Australian Classics for 30 April...
Some quick series from a wide array of Australian movies.
The Horseman is a 2008 revenge thriller where Christian Forteski (Peter Marshall) decides to overcome his pain for the loss of his daughter (Hannah Levien) by torturing and killing everyone involved with the porn movie she made where she was given the heroin that killed her. Using his job as a pest controller to help get access to the video's participants, Christian cuts his way through suppliers, directors and actors until he gets down to Derek (Brad McMurray), who looks to be behind her death. Along the way, he picks up a hitchhiker Alice (Caroline Marohasy) who is running away from her own problems. Very thin story, but the real highlight of The Horseman is it's fights which are frequent and very well done, better than most Hollywood productions and quite brutal at times. A good movie, but the lack of story stops The Horseman from being a great movie. Hannah Levien only has a small role in this movie, in fact I think her entire role might be below although on the Bluray there's much more of her role in the deleted scenes. She is currently getting regular work on American TV so hopefully get more opportunities to cap her in the future.
Lantana is 2001 ensemble drama where police detective Leon Zat (Anthony LaPaglia) begins an affair with Jane (Rachael Blake), who met during a salsa dance class which Leon takes with his wife Sonja (Kerry Armstrong). Sonja is seeing a psychiatrist Dr. Valerie Sommers (Barbara Hershey), trying to work out the problems in her marriage. Valerie is releasing a book about the murder of her young daughter and her husband John (Geoffrey Rush) is not happy about it and seems very distant in their relationship. Valerie is having a very difficult time with a patient Patrick (Peter Phelps), a gay man who is in a relationship with a married man and after a problematic session with Patrick, Valerie loses herself and goes from a drive and has an accident, leaving her stranded. While waiting for roadside service, Valerie stops a car to get assistance and is never seen again. Leon and his partner (Leah Purcell) are investigating her disappearance and suspect John. Jane sees her next door neighbour Nik (Vince Colosimo) arrive home in a worrisome state and throws something into the lantana bush and see finds that it's a woman shoe. She calls the police and Nik is arrested but things are never that simple. Leon admits to Sonja that he cheated on her although Sonja almost cheated herself. Gripping story about a group of people all seemingly going downhill in their lives. Is at its best when on the disappearance of Valerie and is all very grim with no one coming out unscathed and the end is a total 'everything's fucked' scenario. But one thing did grate with me as it usually does with ensemble dramas is how everyone it amazingly connected to one another and in Lantana it just gets more and more laughable with every connection that is made. Even a seemingly random moment ends up being connected in a most unlikely manner. If the story wasn't that good, I'd probably hate Lantana for it's ridiculous improbability of a fair portion of it.
Those Dear Departed is a 1987 comedy about renowned stage actor Max Falcon (Garry McDonald) who is about to be killed by his wife Marilyn (Pamela Stephenson) during a performance of his play Fraud! The Musical. He survives, but unperturbed, Marilyn continues to make attempts on his life while continuing her affair with his driver who is a poet, Richard (Marian Dworakowski). After accidentally poisoning Max's agent Norda (Su Cruickshank), the police, including Inspector Jerry (John Clarke) and his sergeant Steve (Jonathan Biggins) become involved and place the blame on Max. Well until Marilyn and Richard fake Max's suicide and finally off Max. Max goes to 'theatre heaven' (surely hell...), where with Norda and his long lost father, they contrive a way from the afterlife to get Marilyn to confess to Max's murder but all it results in is Marilyn falling in love with Max again and the death of Richard when he starts seeing their ghosts. So, will Marilyn confess or will she continue her homicidal rampage and continue to get away with murder. Terrible, terrible movie, incredibly unfunny and worse for a comedy about a homicidal maniac, just uninteresting. One of those 80s comedies when they just discovered that death is actually funny except there's not a much funny about this. A great comedy cast has been assembled but material their given is appallingly bad. McDonald's character is a terrible bore and hedging the movie on this annoying character was a major error. Stephenson's character gets the only good stuff in the movie, which isn't much, but one scene involving her sniper shooting one of the cops is badly misjudged and belongs in a different movie. Appropriately, this movie died a horrible death at the box office and barely lasted a week which is saying something considering some of the movies that I've seen get a release.
Casino Reef is a 1998 Gold Coast set thriller where devoted cop and husband Matt Phoenix (Colin Handley) takes down a drug dealer and kills him in the process. To keep up appearances, Phoenix is suspended from the force, but is secretly picked up by the new crime team, the ICA, who have been set up to take down notorious local kingpin Castelano (John Orcsik), the man who supplied the money in that raid. Castelano decides to put kill Phoenix by placing a bomb in his car, but Phoenix's wife and daughter are in the car when it goes off, with his wife dying and his daughter badly burnt. Phoenix decides to dive headlong into work, assigned to protect eccentric inventor Smithy (Robin Stewart) who has created an engine that works in an environmentally friendly way, much to the chagrin of Castelano and his oil-loving buddies. Well, Smithy and his niece are kidnapped by a group led by one of the ICA's more renegade members and it's a race against time to get them back and stop Castelano. Incredibly low-rent made-for-TV thriller that stunning has a revered TV director in the director's chair, but man is this movie at the very low end of things. Awful clichéd plot and script, then there's the terrible acting including one topless actress who looks like she was forced at gunpoint to be in it although former Bless This House/Pacific Banana actor Robin Stewart is having a blast as Smithy. Some scenes are just laughable with anything involving the Russian member of the ICA just ridiculous including shooting a bloke backwards while lying on a moving motorbike and so many hot Gold Coast babes turning up, not really in any roles of note, but looking hot nonetheless. I would say that this is one of the worst movies ever made in Australia, but there isn't any allusions to anything great unlike the appalling Those Dear Departed, which has no excuse.

Update for 20 April...
Blood Orange is a thriller where a former big name rocker Bill (Iggy Pop) is living his final days in a Spanish villa with his much younger wife Isabelle (Kacey Barnfield), and is planning to kill himself at the end of the month. Nothing much happens at the house, Bill, who's virtually blind, spends the day shooting at rabbits and playing music while Isabelle spends her time swimming and sunbathing naked. Their only human contact is from the pool boy David (Antonio Magro) with Isabelle gently teasing him when she's not having sex with him. Their world is about to be rocked when Lucas (Ben Lamb), the former step-son of Isabelle's who also had an affair together, arrives at the villa wanting his inheritance that entirely given to Isabelle. Bill calms him down by offering a compromise of sorts, but Lucas wants all that is owed to him. When he sees that Isabelle is having sex with David, Lucas sets up his own plan of revenge against Isabelle, but the plan backfires big time and sets off a chain of events that may end badly for all involved or maybe it will end perfectly. Slow burn thriller that works surprisingly well with it's limitations and helps that it is only 80 minutes long. All four actors are quite good particularly Iggy Pop who plays his dying character with a matter-of-fact attitude which works well particularly when things go badly. Not a bad little watch...

Update for 17 April...
A quick update to compliment another update featuring Australian actress Louise Robinson for the Australian/NZ actresses overseas part of the site.
The Right Kind Of Wrong is a Canadian romantic comedy where Leo (Ryan Kwanten) is a wannabe writer who's wife leaves him but gives him the parting gift of a blog that documents his uselessness in graphic detail. Locally, he becomes a joke because of it, but in the pits of despair he spies Colette (Sara Canning) who just happens to be getting married to local hotshot Danny (Ryan McPartlin) at that moment. Not perturbed by this, Leo decides he must have Colette, gatecrashing her wedding and hitting on her to no prevail. But, Leo finds a new lease on life and continues to pursue Colette and she resists, for a while, but slowly she starts to see his worth. A dicey premise for a romantic comedy and it struggles bravely trying everything to justify the premise, but fails mainly because the lead character is so undeserving of some 'luck' in his life. And that's despite obvious clichés working in his favour such as the woman marrying the wrong guy because he's a bully who's tangled with the hero before and numerous signs of luck that he uses as a guide that he's on the right track. The hero is made out to be such an obvious lovable loser though, but why is he so deserving of the 'perfect' girl when he does nothing to warrant it except 'getting back on the bike'. An attempt at something different in a genre mired by repeating the same over and over again is at least a positive, it's just a shame it isn't much good.

Update for 13 April...
Quick update from the Australian comedy Alex & Eve, a movie very much in the vein of My Big Fat Greek Wedding but with an added Lebanese Muslim twist. I saw it in cinema back in November last year and reviewed it then if you are interested. I ummed and ahhed about making college but decided against it although I still might even though there's not much to work with.

Update for 10 April...
Three horror movies in today's update. I have very little idea of what's going on in The Broken, something about people being killed by their evil doppelgängers and they take over except Lena Headey's character doesn't know this or something, I don't know. The Girl in the Photographs is a fairly uninvolving look at a pair of serial killers who are obsessed with Colleen (Claudia Lee) and kill all the people around her, much to the disinterest of the cops, Colleen herself and probably the audience. Meanwhile, an edgy photographer (Kal Penn) gets a whiff of something he can use in his art and that doesn't end well. Disappointing and quite nasty movie that never seems to explain anything including what happens to most of those killed and the ending is well, probably saved from being diabolical by its final shot, but still don't know what happened to those still alive... You're Next is an effective darkly comic horror movie with some interesting touches where a family is picked off by seemingly random strangers but something bigger is at play. Somebody forgot to tell Australian girl Erin (Sharni Vinson) who uses her survivalist skills to hopefully get through the night. Pretty good horror thrills and a weird sense of humour make the movie work, but I get the feeling the movie would be fairly divisive if they don't get the humour involved and treat it as a straight horror movie.

Update for 5 April...
Haven't done an Australian short film update for a while, well usually I do one a year but I've seen a few recently. Man, is watching short films absolutely low yield, I reckon about 1 in 20 has something to cap in it and that's probably generous. So, you can imagine how many I've watched just to get this lot. Madness...
A Burning Thing is about a firefighter who finds his best friend's sister (Clare Bowen) lighting a fire, but instead of turning her in, he gives in to his own feelings and they begin starting fires together which gets them sexually excited until it all goes wrong. OK movie but very basic. Of course, you probably know that Clare is one of the stars of the TV show Nashville.
Clare Bowen in A Burning Thing
18022kb 44sec 1280x544 (side-boob, sex scene)
5194kb 12sec 1280x544 (sex scene)
I'm The One is a drama about a teenage boy who has a major crush on his dad's new partner (Maya Stange) and one night decides to act on it. Pretty good but probably could've gone longer.
Maya Stange in I'm The One
5094kb 12sec 1280x720 (breasts/side-boob, in towel)
39726kb 3min 50sec 1280x720 (plenty of cleavage in see-through nightie to breasts, sex scene, extremely lengthy)
I didn't really understand In Hearts Left Behind, something to do with regrets about a lover killing herself, I think...
Chloe Gardner in In Hearts Left Behind
39873kb 55sec 1920x840 (side-boob, bra)
49363kb 1min 1920x840 (side-boob, bare back, 'nude' in bath)
In View is about a woman (Jessica Clarke) in a relationship who unexpectedly gets turned on when her neighbour accidentally spies her undressing through the window. She begins flirting with the boy until he decides to take it to the next level. The ending is a bit shambolic, but a not bad flirtation otherwise. Reckon we'll be seeing more of Jessica in the future. She was in an episode of The Beautiful Lie having a go at Sophie Lowe's character and is one of the stars of the long gestating Nadia Tass/David Parker movie which I'm sure was made 2 or 3 years ago and hasn't come out yet.
Jessica Clarke in In View
21300kb 49sec 1280x544 (plenty of cleavage in nightie, allusion to masturbating)
34500kb 1min 26sec 1280x544 (plenty of cleavage in singlet top, short skirt, down blouse)
37889kb 1min 35sec 1280x544 (bikini, lengthy)
30834kb 1min 13sec 1280x544 (bra and panties)
Jailbirds is a very brief short about two lovers locked up in a prison with some other bloke where the woman (Yael Stone) makes a key so that she can have sex with him or something. There's an animated sequence for some reason. Baffled by this movie, also thought this was the movie Yael shaved her head for, but no, no idea what that was for. I'm pretty sure her shaved head had to be incorporated into her Spirited character from memory. Of course, Yael is in Orange Is The New Black, she has a few nude scenes in the show I should get around to capping at some stage.
Yael Stone in Jailbirds

The Mind Job is comedy at the heart of all people who visit this site. A couple are asked to come into the police station to help identify a bag snatcher using a machine that is able to get video of their memories, but when the man is in the machine, he has memory lapses and it turns out it's because he was perving on the victim's bouncy breasts (perfectly portrayed by Debra Ades). Also, turns out he's a massive pervert and worse for him, has no sexy memories of his girlfriend but so many memories of her friends and even her mother. Very funny short and deadly accurate...
Debra Ades in The Mind Job
23219kb 58sec 1280x520 (plenty of cleavage in T-shirt, various down blouses)
Kelly Atkinson in The Mind Job
2023kb 4sec 1280x520 (upskirt)
Catherine Jermanus in The Mind Job
2993kb 6sec 1280x520 (plenty of cleavage)
Continental Drift is a drama about a woman (Hilary Park) who is backpacking in Croatia and goes off the beaten track and lives with a Serbian family with tensions still very much present. She has a brief fling with the woman of the house (Claudia Greenstone). Not a bad short.
Hilary Park and Claudia Greenstone in Continental Drift
28645kb 49sec 1440x810 (Hilary shows hint of nipple under water, both strategically 'nude')
42156kb 1min 12sec 1440x810 (girl-girl kissing)
The Orchard is a drama about a man (Alex Demetriades) who is getting ready for his father's funeral when he gets distracted by his father's goddaughter (Georgia Flood) which brings up some long held feelings. Not a bad little drama.
Georgia Flood in The Orchard
33787kb 51sec 1440x1072 (bra and panties)
54544kb 1min 24sec 1440x1072 (plenty of cleavage in slip, nippy, various upskirts, sex scene)
Not really sure what Wanderlust is about, what I can gather is that a woman (Jessica Tovey) who finds it hard to be intimate, is asked to help a young man leave his house. I think, I'm really at a loss as to what the point of that was. Anyway, a rare acting gig from Jesinta Campbell who would go on to be a contestant in Miss Universe and probably best known at the moment for dating a champion Australian Rules footballer, as models tend to do...

Update for 1 April...
Collages and videos from The Butterfly Effect 2 are available here.
One part redux, one part new stuff, but they are two movies in the one series so I stuck them together for this update. Today's update features the two sequels to the intriguing but flawed 2004 thriller The Butterfly Effect, basically slightly related sequels that was all the rage during the first decade of the 2000s when a genre film was a hit. The concept is explained in the first movie, but in the second movie it switches one key element, now the bloke can go back to the time a photograph was taken, actually not a bad idea, but the concept becomes muddled when the man with the brain injury starts going into photos for the stupidest reasons and basically ends with a slightly different interpretation of how the first movie ends. The third movie, bafflingly subtitled Revelations, is one of those sequels that always happen where its link to the original is very thin, but it apparently helps sales or something. The guy has a brain injury, absolutely zero explanation as to why, just straight into it as something you should already know, but now he's using his brain injury to go back in time to solve crimes, which really is the lamest thing to do. Even more ridiculous is he just watches the crimes happen, not even stop them. Thanks a lot buddy, but you really are a useless piece of the shit. It features Californication blonde era Rachel Miner as his sister (oh, fuck it I'll spoil it, she's ends up being an incestuous serial killer her brother is hunting which is incredibly obvious about a halfway through) plus Melissa Jones who was cast for two reasons and it's pretty obvious what they are when you see the video below. Terrible movie.
Melissa Jones in The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations
Raw HD caps of Melissa from The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations are available here.
