Redux for 28 March...

Redux time again featuring Penélope Cruz in her very first movie Jamón, Jamón (either that or Belle Epoque). Absolutely epic over-the-top melodrama from Bigas Luna, never one to be accused of subtlety, the first of his Iberian Trilogy (also featuring the Javier Bardem starring macho melodrama Huevos de Oro - Golden Balls and a movie all about Mathilde May's wonderful breasts, La Teta y la Luna - The Tit and the Moon). Everyone's in cracking form here, especially Javier Bardem as the meat obsessed bull fighter wannabe who is paid to 'persuade' Penélope Cruz to be with him which causes a series of events that end in tragedy. Plus everyone is fucking one another. It's completely ludicrous, but I love every minute of it including its extremely overwrought ending. Haven't seen the other two movies, Huevos de Oro and La Teta y la Luna, since the 90s although I have Huevos on DVD somewhere around here. Hopefully they'll get a Bluray release soon enough.

Redux for 26 March...

Haven't done a redux in a few weeks and I didn't have much else ready, so might as well do one. Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) is one of those movies that I just have to watch every few years. Great story and the start of the peak Penélope Cruz hotness period, which is technically still going nearly 20 years later (that long, shit, time does fly). I don't even mind the Cameron Crowe directed remake Vanilla Sky, also featuring Penélope in the same role, a tad confusing.

Bizarrely, the copy of Abre Los Ojos I have is saturated in noise, which I've never seen on a Bluray ever. I've done what I can and it's an easy fix, but still surprised that things like that still happen or happen at all on a commercial Bluray. Total amateur hour...

Update for 23 March...

Continuing on the with the lesbian dramas.

Anatomy of a Love Seen is a drama where Zoe (Sharon Hinnendael) and Mal (Jill Evyn) are actresses who had a relationship that began while filming a sex scene for a movie, but 6 months later their relationship has ended badly. They are asked by the director of that movie, Kara (Marina Rice Bader), to come back and re-film a tamer version of the sex scene for the TV version of the movie. They both accept, but are extremely reluctant to get 'intimate' with each other again. Throughout the day, both actresses go through the wringer as they overcome their doubts to redo the scene. It also seems that Kara as her own motives for bringing the actresses back together. Hmmm, an interesting idea for a movie, maybe not a full length feature at 80 minutes like this is, but an idea that has its merits. Having said that, the whole purpose for redoing the scene is so phony and highly manipulative that is makes zero sense if you think about it for a second. It was probably not necessary either because it ends up being a ridiculous dynamic that adds nothing to the movie. The whole movie making process gives the movie it's base and while it's all a little 'inside information', it's still intriguing to watching how a sex scene is filmed. But that added dynamic drags the movie down when there's no need for it. Interesting tale, but not wholly successful.

Update for 22 March...

A couple of lesbian movies that played on TV during Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras week that I've finally gotten around to.

Zoe. Misplaced; is a drama about Zoe (Hannah Raven Smith), a student who has a daily regimen of watching bad TV, chain smoking and going to university. Then she meets her roommate/best friend Coal's (Kaska Zielinski) ex turned casual fling Nat (Clementine Mills) and everything is turned on its head. She falls for her instantly, but does not want to hurt Coal, so when Nat comes over when Coal is on a trip, Zoe does everything to resist until she can't resist no more. Zoe decides to wait to tell Coal of this development, but when the right time comes, Coal has her own misfortune of failing a drug test and missing the team. Now things are quickly developing between Zoe and Nat and it comes to a head when Coal finds Zoe and Nat's place and Coal kicks her out of the house. Zoe moves in with uni friend Tom and carries on the relationship with Nat which has quickly moved to them moving in together, but Nat is now becoming increasingly distant and flaky. Things come to a head when Nat claims to have had a car accident and Zoe wants to comfort her but realises that she knows absolutely nothing about her, not even where she works! Zoe wants to know about Nat but isn't willing to give herself to Zoe. Can the relationship survive? Lengthy (pretty much 2 hours) relationship drama that begins like one of those talky 90s relationship dramas, but takes a dramatic turn for the better when the Zoe and Nat relationship evolves into a giant stinking mess where Zoe has put everything into it while Nat is completely blasé about it all. The ending is quite devastating and works well with both leads conveying complex characters quite well. If only this doesn't take almost 80 minutes to happen as Zoe. Misplaced; is an intriguing relationship drama that takes forever to get to the intriguing relationship. Still, not a bad film at all.

Appropriate Behaviour is a comedy drama about Shirin (Desiree Akhavan, who also wrote and directed the movie), an Iranian-American bi-sexual woman living in New York who has just broken up with her first proper girlfriend Maxine (Rebecca Henderson) in a rather ugly manner. She is also afraid of telling her parents about her attraction to women which causes her more grief when her older brother is busy making it known he is about to get married to the joy of their parents. Shirin moves in with her friend Crystal (Halley Feiffer) and takes a job teaching a film class... to young kids. She tries to move on with a fling with a man she picked up while online dating and getting involved in a threesome that ends badly. Meanwhile, we see bits of Shirin and Maxine's relationship from how they met being miserable at a New Years party to Shirin sort of introducing her to her parents through to the bitter end. Fairly amusing tale that has one major problem that took me a while to get used to and that was that the movie follows two separate timelines, following the now and throughout their relationship which I took me a long while to realise this was the case as the movie flowed quickly between both and even the occasional meeting in the present which again threw me off. Otherwise, the movie is fine and Desiree Akhavan has similarities to Aubrey Plaza, which means there are some genuine laughs throughout the movie, a fair amount about them involving her erratic sex life. I just wish the timelines were more obvious.

Sadly, the Zoe. Misplaced; videos are from it's TV showing on SBS2 meaning the quality isn't the greatest with some ghosting during any quick movement. Otherwise, it's fine. When a better version of the movie is realeased, I'll see if I can remember to update it then. I also watched Appropriate Behaviour off the TV as well but was able to find a HD Web Download which meaning better quality, but not without it's issues. Still, could be a lot worse.

Update for 19 March...

A couple of quick updates today, one from the fairly decent Irish horror movie The Canal about a man who thinks the ghosts of his old house are behind the murder of his unfaithful wife and now they're after the rest of the family. Has a surprisingly shocking ending that's hard to shake. Ecstasy from Trainspotting writer Irvine Welsh is a Scottish/Canadian drama, which is a baffling combination, where a drug dealer/smuggler finds love with a Canadian girl (Kristin Kreuk) and decides to change his life for her. Didn't really like this movie, found the lead character to be a real prick and couldn't have cared less that he was turning his life around. Plus a lot of it felt heavy-handed, especially the pill popper falls for anti-drug worker who actually takes drugs, heh heh, that's profound! Some nice nudity from Olivia Andrup, but forget it, go watch Trainspotting instead.

Back on that kick of capping stuff off the TV, this time another Mexican movie Bajo la Sal (Under The Salt), a pretty decent murder mystery thriller about a group of girls who were all expelled from a school that have been murdered and Isabel (Irene Azuela) is the last girl on that list. With a suspended cop desperate to reclaim his reputation and a strange boy who becomes obsessed with Isabel, can she survive before the killer strikes again? Um, if you don't want to know that answer, I'd suggest not looking below. Oh dear...

I was hoping to have another movie to go with this, but I seem to have misplaced or deleted it. Probably the latter knowing me...

Update for 13 March...

Evil Feed is a comedy where Steven (Terry Chen) forcefully takes over his father's Chinese restaurant, which has a specialty in human flesh including the famous Dickie Roll (um, I think you can work out what that is). On one special night six months after the takeover, Steven with his loving partner/host Yuki (Alyson Bath) are getting ready to impress some important people. Steven is introduced by his bookie to someone interested in his business , Madame Dragonfly (Carrie Genzel) and Yuki, who is hornily waiting for Steven, gets jealous and decides to take matters into her own hands. Meanwhile, there's an MMA exhibition in the restaurant where kidnapped participants are forced to fight to the death with against the restaurant's fighters. Jenna (Laci J Mailey) is kidnapped and brought to the restaurant to be a part of the special attraction only to see her father become the first victim and her sister (Kristy Dinsmore) to be a part of a live human anatomy exhibition which is much worse than you imagine. Jenna's friends attempt to infiltrate the restaurant and save her to varying degrees of success. Can Jenna, her sister and her friends escape the restaurant before becoming next on the menu? I got to be honest, I only watched this because Alyson Bath from Girlhouse was in it (and she's having a blast in her role) and went in knowing very little, but it doesn't take long to find out what you're in for. Full of gushes of blood, plentiful dick jokes including way too many involving the sampling of such, hot chicks in not much clothes and shots focused on breasts, bizarrely low rent fight sequences, debatable racial humour (there's a character called Phat Phuk, where that character telld everyone it's pronounced Fat Fuck, come on...) and much more, Evil Feed is a silly movie and proud of it. It is what it is and I didn't hate the movie, but I was rolling my eyes quite a bit at how silly it was getting, so maybe next time I should read up more before watching something I know nothing about.

Update for 11 March...

Halfway finished a whole bunch of movies, so hence the delay for some new stuff on the movie side. A couple of new ones today.

The Anomaly is an alternate universe thriller that begins in London with Ryan (Noel Clarke, also director) who wakes up in the back of a truck with a tied up kid with him. He helps the kid escape, chased by the besuited Harkin (Ian Somerhalder) and a bunch of cops, but something isn't right and Ryan realises that he is the kidnapper. He has a seizure-like episode and wakes up in a boarded up room where he meets Harkin who tells him of a plan involving the boy, but something still isn't right and Ryan and Harkin get into a fight which ends in Harkin tells Ryan that he is in a loop where he reboots every 9 minutes and 47 seconds or if he is incapacitated and that he should wait it out until everything is fixed. After his next seizure-like episode, he wakes up having sex with a prostitute Dana (Alexis Knapp) who seems to be a regular acquaintance. As Ryan attempts to work out who he is, he uses Dana to escape Russian mobsters in the brothel and finds out that this 'reality' is in New York. Then, has another seizure-like episode and wakes up with a group of agents headed by Elkin (Luke Hemsworth) who are waterboarding a criminal scientist Leonid (Niall Greig Fulton) where Ryan helps him escape, but after the next seizure, it turns out Leonid is being used to build a super virus, not that he has a problem with that. So, can Ryan save the kid and world, work out who he is and unravel this insane plot. Interesting movie that has a major problem in that it's way too complicated to keep up with everything. Every reboot is a like a complete restart of plot as Ryan (and the viewer) work out which Ryan is in the 'reality'. I only partially understand it and it really needs another viewing at the very least. Also, there's a ludicrous amount of similar looking fight scenes, almost one every reboot, which gets a bit monotonous after a while. But apart from that, The Anomaly is a silly, but at the very least, an interesting if complicated tale that keeps the interest all the way through.

Love Of My Life is a torture thriller where Julius (Diarmid Heidenreich) is strapped to a gurney and an insidious doctor (Peter O'Brien) details a plan for him that involves Julius being tortured for a number of days although he can stop at any time, but it means that the doctor will kill the woman in the other room, Nicole (Bel Deliá), who just happens to be his lover. Julius resists this and the doctor tortures him. In between each torture, Julius remembers how he and Nicole came lovers, meeting on an unwanted blind date set up by his best friend Reggie (Michael Budd) who wants to get with Nicole's friend Keira (Isaro Kayitesi). Surprisingly, Julius and NIcole hit it off and things are go so well that they eventually get married, as do Reggie and Keira. Meanwhile, as Julius resists the doctor's latest torture tactic, Nicole gets talking to the doctor's helper Samson (Rob Messer) and attempts to use him to escape and help Julius. Not sure what to make of Love Of My Life. It's got an interesting premise involving love surviving even through the very worst things, but something felt off. The torture stuff doesn't work, I'm not a fan of senseless torture anyway because it's boring for the most part, but here it doesn't add anything to the story. Plus the major twist is one that sort of makes the whole premise seem silly and Julius's action seem a little, possibly unwarranted. And it doesn't fit the rest of the movie either, seems to come out of nowhere and kills the momentum that it developing, like the air being let out of a balloon. Love Of My Life had potential, but I think it blows it with one silly, unnecessary twist.

A couple more movies recorded off the TV, both from Mexico, neither are the greatest quality possibly because they look like HD upscales which would make sense see as through both movies are from 2006-2008 period. The Nesio videos have some ghosting at any quick movement, which isn't great. Ah well, they're not terrible, perfectly fine, just could be better.

Update for 4 March...

As usual there's a whole lotta stuff piling up and it's time to finally get around to watching and capping them. Today, a couple of Spanish movies that I recorded off the TV recently. The quality of SBS's HD channel is debatable, yeah it's in 1080i, but it varies quite widely in quality. Usually I just make the videos smaller to make a small difference in quality, but still...

Just some quick appraisals today, Yo, También (Me Too) is a movie about Daniel, a man with Down Syndrome who starts his first 'real world' job and instantly falls for his workmate, troubled 30-something party girl Laura (Lola Dueñas). They strike up a friendship, but he wants more and she is reluctant. I kinda liked this movie, it's quite charming and the bloke playing Daniel is really good and likeable and the movie handles the issues quite well with a fairly satisfying ending without pointless sentimentality. I really don't remember much about 53 Días de Invierno (53 Days of Winter), its some ensemble drama of some sort that seems to come around every six to nine months where I invariably record it and forget about it. And being an ensemble drama, I probably hated it...

I have a few more foreign movies taped off the TV sitting around including a couple from Mexico which I should have ready tomorrow. I desperately need to free up some space on my PVR so I can record all the Australian shows over the week, so it's time to do a dump of all those movies I end up forgetting about.

Update for 2 March...

Watched a few low budget Australian horror movies lately to catch up, a few here today and some others which didn't have anything to cap.

Raven's Cabin (aka Redback) was made in 2009 and finally released last month set in a youth boot camp where wayward teenagers are made better people. From the minute they arrive at Redback, the latest batch of recruits are tormented by a bunch of sadistic military type 'counsellors', led by Harris (John McPherson). They are forced to do morning exercises and go on lengthy runs around the camp and if you misbehave, you are locked up in cages out of sight from the camp. From arrival, Andrea (Andrea Burdett), who's reason for being at the camp is not quite clear, struggles with the demands, but also begins to see ghostly visions of a girl in danger (Laura Fairclough). Meanwhile, a detective from the city is charged to look into the camp for misdeeds and arrives at the camp and is given 5-star treatment. But, something isn't right. As he interviews the counsellors choice of attendees Claire (Elizabeth Frodsham), she confides in the detective off-the-record that the counsellors are evil. Andrea's vision are becoming more intense including predicting the future of her camp mates and more graphic detail of the fate of the ghostly girl. After collapsing from an intense vision, Andrea comes face-to-face with the truth behind the ghostly girl. OK thriller that's a bit clunky, particularly in regard to the visions and anything to do with the ghostly girl, but gets by with a just interesting enough story, but only just.

The Director's Cut is a 2009 slasher comedy where a film crew go to a remote property in Western Australia to make a cheapie horror movie (ha! it's meta). Led by an insufferable director Mike (Jonathan Wood), his trusty producer offsider Bobby (Mollie King) and the cinematographer Jed (David Maguire), things start badly when one of the actors loses his fingers in an accident and is replaced by the gun crazy armourer who seems overly keen to be there. The lead actor Louis (Renato Fabretti) is already trying to get with all the girls including the lead actress ~~Emma~~ Ema (with one M) (Jennieka Chattelle) and the Scottish assistant Fortune (Melanie Munt). They arrive at the property, not before losing another member and then the next morning when they start shooting Mike and Jed find the other Mike died in his sleep, but they decide instead of calling off shooting to just say he's sick and continue on. Then, the killings start by someone wearing a koala suit. One by one the cast and crew are killed, but who is the killer? No really, who is the killer? The movie decides to leave it wide open which is great except the film is a complete mess with issues by the bucketful. There's an actor/actress that plays two roles and who is clearly made out to be the killer, but they are killed along the way. Characters just plain disappear, most notably Louis who one moment is in the last 3, then is promptly never seen again in what is continuity gone mad. Plus wasn't this supposed to be a horror comedy because when the killings start, the movie sure turns deadly serious. A not completely bad movie and definitely watchable, but a complete mess nonetheless.

The Gates of Hell is a 2008 horror movie where, you're not going to believe this, a film crew go to a remote property that used to be an orphanage to make a cheapie horror movie. Led by the director Kyle (Michael Piccirilli), his assistant Leah (Samantha Noble, sadly only acted in an episode of Fringe, starring her father, since) and cameraman (Bradley Tomlinson) and starring lovers Dylan (Christian Clark) and Maddy (Amy Beckwith), the begin filming after illegally entering the property and break into the old house, which apart from the cobwebs, looks great. Inside, they find an audio tape where someone dictates their last words before committing suicide including saying that he is ashamed of giving up his child. That night as they camp outside, the killings start and as the cast and crew are killed off one by one, the horrifying truth about the place becomes very clear. Hmm, clocking in at 69 minutes plus a ridiculously long 9 minute triple spaced end credits (double space would've cut 3 minutes at least), The Gates of Hell feels too long even at that length. All bar one of the cast is dead by 40 minutes and all in less than 15 minutes, then there's an overwrought explanation to why this is happening that still doesn't explain much. There's also another character who turns up for no other reason than to perform a prank and be slaughtered and that seems out of step with the rest of the movie amazingly. Hard to believe that a 69 minute horror movie could be mostly boring, but this one does it so well. Also, apparently Emma Lung is listed to be in this movie, but she's not in it at all, not even credited in the 24 hour credit sequence with most of humanity.

The Gates of Hell has never been released here in Australia with most Australian horror movies usually dealt a bad hand here (see also Raven's Cabin above). I got this DVD from France (you'll see some French subtitles in the clip below) and it isn't the best quality. It joins other never to released in Australia horror movies like Voodoo Lagoon and the never ever been released anywhere Enemies Closer, Devil's Gateway and 10 Days To Live (starring Clare Bowen), all movies starring fairly known actors too.

At least Monster Pictures is turning that around finally releasing a whole bunch of low budget Australian horror movies like Raven's Cabin and other movies I recently watched but with nothing to cap, the rather boring and done to death ghost summoning haunted house supernatural thriller Beckoning The Butcher, the surprisingly decent creature horror thriller Throwback where a mythical yowie creature stalks some unfortunates including Vernon Wells in a decent cameo and the not bad end of days cult thriller Apocalyptic. I also watched the never released in Australia 2008 action comedy Nailed with many of the same makers of The Gates of Hell and also a brief appearance from Samantha Noble, that is cheap as anything, but quite effective, far better than The Gates of Hell.
