Update for 29 April...

A couple of new movies one Australian and the other an European production. Swinging Safari is a comedy set in the 1970s about 3 families in the one street where the adults have a huge falling out over a key party gone wrong while their kids muck around to their ignorance. Billed as a politically incorrect comedy, but honestly it's exactly like every other Stephan Elliot (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, Welcome To Woop Woop among others and let's face it, there's a steep drop-off after Priscilla) and is extremely hit or miss though it does have a pretty good and funny ending and the recreation of the 70s is pretty amazing. It's just a shame the movie never really delivers much more than obvious observations of the 70s and the star heavy cast seems mostly wasted (as in not used properly in the movie, not well, you know). The Man Who Was Thursday is a mind-bending thriller about a priest who loses his faith and his mind when a promiscuous women arrives. Saved from banishment by an old friend who uses him to infiltrate a religiously motivated group of terrorists who go by the days of the week and who may be attempting to assassinate the Pope. Also, apparently Il Duce is involved, I dunno, it's absolutely baffling and the ending definitely doesn't help. Interesting, but also completely bonkers.

Update for 26 April...

Four more quick series from movies released in the 90s. The Vagrant is a 1992 comedy thriller about a man on the way up (Bill Paxton) who buys a house and discovers a vagrant inside his house, so he goes all paranoid and puts in the latest security while bothering the cops about the vagrant. Then his neighbours are murdered and he blames the vagrant except everyone thinks it's he's the murderer. But is he right or extremely paranoid? Not bad but probably a 60 minute idea stretched to 90 minutes. I remember seeing the original Substitute movie with Tom Berenger in cinemas, yes, B-movies actually got cinema releases in the 90s, but I never watched any of the Treat Williams starring sequels. The second movie is pretty much the same plot as the original and boy there were a number of movies about gangs at school murdering teachers and students in the 90s after Dangerous Minds was a huge hit. These movies seem so foreign to me in Australia, schools have issues here but nothing like these movies portray. Not much to cap but a long bra scene from Susan May Pratt is better than nothing. Hangin' With the Homeboys was a regular on SBS in the 90s but I don't remember ever watching it as a recent viewing didn't bring back any memories. Basically four black or Latino men looking to party one Friday night and discovering that they are all drifting apart. Not bad. Stir Of Echoes is a solid ghost horror thriller where a man is hypnotised and begins to see the ghost of a dead girl (played by a young Jennifer Morrison) and goes crazy trying to find out what happened to her and it turns out it much closer to home than he imagines.

Update for 24 April...

The 90s are back again and they've never ended on this site. Hadn't seen either of the movies below before this update, actually never heard of Happy Hell Night, a 1992 Canadian B horror slasher that is partly filmed in the old Yugoslavia for whatever reason but most of the movie seems to be set in some fictional American college town and then all of a sudden a bunch of Eastern European hotties turn up to show a bit of skin. Baffling, but not as baffling as a very young Jorja Fox turning up for an uncredited role in the movie that has all the hallmarks of been added in later, it would certainly explain why she's uncredited. Not that she was that famous at the time, just that others are credited including Sam Rockwell who turns up to do some brief mugging and is in the movie for less time than even Jorja's small role. Even funnier is that I saw a cover for the movie and she and blink and miss Sam Rockwell are both listed boldly while the actual stars are not mentioned. Happy Hell Night isn't a great movie or even a good one, hell some of the acting is very dicey, but it does have a few surprising laughs and a slapstick killer who's a bit of fun.

Update for 23 April...

A couple of new movies today. Dude is a stoner comedy/teen drama about a girl (Lucy Hale) and her friends dealing with the final year of high school and the death of her boyfriend and brother of one of her friends while trying to get high. Not bad and delicately balances the line between disparate genres while Lucy Hale is quite good but honestly this movie will probably be remembered in these parts for her pretty sweet nude debut. Deep Blue Sea 2 changes the plot from the original by instead of trying to cure Alzheimer's disease via sharks (ha ha, still brilliantly stupid), the follow up attempts something far more rational by trying to control killer sharks. And it goes predictably as well. Pretty much a beat-for-beat rehash of the original including the killer scene of the shark killing a character as they curse it and to be honest it is not nearly as much fun, but at least Michael Beach as the megalomaniacal leader of the project who loves his killer sharks is having a blast. Also gotta love how Danielle Savre's wetsuit doesn't seem to zip up fully. What's up with that?

Update for 21 April...

Last TV movie update for this lot and it's a 90s TV movie special.

Being looking around for The Babysitter's Seduction for a while and almost bought it off iTunes before I found this. I always get this movie mixed up the Alicia Silverstone movie The Babysitter which was released at about the same time with a similar poster. But now that I've seen and capped both, I won't be making that mistake again, two completely different movies about babysitters. Sat on releasing An American Affair and I'm glad I did because a HD widescreen became available and it turns out the TV version is heavily edited, just entire sections of the movie are missing from the TV version (a plot strand about a pregnancy is completely excised) but not necessarily the nude or sex scenes which is usually the case and I have been caught out with before. So there's some small additions in the widescreen uncut version below plus I've added a couple of fullscreen videos that show a little bit more than the widescreen version. I remember watching Ladykiller on VHS back in the 90s but I probably remember the cover of the VHS better than the movie. As it's a TV version I'm hoping it's uncut although I remember it being quite tame but I can't find anything it check it against as it's not really being capped (something I also worry with the 90s TV movies they still air including with Captive from a couple a updates ago). Deadly Exposure is about uncovering a Nazi plot in American so you already know it's gonna be silly and it's absolutely is, almost Chances-like. There's a few sex scenes featuring Laura Johnson but it's clearly a body double at any hint of nudity, confirmed when there's a brief hint of a patch on her nipple when it's definitely her in one shot. Ah well...

Update for 19 April...

Hasn't been many TV movies playing on local TV lately and Channel 7 is pretty much the only place they do now, although Channel 9 used to but now repeat the same eleven movies ad nauseam. Instead of the midday movie, Channel 7 have been replaying their shitty reality TV show except a couple of weeks ago they played some premiere TV movies and these two movies below are from that and both have some pretty decent stuff to cap. Mostly underwear of course, but surprisingly some brief bum from Ashley Jones although I'd wager that it's a double (also think that she may have used a double in True Blood as well, very inconclusive). And if you're into terrible TV movies with trashy plots, Bad Sister has a doozy with killer woman posing inexplicably as a nun school teacher to get close to her school boy Instagram crush and systematically destroying him by being incredibly horny for him. Also a baffling obsession with red underwear... Laughably bad, but plenty of sexy stuff so it's tough to complain.

Surprisingly good Canadian kidnap drama and it's where I first saw Marie-Josée Croze, who's also very good in Maelstrom (which I must recap at some stage) from the same period. Surprised to see Saoirse Ronan in a TV movie as she's a pretty established movie star, but this movie's a better than usual made-for-TV fair.

Update for 14 April...

One more update of new movies. Some quick synopses: From Straight A's To XXX is a TV movie about the controversy surrounding porn star Belle Knox (Haley Pullos) who was outed and shamed at her university once it was discovered what she was doing. Typical silly TV movie stuff but a fair bit of sexy stuff (of course no nudity) to cap. Estranged is a thriller about a woman (Amy Manson) who loses her memory in a motorcycle accident and decides to go home to recuperate but it comes clear that there was a reason why she hasn't seen her family for a long time and now it's a fight for survival from her own family. Not bad. Wildling a horror thriller about a teenage girl (Bel Powley, who was excellent in The Diary Of A Teenage Girl), who has lived her entire life in the forest and has being brought into civilsation by a local cop (Liv Tyler). There's something not quite right about the girl who finds it hard to integrate into the real world especially when the lure of the forest is strong and a creature she's being taught to fear on the loose. Fairly good little horror movie and Bel Powley is again very good and fast becoming a must see actress.

Another couple of new movies, can't be bothered reviewing The Vanishing Of Sidney Hall apart from saying I was pretty bored by it, anyway...

Desolation is a thriller where hotel worker Katie (Dominik García-Lorido) meets well-known actor Jay (Brock Kelly) who is shooting a movie in town and after a whirlwind romance, Katie decides to join Jay in Los Angeles. But the building where Jay lives immediately spooks Katie as she sees a little girl haunting the halls along with a lot of little weird things begin to happen and that's not to mention the general riff-raff that inhabits the building. As she adjusts to her new home, Katie traps herself in the apartment, even moreso when Jay leaves town for a few days and that's when things start to go downhill for Katie. She seeks solace in the Jesuit pastor who lives in the building, Father Bill (Raymond J. Barry), but even he is not above an off-colour moment or two. Katie finally leaves to apartment to get a few things but when she comes back, she is attacked and then has a troubling encounter with the police. Katie is about to pack it in but will the building let her out alive..? Desolation is a movie that should be a stock-standard horror thriller, but it's third act twist adds a surprising element which makes the movie better than it has any right to be. There are also a number of odd moments throughout which add intrigue and interesting. This oddball movie is by no means perfect but is definitely an intriguing twist on the usual haunted building schtick. Plus some brief nudity from Dominik is a great chaser to her nudity in Magic City.

Update for 11 April...

Three more new movies. Some quick synopses: 1 Buck is a depressing drama/thriller that follows the path of a dollar note as it is passed around by a bunch of people including a cop on the edge trying to find a serial killer, a black man who is about to be in a whole world of trouble and the serial killer and probably others, I really couldn't be bothered as the movie is incredibly hateful and just when there's a glimmer of hope, how 'bout something even more hateful to end with. Dreadful. Cover Versions is a Rashomon-style drama told from the perspective of four members of a band about to have their first big show just as they are about to split up who rent out a house and after a party, a groupie ends up dead. Not bad and Debby Ryan is looking mighty fine. Que Dios Nos Perdone is a Spanish serial killer thriller where a cop on the edge and a brilliant cop who suffers from a stutter attempt to find a serial killer who rapes and kills old ladies. Pretty decent although the ending is more than a little contrived.

Update for 9 April...

Still going with the new movies and here's a couple more.

Happy Anniversary is a comedy about a couple on the day of their 3rd anniversary that takes a wild turn after Mollie (Noël Wells) decides she's not happy with Sam (Ben Schwartz) and wants to end it. Sam goes into a tailspin which isn't helped as he has a major deal to seal that will set his fledgling business up. Mollie moves back home with her parents and meets an old boyfriend while taking her father to the hospital. Sam continues to fret over the end of the relationship and it affects his pitch. After their dog gets itself into trouble, they show signs the maybe the relationship can be salvaged but when the old boyfriend texts her showing interest, Sam blows his top and it looks like it's all over. Can they work it out? OK movie and better for being under 80 minutes with a few amusing moments, but nothing that memorable. Both leads are fairly engaging and are the main reason to watch, but it's nothing you should rush out to see.

Dead On Arrival is another go at the poisoned man who tries to find out who killed him before he dies genre with Sam Collins (Billy Flynn) who after a great night where he signed a deal to make his experimental drug with local identity Dr. Alexander (Billy Slaughter) and celebrated at the doctor's party with Jessie (Christa B. Allen), Sam collapses on the side of the road on his way home. Turns out he's been poisoned and has less than 24 hours to live and that's not all as the doctor has been found dead and Sam is the lead suspect. Desperate to find out who has set him up, he enlists the help of Jessie but time is running out and local cop Deputy Renee (Christopher Rob Bowen), out-of-town detectives (including D.B. Sweeney) and a couple of gangsters are hot on the trail. It's about time for another DOA movie and well while they always contain a confusing plot but this one adds so many elements which make little sense particularly as there seems to be two movies going on here that somehow merge into one by pure coincidence. Also, the lead is total wet sock, zero charisma and his fate is hardly worth fighting for. I'm always up for another crack at DOA, but this one is very disappointing.

Update for 8 April...

The Executioners is a home invasion thriller where a group of friends go away to Belle's (Jemma Dallender) family house for a weekend away, but right from the start something is off. Belle is haunted by the death of her father at the house which occurred after he saved her from drowning and this is her first time back to the house. But after a scare, Belle and her friends Kay (Natalie Burn), Lori (Anna Shields) and Angela (Rachel Rosenstein) decide to leave but it's already too late. Three men break into the house and go on a spree of rape and torture although Belle escapes, but not without being shot. Belle decides to come back to the house and with her ravaged friends, they get revenge on the men but something is not quite right and while they might be getting revenge on their tormentors, one-by-one the men and the women are being picked off by someone watching the house. Home invasion thriller that is basically derivative of The Last House Of The Left and slowly but surely runs out of steam as it becomes clear the real reason behind the goings on and it's even more preposterous than you can imagine. For it to make sense you have to make a giant leap of faith and that's just not possible. Jemma Dallender (from I Spit On Your Grave 2) is pretty good in the lead and is making a habit of these rape revenge movies, but she's a good enough actress where she should be doing better movies than this.

Quick warning that there is a fair portion of the movie where the girls are in their underwear and that has been extensively displayed below, so quite a few long videos with only brief moments of nudity (with Anna Shields it's literally one frame of her bottom). Also if you're interested in some more Rachel Rosenstein, she had a much better nude scene in an episode of Shameless.

Some quick synopses: In Search Of Fellini is about a shy and naive young woman (Ksenia Solo) who loves movies then one day discovers Fellini movies and decides that she must meet him despite never been out in the world on her own. She then goes on a journey to Italy to meet Fellini but it's not going to be easy. Interesting idea but very airy-fairy. Permission is a drama about a couple who love each other but decide on a whim to explore other options and each come to a different conclusion. OK movie.

Update for 2 April...

More new movies today, all genre with 3 horror and one thriller movie.

Some quick synopses: Victor Crowley is a continuation of the Hatchet series where a bunch of people including the only man to survive his reign of terror are trapped in the swamp where killer Victor Crowley has been brought back to life and they must try and survive. One for the fans because it ain't a good one. Ryde is about a serial killer who uses a driving app to continue his spree over one night. Terrible and incredibly hateful movie particularly towards women, much more so than anything that happens in the I Spit On Your Grave series. Agenda: Payback is thriller about a screenwriter who kidnaps a scummy banker who's ripped off a whole bunch of people and the screenwriter has set up a plan to get their revenge on the banker but things don't go to plan. Fairly boring cheapie that has been done better by other movies but I'm all for seeing Cherilyn Wilson nude in a movie once more. Bornless Ones is an Evil Dead knock-off where a group of friends attempt to set up a house for a couple and her brother who is mentally disabled. But after one night, the mentally disabled brother has a miraculous recovery, but it's not what it seems as demons in the house have inhabited his body and attempt to do the same with all in the house. Fairly silly stuff plus that Bobby T nude scene is one of the most woefully lit scenes I've ever seen and a lot of the movie looks just like it. Close the fucking curtains... I've gotta watch better movies.
