Update for 31 December...

All of the Spanish update has been in HD so far, so it's time to go back to super quality of DVDs with a couple of movies on DVD. Again, couldn't watch both movies as no English subtitles, which is a shame as I wouldn't have mind watch La Estrella with Ingrid Rubio, whom I have liked since one of her early movies Taxi, which I capped off the TV back in the day. Haven't seen her in something new for a while and the nudity is a nice bonus.

Well, that's it for 2013. I probably won't post a new movie series tomorrow (but I will finish off the Skins update). December is usually the month that I slow down and don't do a lot, but this year it has been surprisingly prolific, possibly the busiest month this year. And it's good to put a giant dent in the backlog of Spanish movies I've been meaning to cap. And two Spanish updates for the year, now I'm just spoiling you. Also, added numerous more old Australian Classics, but the year was very slight on new Australian releases. And no real stand outs either, very reminiscent of the poor year of 2003. And not many of those movies have nudity either... Also a number of movies and TV shows have been held over for 2014, so maybe we might hit the jackpot. I'll remove my usual cynical side and say 'Fingers crossed'.

The site is even more sprawling and epic than ever and I've decided to make some slight changes to help make the site more accessible, but I've got to get off my lazy arse to do so. I'm hoping to make the site better for the growing number of people viewing the site on phones and tablets, which should start soon. I'm also going to start linking tags to something, which will hopefully make it easier to find your favourite actress on the site, as I've given up trying to fix the search function. Also, I've just put up a Disqus comments page on the old comments page, something that actually works, so if you want to contact me or just say thanks, follow the following link:

OK, it's time for my favourite series for the year, taken from stuff that I capped this year that was released from late 2012 'til now.

The list for 2013 is:
1. Gracie Gilbert in Underbelly Squizzy (opined last year hoping for big things and delivered big time)
2. Adriana Ugarte in Combustión (surprisingly sexy scene. Surprisingly popular on this site too)
3. Jemma Dallender in I Spit On Your Grave 2 (oh, come on, don't deny it, you loved the nude torture...)
4. Katherine Hicks, Anya Beyersdorf, Valerie Bader, Roxane Wilson, Michelle Vergara Moore, Dina Panozzo, Saskia Burmeister and Maia Thomas in Black & White & Sex (more than expected with special kudos to Maia for doing the bulk of the nudity, but some good stuff from Katherine Hicks as well)
5. Tuppence Middleton in Trap For Cinderella (perennial fave, 2nd last year, but better nudity this year)
6. Ashley Hinshaw in About Cherry (first noticed her in Rites of Passage and Chronicle and does some really good nudity in this movie)
7. Tamsin Egerton and Anna Friel in The Look of Love (Tamsin is another fave and has some good nudity and Anna is always nude!)
8. Elena Satine in Magic City (done a bit of nudity is series, but that sex scene in series 2 was most excellent)
9. Louisa Krause in King Kelly (movie is full-on ride and there's some great nudity from Louisa)
10. Amanda Seyfried in Lovelace (some great nudity finally!)
Notable mentions:
Pell James in Pawn Shop Chronicles (surprisingly nude for her entire screen time), Jane Harber in Offspring (have to get that scene in HD to see if there's something there. This scene came out of nowhere), Leeanna Walsman in Wentworth (long time fave with some interesting stuff in one ep), Elisabeth Moss in Top of the Lake (just good to see her get naked), Lily Sullivan in Mental (fast heading into my list of faves. Also loved her in Camp), Jenna Lind, Anna Hutchison, Gwendoline Taylor etc. in Spartacus: War of the Damned (Spartacus always delivers the good, but the Underbelly girls nude again is a nice bonus. And newcomer Gwendoline was a great addition).
Special mentions: Rose McIver in Blinder (OK, her nudity is brief in Blinder, but her nude scenes in Masters of Sex were a great surprise. I may cap that show once it hits Bluray, although I watched a few episodes of SBS and wasn't a fan of the show). Also, these series are coming soon to the site as I'm waiting on better copies becoming available but Emma Lung in Crave and Emily Browning in Plush/Summer in February are also worth a mention.

Here's hoping 2014 is an even better year than 2013. Aw, come on, Margot Robbie's already gotten it off to an amazing start (still grumbling that Wolf of Wall Street is still 3+ weeks away from being released here). So, here's hoping for more capworthy stuff from Aussie actresses, hell, I don't want to do anything else in 2014...

Update for 29 December...

No Lo Llames Amor... Llámalo X is a comedy about a once well-known porn director Pepe Fons (Mariano Peña), best known for his porn parodies of Hollywood movies, who after being ridiculed on a TV show decides to make one last great porn movie. Against the advice of his long suffering wife María (Adriana Ozores), he gets his old cast and crew together including his former stars Fermín and Saray (Paco León and Kira Miró) who married and now own and run a deli and Rafa (Javier Mora), who's still entertaining the ladies. He also get his old producer Joserra (Javier Gutiérrez) who hires Lino (Julián López) to write a tale set in the Spanish Civil War. Pepe also hires Lourdes (Ana Polvorosa), a young woman who's never done porn before and who Lino falls for instantly. It soon becomes clear that Pepe has been out of the game for longer than he thought and struggles with the demands of the shoot and numerous other distractions. An OK little movie that is reminiscent to another recent Spanish porn parody Los Años Desnudos, but is utterly predictable, right down to the fate of Pepe. It's a fun watch, but don't expect anything groundbreaking.

Update for 28 December...

Didn't realise I had so many Spanish movies piling up, might have enough to run out the year!

Lo Contrario al Amor is a romantic comedy where Merce (Adriana Ugarte), a massage therapist (not what your thinking...), is told by a clairvoyant that she will meet a man and fall in love. But, Merce does not want this as she thinks that love turns her into a terrible person. After getting stuck in an elevator with her celebrity sister Loreto (Guadalupe Lancho), she is rescued by three firemen, all of whom take a shine to Merce and all end up going on a date with her. She likes Raúl (Hugo Silva) the most and begins a relationship with him, but all of her old traits start to come back and the relationship begins to have difficulties. Meanwhile, her sister Loreto makes a comeback hosting a late-night quiz show. Coupled with a growing love for cocaine, this is not going to go well. Also, the two firemen that missed out on Merce's affections discover something about themselves. While, Lo Contrario al Amor is a fairly stock standard romantic comedy, there's a lot of focus on how a relationship between two opposites would work. Yeah, it ends as they all do, but the movie at least challenges the conventions. But, the most bizarre thing about this movie is the two firemen that lost out in the chase for Merce turn out to have affections for one another, seemingly without having gay feelings before. I don't know what's going there, seems a bit far fetched to me.

And I've got to say, Adriana Ugarte is fast becoming one of my faves, really love seeing her in movies and her scene from Combustion will be high up on my end of year list.

Update for 27 December...

The Spanish updates keep piling up. Today's movie is Alacrán Enamorado, a movie about a young man who has just been released from prison and attempts to move on from the neo-nazi group he was a part of by becoming a professional boxer. Or something like that, again, I haven't been able to watch it with no subtitles, but it involves the Bardem brothers with Carlos playing a gym owner and also the writer of the movie and Javier turning up as the leader of a neo-nazi organisation, which I'm sure would be a barrel of laughs if I could understand it.

There's some pretty good nudity in the movie from Judith Diakhate that would've been better if the full frontal scenes weren't so dark, but the sex scenes are a bit more enthusiastic than usual, a nice little bonus.

Update for 26 December...

A couple of quick series for the Spanish update today.

Impávido is a Guy Ritchie-like thriller (really, has it come to this to describe a movie?) where Ray (Julián Villagrán) takes the rap when he and his girlfriend Dani (Carolina Bona) steal a car that just happens to have a baby in it. Two years later, he is released goes to work for his prison mate Manrique (Pepo Oliva) where he goes to various European countries and steals luxury cars for rebirthing. One night, he joins a poker game run by Tena (Manolo Solo) and wins big, much to the chagrin of the pub owner. In haste, he tries to escape in stealing Tena's car, but instead of hurting him, he is impressed by the speed of his breaking in. Tena introduces Ray to his boss, the psychopathic Mikima (porn star Nacho Vidal), who gets him to do a drug deal during one of his car stealing gigs while sticking Tena with his idiot savant nephew Aaron (Selu Nieto) to babysit. But, things go wrong, Ray survives the drug deal gone wrong, but loses the money in a drunken spree then loses the car he was given. At the same time, a heist organised by Mikima goes horribly wrong when they are double-crossed. Mikima loses his shit and goes on a rampage finding who double-crossed him. Ray sneaks back into town with the help of Manrique, who may know a lot more than he's leading on. An OK movie that's more enjoyable if you like that sort of movie, but it's nothing you haven't seen all before. And there's plenty of guys getting their heads blow off, which is never a bad thing...

Hijo de Caín (Son of Cain) is a thriller about Nico (David Solans), a teenage boy who is deemed troubled by his parents, millionaire businessman Carlos (Jose Coronado) and mother Coral (Maria Molins). After a dog is found dead in Nico's bed after being dragged through the house, apparently he was saving it, Nico is on his last chance before being sent to reform school. His mother does not want this and gets in touch with old flame Julio (Julio Manrique), a psychiatrist who is doing great work with children, who agrees to see Nico. Nico loves the game of chess and Julio is a reformed chess expert and when he beats Nico, Nico is extremely perturbed. Julio decides to help, mainly because he needs a paying client and uses chess to get to know Nico, including introducing him to his chess mentor Andrew (Jack Taylor) who immediately advises him to stay away from Nico and to keep him away from his star pupil Laura. After a car crash caused by a fight between Nico and his father, Julio convinces Carlos that he is close to finding the problem, which he thinks is his violent father and then he finds information that points to something more sinister. Or has Julio got it all wrong... Good little thriller that keeps the audience on its toes and has a very shocking ending. There's a lot of emphasis on chess, including an interesting theory about there's no more strategy in chess thanks to computer chess. Reminds me a bit of the 90s movie Silent Fall (with Richard Dreyfuss and Liv Tyler), but without the autistic child angle and that Hijo de Caín is much better than that movie. Also get the feeling this is going to get remade by Hollywood, definitely seems ripe for that to happen.

Update for 24 December...

Still going with the Spanish stuff. Today's movie is Fuga de Cerebros 2, a college gross-out comedy where the group of lads (well, the ones that hadn't gone onto bigger things) get into Harvard (have they lowered their standards?) and they play up, fall in love... you know the drill. Didn't really watch it as I don't have subtitles, but it one of those foreign movies set in America where Americans don't speak English (OK, there's a little English, but I always find this amusing). I have the watched the original movie and I would cap it if I could get my hands on a HD copy of it just because of Amaia Salamanca, who has a great nude scene in that movie. That movie was pretty poor, this one doesn't really look any better with one character shitting in everything of the football captain's. And a baffling David Hasselhoff cameo to top it off (speaking and singing in Spanish!). Pretty girls though, especially Patricia Montero, why haven't I seen her before and here's hoping to seeing more from her.

Update for 22 December...

Didn't get around to the promised redux, but have some new Spanish stuff instead.

El Artista y La Modelo (The Artist and the Model) is a drama about an aging French artist Marc Cros (Jean Rochefort) who is inspired to make one last masterpiece when his wife Léa (Claudia Cardinale, good to see her still in movies) spies a displaced Spanish refugee Mercè (Aida Folch) living on the streets and takes her home to help her out. Mercè agrees to nude model for the sculptor, who becomes inspired like he hasn't for a long time. Not a lot to the movie, a bit like a compact La Belle Noiseuse (with a young Emmanuelle Béart, yummy), mostly about the artistic process and the relationship between the model and artist. There's a little bit of political intrigue, but not enough to make a big deal about. El Artista y La Modelo is an OK movie that is best suited for those interested in the artistic process, everyone else will probably find it boring.

Update for 20 December...

Today's Spanish update features a long time fave of the site, Penélope Cruz.

Twice Born is a Italian drama (but mostly in English) where an Italian woman Gemma (Penélope Cruz) is invited back to Sarajevo by Gojco (Adnan Haskovic) for the first time since the Bosnian conflict. She travels with her son Pietro and travels to all the areas she remembers from her time there. Gemma first went to Sarajevo in 1984 just before the Winter Olympics to complete her thesis on writer Ivo Andrić where she first meets Gojco who is assigned to be her guide around the city. He introduces her to his friends which include American photographer Diego (Emile Hirsch) and Diego falls for Gemma instantly and eventually persuades her to get together. Gemma's visa expires and she heads back to Italy without Diego marries someone else, but years later after her divorce, Diego arrives in Rome, ready to pick up their relationship. Gemma is reluctant, but she succumbs to Diego. She becomes pregnant, but has a miscarriage and finds out that she can never have children and after being denied the chance to adopt, they head back to Sarajevo where they meet Aska (Saadet Aksoy) who is willing to be a surrogate. But, this is the time of the Bosnian war and things do not go to plan and Aska goes missing just as she is about to go ahead with the surrogacy. With all hope lost, Diego, who has been withdrawn since her disappearance finds Aska, heavily pregnant and more than willing to give Gemma the child. But, by now, Gemma and Diego's love has waned and when they are evacuated out of Sarajevo, Diego stays behind and she never sees him again. In the present, there is Adnan has a surprise for Gemma. Very good epic love story that can only seems to be done in Europe mainly because even though you know it ended happily, it's mostly tragic. Cruz is excellent, aging 30 years over the length of the movie and having to carry the bulk of the emotional work. The final 'surprise' is quite devastating, particularly as it changes their history. Well worth a look.

Kept thinking while watching the movie that this has a familiar style to another Italian movie starring Penélope Cruz from a few years back called Non ti Muovere (Don't Move), a lo and behold, it's directed by the same bloke. I have a copy of Don't Move somewhere around here, if I can find it, I'll do a redux for tomorrow.

Update for 19 December...

A couple of genre movies for the Spanish update today.

Afterparty is a horror thriller about a young hotshot horror movie director El Capi (Lucho Fernández) who has just broken up with his girlfriend, so he accepts an invitation to go to a house party. He has a good time, sleeping with Carla (Alicia Sanz), but as he goes to leave the house, it is in lockdown and he can't leave. He finds Lucia (Rocío León) and Alex (Ana Caldas) also in the house and along with Carla, decide to enjoy the lockdown. Later, El capi's friend Nacho (Juan Blanco) is found in the house when he receives a video message which shows the brutal murder of another friend Ana (Andrea Dueso) in the house. When they find the room where it happened, the body has disappeared. Then, someone starts stalking those remaining in the house and they start dropping like flies. How are they going to get out of the house and who is the killer and why does he wants them dead? Hmm, mercifully short (75 mins) movie that is the old closed house murder mystery, but there's always that lingering thought that something is amiss and that someone's playing tricks. The murders are far too convenient and happen to quickly and, of course, no bodies which raises doubts as to the validity of the murders. Afterparty is OK as a quick little slasher thriller, it's just a little too obvious to be anything more.

Tres60 (Three-60) is a thriller where college student Guillermo (Raúl Mérida), who's more interested in surfing and makes a bit of money on the side modeling, uncovers some long lost photos that feature him and an old buddy from 10 years ago. His buddy disappeared in mysterious circumstance not long after those photos are taken and he decides to find out what happened to him. With the help of his equally cocksure little brother and the cousin of his roommate Daniela (Sara Sálamo, more from her please...), who he is dating, Guillermo uncovers a nefarious plot involving a world class organ transplant doctor (Joaquim de Almeida) and many notable people who seem to be running an underground organ transplant network for rich people that may involve the kidnapping and murder of children. Tres60 starts off with a wild idea and then just get more and more preposterous by the minute. Guillermo spends most of the movie breaking and entering so many places and never once gets noticed. And that ending couldn't be telegraphed more if it tried and even that is so ridiculous (the title goes along way to giving the ending away once you know the plot). Geraldine Chaplin's cameo is so over-the-top, it actually perfectly fits the movie. I don't think I've watched a movie that I've shaken my head in disbelief more at. Totally unbelievable and ridiculous.

Update for 18 December...

Well, I've got a few Spanish movies piling up, so it's time for a Spanish update.

Tesis Sobre un Homicidio (Thesis on a Homicide) is an Argentinean thriller where a criminal law professor Roberto Bermúdez (Ricardo Darín) is teaching his yearly, fast paced, 8 week course. Joining the selected few in the class is the son of an old friend Ruiz (Alberto Ammann). As the course begins, a serial killer begins his spree, with the second murder victim found outside of the classroom during a break in class. Roberto hasn't been actively involved in a case for a while and becomes intrigued in the case when he meets the sister of the classroom victim Laura (Calu Rivero) and forms a connection with her. As he uncovers some clues, he begins to suspect that Ruiz may be the killer and when Ruiz starts dating Laura, Roberto becomes convinced that she will be the next victim and becomes desperate to stop Ruiz. Pretty stock standard procedural that never really breaks out from cliche. The whole master and apprentice idea has been done to death and even with Ricardo Darin who always good, this movie never really fires.

Los Últimos Días (The Last Days) is an apocalyptic thriller set in the days after a mysterious virus has gradually enveloped the population, making people become fearful of the outside world to the point that being outside causes such an irrational fear leading to heart failure. Inside a building where he works, Marc (Quim Gutiérrez) volunteers to go through a tunnel that leads to the underground as he is desperate to reunite with his pregnant partner Julia (Marta Etura). With the help of a GPS and an unlikely ally in corporate head hunter Enrique (Jose Coronado), they navigate the growing anarchy and the tension that had already existed between the two. From the Pastor brothers, directors of the similarly themed Carriers, Los Últimos Días is a movie that has an excellent premise that is well presented, but inevitably gets bogged down in the usual apocalyptic cliches that have become the norm for all of those movies. Which is a shame because there's some great stuff here and has a hopeful ending that is pretty well done.

Australian Classics for 15 December...

Still working on some new stuff, so here's a quickie from the vault.

Razorback is a 1984 creature feature where Carl Winters (Gregory Harrison) goes looking for his American documentary maker wife Beth (Judy Morris) who has gone missing, but we know she's been ravaged by a mutated razorback pig, not long after the same razorback save her from being ravaged by a couple of hillbilly kangaroo hunting brothers (David Argue and Chris Haywood). Carl blindly enlists the brother's help in finding her, but they leave him for dead in the middle of the desert. Eventually, he comes across a house owned by Jake (Bill Kerr), a razorback hunter haunted by the killer razorback who took his two year old granddaughter. With a scientist Sarah (Arkie Whiteley) who is staying at the house, they come face to face with the killer razorback, who's not finished yet. An OK monster movie that is very much style over substance thanks to prominent music director Russell Mulcahy, well known for making visually outlandish music videos (Total Eclipse of the Heart and Video Killed the Radio Star come to mind). The Australian desert has never looked more colourful or desolate. The biggest problem is the razorback kills which aren't that great, you barely see anything and they are over very quickly. There is one good moment when a house is ripped in two, but you don't see the razorback in that scene. It's a shame because the plot ain't half bad.

Australian Classics for 14 December...

Australian Classics finishes off the Hexagon Collection today.

High Rolling (also known as High Rolling in a Hot Corvette, which is pretty good description of the plot) is a 1977 caper comedy about two bounders, an cocksure American cowboy Texas (American actor Joseph Bottoms) and a bare knuckle fighter Albee (Grigor Taylor) who move on for more adventures after Tex is sacked for having sex on the job. They hitch a ride with a rough character (John Clayton) is his green Corvette, but after the rough character comes onto Albee, Albee knocks him out and he and Tex steal his wad of cash and his car which also has a large stash of dope and a gun. So off they drive to the Gold Coast, picking up a teenage hitchhiker Lynn (Judy Davis, on debut), but once they get to the Gold Coast, they are picked for a couple of rubes and cannot pick up any girls. They get some new 'threads' and head to a strip club where they hit on a strip act duo (Wendy Hughes and Sandra McGregor), but Tex is unsuccessful and gets beaten up by a bouncer (Gus Mercurio). While the beaten Tex goes off to lick his wounds, Albee goes off with the girls for a night to remember. All the while, the rough character is tracking them down wanting his stuff back. Interesting relic that is fun and has an occasional good scene (the bus robbery is pretty funny, the strip performance is surprisingly sexy particularly with Wendy Hughes cast majorly against type), but has also seriously dated and barely gets going before ending, suggesting a serious of adventures were planned. Judy Davis was a real cutie back in the day, still in NIDA during filming, but I doubt she ever made a movie like this again. I can't think of one.

Australian Classics for 13 December...

Back to the 70s again for this week's Australian Classic.

Eliza Fraser is a 1976 bawdy period farce set in the early years of Australia where the incompetent captain of the brigantine ship, Captain Fraser (Noel Ferrier) sails his ship to Moreton Bay prison where his 2nd in command Captain Rory McBride (English actor John Castle) disembarks wanting to captain his own ship. McBride is also carrying on an affair with Captain Fraser's wife Eliza (English actress Susannah York). At Moreton Bay prison, now under the command of the sadistic Captain Foster Fyans (the legendary Trevor Howard), always enlists a snitch and a bedboy at every prison he run and the job of bedboy goes to David Bracefell (John Waters), who decides to run off naked instead of sharing the bed with Fyans. He ends up the bed of Eliza, who at first mistakes him for McBride, but instead of turning him, she takes pity on him and helps him escape. The next day, the Frasers leave Moreton Bay and wouldn't you know it, get shipwrecked in the same spot the Captain did 4 years previous. A group of Aborigines take in the Frasers and for a while, they live like Aborigines until an Aboriginal elder decides to marry Eliza and she and the Captain escape, with the help of Bracefell who turns up in the nick of time. Eliza takes a shine to Bracefell and want to escape to New Zealand with him, away from her husband, but there one more thing they hadn't counted on. The return of McBride. From the people behind Alvin Purple and Petersen, Eliza Fraser is a fun romp, although not really a funny romp, that would have been one of the first movie to have an extensive look into the lives of Aborigines. Eliza Fraser was a real life person who was notorious for spinning tall tales and this is definitely one tall tale. And there's a requisite nude cameo from Abigail, an oft-used selling point for movies in the 70s.

Update for 11 December...

While I'm on the New Zealand theme, how 'bout two actresses from New Zealand in an Australian movie.

Blinder is a drama set in the world of a local Aussie Rules football club. Tom (Oliver Ackland) is currently a kicking coach for an American college football team in Boston when he gets the call that his old coach (Jack Thompson, sadly not playing the same character from The Club) has died on the eve of the grand final in which his old team, the Torquay Tigers, are playing off in the grand final. Tom returns to Torquay and remembers the reason why he left Torquay, a scandal involving himself and his teammates being involved with an underage girl. After being dropped from the 2002 grand final for having a poor attitude, thereby missing a chance to impress scouts for the AFL, Tom goes about improving himself for the next season. He also starts seeing Rose (Anna Hutchison), whose 15 year-old sister Sammy (Rose McIver) is a water girl for the Tigers. Things seems to be going great for Tom, but Sammy is getting a little too close to his teammates, especially his best mate, star forward Morts (Josh Helman). 10 years on and the events of that fateful night after winning the 2003 premiership still hang over those involved. An OK movie that probably plays better as a TV drama than a feature, but is pretty watchable nonetheless. Blinder is a rare foray into Aussie Rules football (off the top of my head there's The Great Macarthy, The Club and Australian Rules) and I've gotta admit, some of the aspects on show are pretty laughable (like players thinking they will get drafted to the big league from a local football side) and there's absolutely no dramatic tension in the football games even with 3(!) games decided after the siren. Apart from that, the movie is more about Tom coming back to town to face his demons and except for the cop out that Tom was drugged during the incident, Blinder is not bad. And Angus Sampson as the show-off full forward is pretty funny.

Update for 10 December...

You know what I haven't done in a while (well, pretty much everything). Capped a movie from New Zealand. How 'bout two?

Fresh Meat is a home invasion/horror comedy hybrid movie where honour student Rina (Hanna Tevita) returns home from boarding school and on the surface, everything feels the same, well except her mother Margaret (Nicola Kawana) is a celebrity cook. Meanwhile, a daring escape plan from a prison van occurs where a gang of crooks lead by Gigi (Kate Elliott) break out one of their crew. On the run, they decide to drive into the open garage where Rina and her father Hemi (Temuera Morrison) are and hold the family hostage. Big mistake. At first, the gang seems to have control, but it comes increasingly clear that the family is not your ordinary suburban family. So much so, that Rina doesn't even know about the family's newly acquired taste for human flesh. This is going to be a long night for everyone. Fresh Meat is a lot of fun, with plenty of laughs especially from Temuera Morrison as a very ravenous cannibal with some, well, bizarre theories on life. If you're into horror comedies, this is definitely well worth a look.

Two Little Boys is about two lifelong friends Nige (Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie) and Deano (Australian comedian/radio host Hamish Blake). One night after an argument with Deano, Nige is doing some thinking, driving around town at 3am, when he hits a Scandinavian backpacker, killing him. Nige panics and hides the body in some roadworks and goes to the one person who can help him, Deano, who begrudgingly helps by dumping him in the river. But, that doesn't work either. Deano picks up the body and decides to dump it during a trip to the Catlins, their favourite holiday spot. Nige is not holding up well and starts seeing the backpacker everywhere he goes. There's one more hitch. Nige's new flatmate Gav (Maaka Pohatu), who has become Nige's new friend, has gotten wind of them going to the Catlins and wants to come along. Deano has one last plan to get his best buddy back and it involves taking Gav on a 'last day' he'll never forget. An OK comedy that can probably be best described as a 'bogan black comedy', so it's probably not to the taste of everyone, but if you're a fan of either lead actor, you'll probably like it.

Australian Classics for 6 December...

Today, on the 12th anniversary of Johnny Moronic Capturing, I head back to the archives again for an Australian Classics double bill.

Inn of the Damned is a 1975 thriller set in the old West (bafflingly Gippsland in Victoria) where a rundown inn in the middle of nowhere is the site for a string of murders. Caroline (Dame Judith Anderson from Rebecca) and her ever loyal husband Lazar (Joseph Fürst) run the inn where they kill anybody who stays in their establishment which has something to do with their young children dying or something. One day, a trooper (Tony Bonner) stays there and is crushed in the bed by a platform weighed down by heavy rocks that the operated by Lazar. But, this couldn't of happened at a worse time as the place gets busy for the first time ever. First, a couple of noble women with their horseman get caught in a rainstorm and stop off to get out of the rain, then a maverick sheriff (Alex Cord), who has just killed a child killer who was harboured by the inn couple in self-defence, goes looking for the trooper and finds that the inn has much more than meets the eye. Overlong (pushing two hours) movie that has pretensions to greatness including being heavily inspired by Hitchcock (Psycho particularly), but comes up short mainly thanks to too much going on. That's not to say that there aren't good things in the movie, it is well cast, particularly the inn couple who are very unnerving. The murders are quite nasty and well done and the movie is technically proficient, but it's the story that lets the movie down. It feels like two movies rolled into one, hence the quite long running time.

Night of Fear is a 50 minute stalker thriller feature made in 1972 from the same team as Inn of the Damned where a young woman (Carla Hoogeveen, also in Inn of the Damned) goes off to have some tennis and a liaison with a married man. She is also a reckless driver and on her way back to Sydney, she narrowly avoids hitting a truck, only to run off the road and into a dead end (which she does not know). She follows it until she drives into a hidden ditch. This awakens a hillbilly type (Norman Yemm) who just happens to be a man who likes to do bad things to women, usually involving rats. The young woman is now lost in the middle of nowhere with a drooling maniac after her. Here's hoping she gets out alive... Feeling more like an experimental movie with a multitude of editing and sound production, Night of Fear feels extremely dated but highly ambitious and again technically proficient. The acting though is overly dramatic and seriously off-putting and while it may have worked back in the 70s, feels way too much now. But, like Inn of the Damned, Night of Fear isn't without it's charms, but again, it's close but no cigar.

The director of both movies, Terry Bourke, would later go on to direct that magnificent sleazefest Lady, Stay Dead, which definitely suffers from the same problems as the movies in this update. Hmm, time to find his other movies, none of which seem to be on DVD. And I highly recommend that Carla Hoogeveen and Diana Dangerfield from Inn of the Damn, which has a weird vibe involving a stepmother lusting after the stepdaughter. How the hell did that get through 70s censorship...?

Update for 2 December...

Lovelace is a biopic about notorious porn star Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried), who became famous for her starring role in the most well-known porn movie, Deep Throat. Beginning with Linda as a shy 21 year-old who is spotted dancing at a roller skating rink by Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard), a man who apparently runs a restaurant, but it becomes clear that he is really a low level shyster. As Chuck introduces Linda to a whole new world of sexual inhibition, he attempts to get her into the porn industry. Although a terrible actress and not quite measuring up to the standards in regards to her figure, it seems Linda has one special skill that is noticed by film-makers Butchie Peraino (Bobby Cannavale) and Gerry Damiano (Hank Azaria). So, Linda becomes a star after the release of Deep Throat. But, there is an underlying dark side in the relationship between Linda and Chuck that is never seen in the bright lights of showbiz. Lovelace is a distinctly underwhelming retelling of the life of Linda Lovelace that only seems to scratch the surface of what Linda went through. In fact, the movie is split into two halves where the apparent myth is shown first, followed by a retelling of key moments as they apparently happened. Even this seems only cursory and I get the feeling Chuck Traynor was much worse than he is portrayed in this movie. And if this is really Linda's life, it's actually pretty uninteresting, she seems to have had one moment in the sun, which is only highlighted here, then moved on after leaving Chuck, hardly compelling enough for a 90 minute movie that feels like it's padding as is. I keep hearing that Linda Lovelace's story was a horrible one and I'm sure it was, but Lovelace is a lousy way to show it. Wasn't there another going to be another Lovelace biopic starring Lindsay Lohan attempted to be made at the same time? Wonder how that would've went...

At least we get some good nudity from Amanda Seyfried. I quite like her even in those forgettable genre movies that she makes. In Lovelace, she's pretty well cast and does alright with not a lot to work with. It's not her fault the movie isn't interesting enough.
