Update for 28 November...

Easy A is a teen comedy about a Californian high school girl Olive (Emma Stone) who makes up a lie that she is going out with a boy so that she can skip camping with her friend (Aly Michalka) and her weird hippy parents. First off, she tells her friend that she lost her virginity to this imaginary boyfriend, which is overhead by the head of the religious clique (Amanda Bynes), who spreads the lie through the school. People begin to look at her differently, which is further enhanced when she agrees to help out her gay friend for a small fee by mock having sex with him at a party to fool everyone that he is straight so that he is not bullied anymore. This sets off a chain of events that includes being known as someone who has sex for payment (which she isn't), so she plays this up, deliberately ostracising herself as an pretend floozy, ala The Scarlet Letter. But, things are about to get a whole lot worse as a series of lies that spiral out of control and cause Olive to be a social outcast. Easy A takes a lot of it's cues from 80s teen comedies, which isn't a bad thing. Hell, the lead role could easily been written for Molly Ringwald. Emma Stone does a marvelous job as Olive, a surprisingly complex role and this film is highly watchable, better than most Hollywood teen films. I really enjoyed the film.

Update for 25 November...

More Aussie women from overseas movies today. Thought it was about time I added Mia Wasikowska to the site, although technically she appeared in a few raw caps from Suburban Mayhem. And I'm still umming and ahhing about doing collages from Alice in Wonderland...

That Evening Sun is about an old man in a retirement home who wanders off back to his old house, only to find that it has been rented out to a couple who have a teenage daughter by his big city lawyer son. Stubborn and cantankerous to the very end, the old man refuses to budge and moves into the shed which causes the man of the house to become very annoyed. The old man takes it upon himself to further antagonise the man, which he does, causing the family to fall apart after an incident late one night. Solid film with no high intentions, but doesn't need any as the film is strengthened by superb acting, particularly from Hal Holbrook as the old man.

Update for 24 November...

Back to the movies.

Cherry Tree Lane is a British home invasion thriller about a middle class couple who are about to sit down to dinner when three thugs force their way into the home and beat up the man and gag the woman. It seems they want their teenage son who has ratted them out and they want their revenge. While waiting, the thugs make themselves at home. Not much more than that. Set, for the most part, in real time, this film is quite brutal, but the last half loses focus as the film desperately tries for a longer runtime. It wants to be Funny Games (two films I thoroughly hate) and at least is not as arrogant as Funny Games, but in the end, I don't know what the point of this film is other than showing a brutal home invasion (at least Funny Games has a point, even if we're bashed over the head with it). The final shot could've been concocted by Michael Haneke himself. A complete misfire from a director who had two solid previous outings (London to Brighton and The Cottage).

Ondine is an Irish film about an unlucky fisherman (Colin Farrell) who while fishing nets a mysterious woman named Ondine (Alicja Bachleda). She begs him to hide her away from everyone and he does at his house by the shore. Her arrival sparks a burst of luck for the fisherman, as he is now catching a lot of fish. The fisherman's young disabled daughter gets suspicious of him after he tells her a story about the girl and likens her to the mythical selkie. The daughter investigates and meets Ondine and is convinced that she is a selkie, who can provide three wishes when she sheds her selkie coat, possibly curing her kidney disorder. Meanwhile, the fisherman falls head over heels for her. It all seems like a fairytale until the truth begins to emerge. Charming film from director Neil Jordan that works really well on the fairytale stuff, falters a little when the inevitable dark side emerges, but still is a very watchable film.

Another quickie today.

Ligeia is a film based on another Edgar Allan Poe short story and a beguiling girl, Ligeia (Sofya Skya), who is performing experiments at the university that capture people's soul. Forced out by the dean, she steals his soul, putting the dean in a coma and seduces a influential lecturer (Wes Bentley), deliberately driving him and his fiance (Kaitlin Doubleday) apart. That is because she is dying and wants to live on in his fiance by placing her soul into the fiances. One of Poe's lesser stories and it shows here as they drag it out. Should be sexier, but no one wants to get naked (or really sexy for that matter, even gorgeous Sofya barely gets going), so it ends up boring and Michael Madsen further disgraces himself (it pays the bills I s'pose). Man, he needs to talk to Tarantino. Maybe he can bring Wes Bentley along with him.

Update for 14 November...

A quickie today.

Mother and Child follows 3 women who are interconnected, but they don't necessarily know it. Karen (Annette Bening) had a child at 14 and gave it up. Ever since, she has had a void in her life and has become an abrupt person, which causes friction with everyone including a new doctor (Jimmy Smits) who takes a shine to her. After getting together with the doctor, he encourages her to seek out the daughter she gave up. Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) is an independent woman who has just started a job at a new law firm and has an affair with her boss (Samuel L. Jackson) and also with her next door neighbour, but when she becomes pregnant, she withdraws from her life again. Lucy (Kerry Washington) is desperate for a child and is in line to adopt from a young girl who puts her through a strict trial, but she is about to be tested by both her husband and the birth mother. I think you know how I feel about ensemble dramas (I'm not a big fan...), but I didn't mind this film. It has strong performances by the female leads and the story, while predictable, is well told. Pleasantly surprised by this one.

Redux Friday, yeah, Redux Friday...

Collages and videos from Suburban Mayhem are now available here.

Reduxes are back, this time focusing on HD redos of a couple of films featuring New Zealand actress Emily Barclay.

Just some quick summing up of the films, Suburban Mayhem is an interesting story about Katrina, an incredibly toxic 19 year-old wmoan who may have had a hand in killing her father. The film has it's flaws and doesn't sustain the intensity of it's whirlwind of a lead performance from Emily. In My Father's Den is an absolutely superb film about a prodigal son returning for his father's funeral only for the horrifying family secret to rear it's ugly head and tear the family apart once and for all. Possibly one of the most gut wrenching films I've ever seen and probably one of the best of the 2000s. Big call, I know...

And I'm turning my opinion of HD. Sure, I see it's flaws, but when it gives us a never seen before upskirt and much better look at the upskirts from Emily in Suburban Mayhem (and there are many...), I can't complain.

Update for 5 November...

A Spanish film today. No, don't panic, this isn't going to be a lengthy Spanish update. Those only happen once a year...

Luna Caliente from director Vicente Aranda, well known for his erotic dramas (Carmen, Amantes, Lolita's Club for starters), adds another to the list. Set in 1970 during the Franco regime, Juan is an internationally recognised poet working for UNESCO although he says he's apolitical. Back in town (Burgos) for a brief respite, he meets up with an old doctor friend and has dinner with him, his wife and his 18 year-old daughter, Ramona (newcomer Thaïs Blume). Who just happens to be a flirty little minx or so he thinks... As he goes to leave, his rented car does not start and the doctor asks him to stay the night. And that's when the trouble starts. Finding it impossible to resist, he goes to where Ramona is sleeping, pulls the covers back to reveal her completely naked. As she rouses and becomes flirty, he sees it as an opportunity, except she rejects him, but he continues, raping her and putting a pillow over her mouth to muffle her screams. When he finishes, she is dead and he panics and leaves quickly, except he encounters the doctor, who is drunk, miserable and wants to go to the local whorehouse. Juan reluctantly drives him back to town, but the doctor wants him to come to the whorehouse and in a struggle, bashes the doctor's head on the dashboard, stunning him to possible brain damage, again panics and stages an accident making it look like the doctor drove off a cliff into water and drowned. Then he goes home, sleeps and wakes up and his hell is just beginning...

That's just the first act of this very intriguing thriller that has a great man who progressively gets worse as the film continues, all because of this 18 year old girl, who is something else. Just watching the videos below will give you an insight into how devilish she is. Definitely a challenging film with a wry sense of humour and not for those who want likeable characters because there are none. And I enjoyed watching this man's descent into hell and Thaïs Blume plays a truly evil young woman with a smile all the while and boy is she hard to resist.

The usual warnings applies, it does get ugly below... (why am I attracted to these films, I wonder?)

Update for 3 November...

More stuff from a new Australian film today.

The Kings of Mykonos (aka The Wog Boy 2) is the follow up to the 2000 box office smash The Wog Boy. It's 10 years later and Steve and Frank haven't really moved on. Steve is obsessed with his car and Frank is obsessed with the ladies. A long lost uncle of Steve dies in Mykonos and Steve is left his property including part of a beach in the will. So, he and Frank go to Mykonos to seal the deal, but local magnate Mihali wants it all and it's looking that way when Steve has to pay 1 million dollars duty. Also, Steve falls in love with local singer Zoe and Frank tries to break the island record of sleeping with the most women in a month, but comes into a stumbling block in an Italian beauty (Cosima Coppola). Hmm, talk about one joke that's carried on for over 20 years now feeling incredibly tired. This film feels like it needs an afternoon nap. It's not funny and the jokes are just a big fat 'meh'. Much of the film goes absolutely nowhere including most plot strands (the car race finale which ends in people pawing in goat shit has to be the most laughable thing I've seen in an Australian film ever, and that's saying something). I know the Wog franchise is as much maligned as it is loved in this country and I don't have a problem with it, but when a film this lazy and tired is the best they can come up with, it's time to move on.

At least the first film had Abi Tucker...

Update for 2 November...

I.C.U is a Gold Coast set Rear Window style thriller set in an apartment in one of those numerous apartment blocks they have there. Three teenagers, a brother and sister and the brother's friend stay with the father for a weekend at an apartment the father is minding for someone else. After the father is called in to work (as a detective), the three kids are left alone and are bored. The two boys start watching people in the other apartments across the way until one spots a woman who may have been attacked, so they tell their father. And then all hell breaks loose. Not much to the film and not much happens until the finale where it's twist after twist after twist after twist, none all that plausible (although one is definitely interesting) and a lot of angry acting as if somebody forgot to put the seat down on the toilet or something. Geez, take a chill pill.

Margot Robbie as a brunette looks pretty good and now that she's left Neighbours, it'll be interesting to see what type of roles she gets from here on in.
