Update for 30 April...

5.5 - Now with HD videos. The HD videos have the exact same content as the DVD videos but are at a different frame rate, hence the time difference.

Another new Australian film today in The Eye of the Storm. This is from the DVD, but the film has also been released to Bluray and I can't get my hands on it at the moment. But, as soon as I do, I'll put out HD stuff from the film.

If you want to know what I think of The Eye of the Storm, I reviewed it briefly when I saw it in cinemas in October.

Redux Friday for 27 April...

For today's redux, it's time to head back 11 years to when I first capped this film. XChange is a Canadian made, American set sci-fi thriller about a high up corporate type who reluctantly uses XChange, a mind swapping device that allows you to take charge of another person's body, and has his body stolen by a terrorist. Now he has two days to get his body back, but has to hide in a cloned body to find him because of some sort of massive conspiracy, you know what I mean? Always had a soft spot for this movie, a well made B-thriller that if it had more action scenes, it would be considered a classic. Instead, it has plenty of sex and nudity. Fine by me.

I can't believe this movie's 11 years old...

Australian Classics for 25 April...

Being over a month since I last did an Australian Classics, so it's about time I did another update. By the way, I've just worked out that this update brings the amount of Australian movies I've capped to 221 and I've watched a further 44 that had nothing to cap. And there's plenty more to come...

Today, I'm going to focus on a trilogy of movies that starred Wendy Hughes and were directed by actor Lex Marinos (recently played the old Greek father in The Slap) during the mid to late 80s.

Remember Me is a thriller about Jenny (Wendy Hughes), a woman who is doing well in life with a healthy marriage to Geoff (Robert Grubb) and has just started a new job as a social worker. Then, she is contacted by her ex-husband Howard (Richard Moir), a man who has been institutionalised for the last 9 years and very much wants her back, but Jenny is not having any of it. Except she agrees to meet him, and from their, the seeds are sown and Howard continues to infiltrate her life. When he asks Jenny back to their old apartment by the sea, Jenny falls for Howard once more and they have sex. Jenny then rejects Howard, but this causes mayhem causing her own mental history to come back to haunt her. But, is she seeing things or is Howard doing his level best to have her all for his own. Solid made-for-TV thriller with two very good performances from the leads Hughes and Moir who would also star together in the next film An Indecent Obsession.

An Indecent Obsession is a tawdry melodrama based on the novel by Colleen McCullough, cashing in on the success of The Thorn Birds. Honour Langtree (Wendy Hughes) is a nun being left in charge of looking after mental patients at Camp X at the end of World War 2. The group has all sorts of soldiers with mental issues, but is dominated by Luce Daggett (Richard Moir) who acts with superiority over the others. When a new patient Michael Wilson (Gary Sweet) is introduced to the group, the power dynamic changes immediately. Honour develops an affection towards Wilson, who seems 'normal', but is haunted by something that caused him to kill a fellow officer. The group of soldiers notices Honour favouring Wilson and this affects Luce and Neil Parkinson (Jonathan Hyde) and both have a thing for Honour and as the closer we get to why Wilson is at Camp X, the closer Honour gets to Wilson and this will have a devastating effect on the camp. This film is very melodramatic and with mental patients involved, you get all the overacting that this usually involves, but the film seems to handle mental illness in a time when little was known about it quite well. Wendy Hughes again dominates and is perfectly believable in the lead and is given solid support by Moir, Sweet, Hyde and the ever reliable Bruno Lawrence. But, it all so melodramatic and everyone wants Honour and this gets a bit tiresome. And more Bill Hunter would've been nice.

Nothing to cap from Boundaries of the Heart, the final of the Wendy Hughes/Lex Marinos trilogy. The 1988 film set in the mining town of Coolgardie about a 30-something women (played by Wendy Hughes) who spends her time waiting for someone to take her away from the town and her overbearing former cricketer/local legend father, but it's looking like it going to be another forgettable summer until a new man from Britain arrives in town. Yeah, not much to say about this film, more melodrama but a bit of a snorefest, long forgotten and rightfully so.

Update for 17 April...

An Australian film in HD. That's a rarity. Anyway, I haven't had the time to make collages from Burning Man and I'm about to go to sleep, but I'm hoping to have them done in the next few days. These HD videos are fresh off the griddle, so enjoy.

If you want to know what I think of Burning Man, I reviewed it here. I'm still trying to figure out where Gia Carides was in this film as she made the main credits, but I don't remember seeing her at all... 22.4 - Found Gia, she is in only one scene with sort of silver, possibly platinum blonde hair playing a real estate agent, hardly worth her name before the credits...

Update for 15 April...

As regulars to this site well know, I am a fan of dicey films featuring bikini clad women usually in peril. So here's the latest example.

Rites of Passage is a thriller about a group of students from an anthropology class run by Professor Nash (Stephen Dorff, back slumming it) who are invited to nerdy Nathan's (Ryan Donowho) family property where the Chumash Indians used to live, so they can recreate their ceremonies. Also invited are Dani (Kate Maberly, geez, is it really 20 years since The Secret Garden), a part Chumash girl who Nathan crushes on, but has major mental issues and is wild as all get out as she forgets her terrible past and various jocks and sorority girls (Chronicle cutie Ashley Hinshaw, Carly Schroeder and Sharon Hinnendael basically playing her Look character, without the copious nudity, sadly) and they are going to party away the weekend. Except living on the property is Nathan's ginseng afflicted brother (Wes Bentley, um yeah...) who desperately wants a Chumash wife and thinks he has one in Penelope (Briana Evigan) and then the partially Chumash Dani and Delgado (Christian Slater, has to be seen to be believed...), the meth huffing, shotgun toting caretaker who talks to a stuffed monkey toy and tries to exact revenge on the person who killed his wife and kid, who just happens to be Dani. Yes, everyone wants 'hot mess' Dani, people will become drug afflicted and a fair portion will die. Man, this is a B movie and proud of it, is completely silly, but also surprisingly fun to watch. It never tries to reach great heights, the name actors are having a lot of fun and the movie has enough snappy one liners and bitchy or drug soaked dialogue that makes it hard to dismiss. If only is had a decent amount of nudity from the pretty girls, not just plenty of bikini action... Damn it.

Update for 8 April...

Still playing around with Spanish films.

Mientras Duermes (Sleep Tight) is a creepy thriller about César (the always good Luis Tosar), a lonely doorman/supervisor of an apartment block who is in the process of perpetrating psychological (and possibly physical) torture on Clara (Marta Etura, also always good), a young, bright, fun loving woman. It seems César is entering Clara's apartment before she gets home, waiting under her bed until she goes to sleep and then knocking her out with chlorophyll to do want he wants to her. And he's sending her secret admirer letters that are going too far. Things escalate when César overhears a phone conversation between Clara and her boyfriend where she dismisses him and he decides to amp up his torture. He gives her a rash, then cures it, then puts cockroaches in her apartment. César helps get rid of the cockroaches as she goes to her mother's place and is in the process of the next phase of his torture when she comes home with her just arrived boyfriend and he is stuck in the apartment. He is caught leaving the apartment, but manages to get away by saying he forgot his bag of stuff that they had found. Police also close in on him, but he manages to divert them. Things are spiraling out of control for César and when he is given his two weeks notice to finish his job and leave the complex, he is also running out of time to complete his masterplan. Excellent and very creepy (and quite disturbing) thriller from the director of the two [REC] films (the first one I really like, the second one's not bad either) that is driven by an excellent performance by Luis Tosar who plays a bitter, lonely man who gets in over his head extremely well. Sure to be remade and toned down, so see this film before then.
