Update for 30 December...

Quick new Aussie update today.

Sleeper is a stalker thriller about an escaped criminal Resnik (wrestler Raven), a silent man who brutally escapes custody and seeks to find the one person that survived his blood bath that put him in jail. That was Kelly (Kym Jackson), who is about to go for a night on the town with her university friends, not knowing what's in store. A bunch of cops are desperately trying to contact her, but she has no mobile phone, making it harder to contact her. Meanwhile, Kelly is planning to take the next step with Wace, who seems reluctant to do so, and then he is kidnapped by Resnik. When the cops finally catch up with Kelly, they take her and her friends to a safe house, but Resnik is an unstoppable killing machine and nothing is going to stop him from getting Kelly. Hmm... I found it really hard to get into this film, mainly because the Resnik character is such an over-the-top conceit, that when the actually quite decent third act twist occurs, it seems out of place with the carnage that came before it. And the actual reason for his escape seems far too unlikely. Meh...

Update for 27 December...

While it's slow with new releases at the moment, there's a whole heap of half finished stuff that will probably be available in the new year. Anyway...

Killer Joe is a crime drama with a dash of dark humour that follows a family whose lives are about to change forever. Chris (Emile Hirsch) has had enough of his horrible mother and with being in debt with the local kingpin, he decides to kill two birds with one stone and off his mother for the insurance money. He gets the permission of his father Ansel (Thomas Haden Church), who is estranged from Chris's mother and is relatively disaffected with the idea. This is also overheard by Ansel's new wife Sharla (Gina Gershon) and Chris's slow sister Dottie (Juno Temple), who gleefully tells Chris to off their mother. Chris decides to call in Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a local cop who has a sideline as a hitman, but Chris doesn't have the $20,000 necessary to the hit to go ahead. But, Joe thinks on his feet and sees potential in Dottie and decides to do the job with Dottie being the retainer for his services as Chris gets the money together. Dottie and Joe hit is off and this complicates things, but even moreso when Joe kills Chris's mother and the insurance cheque comes in, which goes to her new lover. Now, it's going to get messy. Tough going with a number of full-on scenes, but if you can get through them, this is a solid film from legendary director William Friedkin based on the notorious play, with a particularly great and restrained performance from Matthew McConaughey and who can resist that little crumpet Juno Temple. I know I can't...

Update for 19 December...

In the middle of about 6 different updates, that's why it's been a bit slow around here. Oh, and it's always slow in December...

Deadfall is a thriller (and sadly not a remake of that magnificently awful 1993 film of the same name) following brother and sister, Addison (Eric Bana) and Liza (Olivia Wilde), rather close siblings, who have just gotten away from a casino heist and are on the run. But, they are in the middle of a massive snowstorm and Addison has just killed a cop. They decide to split up to confuse the cops. Liza is picked up by Jay (Charlie Hunnam), who has just gotten out of jail and gotten himself in trouble again. Jay is heading home to his retired cop father (Kris Kristofferson) and doting mother (Sissy Spacek) and running from the law and along the way, they fall in love. Elsewhere, Addison is slowly making his way to where Liza tells him to meet. Meanwhile, young cop Hanna (Kate Mara) is about to be thrown headlong into the chase which will come to a head when all meet up for a Thanksgiving showdown. Fairly stock standard stuff with a rather bizarre incest angle (particularly for an American film) that has a rather solid cast, particularly Eric Bana, but there's nothing special here. Well, except for some brief Olivia Wilde nudity...

Update for 15 December...

Not finished with the Spanish movies just yet..

Trash is a full-on drama following two sisters, their mother and those they know over the space of a full-on week. Clara's (Judit Uriach) life is about to go haywire. With her sister Susana (Marta Solaz) on the verge of giving birth, Clara gets clucky, which her long term boyfriend David (Óscar Jaenada) does not reciprocate. So much so that he cheats on Clara with the lead singer of his band Alicia (Carla Nieto) which Clara walks in on. She kicks him out and David starts getting heavily into alcohol and drugs to compensate while Clara immediately starts internet dating. Meanwhile, Clara's long time friend Nacho is back in town and he has a major crush on her and thinks he has a chance now with David out the way, but Clara only wants to be friends and goes off with her date, who after closing the deal, blows her off the next night. Meanwhile, Clara's mother Carmen (Assumpta Serna) has cancer, but hasn't told her daughters. At the clinic she meets Llum (Nuria Prims) who offers her relief, which may come in more ways than expected. Also, Susana's husband Cristian is about to close the deal with a Romanian client, but the client is obsessed with having a good time, to excess. And with Susana about to give birth, does he give in and join the fun. All of this explodes one night as Susana's water breaks. It's going to be a hell of a night. Man, do Spanish filmmakers love the full on dramas with a shitload of sex, alcohol, drugs, violence (though not in this film) etc.. I suppose that's part of the reason that I have a focus on Spanish films on this site. The second half of this film is very full on and to be honest, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Clara, who seems like a pretty reasonable person, goes off the rails so inexplicably you have to wonder what she was like before this film was set. The happy ending seems laughable particularly after Clara is actually raped and two seconds away from jumping into oncoming traffic just a few hours before. Hmmm... a mess.

Update for 14 December...

More Spanish movies.

Tengo Ganas de ti (I Want You) is the follow up to Tres Metros Sobre el Cielo, this time set 2 years later with H (Mario Casas) heading back to Barcelona. He still longs for Babi (María Valverde) although he is willing to move on. Early on H meets Gin (Clara Lago), an aspiring musician/actress and they immediately hit it off. A local tough has set about making H's journey back into his old life tough by stealing his brother's motorbike (who died in the first film) and threatening further violence. On the other side, Babi has moved on too, but her family is about to go through a really tough patch, with Babi's 15 year-old sister Daniela having a night out that she is going to regret, while her father is possibly having an affair. But one thing happens on that night out and that sets in motion events that could get H and Babi back together. But has H moved on with Gin or can his love for Babi be rekindled. The first film is an OK rebel tamed by the good girl drama, this film isn't much different, watchable but pretty stock standard. H isn't the rebel no more and the relationship with Gin seems more reasonable. But, this film lacks the thrills of the first film, Babi is relegated to second fiddle and as a result María Valverde is barely in the film. Boooo!!! (Oh, OK she was in Madrid, 1987 and that's a gold mine). Clara Lago (El Juego del Ahorcado, La Cara Oculta, Primos) is a more than admirable replacement and gives good feisty, so no complaints here.

Update for 12 December...

Things have been a bit slow new content wise in the last week or so, so it has enabled me to do some bigger updates on the TV side of the site, something I haven't done in a while. And there will me more to come in the coming weeks. The movie side has slowed completely, so it's time to do some Spanish stuff that's been waiting to be done.

The Pelayos is a gambling thriller where notorious gambler Gonzalo Pelayo (Lluís Homar), who has been working on a system to beat the roulette table has finally cracked it. But, he promised his family he would gamble no more because of a heart condition. So, he convinces his son Ivan (Daniel Brühl) to quit being a musician and form a crew to follow his system. So, Ivan gets a bunch of his cousins and his uncle Balón to join him in fleecing the casino, slowly but surely. After a while, it begins to attract the attention of the casino boss affectionately known as 'The Beast' (Eduard Fernández), who goes about making it as hard as possible for them to win, to the point where he gets them unlawfully banned from the casino. While trying to end that ban, Gonzalo, Ivan and the rest of the crew including Ivan's new girlfriend Shui (Hui Chi Chiu) formulate a plan to bring down the casino in one night and stick it to The Beast. Solid film that travels a well-worn path, nothing special but perfectly watchable.

And this is the 3rd update featuring Blanca Suárez in 12 months. Here's hoping for a lot more in the years to come.

Australian Classics for 5 December...

Update for 2 December...

This one, this one I've been waiting for. But, I gotta tell ya, the copy I got of Madrid, 1987 doesn't have English subtitles, so I haven't really watched the film, but it doesn't stop me from capping it. And boy is there a lot to cap. The film is basically María Valverde and José Sacristán locked in a cramped bathroom for 100 minutes with just a towel between them. Oh, and a lot of talking.

I could die for a Bluray of this movie, but I seriously doubt it'll happen. But, here's hoping.
