Australian Classic Redux for 24 November...

Capped this movie back in 2006 from a late night TV broadcast, in which the movie was entitled My Forgotten Man, amongst other names it has had. Also possibly the only time the movie played widely in Australia as it was apparently pulled just before the movie was to be released in 1993 and then Boulevard Films went broke and never got a proper release. I got this from a 1 cent British DVD. Big spender...

Flynn is the filmed in 1989-1990, released sometime after 1993 biopic of Errol Flynn (Guy Pearce), a plucky Tasmanian kid and son of a famous biology professor who is sent to boarding school in Sydney before getting kicked out for having sex with the headmaster's daughter (apparently). Errol sets off into the world and after a hiccup at his first job, is on the streets until he worms his way into the birthday party for Penelope Watts (Claudia Karvan) and eventually they become engaged. Errol's always got big intentions and sees that gold has been found in Papua New Guinea, so he steals a prized piece of jewellery from Penelope, sells it and heads to PNG, completely unprepared and out of his depth. He summons the help of a mysterious German man, Klaus Reicher (Steven Berkoff), who sort of helps him and sort of get him into trouble. Errol does find gold, but it is stolen from him, so sick of being the victim, Errol gets Klaus to help him do the robbing. After one heist, they are captured by the natives. Errol can't help himself and has his way with the chief's daughter and when he and Klaus escape the village, Errol shoots dead one of the tribesman, for which he is tried for murder, jailed, but escapes with the help of Klaus and decides to head back to Australia, where he falls into acting, isn't very good, but hears word that an unknown actor is to be in the new Charles Chauvel movie, Mutiny on the Bounty. Well, Errol sees an opportunity to impersonate the unknown actor and convinces Chauvel that he is that actor and you know the rest of the story. Bizarre and underdone biopic that shows clear signs of padding and re-shoots. Pearce tries valiantly in an early role, but isn't given much help by the underdone and surprisingly sex-filled (but not the way you'd think) script. And it clearly looks like Flynn's life has been patched up from tidbits of information, some of which are clearly embellished or possibly false. There's also an astonishing amount of ADR exposition going on for a professionally made movie that would look sloppy in a no budget movie let along a multi-million dollar production. In all Flynn/My Forgotten Man is a big mess and manages to botch telling the rather interesting life of Errol Flynn. A poor movie and it shows...

There'd be a great book about Boulevard Films if someone would be bothered to write it. Frank Howson must have a million stories, a few he tells on the surprisingly great Boulevard of Broken Dreams DVD. According to Wikipedia (don't look at me like that), Claudia Karvan quite brief role was originally shot by Rebecca Rigg, which would be interesting with they shot the same scenes as Claudia has some brief nudity in the movie (her first shot nudity, I think) and I'm pretty sure that Rebecca Rigg has never had a nude scene although I haven't seen some stuff (Raw Nerve for one) and she barely acts any more except it seems with her husband Simon Baker or her friend Naomi Watts. She does have a sex scene in Tunnel Vision which I should bust out and recap at some stage. Such a shame...

Update for 23 November...

After Friday's Lindsay Lohan update I thought, 'Hey, I've got The Canyons around here somewhere, should have a look at that'. So, here it is...

The Canyons is a drama about a young couple Tara and Christian (Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen) who are out to dinner with Christian's producer partner Gina (Amanda Brooks) and her boyfriend and lead in the movie they are making, Ryan (Nolan Funk). Christian notices that Tara is behaving differently throughout the dinner and decides to start tailing her as he's convinced that she's cheating on him with Ryan. Not that Christian is faithful at all to Tara, having regular dalliances with his 'yoga teacher' Cynthia (Tenille Houston), but Christian begins to ramp up the pressure on Tara too. Christian doesn't seem to have a problem with Tara having sex with other guys as she regularly does in his company, it's just that Christian thinks Ryan is lowlife actor scum, beneath them all and he doesn't want to be second fiddle to this guy. Christian's paranoia grows deeper and when he finds out that Ryan has a connection to his 'yoga teacher', he puts into play a plan where he will get what he wants and get rid of Ryan, well, so he thinks... Written by Bret Easton Ellis and quite obviously so as there's nothing but selfish arseholes in this movie and just as I didn't like The Informers, The Canyons had a similar effect on me. I just couldn't get over Christian's appalling hypocritical behaviour, but it's impossible to feel sympathy for any of the victims either. Usually, I don't mind movies about miserable selfish characters, but it must be the Bret Easton Ellis effect because I just can't stand his arseholes, they're on another level. Ugh...

Update for 17 November...

A couple of quick series today.

Gutshot Straight is a thriller about a degenerate gambler Jack (George Eads) who is near rock bottom when he meets Duffy (Stephen Lang) at a casino and offers him a job. With some reluctance, Jack accepts the offer and meets Duffy at a strip club where after a night of debauchery, they go back to Duffy's mansion and he offers Jack $10,000 to have sex with the girl living at the house, May (AnnaLynne McCord). Duffy'll double it if he can watch, which Jack does not like and after Duffy gives him a beating, he wakes up, sees May in a hot tub and has his way with her, only for Duffy to come back and offer the money again. Jack and Duffy tussle which ends with Duffy accidentally dying. With the help of May, they cover it up, but the next day, Jack remembers that he left his wallet at the house, so he goes back to get it and is met by Lewis (Ted Levine), who's very interested in Jack even though he's never met him. Lewis takes a special interest in Jack and it seems he just can't escape Duffy, even in death. Bizarre little noir thriller that has two bizarre characters in Duffy and Lewis who are the best things about this movie because Jack is pretty unlikeable. Also has cameos from Steven Seagal and Vinnie Jones, who are barely in the movie and Steven Seagal is near unwatchable nowadays anyway, particularly with that hair, I don't know what's going on there. Interesting characters in Duffy and Lewis, but nothing special otherwise.

Ghost Bride is a supernatural thriller about Jason (Yoson An) whose mother is dying and she wants him to meet a Chinese mystic Madam Yin, who will help him find his wife. Jason is reluctant as he has a girlfriend Skye (Rebekah Palmer) and he is very happy with her, but he decides to go through with the ceremony. He is introduced to May-Ling, but does not continue a relationship with her, preferring to ask Skye for her hand in marriage, which she accepts. There's just one thing, May-Ling is a ghost and a vengeful one at that and she will have Jason, no matter what. Fairly stock standard stuff, bordering on poor with some stiff leads, but is saved from being completely rubbish by a pretty decent third act twist that finally brings something interesting to the tale. Otherwise, not really worth it.

Update for 11 November...

The Human Contract is a drama about corporate high-flyer Julian (Jason Clarke), who's about to complete a 5 billion dollar deal for his company but they are a family oriented company and it is insisted that he doesn't finalise his pending divorce. While waiting for a date, he meets Michael (Paz Vega) and they hit it off, but they go their separate ways. A few days later, he sees her again and they get together and they get along real well. Both Julian and Michael are holding secrets for each other which will complicate the relationship. It also turns out that Michael is married, but they have an open relationship, which Julian doesn't like, but begrudgingly accepts. There's something about Michael that is setting Julian off and he starts to exhibit erratic behaviour which leads to an incident which will cause all of Julian's secrets to come out, threaten to end their relationship and threaten the deal his company is about to sign. Interesting movie from Jada Pinkett Smith (?!) with both Clarke and Vega doing a pretty good job steering the movie and also with some pretty decent chemistry in a fairly complicated relationship. The movie does meander on a bit with most of the stuff outside of the relationship seeming more superfluous than necessary, particularly the work stuff. Also, Julian's marriage is barely mentioned apart from it ending (no sign of his wife, which sort of suggests something happened to her, but that's never explored). Not a bad little movie at all.

Update for 9 November...

Back to the horror movies which would have happened a few days ago before I was rudely interrupted by some Aussie girls. Disgraceful... Anyway, some quick summations - Grace: The Possession is another exorcism drama, this one told mostly in the first person perspective which means the only time we see Grace (Alexia Fast) is when she looks in a mirror, a pain in the arse for us cappers, but there are a few moments of cappable stuff. Otherwise, who cares... I Will Follow You Into The Dark is a movie about a girl (Mischa Barton), who decides to withdraw from relationships after her parents die horribly. But when she meets a man, she slowly lets go and then when she falls for him, he disappears with only blood trails left behind. OK drama that would probably be better if the last act wasn't so ludicrous and better explained. Ghost of Goodnight Lane is about the ghost of the daughter of Charles Manson (hahahaha, seriously) haunting a house that has been turned into a studio and then killing off people inside until they leave forever. Seems to play as a horror comedy, but is fairly loose with the comedy although Billy Zane is in fine form sleazing up the place and a couple of deaths are pretty ridiculous, one with nail especially and a bizarre after credits sequence. But, the Charles Manson stuff isn't the stuff of comedy even though the bloke playing Manson plays pretty broad.

Update for 6 November...

The November Man is a spy thriller set in Serbia where Devereaux (Pierce Brosnan) is a retired agent who has come back to help an old friend who has some important information about a presidential candidate who is cleaning up his past by eliminating it. Just before she dies, Devereaux is given the name of a prostitute who can prove that the candidate committed war crimes in Chechnya. Devereaux goes about finding said target with the help of a social worker Alice (Olga Kurylenko) who was the last known contact for the girl. Meanwhile, the CIA are very much involved with Mason (Luke Bracey) in charge of the situation, who just happens to be the agent Devereaux attempted to discard before he left the CIA. Now the CIA wants Devereaux and Devereaux is desperate to find the prostitute before the candidate's assassins or the CIA do and he will do anything to anyone to get what he wants. Pretty stock-standard stuff with Brosnan still trying to shake off Bond in a role he clearly seems to love playing. He's not bad and the movie is quite brutal at times, but this is pretty typical double and triple cross stuff and also adheres to the two Aussie actors rule with Luke Bracey and Eliza Taylor, who has a nice little, if sadly dark, nude scene. Ah well, it's better than nothing.

Update for 4 November...

A couple more horror movies today.

Jug Face is a horror thriller where Ada (Lauren Ashley Carter), who lives with her family who are in a backwater clan who live very differently to everyone else, becomes pregnant from sex with her brother. She is also forced to marry a man from another family and supposed to be a virgin. Meanwhile, Dewai (Sean Bridgers), a man who is in charge of making 'jug faces', which wards off an evil spirit, senses it's time to make another one. After placing it in a hidden place, Ada comes across it and decides to hide it some place else. This sets off a series of events that begin to tear the backward community apart as the evil spirit begins to attack members of the community. Everything they do, including sacrificing members of the community does not stop this spirit and the blame eventually falls on Dewai, who does his best to protect Ada from being sacrificed herself, but Ada's doing a good job of destroying the community with her lies and deceptions. Baffling and somewhat disturbing movie about a community that is well away from the rest of us. Some of the things that happen are quite shocking and their beliefs are remarkably backward. Definitely an interesting movie, but I had a lot of trouble getting my head around the things that were going on and trying the rationalise them. Some things are just completely irrational and defy explanation and this movie does a good job at proving that. If you're up for something very different, this one's worth a look, but it's not for everyone and this ain't a horror movie as you and I know it. Also not surprised Lucky McKee's has some involvement as it seems to be in his wheelhouse.

Devil's Tower is a British zombie horror movie where Sarah (Roxanne Pallett), who's an 18 year-old girl (no offense to Roxanne, but the oldest 18 year-old I've seen in a while and the movie keeps trying to make you believe she's 18) who has being taken away from her abusive mother (Frances Ruffelle) and moves in to a run down apartment building and into a flat where someone was recently murdered. Strange things begin happening the building and people start dying, but also come back as zombies controlled by an old woman through her TV (ah, yeah). Things get more complicated for Sarah when Sid (Jason Mewes) befriends her after he breaks into her house and the old woman goes about ruining attempting to control them. This culminates in a party at her neighbours house that is going to be one helluva party, if you can survive it. A messy movie with conflicting ideas but when the zombies start piling up, that part of the movie is a bit of fun, but everything else doesn't make a lot of sense. Some bits seem tacked on while other things happen out of nowhere. Meh...

Update for 3 November...

A couple of horror movies today.

Life After Beth is a zombie horror comedy where Zach (Dane DeHaan) is mourning the death of his girlfriend Beth (Aubrey Plaza) except a few days later, he spots Beth at home where her parents Maury and Geenie (John C. Reilly and Molly Shannon) are hiding her. When they finally relent and let Zach in, Beth is very much 'alive', but something is not right. First off, her parents do not want her to go out during the daytime. And she has a sudden liking for smooth jazz. Oh, and she seems to be much stronger, angrier, hornier and more susceptible to getting skin irritations. OK, Beth's a zombie and while at first Zach is happy to have her back, it's starting to become apparent that this is not the Beth as he knew her. Plus the fact that more supposedly dead people are surfacing and starting to eat people. Can Zach and Beth's love survive his minor hiccup? An OK movie that has it's moments, but there's nothing here that hasn't done by other zombie movies and at this stage, there isn't any new or different coming from zombie movies. But there's a few laughs to be had and it's fun until the inevitable happens. Not bad at all.

House of Bodies is a cheapie horror thriller where a group of girls live in a house and work as webcam girls. On her first day, Kelli (Alexz Johnson) is very hesitant to strip on camera and is having trouble getting started. She finally plucks up enough courage to take on her first client, Kyle (Harry Zittel), a deafmute and they strike up a rapport quickly. Meanwhile, Tracy (Elizabeth Brissenden), the person who runs the house, is looking for something more from her clients when a new one promises to 'hurt' her. She invites him in and it turns out he's a sadistic killer and starts picking off the girls one by one. Over the other side of town, a detective (Terrence Howard) is interrogating a notorious serial killer (Peter Fonda) about finding the sadistic killer that is currently stalking the webcam girls. Will it be too late? And what does Queen Latifah have to do with it? Considering the obviously limited resources (most of the money probably went to the 3 name stars), this movie ain't that bad. It reminds me a bit of those Roger Corman cheapies where he'd get some star who'd owe him a few days work and they'd somehow fit in the plot (usually not well) and then there would be the main plot. In fact the Terrence Howard/Peter Fonda to and fro is the least interesting thing in the movie and it works better when it focuses on the webcam girls, particularly the very cute Alexz Johnson. Yeah, it's not a great movie, I wish there's was more nudity, at least show someone's breasts, and it's limitations are obvious, but you could do a lot worse than this.
