Update for 27 January...

The 90s are still going with today's update featuring 3 violent crime thrillers. I watch Killing Zoe every few years or so, such a great movie, but I always forget how violent it is until I watch it and Jean-Hughes Anglade's character Eric basically shoots everyone who looks at him. I also can't believe this was made before Pulp Fiction as it was released about a year after Pulp Fiction was released.

My first and only time watching Thursday (before this recent viewing) was by accident when I got the wrong tape from the video store and ended up getting a copy of Thursday instead. Watched it, barely remember it, but it all came flooding back to me when I rewatched it recently. Man, this is well and truly a Tarantino rip-off from writer of sleazy movies Skip Woods (writer of Swordfish and Sabotage amongst other Hollywood fare). It's like Skip watched Pulp Fiction and thought 'I can do that' and it turns out he couldn't and Thursday ends up being a fairly boring movie especially considering it so sleazy. The opening scene is atrocious and the movie barely recovers from that. Also, what was the point of the opening scene when there's no continuity with the rest of the movie? And it's hard to say who's the worst character in this schmozzle, Paulina Porizkova's sex-crazed rapist psychopath, Glenn Plummer's Jamaican stereotype drug dealer, James Le Gros's awful cowboy or Mickey Rourke's corrupt cop who all magically turn up at Thomas Jane's house to find Aaron Eckhart's character and it's never explained why they all end up there. Thursday is worse than I remembered it was, so bad...

Can it get worse than Thursday? Enter Truth or Consequences N.M., directed by and starring Kiefer Sutherland. Again basically ripping off Tarantino (but not as openly as Thursday does), the movie is about a group of violent thieves who are on the run from the law and other criminals after a robbery turns to murder. As a way of avoiding the everyone, they take a couple in a R.V. hostage and take them along as they get to their destination, leaving a trail of bodies in their wake. Also, one of the gang is an undercover cop and they've already murdered one undercover cop, so he always on edge. Kiefer's character wouldn't look out of place in Thursday, all drug-snorting and killing everyone who looks at him (or just being talked out of it before doing so) and is basically unbearable for the entire movie. The plot's pretty silly and there's a love story for some reason then to top it off, Martin Sheen turns up as the head of a renegade police squad who go after the gang but they are basically murderers with badges and adds nothing to the movie except more violence. All ends with a massive shoot-out in the middle of nowhere. About the only interesting thing in the movie is the Kevin Pollak character who plays one of the hostages who starts to take a liking to the gang despite warnings against doing so, but apart from that it's violence scene in between boredom.

Update for 26 January...

It's back to the 90s for today's update.

I remember Mallrats got a pretty bad rap back in the day, I think even Kevin Smith 'apologised' for it at one stage (the credits of Chasing Amy, maybe?), but I remember liking it, particularly Jason Lee's and Michael Rooker's characters. Maybe I was just the right age for it. Today's update is from the extended edition of the movie and it main difference is an added on opening scene which is pretty unfunny and completely unnecessary and it seems to go forever (the extended edition is nearly half-an-hour longer). There's isn't anything extra to cap from the movie either. Just stick with the original.

Never seen Lord Of Illusions before but I do remember constantly seeing a trailer for it before cinema screening back in the day. Finally gotten around to see it and it's a not bad movie about a low rent private detective who gets involved in a case that involves a secret cult who are attempting to resurrect their leader from the dead. After a famous magician with ties to the cult dies horrifically on stage, he digs deeper and finds that nothing is what it seems (of course). One of Famke Janssen first roles and it's probably the closest she's ever been to being nude on screen.

Coming Soon is a 1999 teenage sex comedy from the female perspective that I had never heard of and it's a complete head-scratcher as to why. While none of the lead females are well known (maybe Gaby Hoffmann), the supporting cast is full of well known actors like Ryan Reynolds (as a completely wimpy SNAG who gets the girl, he don't play those any more), Ashton Kutcher (who's barely in it), Mia Farrow, Ryan O'Neal, Spalding Gray, Peter Bogdanovich even Yasmine Bleeth and Ellen Pompeo in a blink and you'll miss role. Released the same year as American Pie, it's pretty easy to see why that got all the love and nobody remembers Coming Soon. American Pie is relatable, Coming Soon is about rich girls getting what they want and it isn't even as raunchy as American Pie. and that final scene is completely laughable. Maybe this plays better with young women, but the rich girls in New York stuff make is hard to relate to. And that title, oh it's a pun because the girls want to orgasm so much but can't...

No idea what The Snare means, some thriller where three people are trapped in an abandoned apartment block and try to survive each other. I think it has something to do with sexual abuse or something, I really don't know. The Huntsman: Winter's War is one of those nobody asked for sequels that Hollywood bafflingly churn out. Nothing special although notable for sacking one of it's main characters and then spending the whole movie wondering where she is. I dunno, probably fucking the director...

Update for 22 January...

A couple of new movies today. 100 Streets is a ensemble drama that follows various people about to experience life-changing events. OK movie, a bit bombastic (particularly the Idris Elba storyline), but not bad. Detour is a thriller about a young man who drunkenly blurts out to his new drinking buddy that he wants his stepfather dead and the drinking buddy says he'll do it for $20,000. The young man reluctantly accepts and the drinking buddy along with his girlfriend go to Las Vegas to kill the stepfather, except things are not what they seem. Pretty good movie from director Christopher Smith, whose movies are always worth a look (Triangle, Severance, Creep) and always go in unusual places.

Update for 18 January...

A couple of new releases. The Girl On The Train is about an alcoholic disaster zone (Emily Blunt) who inserts herself into the disappearance of another woman (Haley Bennett) as she struggles to get over her ex-husband (Justin Theroux) who has a new wife (Rebecca Ferguson) and child. Not bad adult drama based on a bestselling book that is more about hiding the story from the audience and doesn't really succeed at that either. Solid watch but hardly memorable. Gotta admit I gave up on Between Us about 15 minutes in when one scene was so annoying I just couldn't watch any more. Don't usually bale on movies but I just couldn't be bothered after this awful scene. And I only watched for Olivia Thirlby, but I wasn't going to make it to the end of this.

Update for 17 January...

Just a quick update from a new Spanish movie, my first from a new movie this year (although you could make a case for Lethal Seduction being released recently).

Tarde Para La Ira is a revenge drama where José (Antonio de la Torre), a relatively well off man, hangs around a bar in the poorer part of town and befriends the regulars and also has a thing for one of the waitresses Ana (Ruth Díaz), who he also converses with online. Ana is married with child to Curro (Luis Callejo), brother of Juanjo who runs the bar. Curro is currently in jail serving 8 years for his involvement in a robbery as the getaway driver. Ana and José get together and things seem to be going well, but all that changes when Curro is released from prison and it sends José into a spin. This is because during the robbery, a woman was beaten to death and that woman was José's girlfriend and he hasn't forgotten. After Ana and Curro have a big argument, José decides it's time to get his revenge. He offers Ana and her son a trip to his country house to cool down and he forces Curro to help him find all those involved in the robbery, who incidentally were never caught. As José gets his revenge on those involved, Ana finds out why José has been hanging around and hopes that Curro survives the onslaught. Pretty decent revenge movie from great character actor Raúl Arévalo, who's worked regularly with de la Torre, with excellent performances from the three main characters in a movie that gets fairly brutal once the revenge starts (one stabbing scene is very full on). Worth a look if you're into quiet, simmering then suddenly violent revenge movies.

Redux for 14 January...

Some Spanish reduxes from series I capped in 2002-2003, off the TV as that was my only access to Spanish movies back in the day, so they were boxy and capped from VHS tapes in the before I had digital era. I remember hating La Celestina when I saw it, despite it's decent amount of nudity (sadly not from Penélope Cruz despite spending most of the movie longing hard for a bloke). It's all big melodrama with plenty of desperation and a silly plot. Just going through it was enough not to bother rewatching it. Obra Maestra is a pretty decent kidnap your favourite actress and force her into your dinky Super 8 movie including making her do a nude scene, so it's relatable. There's some fairly funny moments and probably more enjoyable if you're into the filmmaking process, particularly zero budget DIY movies.

Update for 12 January...

More 90s movies. First up is The Babysitter, a movie basically about people wanting to fuck the babysitter played by Alicia Silverstone. Plus the mother getting drunk because her husband obviously lusts after the babysitter. A fair chunk of the movie is just people dreaming of fucking the babysitter or walking in on the babysitter taking a bath (the bath is a bizarre ongoing obsession in this movie). Not much else to it, it's barely a movie but still clocks in at 90-odd minutes with about 10 minutes of material. And this trivia sure doesn't help the movie:

The movie does have a gratuitous nude scene from Tuesday Knight, who's never seen in the movie after this.

I remember seeing this movie on the video shelf back in the day and from memory it was a Blockbuster exclusive as in it was only available in their stores. This is backed up by the fact that they are a co-producer of the movie. Trying to think of other movies like that but my memory is failing me. Also, I get this movie mixed up with the Keri Russell starring The Babysitter's Seduction from the same period and similar story. They even have similar posters from memory...

There was something like 18 separate scenes to cap of Alicia that I grouped into 4 videos that follow a certain plot. Some of those segments are as short as a few seconds, so having 18 videos, most very brief, doesn't work.

2 Days In The Valley is a movie that probably wouldn't have happened without Pulp Fiction, even though the movie plays more like those wacky 80s/early 90s ensemble comedies where a bunch of unrelated character get caught up together unexpectedly for hilarious result. Except 2 Days has two stories going on at the same time, one sort of played for laughs and the other a deadly serious hitman plot and neither gel that well. Jeff Daniels' plot peters out well before the end which is a complete waste then Teri Hatcher disappears after being shot at. And let's face it, the only real reason to watch this movie nowadays is the stunning debut from Charlize Theron who came out of nowhere to be in this movie (although I'm completely perplexed by that jumpsuit thing she's wearing below. How does that even work..?). Everything else is long forgotten.

Mystery, Alaska is a pretty solid, if long, ice hockey movie about a great small town team that gets to play against New York Rangers in a practice game. Not much else to say except I've probably watched this movie way too many times for reasons I can't reconcile.

It's late 90s/early 2000s again with 3 more movies from that period. It's funny, but I remember Urban Legends 2: Final Cut way better than the original. I can barely remember what the plot to that movie is, but the second one I remember it being set in a film school while making a movie sort of influenced by the events of the first movie. The ending is pretty silly although the throwback to the original was a nice touch. Another thing that has baffled me is that topless pic of Jennifer Morrison that is allegedly an outtake from the movie. An outtake that has never been available on any version of the DVD (although there is a soft shower scene in the deleted scenes). Always wondered where it come from as looking at the pic, it actually makes sense that it was shot for the below sex scene. It seems to fit that scene fine and it doesn't seem fake either. So, where did it come from and why can't we get copy of the shot. Maybe it was smuggled out...

One of the reasons I'm doing these updates is because most of these movies I either watched or would see on the shelf down at the video store where I spent way too much time at when I was younger. Hadn't seen either Fortress 2 or When Saturday Comes but I remember both getting plenty of promotion down the local video shop. Fortress 2 is a cheap knock-off of the original (that was made in Queensland) and bafflingly has Pam Grier turn up for a rather rubbish role 2 years after Jackie Brown. That's the industry in a nutshell... I could swear When Saturday Comes was promoted at my local video shop for 5 years when it was released. i never watched it, thought it was about football fans, but is actually about a local football star (played by Sean Bean) who gets his chance to play for Sheffield Wednesday, but blows it badly and gets an unlikely second chance after his life goes to shit. Standard stuff really.

Update for 5 January...

Continuing on with the telemovies, today a couple of recently aired telemovies that I've had sitting around so I might as well finally finish them off. Being a fan of Martha Higareda for quite a while but haven't capped her much lately. She's quite good as a blind girl who tries to get to the bottom of why her cousin killed herself and what she finds tears a family apart. Not a bad telemovie as far as they go with a pretty decent cast of Latino actors. The Good Mistress is about a woman (Annie Heise) who gets a fresh start in a new town when an old friend gives her a job. She meets a man at the bar and sleeps with him and wouldn't you know it, he's her friend's husband and he's running for political office. Also, people start dying and the husband is looking like he's the killer and the woman could be the next victim. Silly stuff...

Update for 4 January...

Some recent made-for-TV movies.

Lethal Seduction is an absolute by-the-numbers TV movie where a teenage boy who has an overbearing mother (Amanda Detmer) meets a ravenous cougar (Dina Meyer) who seduces him and turns him against his mother. His mother tries to win him back with the little cupcake (Tessa Harnetiaux) she first warded him from, but the cougar hobbles her and then makes certain that the boy is all hers. Silly movie, but I laughed so much at how stupid and obvious it is, plus late 90s hotnesses battling each other, I ended up having more fun than the movie deserves. My favourite bit being the waiter who comes out of nowhere to warn the teenage boy. Why? Why did this happen? #PopFan is a thriller where a promiscuous pop star (Chelsea Kane) goes to a country house to write some new music and find herself. But along the way, a gas station worker fixes her car to have an accident and he comes along to save her and well, keep her forever. Her boyfriend and manager suspect something is amiss and go looking for her. Stock-standard stuff, nothing really to go on about.

Update for 1 January...

More late 90s/early 2000s movies in this update, hadn't seen any of these movies before this update. Goodbye Lover is a fairly decent comic noir movie where Patricia Arquette plays a sex-crazed woman who turns homicidal maniac when she doesn't gets what she wants, which is regularly going by this movie. Ellen DeGeneres is also good as the seen-it-all cop who smells a rat. Also much of the film is shot at weird angles, lots of crane and mirror shots, never seen so many odd angles in a movie. Remember this movie getting a small cinema release back in the day, no way that happens today. The second Blair Witch movie thankfully limits the found footage gimmick (and in this movie, most of the found footage has Erica Leerhsen naked, not a bad thing). Wasn't really a fan of the original and not much of one of the sequel either. Lots of hysterical behaviour, not really my thing. Not much of a fan of The Prophecy 2 either although it does have Christopher Walken at his most Christopher Walken plus one ridiculous scene where he can't work out how to use a computer, so he watches Brittany Murphy and her boyfriend drive head on into a wall in a suicide pact, only to save her life, so that she can use the computer for him. Fair enough. Bafflingly this has 5 entries in it's franchise. This movie was rather forgettable, don't know how 3 more movies come after this.

As usual, I continue to forget the yearly anniversary in early December, particularly 2016 being the 15 year I've been capping. I'm slowly trying to redo all the pre-johnny-moronic.com series, probably done about half of them and I've picked up another 40-50 or so DVD/Blurays that I plan on capping over the year or how long it takes now that about 70-80% of everything done since 2005 is in HD. As you've seen from the past couple of updates, I'm also going back into the 90s and early millennium and capping some HD movies (maybe even the occasional DVD if it isn't available in HD). Got about 20-30 of them I'll get around to doing soon enough. As always, Australian and New Zealand movies and TV will be the main focus, now up to 542 Australian movies capped including 23 movies released on Bluray/streaming in 2016 (I was going to say DVD, but I rarely cap new movies on DVD now) with a few more waiting for release. I'm also starting to screen capture stuff from streaming TV sites with my first series from the movie Dawn up a few days ago. Not all that much to do at the moment though. And there will be some VHS Classics as I still have quite a number of movies ready to go.

Alyson McKenzie Wells - Seclusion (excellent nudity in this B-grade movie)
Natalia de Molina - Kiki, el Amor se Hace (being keeping my eye on Natalia for a little while and the opening scene of the movie was a corker)
Elena Anaya - Swung (never ever disappoints does Elena. Absolute hall of famer)
Bel Powley - The Diary Of A Teenage Girl (plenty of nude scenes in the coming of age drama)
Ashley Greene - Rogue (a couple of really great nude scenes from Ashley)
Alexis Kendra and Elizabeth Sandy - Goddess Of Love (lots of nudity also pretty batshit crazy)
Abigail Hardingham and Fiona O'Shaughnessy - Nina Forever (bizarre movie but plenty of nudity)
Leeanna Walsman - Cleverman and Dawn (probably the best local nudity for the year)

With special mention for the girls of The Neon Demon (two Aussie girls and that corpse fucking lesbian scene with Jena Malone) and ToY (Briana Evigan's first nude scene!), Melia Renee in Uncle Nick (brief but some really nice scenes), Eline Powell in Game Of Thrones (even better than Emilia Clarke, if that was possible), Elizabeth Debicki - The Night Manager (some nice first nude scenes), Angela Trimbur in Trash Fire, Nicky Whelan in House Of Lies and Joséphine de La Baume in Road Games (French girl I'm really liking at the moment).
