Redux Friday for 28 September...

Collages and videos from Rise: Blood Hunter are now available here.

In this insanely ridiculous pursuit to upgrade everything I've done to the highest quality available, here comes another series, this time from the vampire thriller Rise: Blood Hunter. Might be another redux tomorrow if I can find the time.

Australian Classics for 26 September...

It's actually been a few weeks since I've done an Australian Classics series, so here we go again...

The Year My Voice Broke is a coming of age drama from writer-director John Duigan (whose films have been popping up here lately, including his most recent Careless Love). Danny (Noah Taylor) and Freya (Loene Carmen) are two young best friends growing up in a small country town in the early 60s. Danny has always had a crush on Freya and she knows it, but she doesn't like him in that way. Things are about to change for the both of them when hyperactive and thuggish rugby full back Trevor (Ben Mendelsohn) comes along and takes a shine to Freya and she reciprocates. But, both Freya and Trevor's relationship is doomed because of who they are and because of the well-known 'secret' of who Freya's real mother is. Trevor is into racing cars around the race track including stealing cars and the local police are always after him. While Danny is trying to get his head around the relationship, Freya becomes pregnant, but that isn't the last of the complications and as their relationship was doomed from the beginning, it is going to end in tragedy. I think I've mentioned it here before (surely I have), but this is one of my favourite Australian films ever and has been since I first saw it over 20 years ago as a kid. Hell, I haven't seen it since I had to do an exam essay on the film in final year, so it's been a while since I've watched it. The Year My Voice Broke is still as good as I remember it being and the remembrance of one of my first crushes being on Loene Carmen from this movie hasn't wavered. Still a great film and the DVD release of it is quite good for the interviews and commentary.

There was a follow-up to this film called Flirting, which I've never actually seen and strangely doesn't look like it's ever been released on DVD here in Australia. There are overseas releases, so I'll have to look into that. Also, as you will know if you follow the site, I've capped a few John Duigan films recently and it looks like the good folk at Umbrella are releasing a few of his films on DVD for the first time. Mouth to Mouth has already featured here, while Winter of Our Dreams and One Night Stand are mooted as coming soon which will be great. And here's hoping for a Sirens Bluray!

Update for 25 September...

A quick series from a new Australian film, well a co-production with Singapore.

Bait is a thriller set in a supermarket and adjoining car park. A year ago, Josh (Xavier Samuel) and Tina (Sharni Vinson) were a couple, but Tina's brother is eaten by a shark just before Josh can save him. Now they are not together, and they meet each other in a supermarket and Tina has a new Singaporean boyfriend. Meanwhile, Jaimie (Phoebe Tonkin) is arrested for shoplifting and impressing her boyfriend (Alex Russell from Chronicle) and the cop assigned to charge her is her dad (Martin Sacks). Also, Doyle (Julian McMahon) is forced into robbing the supermarket by Kirby (Dan Wyllie) and gets into a shoot out with Jaimie's dad and someone gets killed. While Kyle (Lincoln Lewis) and Heather (Cariba Heine) are having relationship issues in the car park. Then a freak tsunami hits and completely floods the supermarket and car park. But, that's the least of their problems. Two sharks have wandered in and are hungry for human flesh. So, who lives? Who dies? You know the drill. While too much is clearly going on in the beginning, once the film settles down to some shark chomping action, the film is actually OK, albeit for some truly awful stereotypical characters and dicey shark animation. But, I liked this more than last year's pissweak Shark Night, so that's something I s'pose.

And I thought this film was directed by Russell Mulcahy, but it seems he only wrote it. It's directed by Kimble Rendall, and I only say this because his only other film is possibly the worst Australian film ever in the Molly Ringwald-Jessica Napier 2000 slasher horror disaster Cut. So, they've let him back in the building, have they...

As promised another couple of HD redux series.

Redux Friday for 21 September...

Collages and videos from Pulse now available here.

A couple of quick HD redux series, mainly done just to get them off the hard drive. The Human Traffic redux was always in line to be done as I first capped it in late 2002, so 10 years later, a high quality redo was necessary. The source for Human Traffic isn't great, mind you, having a look at the DVD, the image is very similar, so it's probably the best it's going to be. Also, the Pulse Bluray has a different aspect ratio to the DVD, but there's no really big difference.

Another couple of HD redux series tomorrow.

Update for 19 September...

A quick update from a new-ish Australian film.

Here I Am is a drama set in Adelaide about Karen (Shai Pittman), who has just been released from prison and attempts to start again. And it starts badly when she has sex with a man she meets at a pub and is woken up in a hotel room by the cleaning staff, one of which is her mother. Karen finally gets to a Aboriginal woman halfway house where she begins to make amends, starting with getting a job and then trying to see her daughter, which her mother refuses. She also interacts with the other members of the halfway house and meets a man and falls for him. After a while, her mother relents and lets her see her daughter in a supervised visit, but it goes wrong and it seems that Karen just can't do anything right. It's going to be a long journey back. Solid, no frills drama with a great lead performance from Shai and solid back up from the supporting cast.

Update for 13 September...

Another new Australian film today.

Careless Love is a drama about Linh (Nammi Le), a university student in Sydney who seems very studeous, but in fact hides a secret. Three nights a week, she is an escort. Linh is doing this because her family is having problems paying the mortgage for their house since her father lost her job. Over time she develops various relationships with men, including Luke (Peter O'Brien), an American 'art dealer' who pays for an extra session outside of her work time and Seb (Hugo Johnstone-Burt), who she tries to avoid as he seems to want more. Her flatmate Carol (Penny McNamee) introduces her to Jack (Andrew Hazzard) and Linh falls in love with him, so much so that they move in together. But, Linh still has that secret and it's about to blow up big time, even when she quits escorting when her father gets a job. And the fallout it going to be big. Solid, if unspectacular drama from director John Duigan (whose films feature regularly here including recently Mouth To Mouth). Takes a while to get going, its second half is far more interesting than its first half, but is driven by a pretty good lead performance by Nammi Le and a pretty cheeky one from Ivy Mak as her fellow escort.

Update for 12 September...

Just a quickie today as there's not a lot to work with. More for the completist in me...

Wish You Were Here is a drama about a married couple Dave (Joel Edgerton) and Alice (Felicity Price) who have come back from a trip to Cambodia, but have left behind Alice's sister Steph (Teresa Palmer) as she is desperately looking for her missing boyfriend Jeremy (Antony Starr). Over the film, we are shown flashbacks from the Cambodian holiday while back in Sydney, Dave and Alice attempt to get on with their lives while trying to help local authorities in their enquiries. But things are off. It starts when Steph finally arrives back in Sydney and their are hush arguments and emails happening between Dave and Steph as they seem to have been up to something. Also, Dave seems to have much to hide and feels that he is being followed. Authorities also suspect that Dave knows more than he's telling. Alice goes about finding her own answers, attempting to interact with Jeremy's family, but when she finds out about Dave and Steph, things come to a head and the terrible truth in unveiled. There's potentially a good story here, but between Dave's sheepish behaviour about the whole issue and Alice becoming incredibly shrewish and annoying the longer the film goes, it stifles the story. In fact, finding out what really happened to Jeremy all seems to be moot to the whole story, so when the shocking truth is unveiled, it doesn't seem as important as it should be. Hmm...

Update for 10 September...

You mean there's a film with two Australian actresses that is not an Australian film? Well, I never...

Generation Um... is a um, drama about, um, well, not much happens, so you'll have to bear with me. John (Keanu Reeves) is an amiable layabout with not much going on, but it seems to involve two damaged young women, Mia (Adelaide Clemens) and Violet (Bojana Novakovic). They seem to be close friends, but as the day progresses and Mia and Violet speak about their lives and their loves (or lack thereof) to John, who is filming them with a stolen camera, we begin to learn more about each and eventually, how they are connected. As I said earlier, this film is hard to describe and doesn't seem like much and goes along at a snail's pace, but I must say that I was never bored by it. While Keanu's character is basically an interviewer of the girls, both Adelaide and Bojana give great life to their 'far more complex than they seem' characters. Not for those looking for action, but not a bad film by any means.

I bought the DVD of this film from Thailand as it doesn't seem to be available anywhere else (well except online, well it wasn't when I bought it, but was during transit...). So, I'm doubting a Bluray release. As a fair chunk of the film is taken from a character's filming it on a video camera, the quality isn't fantastic, but is fine. But, I've seen worse, believe you me.

Redux Friday bleeds into Saturday again...

Yesterday, I mused that Virtual Sexuality was 13 years old. Well, so is today's redux, Drive Me Crazy. Another nothing special high school prom film, although I will say that this film at least attempts to bring in something a little different. Inevitably, it all ends the same, so whatever... I must say that the way that these prom films end, it seriously sucks to be a cool kid. Surely reality has them nailing the hottest girl in school while the nerdy cool kid gets his head dunked in the toilet. That's if the nerdy cool kid even went to the prom...

Redux Friday heads into a virtual reality...

Geez, Virtual Sexuality is really 13 years old. Seems like an eternity ago, particularly rewatching for the first time since I capped it in 2002. I hadn't realised how much I've forgotten about this film, as Virtual Sexuality is a predictably terrible film which relies on a concept that Laura Fraser's character created a male doppelganger of her perfect man, based on herself. Which is surely some sort of incest if they get together? Thankfully they don't. Also, how come there was no concern from the nerdy guy for Laura Fraser's character when the doppelganger convinces him that he was her. Whatever...

Anyway, I've rewatched a few of these high school films recently (Drive Me Crazy, Whatever It Takes etc.) getting them ready for a redux and the lead characters are all these nice, interesting people who just want to be vapid drips, but no more so than Laura Fraser's dreadfully vapid character in Virtual Sexuality. Bah, the character deserves to loses her virginity in a drunken 10 second 'dash for cash' in a grimy laneway with some sleaze with the pleasure of being thrown up on after the deed is done. Oh, and although this wouldn't have happened back then, it should be filmed by the bloke's mates on his phone and uploaded to one of those porno tube site for all eternity. (Shit, that's just vindictive. Where did that come from..?)

Well, at least Laura Fraser looks pretty damn good. It was the first film I ever saw her in and I've capped her a number of time since. There's even one of those long pan collages made from numerous caps below. Shit, was this really made 13 years ago?

Australian Classics for 3 September...

You know I like Jennie Jacques, you know I do.

Truth or Dare is a revenge thriller that follows a group of young kids who are invited to a party by outcast Felix at his family palatial mansion. But, when they get there, they are told to go to the shack out the back where they are greeted by Felix's military brother Justin. They start to party and then have a game of Truth or Dare and when Justin is picked, he announces that Felix is hung himself and wants to get to the bottom of why Felix did it, any which way he can, which is basically just torture them. This is going to be a long night with a few surprises, a few deaths and a rather predictable outcome. Yeah, nothing special here, although I do like it when a character gets to do a third act personality change to take charge of the situation, but that's not enough to save this rather forgettable film.

Australian Classics for 3 September...

A nice big dump of Australian Classics today as I watched a few movies that only had a little bit to capture.

The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith is a 1978 drama set in the late 1800s that focuses on half caste Aborigine Jimmie Blacksmith (Tommy Lewis, who was in last week's Australian Classic) who is brought up by the local reverend (Jack Thompson) in his orphanage. Once he becomes old enough, Jimmie sets off into the world, taking jobs where he can find them, but the racism against Aborigines is shocking and Jimmie has it hard, but fights on nonetheless. After meeting a white woman Gilda Marshall (Angela Punch McGregor) at a new job, he gets her pregnant and is happy to be a father and maybe he might be accepted more by the community. He is for a while, even given land and his own place for he and Gilda, but when his brother and uncles join him on the land, Jimmie's boss sees red and bans Jimmie and Gilda from getting supplies. They also offer Gilda a way out by leaving Jimmie and this sets Jimmie off and after a confrontation with his boss goes wrong, Jimmie goes berserk and with the help of his uncle, he takes revenge on the women of the house, killing 4 and seriously injuring one other. On the run with his brother, Jimmie decides to take revenge on everyone who wronged him to the point where he seems like a 'devil' to his brother. But, the posse are not far behind and are bloodthirsty in their revenge. Tough, uncompromising drama based on the book by Thomas Keneally that is a hard watch, even today. Jimmie is a likeable lad and the racism against him is very ugly but his crimes are brutal and are of the worse kind. On the other hand, his pursuers are not exactly a likeable lot and are looking for any excuse to kill a black man. There's no winners here and under the direction of Fred Schepisi, this is an expertly told story that is well worth a look.

Playing Beatie Bow is a 1986 family drama that follow Abigail Kirk (Imogen Annesley. God damn Imogen Annesley), a teenage girl struggling in the middle of her parent's problems. Her sister Natalie plays a game called Beatie Bow named after a mysterious girl (Mouche Phillips) who watches on. One day, Abigail follows Beatie and when she touches her, she is magically transported back to 1873 with no way of going back. Beatie takes Abigail back to her family, where after an accident, they nurse her back to health. But, there is a reason for Abigail to be here. It turns out that Beatie's grandmother has the power of healing and to see into the future and that these powers have been waning and it has been foretold that 'The Stranger' will come and improve those powers. Meanwhile, Beatie's sister Dovey (Nikki Coghill) is to be married to Judah (Peter Phelps), but after Judah saves Abigail from sex traders, she falls for him, jeopardising her future. Can she make it back to her time? Strange family film that I remember being a big deal when I was kid, well, more the book than the film, as I had to read it for school (snore...). They don't make family films like this anymore, now they are all cuddly or the other extreme, fairly violent and righteous. Playing Beatie Bow is a fun film, not great, but worth a look, mainly for Imogen Annesley, man those were the days alright.

Roadgames is a 1980 thriller from director Richard Franklin (The True Story of Eskimo Nell, Patrick, later Psycho 2, Hotel Sorrento, Brilliant Lies and Visitors) about a truck driver Quid (Stacy Keach) who has to drive a load of meat from Melbourne to Perth. Along the way, he gets a feeling he might of come across a murder after hearing news on the radio. After picking up a woman from the side of the road, he takes a short cut and spots who could be the killer possibly burying something. This starts a cat and mouse chase on the way to Perth that builds momentum when another hitchhiker Quid picks up who he labels 'Hitch' (Jamie Lee Curtis) is kidnapped by the possible killer. He's also a pretty good match for the killer himself. Can Quid save Hitch in time? Can he get the load to Perth in time? A pretty good Hitchcockian thriller that has some pretty tense scenes and some pretty good set pieces. And Keach is pretty damn good as a rambling, barely sane driver trying to alleviate the boredom of driving cross country.

Country Life is 1994 period drama about, yeah, fucked if I know. I did watch the film a while back, but I can't remember a thing about it. In fact, the DVD comes with a documentary by the director of Country Life about his personal experiences in surfing and the beach that was pretty darn good, even though I'm no fan of surfing or the beach. The Craic is a comedy about two Irishmen Fergus (Jimeoin) and Wesley (Alan McKee), who flee to Melbourne when a IRA leader threatens to kill them. Now, they have overstayed their visas and living in a share house dodging immigration officials. Fergus decides that he's looking for love, so he goes on a dating game show and wins with the prize being a trip to the Gold Coast with the woman who chose him. But immigration is one his tail and Fergus narrowly escapes. He calls up Wesley to join him in Queensland, which he does and they take work picking fruit. Meanwhile, the IRA leader rats out a whole heap of people, including Fergus and Wesley and gets taken to Queensland under Witness Protection. And then he spots the two and so do the cops looking after the IRA leader. Now that everyone wants Fergus and Wesley, will they get away. A light comedy if ever there was one that is probably better served for Jimeoin fans as the laughs are pretty light on and the story meanders all over the place. A pretty forgettable film really, not as forgettable as Country Life obviously...

Father is a 1990 drama where the Winton family are living a pretty good life in Melbourne. This gets shaken up when on a tabloid current affairs program, the grandfather Joe (Max von Sydow) is accused of being a sadistic Nazi officer by Iya Zetnick (Julia Blake). Joe maintains his innocence and has the support of his daughter Anne (Carol Drinkwater) even when charged with war crimes. When Joe gets off the charge, Iya decides to take matters into her own hands and it's going to end in tragedy for someone. A solid, if predictable drama with solid performances, but the stand out is British actress Carol Drinkwater who is excellent as she is caught in a quandary.

Playing for Charlie is a 2008, but released 2010 drama about talented rugby union player Tony (Jared Daperis) who is a chance to play for the state of Victoria. But, Tony has a major problem. He has to look after his baby sister because his MS suffering mother (New Zealand actress Jodie Rimmer) works nights, but that is when the Victorian squad trains. It's hard enough to make the team if you are not from a private school, but having to look after his sister is a bridge too far. But, he gives it a red hot go with the help of his shonky half brother and his school coach (Shane Connor) who desperately tries to get him in the squad. A pretty darn good little drama, particularly featuring a sport that is a poor cousin in Victoria to Aussie Rules and has some pretty solid performance from all. Well worth a look and if you do, look out for a young Rhiannon Fish before Home and Away.
