Update for 27 September...
Back to the movies.
The Ledge is a drama/thriller set around neighbours in an apartment block. Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) is on the ledge of a building waiting to jump. A cop (Terrence Howard) who just found out that his children aren't his, is asked to talk him down, so while Gavin is waiting for something, he tells his story to the cop. It starts with Gavin seeing his new neighbours Joe and Shana (Patrick Wilson and Liv Tyler). Gavin takes an immediate shine to Shana and immediately gives her a job at the hotel he works out when she goes for a job there. Joe and Shana asks Gavin and his gay roommate over for dinner and during dinner, Joe asks God for forgiveness for the roommates because they are gay, except Gavin isn't gay and is appalled by this. It seems that Joe and Shana are highly religious and Gavin doesn't believe in it at all. From that point on, Gavin hatches a plan to seduce Shana away for Joe while humouring Joe as Joe tries to convince him he is heading down the wrong path. And the plan works perfectly. Shana falls hard for Gavin, but Joe finds out and he is willing to do anything to make sure that Shana stays with him. Interesting idea with a trumped up way of telling the story which lets down the well told setup. In fact, the whole way it was told from the ledge and the ending is rather annoying. Really, telling his story on the ledge for 90 minutes? And why didn't he tell the cop why he was up there? Bah, a failure, but not a complete failure. Shame...

Australian Classics for 26 September...
Did this series back in 2002 so it's time to make a better version, well, slightly better version.
Angel Baby is a 1995 drama about the relationship between two schizophrenic people who try to make by themselves and without their meds. Harry (Irish actor John Lynch) attends a support group which has a new attendee in Kate (Jacqueline McKenzie). He falls for her instantly and follows her around. Over the night, they fall for each other and things develop quickly to the point that they move in together and fend for themselves. Everything is going fine, Harry even gets a job then Kate gets pregnant and they both decide to go off the meds. Then things go haywire. Their behaviour begins to change radically that it concerns Harry's brother and wife (Colin Friels and Deborra-Lee Furness). When kicked out of their flat, they squat at a construction site, putting the baby at risk. A pretty decent look at mentally ill people trying to live their lives with a couple of excellent performances from Lynch and McKenzie. It's a tough watch, but it's well worth a look.

Redux Friday enjoys the weekend...
Collages and videos from Good Neighbours now available here.
Collages and videos from John Carpenter's The Ward now available here.
Just a couple of HD video updates from recent series I have done. The Ward videos are now in the proper aspect ratio.
I said when I first did the videos of Emily Hampshire from Good Neighbours that I hoped that the Bluray copy would make it easier to lighten up that nude scene, but I'm afraid no luck, the scene is too dark. I tried...
I'll have an Aussie Classic and a brand new series from a new movie (finally!) in the coming days.

Update for 21 September...
A couple of quick looks at recent Australian films today, don't have much to say at the moment about either.
The Tree stars French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg as a woman coming to terms with the death of her husband and at the same time bringing up the kids. When a tree that is much loved falls through her bedroom, she believes it to be a sign from her husband. Then, the tree appears to be taking on a life of it's own. Not a bad film, but not for those who don't like the mushy stuff.
Snowtown is a dramatised look at the real life bodies in a barrel in a bank vault. What starts with a plan to kill local paedophiles expands quickly to greed when a group of men start killing unfortunate people for their social security checks. Snowtown focuses on the relationship between the intense leader of the group John Bunting and the 16 year old abused boy he befriends and lets into the group to join in the killings. Grim and intense film that ain't for those who don't like the ugly side of life, which it portrays scarily well, and is a better film for focusing on the central relationship than the crimes. But, the film is quite disjointed and probably needs more explaining as to why the killings changes focus.

Australian Classics for 20 September...
As promised, another Aussie Classic.
Money Movers is a 1978 heist thriller set in Adelaide about an armoured car company that has been robbed yet again. Meanwhile, head of security Eric Jackson (Terence Donovan) has his own plan to rob the joint on the day when $20 million will pass through the counting house. He thinks things are going well, cockily engaging a new security guard Leo Bassett (Tony Bonner) to see what he is hiding. But, a devious kingpin (Bud Tingwell) has figured out that Eric wants to rob the counting house and wants in. Eric, his brother Brian (Bryan Brown) and fellow worker Dick (Ed Devereaux) are forced to give in and with the help of the kingpin's thugs who will kill them after the heist, they execute the robbery. But, things don't quite go to plan... Solid and quite violent thriller from Bruce Beresford with plenty of twists and turns and an interesting look at Adelaide at the time. A pretty decent cast, lots of male blustering and a hyper-violent ending where not many are spared make it well worth a look.

Australian Classics for 19 September...
A quick Aussie Classic, thereby keeping the promise of one a week.
Freedom is a 1982 South Australia set, one man against the world drama starring, in his first film, the late Jon Blake whose soon-to-be career was cut tragically short in 1986 when a car accident left him in a vegetative state. Ron (Jon Blake) is a no hoper who gets fired from every job he's ever had because of his prickly nature and outright criminal activity. One day, he spies his dream car, a Porsche 911 and it's something he must have. And he gets his opportunity when he meets the woman who is driving one, Annie (Candy Raymond), an old school friend who has borrowed her boss's car. He asks her on a date, but decides to steal the car instead and run away from it all. At a petrol station he meets Sally (Jed Capelja, whose only other film is the classic Puberty Blues) and he decides to take her with him and do whatever she wants. And she wants to get her child back that was taken away from her. Then the cops catch up with him and he must use all his skills to evade them. Not a lot happens in the film. It's basically Ron dreaming, getting his dream and evading the cops for the final act, but Freedom is never boring. Sure, there probably should be more to it, but this is a car film, so for those who like these types of films, and there was plenty made in Australia in the early 80s, it does the truck without all the meaningful crap other films strive for. The director, Scott Hicks, saved that meaningful crap for Shine. And what terrible shame about Jon Blake because he is this film and shows he was a great leading man.
Another quick Australian Classic tomorrow featuring one of the stars of Freedom, Candy Raymond. She got second billing in Freedom even though he total screen time would be lucky to hit 5 minutes. That's how much of an one man show Freedom is.

Update for 15 September...
Let's go back to Australia for another film that ain't being released here yet.
X is a thriller set over one night in and around Kings Cross following two prostitutes who are drawn together. Holly Rowe (Viva Bianca) is on here last night of prostitution before going to France for new opportunities. Shay (Hanna Mangan-Lawrence) is a 17 year-old girl who is on the street trying to make money just to get by. By chance, Holly finds Shay and asks her to join in on a job where the client wants a blonde and a brunette. She accepts and they go to a hotel where they pleasure a low rent drug dealer until a man calls wanting to do a deal with the dealer. As the girls hide, they witness the dealer being murdered and the killer notices that someone else was in the room. He tracks down Holly via her service, then he goes about finding Shay. Oh, and the killer just happens to be a bent cop who will do just about anything to get what he wants. While the trailer pegged the film as Gaspar Noe-like, X isn't really like that. It's a taut thriller that reminds me more of a classier version of the director's 1999 thriller Redball. This film is much better made than that film, a more memorable thriller with the two leads that drive the film much more than the agro antics of Redball. Well worth a look.
Now, I can't wait for this film to be released in Australia sometime later next year. Fantastic...

Update for 13 September...
Here comes another Spanish film while I'm in the mood starring one of my all time faves.
Tres Metros Sobre el Cielo (Three Metres Above the Sky) is another rehash of the ol' good girl falls for bad boy story. H (Mario Casas) is a motor bike riding hood who went bad after finding his mother cheating on his father. He narrowly escapes jail for assaulting his mother's boyfriend. On his way from the court he spies Babi (María Valverde), a good little rich virginal firebrand and he instantly falls for her, but she is repulsed by him. When H and his friends gatecrash a party that Babi attends, H repulses her further by throwing her into the pool against her will, then damaging her male friend's car and beating him up. After her friend escapes leaving her behind, H offers her a ride home, which she reluctantly accepts and the first seeds of love are sewn. But, it's not without issues. Babi has said that she will testify against him for beating up her friend, but H isn't worried as he says he'll win her over. Babi's mother makes every attempt to stop Babi from seeing him and Babi's teacher spies Babi skipping school with H and gets her in trouble, almost expelled. And H isn't exactly helping his own cause, as for every time he gets her keener, he manages to find a way to piss her off. The film is what is what it is, nothing special, an OK take on the same ol' story with good solid leads. Of course my attention is elsewhere and it's amazing how many ways the makers could find to get María Valverde down to her underwear, it's quite amazing. She's getting dressed for school, she's thrown in the pool, she falls in shit, she needs to get in the pool and she strips and has sex with him etc. etc. No complaints here...

Australian Classics Redux for 12 September...
Here's a series I first did in January 2002.
That Eye, The Sky is a 1994 drama based on a novel by Tim Winton about a family who are learning to cope after their patriarch is left in a vegetative state after a car accident. Ort is a young boy who is coming to terms with his father's disposition and firmly believes that his father will be back to himself. Their mother (Lisa Harrow) is struggling with everything and the daughter Tegwyn (Amanda Douge) is looking to get away from the house and move to the city for a better life. When a drifter, Henry (Peter Coyote), offers to help out free of charge with the upkeep of the father, he will change all of their lives. You know what you're going to get with Tim Winton stories, families attempting to overcome the odds and this film is solid without being all that memorable. CloudStreet is definitely the Tim Winton story of choice, but this is still worth a look.

Update for 8 September...
A quickie.
A Heartbeat Away is a light comedy about Kevin (Sebastian Gregory), who is a guitarist in a wannabe garage band and is at odds with his father, who doesn't want his son fooling around with rock'n'roll music. His father is the leader of the local marching band who are desperately trying to stay together. One night, Kevin's father is hit by a truck and is hospitalised and the band is left in limbo. Enter the mayor (Colin Friels), who wants to build a develop where the marching band practise and can only do so by some arcane law that they can only take the land if the marching band disbands. And without Kevin's father, the band is done for. At his mother's insistance, Kevin decides to take over and things go terribly. With the help of Mandy (Isabel Lucas), the mayor's daughter who Kevin has a crush on, he is going to get the band kicking again with funky new moves and sounds to take the local marching band contest for the first time in a long time. But, not if the mayor has any say in it. Oh dear, this film is so cliched, even the cliches disown it. But that can be excused if the film is well made, but that is not the case here. The direction is haphazard and the story takes baffling turns like Mandy all of sudden deciding to study law or the song the choose to become fresh and modern is 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', a great song, but almost 20 years old. Then there's the montages, oh God, there's montage after montage after montage. And on and on and on. It feels like someone wanting to make a Baz Luhrmann film, except they take all the things that are bad about him and forget about the stuff he's good at. OK, this film isn't for my black heart, but fuck me, this film is boringly awful.
And what's up with Sebastian Gregory getting all the hot chicks in his films while playing outsiders or nerdy types. Tahyna Tozzi in Beautiful, Hanna Mangan-Lawrence in Acolytes now Isabel Lucas in this film. Bah, only in the movies.

Update for 5 September...
Let's head back to Spain.
Primos (Cousinhood) is a comedy from the director of Azuloscurocasinegro and Gordos, two films I quite like, about three cousins who a wondering what to do next when one of them is left at the altar. After some deliberation, they head to their favourite holiday place from their youth. Once there, Diego bumps into an old girlfriend Martina (Inma Cuesta) and looks to get back with her to soothe his pain from being left at the altar. Julián spies the old video store owner Bachi, who has lost his shop and is always drunk and his daughter (Clara Lago, brilliant in El Juego del Ahorcado) is working at a brothel. José Miguel is a walking nervous wreck with all sorts of ailments with his girlfriend perpetuating them. All three cousins are going to change over their holiday and not necessarily in the way you expect. Yeah, I dunno, I didn't really like this film as much as the previous two films. Most of what happens seems inconsequential. Is it really a good thing to move on by going backwards? Bah, why not just beg your runaway bride to come back? Sure, people go to what they know best because it's the easiest thing to do, but do you really move on when you do this? Disappointing film, sadly.

Redux Saturday thinks it's a Friday...
Would you believe it's been more than 9 years since I first capped this film?
Velvet Goldmine is a 1998 drama about the rise and fall of a couple of fictional stars of glam rock. In 1984, journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale) is asked to write a 'whatever happened to' story about Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), a glam rock star who faked his own on stage murder and disappeared off the face of the Earth afterwards. For Arthur, it's about reliving his own past and love affair with its stars. In the early 70s, Brian Slade is making his way up with the help of his wife Mandy (Toni Collette) and plays at the same gig as his idol Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor), which begins a strange fascination of him leading to something a lot more when Brian asks for Curt to join him and his band. As Arthur interviews various people with intimate knowledge of the goings on at the time, he relives his own coming out with his first time being with one of the mainstays of that period. Man, this film feels like it was made an eternity ago and the actors involved went onto wider acclaim. The film has aged badly, Christian Bale feels all wrong for the role and the role is rather insignificant anyway. The main characters all obviously based on well known members of the period and that plays on the mind constantly throughout. Even the apparent re-emergence of Brian Slade feels ridiculous. I dunno, maybe this film isn't for me, but I don't know why as I quite like the artists of that period. Something just feels real off about this film. Ah well...
I've had the old half-arsed fullscreen DVD release of this film sitting around for a while waiting for me to get around to it, but then I found the HD widescreen version. Then I noticed that Emily Woof's nudity only seems to appear in the fullscreen version, so I have both versions of both scenes below and all look remarkably different. Hmmm...

Update for 1 September...
Something I haven't done in a while. a Spanish update and why not start with one of my faves.
Agnosia is a romantic thriller that begin with when a young Joana has an accident and loses the ability to see things as they are (a visual agnosia as such). Years later, Joana (Bárbara Goenaga) is looked after by a bunch of servants at her father's house and is about to marry Carles (Eduardo Noriega), her father's protege to his lens business. A new servant Vicent (Félix Gómez) also begins work at the house and he sort of looks like Carles, enough so that Joana can't tell the difference. Vicent takes an immediate liking to Joana. When the father dies intervening in a burglary gone wrong, Carles takes over the business and is given an offer to sell the business by Prevert (Martina Gedeck from that brilliant German film The Lives of Others), which he declines. Then a plan is put into place Prevert to get what she wants, the specifications to the scope for a gun, which was abandoned when Joana lost her sight. This involves the doctor looking after Joana setting up a phony experiment to cure her agnosia and kidnapping and forcing Vicent to act as Carles and get her to tell them what or where the specifications may be. Of course, Joana takes comfort in Vicent as Carles and it sets off a chain of events that will end in tragedy. Great film that plays up the love story angle extremely well and sets up for quite a devastating final act. The plot is very intriguing and to see the extravagant plot unravel is a treat. And with one of my favourite Spanish actresses in Bárbara Goenaga starring, it's the icing to a very tasty cake.
