Redux Friday beats a dead horse...

Another redone series from an Australian film, this time it's Let Me Not, a film that I didn't completely cap the first time because the files bizarrely corrupted.

Let Me Not is another low budget Australian film set in Melbourne about a 16 year-old who works as a stripper at night and goes to school by day. One night, an architect watches her at the strip club then he is commissioned to do some work at her school. He becomes interested in her and eventually they fall in love and such. Some have called it the worst Australian film ever, but I tend to disagree, it's not good and is a little clunky, but there's enough in the central relationship for it to scrape by... just. And any film that has a scene at the now gone Lumiere Cinemas, bringing back many a good memory for me, is worth an extra point. And although it has a 2007 release date, going by the Sex and Lucia poster on the wall, that scene would have had to been filmed in mid 2003, that's when I saw that film there.

Update for 24 June...

A quick update today from a low budget Australian film.

Vigilante is a film very much of it's title. A balaclava wearing man in black stalks the streets putting criminals and layabouts in their place. Previously, a self-made millionaire has just proposed to his girlfriend and celebrates with a late night picnic at a park (really, late at night?). They are met by a bunch of hooligans who decide to attack them, beating the man to an inch of his life and killing (and possibly raping) the woman (Neighbours starlet Margot Robbie in a brief role). Encouraged by some kid (and his love of The Punisher!) and his physical therapist/martial arts instructor to get revenge on society, he becomes the man in black. And he ultimately gets his revenge on his attackers one of whom is entirely and unrealistically psychotic. If you get over the quite poor acting including the lead's Christian Bale as Batman impersonation, there's some solid action stuff, but really, it's rather forgettable including the quite ludicrous Punisher ripoff scenes.

The filmmakers have since gone onto make I.C.U, which looks interesting although I'm expecting a similar aesthetic and with plenty of sexy stuff from Margot Robbie, it might definitely be worth a look at the very least. But, no release date as yet.

Redux Friday replicates itself...

A couple of redos today from an Italian original and it's American remake.

There is very little difference between the two versions of The Last Kiss, in fact just from the videos below, you can see how similar they actually are. Both films are about a couple who are about to have a baby and the boyfriend is getting serious cold feet about committing to the relationship. When he meets a sexy young woman (Martina Stella in the Italian version, Rachel Bilson in the Hollywood version) at a friend's wedding those commitment issues are further developed. Also, the boyfriends friends are having their own relationship issues and decides to go on a road trip to get away from these issues. Both versions are actually quite good with the Italian version strengthened by superior actors (particularly Giovanna Mezzogiorno who absolutely runs rings around Jacinta Barrett in the pregnant girlfriend role). Actually, I'm surprised that Hollywood remade the film mainly because the story is a lot more dense than the usual Hollywood relationship drama and as I said above the Hollywood version stays pretty true to the original.

I'm actually not that unhappy about my previous versions of the Hollywood Last Kiss collages, maybe a little too obsessive, but you can find them here. The HD version allows me to lighten the Rachel Bilson sex scene and her magnificent nippleless breasts.

And I should mention Martina Stella, I mean she is a real hottie.

Update for 13 June...

Another quick series today.

The Limits of Control, directed by Jim Jarmusch, is a typical Jim Jarmusch film. An international man of mystery goes to Madrid becuase 'diamonds are a girl's best friend' which means he's getting diamonds for someone. But, to get them, he meets several people at a cafe where he drinks 2 espressos and exchanges matchboxes. At his hotel, he is kept company by a naked woman, who is waiting for something. And he is constantly asked whether he speaks Spanish before going into sort of conversations in English. Yeah, it's offbeat (Bill Murray's cameo is the most normal part of the film and even that's bizarre) and I usually like a Jarmusch film, but I'm a bit indifferent to this one. It has some very interesting moments, but for the most part it meanders along, waiting for something to happen, even more than the usual Jarmusch film.

Paz de la Huerta plays the naked woman. And yes, I like your raincoat...

Update for 10 June...

Quick series today.

Remember Me is a romantic drama set in the summer of 2001 where a hotheaded young man is dared to go out with a fellow NYU student byhis friend/roommate, who knows that she is the daughter of the cop that bashed the hotheaded young man. She reluctantly goes out with him, but after their first date, they hit it off, but she gets drunk and falls asleep at the man's place meaning she was late home. Her father disapproves of this and hits her, so she leaves home and stays with the hothead. Their relationship develops as she is introduced to his quite diverse family. Starts and ends with scenes that are highly manipulative and to be honest don't make the film all that endearing and are clearly there to get a response. The rest of the film is a solid romantic drama and doesn't need the bookend scenes. Shame really...

I'm throwing out a couple of caps in which Emilie might show a nipple during the sex scene. I'm unsure because the scene is extremely dim. Thought I'd throw it up all the same...

Australian Classics for 8 June...

Back with the so-called Australian classics today.

Shot of Love (or Dope depending on where you live) was made in 2003 and released in 2006, so 'classic' might be pushing it, anyway this Adelaide set film is set during the high profile trial of two cops who are accused of shooting an Aboriginal man and star footballer and this is fascinating the city. A woman is on a desperate search for love and may have found the one in an Aboriginal man (not the same as above) who is good friends with her best friend and both may also be involved in the shooting. There is also a pusher who wants to go up in the world and steals a fair amount of drugs to help out his junkie girlfriend and friend and this triggers a couple of thugs who will do anything to get it back. This is a highly ambitious film that is about addiction (drugs, love, TV, criminal trials) that is for the most part very good but is let down by the Tarantino-esque plot strand which seems out of place and has an excellent lead performance from Anastasia Seis who according to IMDB has only been in one film, this film, which is an absolute shame because she is superb here. But, good luck finding the film, it ain't an easy find...

Life is a 1995 film about life in the AIDS division of a prison and like any good prison drama it's hardcore and pretty full on. Starring a bunch of pretty good character actors, it focuses on a prisoner who has newly discovered AIDS and has to come to terms with this as he is transferred to the AIDS ward which is like a foreign world to this hard man. He strikes up a friendship with his cellmate who is dying while remembering his life on the outside including a relationship with a stripper. Pretty much a forgotten Australian film, this low budget drama is stagey (it's based on a play) but a pretty decent film nonetheless.

Lover Boy is a 60 minute drama directed by Geoffrey Wright, the director of Romper Stomper, Metal Skin and Macbeth about a relationship between a 42 year-old woman and a 16 year-old boy which starts when he begins mowing her lawn. As with all Geoffrey Wright films there is a hard edge and the usual devastating ending and remnants of his later films can be found here.

Update for 6 June...

I have a strange affinity with the Wild Things films. I don't know why I'm attracted to them (apart from the obvious) as I absolutely abhorred the first film and hated the second film even more (a recent rewatching confirmed that to me). I didn't mind the third one, but it is more of the same. The fourth one takes the exact same formula and then even moreso than the other 3, doesn't give a shit about anything like plot continuity, decent timelines or anything like motive (Mind you, motive was never a problem in any of the other either). Basically with a Wild Things movie, don't try and work it out because you will be wrong. None of them have given a shit about clues or people actually doing a thing with any meaning, it's just a bunch of shit put together where everyone double crosses everyone on a flip of a coin and if you want proof of this, just watch the end credits.

I could talk about how the whole film seems to take place over a week, the fact that these people go to high school (for the most pointless of scenes ever), but are clearly doing things as if they are 20 somethings. All I will say is forget about the lead characters in this film because they don't matter in the end. It's all about the minor characters, which makes the film even more baffling in the end. The Wild Things series has run out of puff and should probably be left alone after this mess of the film.

And the foursome... Well, it's great to see a cheeky play on a tired conceit, but the word tired does see to be the right word for it.
