Update for 30 August...

Over to the horror movies, well, sort of.

The Cabin in the Woods is a satire of the tropes of horror films where 5 archetypal friends are brought to a cabin in the woods to enjoy a weekend away, not knowing that they are being manipulated by a control room. As the usual couples hook up, the jock and the ditzy girl, the sensitive guy and the so-called virginal girl (while the stoner gets nothing, per usual...), the control room unleashes stock horror villain #543, Civil War Zombies. As the zombies take the group out in the usual order, the control room are rejoicing yet another success, except the stoner isn't dead and he comes back to ruin the plot and uncover a worldwide conspiracy or some shit, whatever... I can't think of a film that feels like someone is pointing and laughing at me more than The Cabin in the Woods. Say what you will about generic horror films but at least they don't insult you for watching them (they may insult you in other ways though). If the makers of this film think that it will change horror films forever, then I've got news for them, it won't and nor have they. Who's laughing at who now? (Ah, probably them still...)

Australian Classics for 28 August...

A quick Australian update today.

The Naked Country is a 1985 tawdry drama about Lance (John Stanton) and Mary (Rebecca Gilling), who own land that encroaches on what some local Aborigines claim to be their land. After an initial stand off, Lance decides to make peace with the Aborigines. When the chief agitator Mundaru (Tommy Lewis) is denied the hand in marriage of Menyan (Neela Dey), who instead joins the growing list of wives of an elder, Mundaru loses it. First, he and those friendly with him kill a prize bull owned by Lance, then in the commotion, a local cop (John Jarratt) is speared to death and Lance narrowly escapes, although he cops a spear in the shoulder. Meanwhile, head local cop Sergeant Neil Adams (Ivar Kants) comes in to look for the missing Lance. Mary, who is feeling unfulfilled in marriage to Lance, asks to join in the manhunt and one night they sleep together. While this is going on, Lance, Mandaru and his friends are in a life and death battle, as local elders set about getting their own justice for Mundaru. There's some interesting stuff here and most of it settles around the battle between Lance and Mandaru (both John Stanton and Tommy Lewis are great in this film), but when the film doesn't focus on this, it's extremely soapy. Everything involving Mary is so groan inducing that it stops the film from been a good watch. And then there's the 'blacking up' of Neela Day to look like an Aborigine, which is just embarrassing and even more so when in the interviews with various people involved with the film have a problem with it. Whose dumbarse decision was that? Director Tim Burstall once blazed a trail for future filmmakers, but The Naked Country is a poor film and it wouldn't get any better for him with the mediocre Kangaroo in 1987 and the just plain embarrassing American supersoap rip-off Return to Eden (which is being remade, fuck off...).

Update for 23 August...

How 'bout something new(er).

Perfect Sense is a romantic drama set in a worldwide pandemic. A strange virus envelopes the entire Earth that begins with a temper tantrum and ends with the lose of smell. In Glasgow, Susan (Eva Green) is brought in to find a cure for the virus. Meanwhile, outside her place, a chef Michael (Ewan McGregor) spies Susan and takes a shine to her. After initial hesitations, they hook up. But, the virus begins to get worse, with taste being the next sense taken. Eventually, everyone moves on, including Susan and Michael, whose relationship develops. It isn't before long that hearing goes and all hell breaks loose. Can Susan and Michael's relationship survive this devastating virus. Bizarre, downbeat thriller that has the fingerprints of those downcast Danes from the Dogme school all over it. The idea of a pandemic that takes your senses one by one is an interesting one and works well here, although the efforts to work the virus out are barely mentioned. The romance in the middle of this and the main focus of the movie just isn't interesting enough. Both people are quite unlikeable, at one stage calling each other Mr and Miss Arsehole, so it's hard to become emotionally involved in their relationship. There's a good idea in this movie, it's just too bad an emotionless love story had to spoil it.

Australian Classics for 21 August...

Following up from yesterday's Barry McKenzie series, today features the follow up and also the bonus of another Barry Humphries character spectacular from the 80s.

Barry McKenzie Holds His Own is the 1974 follow up to the 1972 original where Barry McKenzie (Barry Crocker) and his aunt Edna Everage (Barry Humphries) are heading over to Paris to visit Barry's identical twin brother Kevin (um, probably Barry Crocker...), a reverend who is doing a talk in Paris. Meanwhile in Transylvania, head vampire Count von Plasma (Donald Pleasence) is wanting some royal blood and accidentally mistakes Edna Everage for the Queen of England and sends two incompetent goons to kidnap her. Finally, they kidnap her and the Australian cultural attaché tells Barry that he is not safe in Paris and that he can hide in England. Except, you now need a work permit to get into England, so Barry is smuggled in by boat. Once in England, he is instantly detained, but escapes to the Australian embassy where they hatch a plan to get Edna back from the Count. Having a similar nonsensical plot change as the Alvin Purple sequel, this film handles it a lot better though. This film is actually pretty funny, I especially crack up any time the legendary Clive James' piss pot character appears on the screen, always opening a Foster's and then being siphoned for his blood, except it's 100% Foster's. Yeah, it's still very politically incorrect, there's even a black face scene, but once you get over the fact that these were different times, it's a very enjoyable sequel.

Les Patterson Saves The World is a 1987 comedy that brings back Edna Everage (now a Dame) and brings in another Barry Humphries' character Sir Les Patterson. Sir Les is banished to being ambassador in an unnamed Middle Eastern country after an incident at the UN where one of his farts in accidentally lit and sets alight the ambassador for that Middle Eastern country. The US President (Joan Rivers bafflingly as herself) is hoping that Sir Les will be killed off once he got there, but there is a coup and the old regime is usurped by the swarve Colonel Godowni (Thaao Penghlis) and his right hand man Inspector Farouk (Hugh Keays-Byrne) and welcomes Sir Les into the country. Meanwhile, a local doctor, Dr. Charles Herpes (Henri Szeps) has, with his assistant Veronique (Pamela Stephenson), developed a nasty disease for the KGB who are going to use it to put on toilet seats in the Pentagon to infect the high-ups. The disease is then stolen by the Colonel's people who plan to use it to put on everyone's toilet seat so they can take over the world. Enter Dame Edna Everage, who has entered the Middle Eastern country as a part of a cultural exchange, except she is an undercover agent for the CIA and she and Les may just save the world yet. If only they could save us from this film, which is just repulsive. Viruses on toilet seats? Really? Thank you 80s AIDS scare tactics. And there's a number of rather undignified scenes throughout, one involving cross-dressing which is just embarrassing for all involved, save it for the professionals. And must all women instantly fall for the repulsive Sir Les? I'll admit, one of two moments work, the ending is pretty silly, but it's not enough to bother with this film. Barry Humphries has done some great work with his characters over a long period of time, but this film ain't it. Hell, Dame Edna seems far too dignified to be in this mess...

Australian Classics for 20 August...

Wow, I've capped a fair number of Australian movies from the 70s recently, well, here's another.

The Adventures of Barry McKenzie is a 1972 ocker comedy about the Aussie who everyone in Australia knows, Barry McKenzie (Barry Crocker). When Barry's father dies, his father leaves him $2000 on the condition that he spend it in England spreading his unique Aussie way. Joined by his aunty Edna Everage (Barry Humphries, who else...), he reluctantly leaves and finds himself getting fleeced by the locals as well as confiscating the precious Foster's Lager. Once in England, he meets up with his friend Curly who introduces him to the Aussie sites in London. In a pub, he is asked to act in an ad for a pervy ad director, but when he falls for his co-star (Maria O'Brien), the ad director stops him from congress, much to Barry's chagrin. Barry and Edna meet up with old friends the Gorts, a typically British family with an ugly duckling daughter they want Barry to marry, but Barry manages to escape only to be taken in by jaded hippie folk singers who use him to make it big. It turns out Barry's a hit singing one of Curly's anti-Pommie poems. But in the commotion to get his services, he is knocked out and taken to hospital where a dodgy psychiatrist (Barry Humphries, again) declares him insane because of his ocker speak. Again he escapes. His aunty then takes Barry to meet an old Aussie friend Lesley, a lesbian who has an ex-husband (Peter Cook) who is a producer of a late night BBC show and wants Barry to spread his infectious behaviour, with disastrous results. Yeah, some of the comedy has dated in our PC environment, but gross-out comedy never dates and the first Barry McKenzie film is still a pretty funny film. And let's face it, it's such an Aussie film that it might just be unwatchable to anyone outside of Australia, even the English (a thing that is ridiculously compensated for in the follow up). And boy do the Poms cop it. The only thing there is more of is Foster's. A fun film that is a nostalgic reminder of that continuing rivalry between Australian and the old Country.

More tomorrow or so from the follow up to this film, Barry McKenzie Holds His Own.

Redux for 19 August...

Another quick Spanish HD redo today. Not really happy with the HD rip of this movie, in fact solid colour look pretty ordinary in the rip (could be the same from the bluray), but it's the only one ever released, so nothing I can do about it. Still perfectly watchable nonetheless.

Collages and videos from Hierro are now available here.

Redux Friday continues to like it Spanish...

Collages and videos for Los Cronocrímenes (TimeCrimes) are now available here.

More Spanish HD updates today. Decided to redo the whole series as I had a bit of time and not a lot to work with. Also done another edit with multiple caps, not much, but better than nothing. Also there's one video with all of the nudity from Bárbara Goenaga and one video with all her nippy and skimpy scenes.

Update for 16 August...

Let's have a change of place and go somewhere I haven't been in a while.

Hanyo (The Housemaid) is a South Korean drama and remake of a 1960 film about Eun-yi (Do-yeon Jeon), a woman who has just got over a trauma and hopes that the offer of a new job as a maid will take her mind off it. Looking after the precocious child of Hae-ra (Woo Seo), who is also pregnant with twins and businessman Hoon, Eun-yi is enjoying her job. Hoon takes a shine to her, which Eun-yi has no problem reciprocating and they begin an affair. The head maid Byung-sik (Yeo-jeong Yoon) finds out about the affair and accidentally tells Hae-ra's mother. And when Eun-yi becomes pregnant, Hae-ra, with the coercion of her mother, decide that she must not have that baby, at any cost. Solid film that has a rather over the top ending, but the story is well told and well worth a look.

Australian Classics for 15 August...

I can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to capping this movie. It's a national shame, well, maybe not that bad...

Stone is a 1974 bikie cult classic about a cop named Stone (Ken Shorter) who has been asked to find the person who is assassinating bikies. He attempts to join the Gravediggers, run by Undertaker (Sandy Harbutt, also writer/producer/director etc.) and is helped when he saves Undertaker from being assassinated. The gang reluctantly allows the cop to join but they welcome him as he is willing to join in their activities. As Stone goes about looking who is behind the killing, he finds that most people actually welcome the Gravediggers because while they're rowdy, they actually drive business. It turns out that those wanting them dead are not actually the usual enemies of bikies. It's tough to describe the plot of this film because not a lot actually happens, it's more about the lifestyle and this is usually portrayed in the film with striking images more than plot. Stone is a filthy film, with the biker gang and their girls looking incredibly dirty which definitely adds a layer of authenticity to the film. Other images such as a massive (and quite insane) clifftop dive from a motorcycle, the bikie funeral ride, a bikie race and the brutal final scene are memorable even almost 40 years on. While the film meanders along in no hurry to get to it's destination, it's never boring and is far more intriguing than most biker films even when it delves into gross misogyny and other ugly behaviour. Stone is fascinating film that will be forever memorable.

Below you will find that I have released the videos in both widescreen and fullscreen. Not a lot of difference between the two except the fullscreen videos are darker and occasionally cut off relevant material. From what I understand, this version of Stone is the director's cut as the film was originally up to 40 minutes longer in cinema release, but was cut continually along the way. This is the only version that has gotten wide release and I'll doubt we will ever see Stone as it was originally released, although some deleted scenes on a possible future Bluray release would be nice. Also, word of a remake has cooled, which is probably a good thing.

And talking about remaking 70s Australian Classics, the Patrick remake is finally about to start filming with Sharni Vinson in the lead. Interesting choice...

Australian Classics Redux for 14 August...

Don't have ready what I wanted to release today, so here's a quick release, a redo from a old series I did in 2003. Yet, I'm still on the Spanish kick as this series is of La Spagnola (The Spanish Woman), a go at a Spanish melodrama set in Australia amongst the immigration influx of the 1950s. Haven't seen this film since I first capped it and it's actually not a bad attempt at a Spanish melodrama, better than I remember it being. And it's written by Anna Maria Monticelli, who I've capped before from the film The Dark Room and with her director husband also made Disgrace.

Unless there's a rush, I'm sure that La Cara Oculta will be in my top 5 for the year.

Update for 9 August...

I haven't capped a Spanish film in a while, so here goes.

Carne de Neón is a comic thriller set in the underworld that follows Ricky (Mario Casas), a young man who has been brought up on the streets after his prostitute mother was jailed. Now, she is about to be released and Ricky would like to see her dream of a club/brothel named Hiroshima realised so that she can live comfortably. With the help (and against the word) of his pimp friend Angelito and bodyguard El Niño, they get some girls and start a brothel. This attracts the attention of local mobster Chino, in which nothing gets done without his cut, so he kidnaps Ricky and tells him he'll let him off if he pays half of the profit to him and kidnaps the daughter (Blanca Suárez) of a cop who was involved in killing Chino's son. This is going to get ugly and good luck surviving the mess. Ultraviolent and quite nasty film that at one time can be funny, but also has the propensity to be very ugly. It's hard to make laughs out of sex trafficking and baby broking and there's some, but it feels a bit off to honest. But, I like Blanca and love that she's becoming the next go to go for Pedro Almodovar. Also, Macarena is always a gas in everything she's in, check out Sexykiller, Morirás Por Ella, El Calentito and Dagon to see what I mean.

Australian Classics for 6 August...

Today, we go back to the 70s for Australian Classics.

The Picture Show Man is a light comedy nostalgia piece from 1977 that follows a father and son travelling picture show troupe. Pop (John Meillon) and Larry (Harold Hopkins) travel across the bush showing films to towns that are starved of such things. But, they are struggling and have just lost a piano player in Lou (Garry McDonald), who joins their competition, run by an American called Palmer (Rod Taylor). Pop replaces Lou in the next town with playboy piano player Freddie Graves (John Ewart) and then picks up a new horse, well, a horse that was a champion, but is now struggling. It is not until the horse is embarrassing trounced by a horse ridden by a woman that Pop realises his error. Meanwhile, Larry has a growing need to move on and that's when he meets a woman bathing in a lake, Lucy (Sally Conabere), who was also the woman jockey. He immediately falls for her and then convinces Pop that he could stay with her while Pop goes onto the next town. Pop replaces his son with a travelling gypsy magic act, but that goes wrong when Pop attempts a relationship with the woman of the group. It's clear that Pop is out of his depth, but a change in luck is around the corner. Set in the times when sound was about to be implemented in movies, this film is a small joy, but at the same time a slight film. While never boring and has some genuinely funny moments, it seems stuck on being a slapstick film, which may have been befitting of the time the film is set, but doesn't quite click in regards to the film. A fun film, but ultimately a forgettable one. And it's good to see Rod Taylor in an Australian film.

Australian Classics for 6 August...

Australian Classics today unearths a genuine iconic Australian film.

Mad Max is a 1979 action revenge thriller set in the not too distant future that follows the aftermath of the death of notorious criminal Knightrider during a police chase. The bikie gang he belongs to, run by Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Byrne), continue to run amok as Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) and Goose (Steve Bisley) attempt to bring the gang down. After a run-in with bikie young turk Johnny The Boy (Tim Burns), who is let off a charge, Goose is determined to get him, but it goes wrong and Goose is murdered by Johnny The Boy at the insistence of Toecutter. Max decides to quit as it has all gotten too much. He goes on holiday with his wife Jessie (Joanne Samuel) and his Sprog, but along the way they run into the bikie gang and piss them off. So, they go after Max and family, but in the commotion the arm of one of the bikies gets ripped off. And now the bikies wants revenge and they deliver it in a way that will unleash Max and turn him into Mad Max with the car to match. Deservedly iconic Australian film, but is nowhere near as good as its exhilarating first 10 minutes, a sublime car chase in the back roads of Victoria. The film then regathers and takes a while to get back into full throttle, but by no means does this make Mad Max a bad film. A great film that would later be bettered by it's sequel.

Redux Friday comes a bit late...

Being elsewhere this week plus I put more work into the Lip Service update to get it done on Friday. So, here's a brief redux continuing this possibly ill-advised mission to redo all my pre-seamless series.

I remember not liking I.D. on first viewing but I watched it so long ago that I couldn't remember why. Rewatching the film recently, it is better than I remember, but still suffers from the pretty ridiculous character arc of the lead character. Sure, I can believe that he can get addicted to the lifestyle of a football hooligan, but to turn into a skinhead from where he started? Really? I suppose it could be the progression of someone who started as a football hooligan, but you'd have to be completely off the rails to go from cop to skinhead. Ah well... And why do I keep watching these hooligan films when I don't particularly like them? Baffling...

Nudity from Saskia Reeves reminds me that I have finally found a copy of the Australian film Traps in which she has some pretty good nudity. It's from a VHS copy, but the quality looks alright, so I'll hopefully get around to capping it soon.

Update for 1 August...

Let's head back to the present, well, the movie is set in the 80s but was just released.

Dirty Girl is a road movie comedy drama about Danielle (Juno Temple), the school's promiscuous girl who has been sent to the special class because of her ways. In class, she is forced to do a project of minding a bag of flour dressed up as a baby with the fat and gay Clarke (Jeremy Dozier). Both are having major problems with their parents, with Danielle's mother (Milla Jovovich) about to marry a Mormon man (William H. Macy) with two kids and Clarke's parent's desperately trying to stop him from being gay. Danielle is also pining to meet her real father and finds out who it is and decides that she is going to track him down. After an altercation with his very strict father, Clarke steals his father's car and credit card and picks up Danielle and helps her to find her father. With Clarke's father in hot and heated pursuit and Clarke's and Danielle's mother heading to Danielle's father to warn him of what is about to happen, Danielle and Clarke become friends, bonding over their love of music and being parent's to a rather expressive bag of flour. Dirty Girl is a fun film with some great laughs and two great characters to follow. There's some great support from the parental characters as well. If I was to have a problem with the film, it feels like it's set in the 70s than in 1987 plus there's an excessive amount of Melissa Manchester music... Anyway, well worth a look and let's face it, you all know I'll watch Juno Temple in anything, so this film was always going to be featured here.
