Update for 26 February...

GirlHouse is a slasher movie where Kylie (Ali Cobrin) is moving out of her dorm to a house settled by webcam models to become one herself, as she is broke and needs the money. Her introduction to the house goes extremely well, attracting the interest of many of the regulars including loner Loverboy (Slaine) and is found by Ben (Adam DiMarco), someone who went to school with Kylie and had a major crush on her. This gives Ben the courage to ask Kylie out, which she accepts, but also causes Ben to have a problem with her new profession. Loverboy has a private session with Kylie, who breaks through the heavy security and manages to send a picture of himself to her, which is then stolen by a wayward model and posted on the house's notice board. When Loverboy spots this and the offensive message scrawled on it, he goes berserk and begins a rampage that begins by killing all of the website's online security controllers and torturing the owner of the site and continues with Loverboy invading the webcam house and one by one, killing the models, just as Kylie returns home from college. Ben and his GirlHouse obsessed friend Alex (Wesley MacInnes) attempt to save Kylie (and possibly the other girls), but they don't know where the house is and the police are no help. Can they save the girls in time? OK slasher movie that is fairly similar to the recent House of Bodies, although there really isn't much different you can do with the people trapped in a house with the stalker story. Ali Cobrin is well cast in the lead as the nice girl led astray (of sorts, although the film does make it clear it has reservations about what she is doing) and does a great job, just wish in the reveal scene where all the site audience and fellow models are impressed by her breasts that you actually saw them. I know, we did in American Reunion and they are indeed impressive, but it definitely would have added something more to that scene. The stalking slasher stuff is not bad either and it does end with one great line and a fairly reasonable resolution. If I have a real problem with the movie, it's that so much is made of the website's and house's impenetrable security, but Loverboy is able is move within the website without been noticed, despite been quite active in the website's code and the physical security is a joke. Oh and did someone say Michael Myers...

Update for 24 February...

Haunting of the Innocent is a horror thriller where Brenda (Jessica Morris), her husband Tom (Rib Hillis) and their son move back to her hometown from Los Angeles after Brenda is raped in her own home. They move in with her father Erik (Neil Dickson) and settle in to small town life. But, something is amiss. Both Brenda and Tom start dreaming about a strange witch Beyla (Hannah Cowley) who seems to plans to do something to both but is also sexually attracted to the couple. What does Beyla want and what family secret is she very much a part of. Oh boy, this film is a complete mess and I have no idea what it's supposed to mean. After the first ten minutes of the movie, this film runs around in circles, going absolutely nowhere for a good 40 minutes putting in absolutely every 'cool' idea they could come up with. So a witch fights a viking, what of it? Apparently the townsfolk are a cult, but there's only one interaction with the townsfolk and the scene is so baffling, I think it's just an excuse for another idea to happen that sounded cool but has nothing to do with the plot. Then the sex starts up, none of which makes sense, but at least there's something to distract from the nonsense story about vikings and witches which never seems to end. The baffling stuff just doesn't end, a scene with Tom going back to his old firm, which includes a pointless cameo from Judd Nelson, ends with the girl he was having an affair with have a breakdown because he won't fuck her. Ah, whatever, it's terrible and there's another baffling scene to watch...

Update for 23 February...

Northern Soul is a 70s set British drama about school boy John (Elliot Langridge) who is having a hard time fitting in with his peers. One day, he finally takes his mother's advice and goes to the youth club where the people there are dancing to American soul music, which John had never seen or heard before and instantly becomes attracted to it when he sees Matt (Josh Whitehouse) dancing up a storm. John and Matt become friends and end up living together at Matt's house after John quits school and they take up a job at the local cake factory. But what they really want to do is become DJs running dance nights as that is all they talk about. Now joined by mad man Sean (Jack Gordon), they look to start up their own nights and impress local hotshot DJ Ray Henderson (James Lance). Meanwhile, they are trying out meth, getting themselves into trouble and John manages to finally start talking to the girl he has a crush on, Angela (Antonia Thomas). As time goes on, John and Matt begin to have different ideas as to how they go about DJ with John looking to take it seriously while Matt is all about getting a great crowd on the dance floor and is quite profane to this end. This causes friction between the two. OK drama that is an interesting look at the dance halls of the 70s in the northern UK and how they were changing, but the movie is much better when it focuses on the music scene than all the hardship and violence in between. Much of that didn't feel sketched out at all, particularly how John's worrisome parents don't seem to care when he leaves home to live with someone he just met.

Update for 21 February...

Starry Eyes is a horror drama set in Los Angeles where aspiring actress Sarah (Alexandra Essoe) is struggling to get any roles and is making ends meet by working at a Hooters knock-off, Big Taters. She shares an apartment with friend Tracy (Amanda Fuller) and with others living at the apartment complex, they are waiting for their break or for when Danny (Noah Segan) can finally get his movie off the ground. One day, Sarah applies for a role in an Astraeus Pictures production, a well-known horror production house and she gets called in to audition, which ends up being weird and inevitably goes terribly for Sarah. Afterwards while in the toilets, she admonishes herself, which is spotted by one of the producers and she asks Sarah back into the casting room to repeat what she did. This impresses the two producers and Sarah gets a callback a few days later, quits her job and goes to the next audition, where she reluctantly strips naked when asked, but this induces something in her that impresses the producers and she gets to meet the head of the studio. He asks her to have sex with him, which she refuses and she runs away, back to where she started. But, this has got her thinking what if she went ahead and had sex with the head of the studio? It could give her everything she always wanted as he promised as such. So, she calls back promising that she is ready, but after the deed is done, Sarah becomes violently ill, as if decaying and her behaviour becomes erratic. What has become of Sarah and what will happen to her? Interesting little movie that has a different take on fame and is actually pretty creepy for the most part. Alexandra Essoe is great in the lead and embodies the desperation of wanting to be famous no matter what perfectly. The film becomes extremely dark towards the end, possibly more than it had too, but the set up is intriguing and is complimented by an excellent synth score which adds to the intrigue. Synth music fits L.A. films perfectly, it just has that feel about it. A great little film that is something a little different and well worth a look.

A couple of redos I was going to release last week, but I stuffed up somewhere along the line, so I had to go back and fix it. Ah well, it's out now.

Gee, Crying Freeman is 20 years old already and giving it my once every ten years rewatch, it certainly looks like a 90s movie, very influenced by John Woo too like action movies of the era seemed to be. And Julie Condra doesn't act any more, such a shame, I remember her from The Wonder Years and Parker Lewis Can't Lose when I was a teenager. Just had a quick look and she was only in a few episodes of each. Seemed like a lot more than that. Yôko Shimada also did some really shonky Japanese AV stuff a few years back and by that I mean it was made to look like real sex but looks totally fake. Who knows, that stuff is all pixellated anyway. Still looks great for someone well into her 50s, so there's that...

Australian Classics for 16 February...

Back in the early 90s, Linda Blair came to Australia and made a couple of cheap genre flicks. They are a part of today's Australian Classics update.

Dead Sleep is a 1990 thriller from the makers of Bloodmoon (it's been 5 years since I capped that!) where out of work nurse Maggie (Linda Blair) takes a job at a psychiatric hospital under hostile nursing head Sister Kereby (Christine Amor, naked in Bloodmoon) where a radical therapy treatment under heavy sedation is run by the respected Dr. Jonthan Heckett (Tony Bonner). One day, an annoying crusading journalist Thena Fuery (Vassy Cotsopoulos) enters the hospital with the husband of one of the patients and demands his wife's release, which occurs two days later after coming out of heavy sedation. After her trial is up, Maggie is upgraded to the night shift and working closely with the doctor in the sedation ward, which goes well despite some reservations about shocking patients during sedation. But one night, a patient who'd been supposedly doing fine dies while under sedation while the doctor is away and Maggie decides to quit her job and make a complaint about the patient's death. But, it is buried by an incompetent bureaucracy. An ex-boyfriend Hugh (Andrew Booth), who'd being angling to get back with her, is arrested on drug charges and decides to undertake therapy at Dr. Heckett's hospital instead of going to jail, but he comes out of the hospital zombie-like and ends up drowning in a lake in his parent's backyard. Maggie is now convinced that Heckett is shonky and she goes to Thena for help, who tells her of possibly 50+ deaths related to the therapy (50 deaths! Jesus, how many before someone important takes notice). Maggie decides to help Thena uncover the truth and re-enlists back as a nurse at the hospital. When the doctor finds out Maggie's motives, it's a race against time and the now psychotic doctor to not only uncover the truth, but survive. Bizarrely off-kilter movie that attempts to mix serious drama with sleaze and never really marries it well. In fact it's the serious drama that seems off in this movie, maybe because it isn't really well done with time periods zipping by without much of a mention, could be a few months, could be a couple of hours, there's no sense as to how long anything takes. And Maggie's motives are constantly misplaced; at one time she seems very concerned, but at another she just wants to move on. The ending is pure B-grade filth, which is actually the best thing about it because Tony Bonner really lets loose, but as I said, this sort of stuff is completely out of place with the rest of the movie. Dead Sleep is not as terrible as I'd been led to believe, but it's still a poor movie with some reasonable performances.

Fatal Bond is a 1991 thriller where 'Joe Martinez' (Jerome Ehlers), not his real name, who after escaping the clutches of the police, walks into a bar and sees a birthday party, buys the birthday girl a drink and then punches out her boyfriend when he objects. Leonie (Linda Blair), who is at the party, sees this an promptly leaves with Joe, has sex with him and before you know it, is joining him going up north for work. But Joe, when he's not evading capture by the police, likes the women and at their first stop, spies a pretty young girl (the very cute Penny Pederson) and arranges to meet her that night, which he does. But, the next morning, her dead body is found, but by now he has left town. When Leonie sees the next day's newspaper with the girl's death on the front page, she shows it to him for his reaction, but he doesn't even care. Could he be the killer? All signs point to him and the dead girl's boyfriend (Ross Newton, Bobby's husband on Home and Away) has an alibi. When he hyper-religious father (Stephen Leeder) finds a photo of Joe, he's convinced he has his daughter's killer and promises an 'eye for an eye' as he goes off looking for him with his son Shane (Teo Gebert) not far behind. Meanwhile, Joe is at his old friend's Rocky (Donal Gibson, Mel's brother) who gets him work stealing cars for his chop shop so that his crazy-arse mechanic Claw ('Aussie' Joe Bugner) can rebirth them. Also, Leonie is becoming more weary of Joe (geez, really!) when another dead body is found close by and she tries to cover it up, poorly. Claw eventually gets weary of Joe and Rocky and they find this out when the actual Joe, brother of the fake Joe, is found dead and Claw comes with vengeance. But, the hyper-religious father is now in town and after giving Leonie a life back to her place, notices Joe's car and know he is now close. But the police are also gaining... Holy shit, this is a clusterfuck of a movie. I would go as far as to say it's one of the most bonkers stories I've ever seen, but the more I think about it, the more I think it may have been meant to be this ridiculous. How else can you explain a character who always carries around a bible and cross? Is he hunting vampires on the side? Joe and Leonie's relationship is completely laughable, it only seems to make sense when they fuck. The ending is even more ridiculous than Dead Sleep and the killer makes zero sense. And if that's the case, who killed the second girl? I know Phillip Avalon movies are usually pretty low rent, but I quite liked Summer City, his first movie, but it's sequel is utterly appalling. I don't know what to make of Fatal Bond. A part of me wants to call it one of the worst movies ever made in Australia, but I was never bored watching it because it's completely bonkers. It makes no sense, but Jerome Ehlers, who tragically died last year, is actually quite good and plays 'Joe' as the right way. Linda Blair gets naked, nothing to complain about there. And how can you admonish a movie where 'Aussie' Joe Bugner goes apeshit and tears the place apart. And that scene where he rebirths the car Formula One style is hilarious. Fatal Bond is totally shit, but...

As with all Australian Classics, the quality of the source material may not be the greatest because of its availability. Dead Sleep is from the US NTSC DVD, which is not bad I guess, but it'll never be released in Australia, so it'll do. Fatal Bond is from a VHS copy and I gotta say one of the better VHS copies I've capped from. It's almost DVD quality which is great as it's another movie that will never get a DVD release here. Also, I could've sworn I saw half of Dead Sleep during its possibly only TV showing after midnight on Channel 10 in the mid-90s and it had a group shower scene in it, but it isn't on the copy I watched. I remember Tony Bonner unbuttoning Peta Downes shirt to reveal her breasts vividly and this shower scene, but it's not there. Must've mixed it up with some other movie. Also, I'd love to see more from that cutie Penny Pederson from Fatal Bond, but her resume is very brief, mostly TV guest roles I've skipped over with nothing memorable, but she was in Floating Life, which I remember watching on SBS back in the day, might be worth seeking out.

Update for 14 February...

Julia is a rape revenge thriller set in New York where Julia (Ashley C. Williams from The Human Centipede) goes to a bloke's house on the assumption of a date, only to be drugged, gang-raped and left for dead. She struggles back home and struggles to cope with it all. One evening while drinking in a bar, she overhears a conversation where one girl describes that a friend had improved dramatically after going to radical therapy to get over her rape. After being laughed at by the person who told the story, she is tracked down by Sadie (Tahyna Tozzi) who gets her into intense therapy which is a combination of therapy sessions from Dr. Sgundud (Jack Noseworthy) and how to attract men lessons from Sadie. Things are going well, even moreso when Julia, Sadie and members of the doctor's clandestine group ritualistically kill the man who set up her sexual assault. But, something triggers in Julia, who is now very friendly with Sadie and she castrates and murders a man. Meanwhile, Adam (Brad Koed), a reluctant member of the group that raped Julia and helped her live when left for dead, walks into the surgery where she works and attempts to make amends with her. But, Julia is too far gone and uses him to set up the rest of her revenge. Sadie tells the doctor about Julia's behaviour and he decides to end her therapy permanently. Except... Yeah, rape revenge movies are all pretty much the same except for say the level of violence in the humiliation and/or revenge. Julia is a pretty violent movie including a graphic castration scene (oh joy...), but decides to only briefly show the rape scene. But, it's point of difference is probably it's major downfall. The whole therapy cult thing seems way too far-fetched, particularly as it's never really elaborated on and leads to a fairly ridiculous ending and the doctor's motive are pretty batshit crazy as well. But, where the film works well is in the transformation of Julia from mousy victim to unstoppable predator. The relationship between Julia and Sadie works well and both actresses are pretty good if completely glum (particularly impressed with Tozzi's flawless American accent, it probably helps that neither Julia or Sadie say all that much). Worth a look if you're into the genre, but by no means a classic. Watch out though, it's castration happy...

Update for 12 February...

Love is Now is a romantic drama where aspiring photographer Dean (Eamon Farren) briefly meets Audrey (Claire van der Boom) as he serves her at a shop where he works. He would like to meet her again, but doesn't know her name, but as luck would have it, he has stolen an invitation from a prominent photographer after a terrible job interview and goes to the showing which is of Audrey's photos. There is an instant attraction between them and Audrey convinces Dean to go on a biking holiday along the Harvest Trail to complete a trip she took two years before. Along the way they would take photos and do some fruit picking for a little extra cash. At the first farm, Audrey begins to flirt with the head picker James (Dustin Clare), which Dean vehemently dislikes and fractures begin to show up in their relationship which are exacerbated when Audrey calls up James to meet her at a pub along the way. She cools that fire, but at the next farm all is not well and Dean himself becomes flirty with another picker. When Audrey disappears after a party, Dean frantically looks for her, but all is not as it seems. OK movie that is very much in the mould of those Nicholas Sparks books/movies where love is eternal and there's a massive unnecessary twist because love is everything or something, I dunno. While it's a pretty easy watch, the central relationship is totally frustrating, the type of relationship that starts at 100 miles per hour and then peters out while still trying to go at the same speed. Yeah, you've probably gathered I'm not much into these type of movies, but I was never bored, just frustrated.

Update for 11 February...

My Mistress is an Australian drama about 16 year-old Charlie (Harrison Gilbertson), who finds his father hanging in the garage while everyone else is enjoying the Christmas party inside the house. He doesn't handle his father's death well and is becoming distant from his mother (Rachael Blake) and begins to become fascinated with a French woman Maggie (Emmanuelle Béart), who has moved into the neighbourhood. One day, he enters her house an finds out that she is a dominatrix. When she advertises for a gardener, Charlie forces his way into the job, which she reluctantly agrees. Charlie also forces Maggie into dominating him, but over time, they become closer and their relationship develops, but they are both harbour emotional trauma and both will have to come to terms with this. Also, Charlie's mother finds out about their relationship and does not approve and causes even deeper ructions between Charlie and his mother. Interesting take on grieving, but boy, this is a tough watch, nothing but neverending depressing behaviour. So, that means Emmanuelle Béart is well cast because if there's one thing she does well, it's being depressing. Update for 9 February...

Kite is a thriller based on a Japanese anime movie where Sawa (India Eisley) is an one girl killing machine who is getting revenge on the people who killed her mother and father with the help of his former partner Karl (Samuel L. Jackson, on cruise control). Sawa is desperate to find and kill The Emir, but must work her way through various criminal networks to find him. As she leaves a trail of dead behind, she befriends Oburi (Callan McAuliffe), who has a connection to her past that maybe key to finding out the truth about the death of her parents. And it's becoming increasingly clear that someone is setting her up for their own gain. Rather pointless movie that is light on plot and seems more interested in destruction, which is fine, but we are thrust immediately into the plot at about halfway through the story where we are then told everything that went on before it as exposition, which bogs the movie down until we are drip fed the key parts to the story over the rest of the movie. Also, the story is that old boring revenge for parent's death plot that now seems to be standard. Sadly, this movie just isn't interesting enough even with some OK action scenes.

Update for 7 February...

Son of a Gun is an Australian thriller mostly set in Western Australia where JR (Brenton Thwaites) is about to begin a 6 month sentence in jail. He attempts to befriend notorious prisoner Brendan (Ewan McGregor), but Brendan is having none of that until a threat is made to JR from another prisoner. Brendan gets his two buddies Sterlo (Matt Nable) and Merv (Eddie Baroo) to finish the threat and JR is allowed to join the group. After his release, JR puts together Brendan's plan to help the group escape from prison. After Brendan gets rid of Merv for an indiscretion, he, JR and Sterlo head to Sam's (Jacek Koman) place to lay low and set up their next heist. JR meets Tasha (Alicia Vikander), a young woman who seems to have run of the house and they fall for each despite warnings from Brendan. The gang are joined by getaway driver Chris (Nash Edgerton) and Sam's idiot son Josh (Tom Budge) on the heist of 6 gold bars, which goes well until it becomes clear that Sam set them up. Brendan wants what's his and with the help of JR, who now has Tasha tagging along, they come to Melbourne to steal back the gold for themselves. But, there is a neverending number of people that want it for themselves. Familiar, but not bad little heist thriller made better by a pretty good performance from Ewan McGregor. The movie suffers from far too many twists including a final twist which stretches credibility and much is made of JR's inability to swim, a lazy plot device you just know that was going to feature in the ending. But, the movie moves along well and is a pretty easy watch.

That time of the week again when I redo some old series to better quality. Gee, it's been almost 11 years since I first capped Unfaithful and this is the first time I've capped videos from it. Dark City apparently has a Director's Cut which is 11 minutes longer, which this has been capped from. My original version is from a TV showing and is in a different aspect ratio. With this version, it's in 2:35 widescreen and you see a little more in the frame in the Melissa George nude scene, but nothing is added to the scene nudity wise although just watching both, they seem to slightly different scenes overall.

Update for 4 February...

Geez, another Canadian movie, what's up with that?

The Scarehouse is a horror movie where Corey (Sarah Booth) and Elaina (Kimberly-Sue Murray) set up a 'scare house' under the guise that it's for a sorority party for a college sorority that the girls were once attempting to become members of. Corey and Elaina have spent two years in jail for the accidental death of a man they were playing a prank on to get them into the sorority and now they want revenge. One by one, they torture, dismember and attempt to kill various members of the sorority that abandoned them and left them out to fend for themselves. Not much more than that, which inevitably means that the movie is fairly repetitive, nasty and boring as most movies obsessed with torture usually are because torture is boring. It's also hard to feel much sympathy for the killers as they were stupid enough to go along with the dumb prank to begin with. Probably could've done with a more overt sense of humour, there are some attempts at jokes, but not nearly enough to say that was the intention. Inevitably, as with most 'torture porn', it's all about the torture and never about the story. At least it girl-on-girl torture so we don't have to hear the cries of misogyny. Yawn...

Update for 2 February...

A few quick movies today, two Canadian and one Spanish.

88 is a confusing comedy thriller about a girl (Katharine Isabelle) who is trying to work out why she is in the situation she is in and who killed her boyfriend. Told in two different timelines, just to confuse things further, the timelines fuse into one another somehow. No idea how this all fits together, but it has some moments. Wolves is a werewolf thriller where a high school football star finds out he's a werewolf (hey, Teen Wolf!) and may have possibly killed his parents. He is directed to a town that is run by one group of werewolves who prefer to be human while been hunted by another group of werewolves, where the head of the group wants a son to continue his legacy, but the football star leads the town to stop this from happening. Silly stuff that ends up with a confused villain and feels more like a TV pilot that didn't get picked up. Some nice nudity though from Merritt Patterson. El Nino is about a young Spanish man who becomes a drug courier for a drug run between Africa and Gibraltar. It also follows two cops determined to stop this from happening and take down the head of the operation. Nothing new, but pretty watchable nonetheless.

Update for 1 February...

Catching up on the movie side.

White Reindeer is a pitch black comedy about Susan (Anna Margaret Hollyman) who is lovingly married to her TV weatherman husband and about to move to Hawaii with his job when one night a month before Christmas, she comes home and finds him shot dead. Susan's world comes crashing down, but it's about to get worse when his friend confides in her that he was secretly having an affair with a stripper named Autumn (Laura Lemar-Goldsborough). As she tries to process this information, she decides to confront Autumn, but instead of finding rage, she befriends her and gets caught up in Autumn's (actual name Fantasia) world of partying and other things Susan would never dream of doing in her buttoned down suburban housewife life. Susan is struggling to cope but her newfound partying ways maybe helping her overcome her grief or making it that much worse. Very much in the mould of those independent movies Joe Swanberg makes (unsurprisingly, he turns up as a swinger husband) with a big shit-eating grin on its face, White Reindeer has a good idea but the tone is so smug that I found it hard to like when even some interesting stuff happens. Anna Margaret Hollyman is pretty good here and usually does good work and the conceit is solid, but White Reindeer has that air of 'we're just fucking with you' which is just hard to like. No more so than that horrible swingers scene and that ending. Oh well, nice try, but no dice.
