Redux for 29 October...

First capped this movie in the pre-johnnymoronic.com era of March 2003, over 12 years ago but I've never made the old stuff available. Could've sworn this movie was from 2001, but the end credits says 1997, don't know why I thought that. Barely remember the movie, so this recent rewatch was like watching it anew and Croupier is a very cynical movie, told from the perspective of a jaded writer Jack (Clive Owen, who is very good here in probably his breakout role) who's been tasked to write a novel about soccer, but can't be bothered writing that, so to make money, he takes a job as a croupier that his father had lined up for him, something he had done before but didn't really want to get back into and something his store detective girlfriend (Gina McKee) doesn't want him doing because she wants to date a writer. But once he starts, he begins to enjoy it in his own way, meeting people and conjuring a story in his head and making himself the lead character Jake. One day he meets a South African woman Jani (Alex Kingston) while dealing, who he kind of likes and inevitably asks to go on a weekend trip to his publisher's house during a lull in his relationship. She arrives with a black eye and a busted wrist and then later that night tells him that she's in trouble and is involved with a syndicate looking to rob the casino and he could earn an easy $10,000 just causing a simple distraction, which he reluctantly accepts. But things don't quite go to plan or do they... You never quite know whether it's real or Jack is making it up for a novel he's conjuring instead of the one he's supposed to write and this works well throughout. Clive Owen is perfectly suave as the straight man addicted to watching people lose. The movie gets quite dark at times and the structure is unusual and I loved it again, can't believe I didn't remember much about it.

Update for 27 October...

A couple of Canadian horror movies today. Went looking for more stuff with Sarah Lind who featured in last week's update from the Molly Hartley sequel and came across this werewolf horror comedy WolfCop, a corny movie, but not without some laughs and Sarah Lind's cleavage in is prominence throughout her role and then she has a sex scene with the wolf cop and a body double turns up (and is also credited) which further goes to my theory that she used a body double in the Molly Hartley sequel. Ah well... Die is a horror movie not far removed from Saw with a group of at-risk people imprisoned by a man who lives by the die (nice double pun on the title) and sets about a series of life and death experiments that make one of the imprisoned decide the fate of another. Not a bad little movie.

Update for 22 October...

Knock Knock is a thriller where Evan (Keanu Reeves) is spending the Father's Day weekend alone as his wife and kids leave him so that he can get some work done. Things are fine until he gets a knock at the door and finds to soaking wet girls Bel (Ana de Armas) and Genesis (Lorenza Izzo) who are lost on the way to a party. He lets them in to dry off and gets them an Uber cab, but this will take 45 minutes. Everything seems fine until the girls are about to leave and instead of putting their dry clothes back on, they are completely naked and want Evan badly. To which he reluctantly obliges... The next morning, the two girls are still hanging around, helping themselves to breakfast and despite stern commands to leave, the girls do not. Then, they drop the bombshell that they are both underage and will destroy him if he doesn't let them stay. Evan is in disbelief, but he manages to get the girls to leave and drops them off at there home. Problem solved except the girls come back later that night and now they are going to have some real fun with Evan. Now, Evan's not just fighting for his dignity, he's fighting for his life against two girls who want to make him pay for his mistake. A remake of the 70s movie Death Game, Knock Knock is an OK darkly comedic thriller from Eli Roth, now fully entrenched in Chile. There are moments which work better than others and I'm not fully convinced of the intentions of the two girls who always seem to be 5 steps ahead of everything that was thrown in front of them, particularly the scene with the art dealer which actually feels off-kilter with the rest of the movie. Eli Roth movies always leave me feeling like something is missing, that he's always holding back something even when showing extreme violence. Knock Knock is no exception to that rule.

Update for 20 October...

A quick update today.

The Exorcism of Molly Hartley is a horror thriller where 6 years after we last saw Molly (Sarah Lind), she is celebrating her 24th birthday and begins acting strangely, eliciting a threesome which ends with her apparently murdering the other two participants and now she's hearing voices. Sent to a mental institution to be overseen by Dr. Laurie Hawthorne (Gina Holden), Molly's behaviour continues to get more erratic that the doctor thinks that maybe she is possessed by Satan. Turns out that 6 years, 6 months and 6 days after Molly turns 18, Satan will complete his final transformation after Molly's parents already gave her soul to Satan when she was a kid. It so happens that a former priest who has performed an exorcism, John (Devon Sawa, geez, haven't seen him in anything since early last decade), is also staying at the mental institution and the doctor asks him to perform an exorcism on Molly, which he reluctantly does and successfully completes. But Satan will have his way... I'm just going to say upfront that I think exorcism movies are pretty much all the same and for that reason, all boring. They're never going to be better than the granddaddy of all exorcism movies, The Exorcist, but they keep making the same movie over and over again, so they must appeal to some one. I was interested in this movie because it bizarrely is the sequel to The Haunting of Molly Hartley (which I first capped 6 years, 6 months...), sadly no Haley Bennett this time, plus I got wind of the threesome scene, but really, this is B-grade all the way that perks up a bit in the final act when Satan is let loose, but otherwise not much to recommend it. Would've liked to have seen more of Sarah Lind too and I'm not convinced it's her in that threesome scene below.

Australian VHS Classics for 12 October...

Haven't gone to the video vault in a while, so here goes. Not 1, not 2, not 3 but 4 movies made in Adelaide from the late 90s, early 00s. Three of them are apparently a part of a horror trilogy, possibly only because they were written by one man.

Scratch is a 2000 horror comedy where three young upstarts, Jay (Jed Kurzel, now a composer on movies like Snowtown, The Babadook and the upcoming Macbeth movie), Mick (Victoria Dixon-Whittle) and Tommy (Aaron March) have there own TV show called Shocko where they scare the living shit out of the dregs of society for a cheap laugh. Their next ~~victim~~ guest is Colin (Bernie Ledger) who works as a security guard at an abandoned insane asylum and looks like a real loser, perfect for their show. Things all go to plan and Colin seems to be losing it, but then something unexpectedly comes over Colin and now the hunted becomes the hunter and he traps the three and sets them up on his own TV show. Turns out Colin used to be a game show host on some show that lasted a few week, but has been reliving it every day since. And his game show is all about humiliation and torture. He get Jay and Mick to answer question with the punishment being a rather severe piercing or they get the opportunity to save Tommy whose head is inside a microwave oven. Meanwhile, two crims on the run in a caravan are its only audience, but they'd rather watch the football. Bizarre black comedy that's actually not half bad and seems to have its ideas better thought out than the other movies. Completely nutty most of the time and at times quite nasty, but not a bad watch even with its budget limitations. A surprising success...

Moloch is a 2001 horror movie where two friends Jake and Alex (Luke Dean and Taras Sobol) hatch a plan to get rich by buying an old abandoned property that is rumored to be full of gold called Moloch. They convince their respective girlfriends Nat and Ari (Charlotte Rees and Naomi Lopez) to come along as they spend the weekend checking out and setting up for the big dig. Along the way, they get a flat tyre and stop off at a service station to get it fixed and are greeted by a creepy lady who helps them. Meanwhile, Ari spots a little girl, apparently the daughter of the creepy service station lady, having a tea party and decides to join her, only for the little girl to strangle the living daylights out of Ari. The creepy lady laughs it off and then warns them about going to Moloch. The foursome reach Moloch, a place that looks properly abandoned and creepy things begin happening. First, they find a room full of dead birds, creepy dolls litter the place and some of the group get locked in places for a period of time. The next day, Jake finds that all of their markings to dig have disappeared and his compass is going wild. At night, they decide to leave, but their car collapses around them and in the commotion, Nat disappears. The next morning with no car to leave, they find a terrified old man chained up who tells them of the Molochs that haunt the place and attempts to help them find Nat. But, the Molochs are not done yet. Boring, seen-it-all before horror movie that takes an eternity to get going and then when it does, it all that much scary and doesn't really explain much of why it is happening. It has two effective scenes, both involving the little girl who unbelievably creepy, but apart from that, Moloch doesn't work and the premise isn't interesting at all.

Bodyjackers is a 2001 horror comedy where a meteorite lands in a small town. A small town ambulance driver Walter (Hugh Sexton) and his trusty offsider Brendan (Dan McInnes) find a slime that seems to have cloning properties. Three months later, drifter O'Grady (Gary Sweet) and his lover Loretta (Elissa Elliot) are passing through but get pulled over by the local cop Hannigan (Vince Poletto) who is overly aggressive towards them, almost sexually assaulting Loretta before O'Grady intervene and in the ensuing struggle, accidentally shoot Hannigan, who then gets run over, numerous times it seems when he is found dead. O'Grady tells Loretta to run away while he decides stays in town trying at the pub owned by Audrey (Alyce Platt) who lives with her goth daughter Simone (Charlotte Rees) to get his bearings. Meanwhile, Walter and Brendan take Hannigan away and are then called out to take local handyman Andy to hospital when he has an accident. O'Grady takes a job as a handyman with the new invigorated Andy who doesn't seem to be himself. Later that day, Simone has a car accident and abandons her car, but turns up hours later a different person and all of a sudden like Brendan, who she despised before. When Loretta turns up the next day, not necessarily herself, O'Grady thinks that Walter and Brendan are up to something and goes to their base and finds out that they are cloning the townsfolk and turning them into their own creations. When Walter finds out O'Grady is after them, he clones Hannigan to kill O'Grady, but O'Grady has other plans. Corny comedy that relies more on the comedy, which is lacking, than the horror part of the equation. Seems to have a slightly bigger budget featuring more well known actors (Gary Sweet is a massive step up from who the other movies had) and they seem to be in on the joke. It's just a shame that joke just isn't very funny.

One more movie with many of the same people involved and from the director of Moloch, Spank is a 1999 comedy where Paulie (Robert Mammone) arrives back in town after spending three years in a monastery and meets up with old friend Nick (Mario Gamma) who runs a cafe and gets a job there. The cafe is owned by Rocky (Vince Poletto), a Sylvester Stallone-obsessed wannabe thug who doesn't have time for his dying father and is only interested in keeping up appearances including treating his girlfriend Jo (Victoria Dixon-Whittle) like crap. Rocky wants to start up a new cafe in the Chinese restaurant down the street who Rocky has harangued the owners out of the place, but they restaurant owners have other plans, setting up their own cafe further down the street to cut-in on Rocky, with the help of the Tina (Lucia Mastrantone) who really runs the cafe and her brother. When Rocky invites Paulie, Nick, Jo and his crew to a soccer club to keep up appearances, Jo falls for Paulie, but she has the problem of Rocky who she's never going to be rid of. Nick and Rocky start building the Blue Velvet Cafe (you know, after the movie...) and it's a race to see who opens their cafe first, with Rocky and Nick looking like winning. Meanwhile, Jo finally dumps Rocky, who is devastated and starts dating Paulie, which Rocky seems clueless too but he's going to get who she's dating. Tina and her brother decide to take over the cafe as Rocky and Nick have no interest but making money, but Rocky decides to raise the rent on them so that he can get the place back when they can't afford it, but Tina accept the offer causing Rocky to start his own cafe which is just another scam. Tina and her brother rename their cafe Spank, Rocky finally finds out about Jo and Paulie, but Paulie fight back when threatened and Rocky and Nick start up their boxing inspired cafe/scam only to fall foul of the police. Broad comedy and by broad I mean every ethnic stereotype is mined and exaggerated. Rocky's so over-the-top he's beyond caricature. Not a lot of subtlety in the movie with only Jo and Paulie's relationship being the only thing not overdone. Interesting to see the name of renowned Adelaide director Rolf de Heer as producer of this movie as it's not even in the same ball park as any of his movies. Not really funny and totally forgettable and an obvious cash-in on the Wog craze at the time, Spank is a complete misfire.

All of the below updates are from VHS sources, so the quality is down, but for the most part, the quality of the videos is actually pretty good. I wish that Charlotte Rees scene from Moloch was significantly brighter, but it's better than nothing I s'pose. Would've love to have seen more from Victoria Dixon-Whittle, who's only been in one movie since this lot, she looked promising in Scratch and isn't bad in Spank.

Update for 10 October...

The Longest Ride is a romantic drama about Sophia (Britt Robertson), an art major who has a job in New York lined up for the summer. Her friend Marcia (Melissa Benoist) drags her to a rodeo where she is the recipient of a hat from bull rider Luke (Scott Eastwood) and after meeting again later at a bar, hit it off and decide to go on a date together. The date goes well but on the way home, Luke spots a car on fire off the road and goes in to help its occupant Ira Levinson (Alan Alda) escape the burning car while Sophia rescues a box Ira asks to save. At the hospital, Sophia tells Luke that she is going to New York after college and they decide to not continue to a relationship. While waiting to see Ira, Sophia looks in the box and it seems to have a lifetime of photos and correspondence where Ira (younger Ira played by Jack Huston) tells the story of how he came to be with his one true love Ruth (Oona Chaplin). Sophia sees Ira and he reads out some of his correspondence where he decides to marry Ruth, but the war intervenes, but after been shot in the war, he comes back a changed person because he now cannot provide Ruth with the big family she wants. They decide to get married anyway, but Ruth finds it hard to reconcile the fact that the couple will never have children. Meanwhile, Sophia and Luke see each other again at the hospital when Luke comes to visit Ira a few days later. They decide to hang out together as friends, but fall for each other. Luke is rising up the bull riding rankings, but his mother (Lolita Davidovich) wants him to quit because of a near fatal accident he had a year ago. This intensifies when he has another accident and this along with his dismissal of what she loves causes Sophia and Luke to split. Sophia continues to see Ira where he tells of he and Ruth moving to town that is full of artists where she becomes a teacher and becomes attached to a young boy who is poorly looked after by his guardians, but gets too involved to the point that she wants to takes him off their hands. This results in Ira and Ruth splitting up for a while, but they get back together and decide to focus on other pursuits instead of her want for a child. Ira dies, but he has a surprise that will change everything for Sophia and Luke. I only need to mention the name Nicholas Sparks and you know exactly what you're dealing with here. Hell, this movie is so similar to The Notebook that even though I hadn't seen that movie in 10 years, I was picking out the numerous similarities while watching The Longest Ride. Look, I'm a very cynical person, so much of the charm of The Longest Ride is lost on me, but it's not a bad movie or even an overly sentimental movie which these movies tend to be, just familiar.

Also featuring below is an extended sex scene which was on the Bluray. It's really only a couple of shots, but we get to see Britt Robertson's bottom plus one shot shows more than it does in the movie because an extra layer of steam hasn't been added. Still could be better...

Update for 5 October...

A bit of a clean out today with the need to make some room on my hard drives, so here's a couple of quick series. I know Jupiter Ascending copped a lot of stick, but I didn't mind it. It's not perfect, it has a weak lead villain and there's a portion of the movie where it's take your turn to be the bad guy and story need a lot of explaining to make sense of who the hell Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) is and why (and I'm still not sure about that), but there's some good stuff here. It's a mess, but not a bad one. Easy Virtue I've had sitting around for ages and watched it probably over a year ago so I don't remember much of it, but I remember it being very minor, the usual English family try to come to terms with an outsider.

Update for 3 October...

A couple of quick updates from new releases.

Deathgasm is a New Zealand horror movie where Brodie (Milo Cawthorne), a heavy metal fan is forced to move in with his uncle, aunt and bully cousin after his mother is put in jail. At his new school, he makes friends with Dungeons and Dragons nerds Dion and Giles and catches the eye of his cousin's girlfriend Medina (Kimberley Crossman). His one sanctuary is the local record store where he meets fellow metal head Zakk (James Blake) and they become friends and start a band called DEATHGASM with Dion and Giles. One night, Zakk takes Brodie to an near-abandoned house where an old heavy metal singer is winding up his last days. They take a record that he has in his hands and avoid a satanic cult that kills the singer after the find out that he gave away what was in the record sleeve: music notation that summons demons. Zakk and Brodie find the notations and decide to incorporate it into their act and surprise, surprise, it turns people in town into demons. The satanic cult come to town to so there leader can turn into the big demon, The Blind One, only for him to be usurped by his underling Shanna (Delaney Tabron). Now she and the other underlings must find Zakk and Brodie to summon The Blind One while stopping them from ending the demonic plague. If only they can remember how that riff goes... Fun and funny horror comedy playing up all the old heavy metal/satanic worship clichés and has plenty of gory scenes for those who like that. From the producers of the also very good New Zealand horror comedy Housebound, this is another fine example of that genre.

I Spit On Your Grave 3: Vengeance Is Mine continues on from the first movie with Jennifer (Sarah Butler) arriving back to her boring job, but not the same person she was. She jumps at shadows and finds it impossible to make friends, even with other women and cynically goes to a psychiatrist, which she hates intensely. One night, she spots a sign advertising a rape support group and finds other broken people, but also makes a friend in Marla (Jennifer Landon), who hates the group and is angry at everything. After a drink one night, the two decide to follow a drunk man home and give him a scare and both Jennifer and Marla get a thrill from it. Marla decides to up the stakes and frighten the stepfather of one of the group who is being abused by him, but she doesn't tell Jennifer until the last moment because she would talk Marla out of it. Marla beats up and threatens the stepfather, but is pulled out of doing more by Jennifer. Marla opens up about her abusive ex-boyfriend who she is meeting later on. At the next meeting, a detective (Gabriel Hogan) arrives to question the group as Marla has been found dead. It looks certain to be the ex-boyfriend, but the case against him goes nowhere and this angers Jennifer. She decides to do something about it and lures the ex-boyfriend into a liaison where she dismembers his penis and kills him. This exhilarates Jennifer as justice has been done, but it causes suspicion on the group, particularly Oscar (Doug McKeon) who has his own problems with the police getting justice for his dead daughter. Jennifer continues her vengeance, targetting the stepfather who is back abusing again. This new murder makes the police focus on Oscar, who Jennifer decides to help get revenge for the man who raped and destroyed his daughter, a musclebound gym junkie. Jennifer gets in over her head, but is saved from being raped by the detective who has been tailing her. Now the police know that Jennifer is probably behind the murders of the men, but can't make it stick. But by now, Jennifer only knows vengeance and watch out any man who gets in her way. By now, you don't just walk into the I Spit On Your Grave movies because you surely know what you are going to get. Thankfully, the third movie isn't a rehash of the same plot as the first two because that would be beating a dead rapist, so to speak, so thankfully the rape and humiliation stuff is kept to flashbacks and well for equal opportunity, the male victims. I Spit On Your Grave 3 is a pure revenge movie and one of the nastiest I've seen in a while. Jennifer is fully off her rocker now and even daydreams violent acts against people including those trying to help her. Sarah Butler is quite good again reprising her role from the first movie, but the third movie is very silly once the killings start and as with previous movies takes particular joy in the nastiness of vengeance that is happening. It starts off promisingly with Jennifer and Marla, but once Marla dies, it's nothing but extreme violence followed by more extreme violence with a violent daydream sequence thrown in and topped off with a lazy twist that is barely concealed throughout. Let's face it, you and I aren't watching this series for its fresh takes on the revenge genre.

Update for 1 October...

Finally gotten around to capping Mad Max: Fury Road. And of course I couldn't help myself but do a comprehensive look at it.
