Australian Classics for 30 July...

Alvin Purple comes back for one more adventure, well, in only a supporting role.

Melvin, Son of Alvin is a 1984 sex comedy following Melvin (Gerry Sont) who is insatiable to all women, but at his final year of high school, Melvin is still a virgin and is repulsed by the attention that he receives. He also doesn't know that his exploitative dad is not his real father, but is the notorious Alvin Purple (Graeme Blundell) who knocked up his mother (Abigail, playing her third different character in the series hereby fucking up continuity completely). After being besieged at the cinema, a mysterious person helps Melvin escape on the back of their motorcycle, who turns out to be a beautiful Greek girl named Gloria (Lenita Psillakis). She seems to be the only woman that isn't sexually charged by him and they end up falling for each other although her stereotypical Greek mother is never far behind. Meanwhile, a persistent current affair reporter (Tina Bursill) knows that Melvin is Alvin's son (fucked if I know how...) and wants to get them together for that one big reunion story/exposé (slow news week I assume...). Alvin is rotting away being at the beck and call of sleazy agent Burnbaum (Jon Finlayson, also playing 3 different character across the series) including an incredibly dodgy sex cult (hang on, there's a sensible one?). When the reporter finally gets father and son together, Burnbaum sees an opportunity to exploit Melvin, but Gloria is having none of that. By now, the 80s sex comedy had become entrenched and this new Alvin Purple movie is a different beast from the 70s version. Feeling more like an American movie than the very Australian original, the idea of Alvin, like the character in this movie has very much lost it verve. While Melvin, Son of Alvin is not anywhere near as terrible as Alvin Rides Again, this film at least knows where it's going. It has it's moments and the Gloria character is genuinely likeable and worthy of Melvin's attention, but overall the movie feels old hat once you've seen a bunch of 80s sex comedies.

It's funny that the 70s Alvin Purple films had no problem with full frontal nudity, but this film seems incredibly shy about it. There is an abundance of breasts and the occasional bum, but no full frontal nudity whatsoever. Hmm, it seems bizarre that things have become more prudish over time. Ah well... Also, looking up Lenita Psillakis's profile and this is the only film she ever appeared, but my Spidey senses were tingling (I know, it's sad, it not even worth...). Didn't I cap another Australian actress named Lenita at some stage? I sure did, Lenita Vangellis from the pilot for Good Guys, Bad Guys, which was 13 years after Melvin, Son of Alvin. But, I reckon it's the same woman, certainly looks like her. Hmmmm...

Also, this series was captured from a VHS copy of the movie, so while the quality is OK, it's still could be better.

And isn't it about time for Kelvin, Son of Melvin, Son of Alvin? Graeme Blundell is still kicking around, so's Gerry Sont. Why not?

Redux Friday continues on with Alvin Purple...

Well, when your film is a hit, what do you do? You make a sequel and that's where Alvin Rides Again comes in. The problem with Alvin Rides Again is that is has a massive case of rush job written all over it. The first act is basically a rehash of the original with Alvin looking for work and losing his job because some woman wants to or does have sex with him. Then he goes on the road with his friend Spike and bizarrely join a women's cricket team where they dress as women to help them to victory and win a bet they laid. And then for some strange reason the film turns into a gangster comedy as Alvin is a dead ringer for an American gangster and when the gangster dies, Alvin is forced into impersonating the gangster so that his crew can get his money from the robbery that was set up. The writing is all over the place, it feels like 2 different ideas have been awkwardly forced together and when it doesn't the film is just rehashing the stuff from the original film like a massive car chase and some Benny Hill style comedy. Ugh, Alvin Rides Again is a sloppy mess of a film with an occasional funny moment, usually from Frank Thring or the gangster's ridiculous obsession with Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo. There's also the feel that they got Abigail naked in the film and just built the rest of the film around that moment. Hmmm, not all bad I s'pose.

And let's face it, continuity is never an issue with this series. Tomorrow's film Melvin, Son of Alvin, throws all continuity out the window.

Redux Friday rediscovers Alvin Purple...

I thought it would be about time I recapped one of the iconic films in the history of film in Australia. I first capped (and watched) Alvin Purple in 2004 and boy there's a helluva lot of nudity in it. It's a bit of a culture shock to watch now as the film is incredibly sexist and bordering on troubling, particularly the plot point of a psychiatrist sending frigid women to Alvin to loosen them up, only for the incredibly sleazy psychiatrist to film it all without permission and sell them to stag parties. While Alvin Purple is very much made as a piece of entertainment, it also has an interesting take on sex and how women handle it. Sure, the term nymphomaniac gets uttered numerous times (and let's face it, only women are nymphos), but the film also looks at the burgeoning of female sexuality. Well, in between massive dollops of nudity. Overall, Alvin Purple is well worth a look, it's quite a fun film even when it becomes questionable and men don't come out of the film looking all that well, although Alvin goes about redeeming himself to the one girl he actually likes. The same can't be said of the two follow up films which are both pretty appalling, particularly the slipshod Alvin Rides Again.

It's funny, but with all the nude women in the film, the woman I liked the most in the film is Elli Maclure (as does Alvin...), who doesn't get naked in the film (although she does in The True Story in Eskimo Nell, as does Elke Neidhardt, Kris McQuade and Abigail who all appear in Alvin Purple). When I rewatched the movie recently I kept trying to think of which modern actress Elli reminds me of and I finally came up with Ashleigh Cummings, who's in the upcoming Puberty Blues TV series, both in how she looks and their voices are similar.

Over the next couple of days, I will release collages and videos from the 1974 follow up Alvin Rides Again, featuring many of the same actresses as Alvin Purple and the 1984 follow up Melvin, Son of Alvin, a film which while still in the same style, has ten further years of female sexuality to deal with.

(Updated 01/03/2024 - All videos are now in HD and uncut) Featuring below are videos from the recent showing of Alvin Purple on the HD channel (thank you Channel 9, if only your dramas had the same care that you give movies), sadly cut as films rated R in Australia (which Alvin Purple is) cannot play uncut on Australian TV and videos from the uncut DVD. The edits are relatively minor and only affect two videos (the Debbie Nankervis and Elke Neidhardt videos also the Shara Berriman HD video has the image made bigger when it comes to the full frontal from behind moment). Ah well...

Update for 26 July...

Hmm, I just saw this movie at a nickel and dime cinema 6 weeks ago and now it's on DVD. Lucky I got the cheap seats...

Swerve is an Australian noir thriller set in and around a small town in the middle of nowhere. Colin (David Lyons) is driving to a job interview when he passes Jina (Emma Booth) making a quick getaway from somewhere when a car from the opposite direction plows into Jina. Jina is a little shaken up, but when Colin goes to the other car, the driver is dead and there's a briefcase with a helluva lot of money in it. Colin does the right thing and hands in the money to local copper Frank (Jason Clarke). Colin's car is a bit messed up, so Frank offers to let him stay at his house as the local motel is full up. When they get to Frank's house, he introduces Colin to his wife, Jina. And she's very unhappily married by the looks of it. Also in town is a mob hard man (Travis McMahon), who wants the money while Jina's boss Sam (Vince Colosimo) is also acting mighty suspicious when he's not hitting on Jina. The hard man eventually gets to Frank and knocks him out, but can't find the money because Frank wants it all for his own and has hidden it. Frank wakes up to see his wife looking to runaway again, this time with Colin, so he strangles Jina almost to death. Colin gets there in time and strikes Frank, hard enough to kill him. Jina suggests that they get rid of the body down an abandoned mine shaft, one she seems mighty familiar with. But, it ain't over yet... A wildly erratic thriller from Craig Lahiff (who has a long line of thrillers to his name including the very good Fever and the truly awful two shot of Strangers and Ebbtide), that has it's moments particularly early on, but is let down by a preposterous final act where one character turns into Superman. Also, characters seems to be one step ahead of everyone else which seems even more ridiculous when they come undone so easily. It's not all bad as the setup is fine and the characters are solid, but it execution is a real worry. But, I'll watch Emma Booth in anything, so yeah... (where's Hippie Hippie Shake?)

Update for 24 July...

Another new Australian film.

Face To Face is a drama that takes place at conciliatory meeting for slow-witted Wayne (Luke Ford) who will go to jail if a consensus is not reached between him and his boss Greg (Vince Colosimo). Run by Jack (Matthew Newton), he has gathered Wayne, his mother (Lauren Clair), his best friend, Greg, his wife (Sigrid Thornton) and other workers for the conciliatory meeting where they thrash it out. After been sacked from his job, Wayne goes round to Greg's place and rams his car repetitively, injuring him. But, it seems the problem can be traced back to deep-seated problems at the workplace. Worker satisfaction is low, the workplace pranks quite nasty and Greg takes his workers for granted. As each tell their side to the story, it becomes clear what needs to be done to save Wayne and help the workplace. Hmm, there's a lot to like in this film based on a David Williamson play, as the performances are uniformly great and the tension is genuinely there. But, and this is coming from someone with similar sensibilities, this film is liberal's wet dream and not based on any grounds of reality. It's all too convenient and friendly in the end and the only losers as such aren't even in the meeting to defend themselves. The more I think about the film/play, the more problems I have with it. But, in no way is Face To Face a poor film, just far too idealistic.

Australian Classics for 21 July...

This is the final of the video dumps from Australian films I've neglected over time. This time I think we'll go a bit modern as in films made in the last 10 years.

As of this update I will have made seamless collages and/or videos from 280 Australian movies from 331 watched and I don't think I've hit half way of all of them. This does not include the 79 Australian movies that I capped in the pre-seamless pre-video era and will redo all of them when I have the time. Currently, there are large gaps between 1986-1992 that I need to make up plus most of the redux stuff is from the last decade plus the increase in the amount of movies out in the last 10 years also needs to be made up. Let's see how big of dent I can make into the remaining movies.

Till Human Voices Wake Us is a 2002 drama that follows two teenage friends Sam and Silvy (a young Brooke Harman) who live in a small country town in Victoria. Silvy needs to use calipers to walk and on the day of the local dance, Sam takes Silvy to the river and they both get in the water and after a momentary lapse, Sam loses Silvy and she disappears assumed drowned. Years later Sam (Guy Pearce) now teaches in a university in Melbourne, but when his father dies, he is drawn back to his home town for the funeral. On his way there, he spots a woman struggling in the river during a storm and he saves her. Calling herself Ruby (Helena Bonham Carter) fascinates Sam as she reminds him very much of Silvy and over the next day he spends as much time with Ruby to get back what he once had. But is she really SIlvy or even real? Hmmm, an interesting start gets mired down with the later plot which is far too obvious and predictable and not anywhere near as interesting. Apparently, this film was recut for American release and is told in flashback, but I don't think it would fix the predictability of the plot. Shame really...

11666kb 42sec 768x336 (breasts, sex scene)

Corroboree is a 2007 arty drama about a young man who is summoned to a country house by a mysterious and dying theatre director who asks him to interact with various women in different rooms of the house and act out various moments of the director's life. Oh, that's enough, this film really can't be expanded much further than that apart from the film seemingly feels like it's filming rehearsals and is every bit as bum-numbingly unwatchable as it sounds. There's some lengthy nudity and that's the only interest I have with this film. Bah!!

Jane McArthur in Corroboree

81954kb 3min 52sec 960x512 (full frontal and rear nudity, extremely lengthy)

The Underdog's Tale is a 2007 comedy about Eric, a man who seems to have it all, except he has serious issues that effects him having everything that he wants, including Louise (Sophie Cleary), who takes a shine to him, but then dumps him when he shows to have major anger issues. He's also broke most of the time and with his down and out friend and the unlawful inhabitance of an apartment, he looks to steal back Louise from a self-obsessed rival she is currently in love with. And his friend is about to have a bit of luck that could help him get what he wants. A little film that had the potential to be a good little comedy, but completely blows it with a final act which is so ridiculous that it completely sabotages all the good work that is done earlier in the film. Shame really...

Stone Bros. is a 2009 comedy about two Aboriginal friends who are trying to make a go of it in Perth. Eddie (Luke Carroll) is trying hard to make a go of it, but loses his latest job thanks to his wayward, spliff smoking mate Charlie (Leon Burchill). This is the last straw for Eddie and he decides he needs to go find his roots in Kalgoorlie and find himself while Charlie decides to tag along. Along the way, they pick up an Italian musician and their cousin who just happens to be a cross-dresser wannabe singer. Along the way, there are many hijinks to be had, most of them drug induced thanks to Charlie's massive stash and maybe Eddie might find what he is looking for.The comedy in the film is definitely more miss than hit and much of it is stoner based adds more to the miss side of things. While the story of Eddie (and possibly Charlie) finding himself is valid enough, it just doesn't gel with the type of comedy on display here, the mix feels off. Not a bad film as such, but not an overly successful film either.

Australian Classics for 20 July...

I said there was plenty of stuff to get to and here's a stack more.

Crosstalk is a 1982 thriller about computer specialist Ed (Gary Day) who has designed a system that has human-like characteristics. When Ed has a mysterious accident involving his brakes being cut, he is left handicapped, but still on a deadline to get the system ready. Also, the computer seems to be a bit of a voyeur and likes to spy on other people in the building. And, the computer has just spotted someone getting murdered in the building, then the computer goes haywire, repeating footage and voice samples to a befuddled Ed, but when he works it out, of course no one believes him, so he gets his nurse (Kim Deacon) to check out the apartment, just as the supposed killer comes home... Look familiar? Yep, this feels very much like a Rear Window knock-off, but because Rear Window is such a perfectly structured film, if you follow the structure close enough, you will come up with something half decent. And Crosstalk is not a bad film at all. The computer is like a character in the film and well, it actually feels like the most rounded character in the film. The actual actors don't add a whole lot, but aren't bad and the underlying mysterious company angle seems a little too complicated as to its motives and how it gets to them. Overall though, the film is well worth a look.

I also capped this film from a VHS source which is of OK quality, except the framing of the film is quite poor as you can tell from the videos below. Hopefully, there will be a DVD of this film, but I won't hold my breath.

The Odd Angry Shot is a 1979 war comedy about a group of soldiers trying to survive the boredom and the danger of the Vietnam War. Bill (John Jarratt) is going to war where he joins a platoon already well into the war. When they are not on duty, they are stuck in camp with not a lot to do but gamble and get drunk and avoid the clockwork like rain that constantly falls. And every once in a while they would come under mortar fire and the platoon would get casualties. So, all Bill has to do is survive his stint, even as his girl doesn't write to him. A bit like M*A*S*H, but with an Australian larrikin spirit, The Odd Angry Shot is a pretty damn good film with plenty of laughs, some quite tragic moments (poor John Hargreaves character cops a whole lotta shit) and a great ensemble of actors that round out this genuine Australian classic.

Mad Dog Morgan, ah Mad Dog Morgan, is a 1976 biographical drama about notorious bushranger Daniel Morgan (Dennis Hopper, yes Dennis Hopper at his most ridiculous best), an Irishman driven to robbing a stagecoach when his luck runs out in the goldfields. He is caught and sent to jail for 12 years where he is subjected to all sorts of horrors. On release, Morgan vows revenge on everyone who wronged him and because he is broke, he might as well robbed some folk as well. When Morgan is shot, he is nursed back to health by an Aborigine named Billy (David Gulpilil from Walkabout), who then joins forces with Morgan to help him escape from the encroaching traps (police), headed by a harsh Superintendent (Frank Thring, in fine form) and lead on the ground by Detective Manwaring (Jack Thompson). As Morgan heads to Victoria, he also seems to be given the support of many people who hate the traps and authority as much as he does. This, this is a bizarre film and I suppose that is why Troma were involved with it for a while. Dennis Hopper is so over the top (and possibly under the influence) that it's impossible not to shake your head in disbelief. And the director Philippe Mora (later of Howling 2 and 3, Communion) seems just as eccentric with some absolutely bizarre stuff going on. I wouldn't say this was a particularly good film, but one you should watch just for the sheer madness of it. And it contains the best final line in cinema history (And don't forget the scrotum...).

Shadows of the Peacock (Echoes of Paradise or whatever it's called this month), from director Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Clear and Pleasant Danger, Sliver, Salt etc. that's before I even mention his Australian movies), is a 1989 drama about Maria (Wendy Hughes, who else?), a wife of a politician (Steve Jacobs) with two kids (one played by a young Claudia Karvan) who discovers that her husband is having an affair and that it seems to be perfectly fine for this to happen. But, not for Maria. With her friend Judy (Peta Toppano), they go on a week holiday to Thailand and stay at a hotel run by an Australian ex-pat (Rod Mullinar) and that where Maria meets Raka (John Lone, who actually made this film before The Last Emperor, but it came out much later), a former Balinese dancer who runs a restaurant. Maria falls for Raka to the extent that decides to extend her stay in Thailand indefinitely, much to the annoyance of her husband. From there, a relationship develops between Maria and Raka that lasts for quite a while, even when Raka's former lover (Gillian Jacobs) warns her about him. And then Maria's husband comes to see what's going on... Solid film about a woman trying to find herself again and lets face it, Wendy Hughes couldn't be more perfectly cast here. But, this is in her no nudity period, so there's none of that nonsense going on here (see the Bob Ellis interview on the Warm Nights on a Slow Moving Train DVD to see how annoyed he was Wendy wouldn't do nudity anymore, it's a cracker). Although, didn't she get naked in Wild Orchid 2, I'm sure she did and that came after this during her Hollywood period.

Talking about actresses who got nude, question to anyone who might know better than me, has Peta Toppano gotten naked in a movie/TV show apart from that Feds telemovie which I doubt we'll ever see again? Man, there's some good nudity in those telemovies we'll never see again such as from Angie Milliken and that blonde girl in that one called Terror. And they're just the ones form the telemovies I remembered to watch late at night in the late 90s. Damn shame if we never see them again, even if they are terrible. And what about Chances..?

Australian Classics for 19 July...

As I've been mentioning numerous times recently, I've have a backlog of stuff related to this site. Firstly, there's the backlog in stuff I need to watch. Then, there's the backlog of stuff I need to cap and make videos of. And finally, there the backlog of stuff that I've capped but haven't been stuffed release for no particular reason. Over the next few days, that final category is going to have a massive dent in it as I finally get around to releasing a whole bunch of videos (and the occasional collage) from 'classic' Australian movies that I've watched over the past few years.

And there's plenty to get through...

Between Wars in a 1974 drama about an English doctor during World War I, Dr. Edward Trenbow (Corin Redgrave) who is left in charge of a fledgling psychiatric war of a military hospital, even though he knows little about psychiatry (mind you, psychiatry was still very much trial and error at this point of time). After the war, he is brought to a mental hospital and put in charge of the hospital where he meets a German doctor versed in Freud. Dr. Trenbow is then sent to Australia where he continues his work, only to walk away and start up a country practice and something about becoming a communist and I starting to bore myself, just like I did during my A Dangerous Method review. Yeah, I don't have an interest in psychiatry, but apparently neither does Dr. Trenbow. He seems to just float by as if he can't be bothered doing anything else, well until the whole communism thing in the 1930s comes along. He doesn't seem all that interested in defending his actions when charged with malpractice and doesn't seem all that interested in communism, his marriage and why not, life itself. I don't know what going on, but the doctor just seems to do things for something to do, it just bizarre. If only this was meant by the filmmakers, otherwise it would have been a far better film than this dated nonsense is serving up. Ah well, there's, bizarrely, a blow job scene in the film that comes out of nowhere. Hmmpgh, why not..?

Far East is a 1982 Manila in the Philippines set drama/thriller, basically an update of Casablanca, with Rick, now Morgan Keefe (a perfectly cast Bryan Brown), an Australia ex-pat and go-go bar owner that is popular with Australian tourists. And then one day, of all the go-go bars in Manila, in walks investigative journalist Peter Reeves (well known thesp John Bell) and his French accented lover Jo Reeves (Helen Morse, reteaming with Bryan Brown after the ultra successful A Town Like Alice remake). Of course, Morgan and Jo have a past and it's not long before they rekindle that flame they once had. Meanwhile, Peter is investigating local cheap labour and how they are exploited and is guided by Rosita. When Peter and Rosita are 'arrested' by local government thugs and are holed up in an undisclosed location, Jo begs Morgan to use his contacts to help get Peter and Rosita out. Of course, Morgan decides to do all his own dirty work with the help from some friends (including Bill Hunter looking very Bill Hunter), but maybe he has bitten off more than he can chew. From John Duigan, the director of Mouth To Mouth (see below) as well as numerous others (also mentioned below), this is a rather good 'reimagining' of Casablanca (of course not quite as good as Casablanca, a brilliant film if ever there was one), with great performance from the well chosen cast and a rather sad ending. If you're going to have a go at Casablanca, at least have a decent go at it and Far East does.

Innocent Prey is a 1984 horror thriller filmed both in the US and Australia about Cathy (P.J. Soles), who is suspicious of her cowboy husband (Kit Taylor, his character apparently from New Zealand, but that seems bizarre and I don't remember a mention of it). She follows him to a motel where she spies him fucking a prostitute and then slitting her throat (see below...). Horrified, Cathy dobs him in and he gets arrested and sent to a nuthouse, sorry, hospital for the criminally insane, where he promptly kills a guard and jumps a barbed wire fence as if it was nothing. He comes after Cathy, killing many cops along the way, but she fights him off and with the help of the good old sheriff (Martin Balsam, a long way from Psycho), she runs away to Australia to be with her friend Gwen (Susan Stenmark). Gwen lives in a house owned by a shy rich kid nutter Phillip who watches everyone via an amazing quality CCTV system set up around the house and property. Then, Cathy's husband tracks down Cathy to Australia and comes to get her, but there's a surprise waiting for him. A not all bad little horror film that makes some massive leaps in credibility (and I mean massive), but has a pretty good set up an intriguing third act. But, those leaps in credibility are quite large and stop Innocent Prey from being a good film. Ah well...

The Innocent Prey videos are captured from a VHS copy of the movie, so be warned of the quality, but this seems to be quite good quality. (now in DVD quality May 2024)

Mullaway (Mull) is a 1989 drama about a teenage girl Phoebe (Nadine Garner), affectionately known as Mull, who is thrust into a life she did not imagine after her mother dies. Mull is forced into looking after her younger brother and sister as her father (Bill Hunter) has shut himself away from the world. Mull attempts to live her life as normal, but it's a struggle. She falls for the singer of her older brother's band, but it turns out that he would rather her brother. Finally, Mull finds love with a plumber, but with her father and her demanding younger siblings will she be able to keep the relationship. Geez, it's been a while since I've seen the film so I'm a bit sketchy on it, but Nadine Garner was always worth watching during this period and here she carries the film with aplomb.

Update for 17 July...

How about a new Australian film?

Any Questions For Ben? is a Melbourne based comedy about Ben (Josh Lawson) who is in marketing and is well on the way in his life. He is restless, regularly changing jobs, apartments and girlfriends and when he is invited back to his high school to talk about his achievements to the current class, he feels at the top of his game. At the engagement, he meets an old friend Alex (Rachael Taylor), who works for the UN in the Middle East and when she speaks, she is adored by all. But, when Ben talks about marketing, he gets crickets (and so he should, fuck marketing...). Ben begins to believe that his life is meaningless and that he has become aimless. Throughout the next twelve months or so, we follow Ben with his friends as he tries to figure out what it all means and tries to get into a relationship with Alex, who pops in and out of his life throughout that time. I remember this film copped a bit of the pasting from the critics when released at the cinemas, mainly because it wasn't like the filmmaker's all-time Australian classic The Castle, a no budget charmer that is impossible to hate or their next film, The Dish. Any Questions For Ben? isn't that film (and nor should it be), it's a slick Hollywood-like comedy that still has plenty of laughs and likeable performance. No, it's not perfect, but hey it's better than most attempts at comedy made recently in Australia and deserves far more respect than it is getting. And who cares what the critics think, I enjoyed it.

And when I saw this film in the cinema (the only one in that cinema mind you, although the film didn't do that bad box office here, just nowhere near The Castle or The Dish), I nearly fell out my seat when in the last 20 minutes of the film, completely out of the blue, Rachael Taylor showed her breasts in a brief sex scene. That was completely unexpected...

Redux Friday falling on a Friday for once...

Collages and videos from The King now available here.

As promised, another redux series, this time from a 2006 series. And another one that has been sitting around on my hard drive, in fact it was recorded in late 2009 and I had made videos in mid-2010 (which I had redone this week), so 2 years later, here it is.

I seem to remember that The King was only ever released in anamorphic widescreen (which means it was widescreen inside the fullscreen area), thereby making it quite small. This was full widescreen, not great quality, but better than what I had, plus I doubt this film will ever be released on Bluray. Anyway...

Redux Friday on a Thursday..?

A two redux weekend which begins today with a film I completely forgot about until I found it on an abandoned hard drive. I don't remember much about Love the Hard Way from my first viewing except for Charlotte Ayanna's nude scene and that she was nipping out for a fair portion of the film. On second viewing, the film is quite a rough edged drama about the relationship between a straight-A college kid (Charlotte Ayanna) falling for a street smart hustler (Adrien Brody). And it's quite ugly to say the least. Pretty good film too, but not an easy watch. Anyway, always like Charlotte and went through a stretch in 2003 where I capped her from a few films, but not a lot since (well, there's that body double stuff from The Thirst).

Another tomorrow.

Australian Classics for 11 July...

Usually I'd drag out a quick update like this for a few weeks, but let's just get it out there.

Bootmen is a 2000 light comedy about two brothers Sean (Adam Garcia) and Mitchell (Sam Worthington), who both work in the steel mill in Newcastle with their dad and in their spare time, they do some tap dancing. A big city choreographer comes to the local studio and Sean and Mitchell are asked to audition for a show in Sydney and Sean, ever the showboat, ruins it for everyone by improvising (this will become a rather annoying theme throughout the film...). Afterwards, Sean is 'improvising' to impress local hairdresser Linda (Sophie Lee) and the choreographer has a change of heart and casts him in the show. This goes badly as Sean's 'improvising' to impress the lead dancer's girl gets him fired, just as Mitchell sleeps with Linda and Sean, of course, finds out. With nothing much else to do, Sean devises a plan to set up his own tap show that will go around the country and gets some of the local tappers together. Eventually, Sean and Linda make up and so do Sean and Mitchell which means Mitchell can join the dance troupe. Everything is going well, but an ongoing feud between Mitchell and a local hothead Huey (Anthony Hayes) has tragic consequences which will put the show on hold indefinitely, until the steel mill is to be shut down... Hmm, OK, maybe a movie about tapdancing isn't my cup of tea, but Bootmen is so desperate to make itself seem not gay that it effects the entire film. But, what for? Who cares about the sexual orientation of the dancer, just fuckin' dance? When people are watching dancers, surely they are not thinking about their sexuality. Sheesh... Anyway, nothing special going on here, everything is by-the-numbers, you know how it's going to go, just like the hundreds of films before it. I'm sure the dancing is great, I wouldn't know, whatever...

Oh, and Sophie Lee, what would the 90s be without you? Terrible I suppose.

Australian Classics for 9 July...

This update was lost in the hub-bub of everything and should've been out weeks ago, but as is typical of this site, it got delayed along with some other series I should have up soon... or some time next year....

Mouth To Mouth is a 1978 Melbourne set drama about a group of young people who are caught on the outskirts of society. Carrie (Kim Krejus) and Jeanie (Sonia Peat) are teenage girls living in a girl's refuge but are having problems with both the people running the refuge and other girls living in the refuge. So, they run away and squat at an abandoned house. Tim and Sergio are down in Melbourne from Ballarat and are looking for work, but are having no luck. They don't have anywhere to live, but they hook up with Carrie and Jeanie. After been kicked out of Sergio's cousin's place, the four head back to the abandoned house and struggle to get by. The boys are no help, betting their welfare money away. Carrie and Jeanie, who have just finished their temp jobs help out by stealing and looking for other jobs, but only find the worse jobs out there. Inevitably, Carrie and Jeanie turn to prostitution, although Jeanie doesn't take to it, but Carrie gets more heavily involved which ends one night in tragedy (of sorts). A pretty grim look at society's outsiders from now internationally recognised director John Duigan (The Year My Voice Broke, Flirting, Wide Sargasso Sea, Lawn Dogs, Paranoid, Head in the Clouds and of course, Sirens), that is familiar territory, but gets by with some great acting from the four leads. There's no real happy endings here, but the film feels real enough and actually doesn't seem all that dated (well, apart from the usual 70s things), as the themes are still the same today. Recently released on DVD for the first time, Mouth To Mouth is an interesting look at how the other half attempt to live, worth a look if you don't mind it grim.

Also, I've had a look at John Duigan's latest film, Careless Love, this time about an university student of Vietnamese Australian descent who goes into prostitution (hmm, sounds familiar) to help pay for her parent's mortgage and gets caught up in something much bigger that will end badly for her. And by badly, I mean in a way that would completely halt everything in her life, something she was desperately avoiding. Careless Love is an OK film that takes a while to find itself, anyway, there is some nudity in the film from Nammi Le, not a lot, two scenes actually, just her bum in one and full frontal nudity while in a bath in the other. Nammi also has a number of scenes in her underwear, I reckon close to if not more than 10 scenes, plus there's an underwear scene from Ivy Mak plus Ivy has a sex scene over the bonnet of a car. No idea when it comes out on DVD, the movie sort of floated in and out of one cinema here in Melbourne a month or so ago.

Australian Classics Redux for 7 July...

As promised, a high quality redo of an Australian film.

It's funny but I don't remember watching Welcome to Woop Woop the first time around. I remember it got well and truly trounced by the critics and didn't do well at the box office, even considering it was the follow up from the director of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, a major hit here in Australia (they're even currently making a TV show to find cast members for the stage play). But, Welcome to Woop Woop is something else entirely. Taking just about every busted up cliche about the dead heart of Australia and bizarrely adding Rodgers and Hammerstein songs, this film is an unholy mess that isn't without it charm (even if it feels out of place here). The major problem is that the film hammers the Aussie ocker cliche to death and it just gets embarrassing and then it never ends. The best I can say is that at least it has a go at something that wildly out there, even if it fails for the most part.

The collages and videos below are taken from a recent showing on Channel 9's HD channel and I'm well known around here for bagging out Channel 9 for their terrible scheduling and appalling attempts at Australian drama, but one thing that they have always done well is playing movies uncut (well, after a certain time) and in the correct aspect ratio, which is something the other commercial channels still mess up regularly. Hell, they even showed Alvin Purple on the HD channel recently, I'll have to check whether it's was uncut, but it looked pretty close to it.

By the way, the director's latest film, A Few Best Men, has nothing cappable in it. And boy, there are quite a few similarities to Welcome to Woop Woop, thankfully, there's a few more broader laughs in it.

I know I said with the main site down, I wouldn't cap anything from movies unless it was pressing, well, this seemed pretty pressing to me...

Regular visitors to my site would know that I've liked Tuppence since I saw her in her first movie, the forgettable dead bullied boy gets revenge on the cast of Skins horror thriller Tormented, then through Skeletons, Chatroom and a couple of episodes of the UK ambo comedy/drama Sirens.

Now, when I saw the news a few months that she was nude in Cleanskin, I thought, yeah, that's great. Then I saw the just released videos and I thought, well, that's fantastic, I wait for a HQ version and cap it in the coming weeks. When I saw the Bluray for Cleanskin was available today, I couldn't resist. So, here it is

By the way, Cleanskin is a pretty solid little terrorist thriller focusing on both sides of a soon to be terrorist attack that may be much more than meets the eyes. There's a pretty memorable moment where someone is shot in the head while in mid-air to add to the Tuppence nudity (um, that's not the price...). And that strange shower scene where she has patches on her breasts even though she shows her breasts in an earlier scene...
