one another. At the same time, the young man is in an acting group that decides to dramatise a recent incident where a tennis coach has a relationship with a much younger girl and it turns out the much younger girl is the sister of his girlfriend which introduces a moral quandrary for the young man. Not bad but a lot more about the acting process than the moral quandary but it's good to see director Alison Maclean make her first movie since 1999's Jesus' Son. Her first movie Crush is an excellent movie.

The Breaker Upperers is a New Zealand comedy about a couple of best friends (Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami, also the writer/directors of the movie) who run a company that helps people break up with their significant other when they find it too hard or can't be bothered. But when the two fight about whether they should continue the business when someone they broke up tries to make sense of what happened, it threatens not just their business but their friendship. OK comedy probably not as funny as it should be but a silly premise that is milked for laughs and sometimes succeeds.

Update for 3 April...

A couple of new movies straight off iTunes.

The Pretend One is an Australian drama about Charlie (Geraldine Hakewill) who lives on a farm with her dad Roger (David Field) and her only friend in the world, Hugo (Michael Whalley) who is her imaginary friend all grown up. Things are going along as usual until a documentarian Guy (Benedict Wall) comes to town looking for farmers to interview about looking for love. Charlie is interested in Guy but Hugo becomes insanely jealous of this burgeoning relationship and being increasingly pushed aside by Charlie. In a miraculous twist, Hugo develops the ability to touch and he can now convince Charlie to be with him but Charlie has a yearning to finally leave the farm for the city and Guy may be her way out. OK fantastical love story that doesn't have much to it than the love triangle and a bit about her father working out his demons but it's fairly watchable thanks to Hakewill.

The Cleaning Lady is a horror thriller from the makers of Goddess Of Love about Alice (Alexis Kendra), a woman in a relationship with a married man Michael (Stelio Savante) that she desperately wants to get out of but she can't help herself. Needing to unclog a drain in her apartment, the building supervisor sends along Shelly (Rachel Alig), whose face is heavily scarred from a burn and Alice is very welcoming of her, offering her an off-the-books job cleaning her house a couple of times a week. While Shelly is cleaning her house, Michael asks Alice out again and she accepts but immediately regrets it and decides to take her mind off Michael by having dinner with Shelly and then taking her home although Shelly asks to be dropped off at a path well away from anywhere. Shelly's odd behaviour continues when she ethers Alice and makes a mask of her face to wear and then she increases her obsession with Alice. This comes to a head when Shelly ties up Alice and then ethers Michael and then forces Alice to kill Michael to get him out of her life and then promises Alice something better which may not be what you are thinking. Deliberately paced horror thriller that feels similar to Goddess Of Love pacing wise but has a far more conventional stalker thriller plot. Not bad but it's pacing makes it a much harder watch than it should and the sub-plot about how Shelly becomes who she is ends up being quite disturbing.

Update for 2 April...

A couple of new releases. Some quick synopses:

Chimera Strain is a thriller about a scientist who does everything including incredibly unethical things in a seemingly futile attempt to cure his dying wife and save his children who have inherited the cruel disorder from their mother. Pretty dark and disturbing thriller that always seems to be heading to an obvious conclusion and well, it does exactly that. Not a bad movie though.

Can't Take It Back is one of those social media horror thrillers where a dead/missing person haunts the people who taunted them to the point where they end up killing themselves in rather nasty ways. None of them are any good and a complete suspension of belief is needed to make any of work. This movie is no exception and we're going to keep getting these movies because they're easy to make. Damn it...
