Update for 31 March...

Quick updates from new movies. Some quick synopses:

Banana Split is a comedy drama where April (Hannah Marks) has been in a relationship with her friend Nick (Dylan Sprouse) for a couple of years but constant fighting leads them to split up. Nick moves on quickly with new girl in town Clara (Liana Liberato) and April hates her instantly but when they meet at a party, April and Clara hit it off and become friends while Clara doesn't tell Nick that this has happened. Their friendship blossoms but April still has a thing for Nick and he starts to get bored with April and then... OK teen movie but the trailer made heavy suggestions that April and Clara would get together and they absolutely don't.

Vivarium is a weird satire where a couple (Imogen Poots and Jesse Eisenberg) look to buy a house and come across a new estate being sold by a weird spruiker who takes them to the estate where every house is the same. They are shown the house and then the spruiker disappears and they try to leave the estate but there's no escape. They are forced to live in the house and are given a box of supplies every once in a while and then given a baby to look after who turns into a despicable piece of shit. They are in hell and they will try to find a way to escape, even if it kills them. Very odd movie that gets darker by the minute and that kid is super annoying, no wonder they keep threatening to kill it, if only to see if it will magically regenerate like everything else they destroy. It's a good movie but as I said, it gets more and more depressing the longer it goes and it's a good companion piece to the other movie both Poots and Eisenberg starred in together, The Art Of Self Defence.

Update for 30 March...

90s update continues into Monday and finishing off a request to do a couple of Cameron Diaz movies. Amazingly, I haven't seen There's Something About Mary since it was in cinemas and despite the million and one TV airings. It's still a pretty funny movie, still pretty politically incorrect although the Farrelly brothers are usually fairly respectful in that department but having said that, the stalker heavy plot hasn't aged well. I capped this from the extended version and it's obvious where some of the additions are because they are completely unnecessary, a couple of additions make no sense whatsoever and should've been left out. And the first date breast touching scene (see below) is a very awkward scene. Usually there's a good reason as to why scenes are left on the cutting room floor and the extended edition is proof of that.

Update for 29 March...

90s update once more. Sigh, if Mad Dog Time (it was called Trigger Happy in Australia) wasn't bad enough, Larry Bishop got another script made and the result is Underworld, an incredibly annoying movie with so much talking about annoying minutiae, corny jokes (especially everyone saying can I be Frank to a character named Frank, Jesus Christ...) and when there wasn't any more talking, someone would shoot up the place or just shoot someone who turns up, usually for no reason including someone who was a vegetative state for years. Oh and that scene that goes on for hours about show tunes, fucking hell. Larry Bishop was an incredibly low rent Tarantino knock-off who used his father's name to get his piss poor scripts made and to rub salt into that wound, Tarantino used his pull to get made the utterly forgettable Hell Ride for him. Apparently he has another movie in the works, heaven help us all...

The Winner is another Tarantino knock-off, where the only thing notable is the terrible hair going on from male actors. Next...

Never heard of Speed Of Life and it's a blur of a movie, basically Scott Caan is a college student who looking after his mostly bedridden father and then he meets a rich artist (Mia Kirshner) who is slumming it for drugs and they sort of have a relationship mostly revolving around drugs while his father plays up when he's not around. Not much more than that and there's little coherent plot hence why it feels like a blur plus it has that nothing matters 90s feel that's utterly depressing.

Update for 22 March...

90s weekend update once more.

Bank Robber is a strange movie that is hard to classify and that's what leads to it being a fairly poor movie. Basically, a gentleman bank robber (Patrick Dempsey) robs a bank to satisfy his girlfriend (Olivia D'Abo) but takes off his kerchief in front of a camera and is instantly identified. Back in his hotel room, everyone knows where he is and rip him off while the clueless police (Forest Whitaker and Judge Reinhold) drive around the city pontificating about the bank robber. The bank robber hires an call girl (Lisa Bonet) and they fall for one another. That's pretty much it, the movie doesn't make a lot of sense and just goes from scene to dream scene with little connection between any and because none of it is all that interesting, the movie is fairly boring for the most part. Bank Robber seems like it's supposed to be a satire, but there's little comedy and the ending is incredibly hacky. This is a bad bad movie but at least it has a fair bit of nudity from Lisa Bonet and Olivia D'Abo.

Update for 16 March...

Something slightly different for the continuation of the 90s weekend. Been collecting 90s movies on DVD for a few years (from 2017 according to when I ripped them) and they've just been sitting on my hard drive waiting for me to get around to capping them or get superseded by a HD version. Well I can't wait around forever for a HD copy to become available and I always need the hard drive space so it's time to get rid of them.

I even watched most of them too...

Boys is a lost movie in the Winona Ryder filmography but she's not really the lead in this movie despite the promotion, it's Lukas Haas as a private school boy who discovers Winona unconscious after a fall from a horse and helps nurse her back to health contravening so many school rules in the process while falling in love with her but she hides a secret from the night before that offers a major complication. OK movie but I can see why it's pretty much forgotten.

Ruby is about what led club owner Jack Ruby to become involved in the JFK assassination and if any of this presented in the movie is true and some of it probably is, then how did Ruby not think any of this was nuts before he shot dead Oswald? Wild movie, never heard of it before watching it and glad I did because it's a wild addition to the JFK assassination genre. Danny Aiello is pretty damn good here as Ruby and blonde Sherilyn Fenn is always the best Sherilyn Fenn (see Two Moon Junction), no matter how good her brunette nude scenes are (see Meridan, Boxing Helena).

Lookin' Italian is a nutty movie with Matt Le Blanc as the most Italian guy ever pulling ever chick under the sun (including a pre-Wild Things Denise Richards) that inexplicably has a third act where Le Blanc gets involved with a black woman who is killed in a drive-by shooting as he is dropping her off and then he and his friends exact revenge against the gang in one of the most ridiculous endings to a movie I've ever seen and doesn't belong in this movie.

I was always led to believe that Destiny Turns On The Radio was a real shitty movie and well it's a silly movie that is very much of the period, part Tarantino movie (who has a role as the title character, thankfully not asked to do too much acting), part indie black comedy that doesn't really work. It's not a terrible movie but it's not a good movie either and one of two movies in this update that has Jim Belushi as his quintessential 90s arsehole character, the other being Living In Peril.

Should've capped Divorcing Jack ages ago as it features Rachel Griffiths in a sexy scene and I did a large update of a number of her overseas movies a while back but completely forgot I had this movie. Movie also features Laura Fraser, who I was a big fan of back in the day including from Virtual Sexuality.

Update for 10 March...

Just some quick stuff from a bunch of Australian movies I finally gotten around to watching/capping. Some quick synopses:

Don't Show Mother is a thriller where a young man lives with his mother and it's been a year since his father went missing/actually was killed by the young man. Slowly but surely, his life starts to unravel and his murderous tendencies begin to take over. Ugly movie that seems to be building for something big but only ends with the usual ugliness. Errr...

The Suicide Theory is a thriller where a disfigured man hires a hitman to kill him except there's one big issue with that. He can't be killed. The disfigured man has a theory he wants to try out to finally die and over time they become friends despite the hitman killing him multiple times. It turns out that there's a series of incidents that connect the two and that the hitman is the key to killing the disfigured man, just not in the way he expected. A lot going on in this movie and has fairly intriguing premise that is pulls off quite well. A decent surprise.

Good Luck With That is a very low budget stunt action comedy in the vein of Jackie Chan movies where a man is set a series of task to help save his kidnapped wife from some evil dude. Limited and amateurish but not without it's charm and a decent stunt or two plus a 70 minute run time helps.

Update for 8 March...

90s weekend update with a couple of thrillers.

On The Border is a heist noir thriller, very much a B-movie but a pretty solid one which may have been even better if it didn't turn into a twist-a-thon with so many twists it's impossible to keep up. There's a bit of sex, a bit of nasty violence and every character is just sleazy as can be, except for Casper Van Dien, who's the necessary good guy robber. Interesting that the movie goes out of it's way to say that Danish actress Camilla Overbye Roos is Danish but never says anything about Bryan Brown being Bryan Brown, the most Australian accent ever. Brown's pretty good too as a nasty piece of shit and the real surprise packet is quintessential 90s B-vixen Rochelle Swanson playing a Mexican woman who does the dirty on everyone. She's very good in a role that's a bit more meatier than her usual sexpot roles, not that she doesn't have a few sexy scenes throughout. Worth a look if you're into violent, sweaty heist/noir thrillers.

The Maddening is well, a maddening silly little thriller where Burt Reynolds and Angie Dickinson play a couple of nutters who lock up Mia Sara and her daughter in their house and think that she is their long lost daughter. The film is nutty enough that it could play a B-grade diversion but there's too much silliness to be much good. Strangely, it's directed by Danny Huston, who's much better known as a character actor in a career arc not too dissimilar from his father John Huston, although he directed much better movies than this. And going by his filmography, he stopped directing and started acting soon after this movie. Ouch! But, as I said, it's not all bad, Burt Reynolds starts off really well until he has to go nutty and just isn't very good at playing nutty. The principal from Billy Madison is the detective looking for Mia Sara and he plays it pretty much as if he's same character from Billy Madison which is amusing until he dies horribly. And there's some little comic and creepy touches throughout that do work, but not enough. Both Burt and Angie were at the nadir of their careers by this stage, at least Burt got Boogie Nights a year later.

Update for 1 March...

90s weekend yet again. Never seen Feeling Minnesota before and this maybe the most 90s movie ever. And it starts early with Keanu Reeves' character's name, Jjaks, baffling reason for it. The plot goes for broad violent black comedy and ends up just being cruel and nasty, usually for no reason. It starts badly where Cameron Diaz's character is forced into marriage with Vincent D'Onofrio and it's just non-stop hatefulness from then on, ramping it up until a second act twist gets incredibly cruel only for the final act to get very silly. I usually don't have a problem with hateful movies but this one just has no redemptive features. Traveller is a pretty decent movie about a group of Irish travellers who work cons on unsuspecting folk. Then when the son (Mark Wahlberg) of one of the travellers got away comes back and wants to become one of them, he gets taken under the wing of one of the better scammers.
