Last update for 2018 adds two more new movies.

Some quick synopses:
Half Magic is a comedy written, directed and starring Heather Graham about 3 women who meets at an ultra-feminist get-together and form a friendship around attempting the get rid of the toxic men in their lives and replacing them with someone or something better. Pretty much exactly like most recent Heather Graham movies where she desperately finds love, nothing special but watchable.

The Meyerowitz Stories (New And Selected) is a comedy about Meyerowitz family, a bunch of mostly underachievers who struggle to express even the most basic of human relations without a bit of neuroses or pettiness. Admittedly, I only watched this movie because I remembered that Grace Van Patten from Under The Silver Lake, which I capped recently, was nude in it, but this is a pretty funny movie.

Update for 28 December...

Cam is a thriller where Alice (Madeline Brewer), who as a cam girl goes by the name Lola, is quickly rising up the charts and about the reach the top 50. She is desperate to rise up the ladder and isn't above stunts like faking her own death. After being dealt a blow by a rival who makes her goes down the ladder, Alice breaks one of her rules and does a dual show with a friend. The next morning, Alice finds the she is locked out of her account and it seems to have been taken over by her exact doppelganger as if nothing has changed. Alice goes spare trying to stop her doppelganger and attempts to get to the bottom of this but it has the drawback of her mother (Melora Walters) finding out. As she digs deeper, she finds that her fans and not as loyal or as kind as they seem behind a computer screen and she decides to resort to desperate measures to retrieve her identity. Decent thriller about what happens when your online identity begins to take over from your real identity although it doesn't really explain the reasoning behind why it happens, suggesting that a different direction to a more straightforward identity theft thriller was first floated. It would certainly explain why Jessica Parker Kennedy randomly turns up for two scenes, never to be mentioned again. Madeline Brewer throws herself thoroughly into the role of a cam girl that she's very convincing and quite unnerving during the more violent scenes which adds far more to the film than expected. Not a bad little movie if you looking for something decent on Netflix.

Update for 27 December...

Welcome Home is a thriller about an American couple Bryan and Cassie (Aaron Paul and Emily Ratajkowski) who decide to fix their marriage by spending time at an Italian villa, but things are not going well. They then meet their landlord, Federico (Riccardo Scamarcio), who seems friendly at first but it becomes clear he's up to something which turns out to involve having hidden cameras around the house and that he wants to bed Cassie. And he looks like carrying through with his plans. Stock standard thriller that's OK but is pretty predictable and never rises to any great heights. Also a lot of teasing of nudity from Emily which makes the movie even more frustrating to watch. Sigh...

Update for 26 December...

White Orchid is a mystery thriller where Claire (Olivia Thirlby), who works as an investigator for a government agency, is sent by her boss (Jennifer Beals) to a small town where she is to attempt to find out the identity of a notorious murder victim called The White Orchid, much to the chagrin of the local sheriff (John Carroll Lynch) who doesn't want to be shown up. Claire is drawn to the case and becomes fascinated with 'Julianna', who left a web of intrigue and as a briefcase of money with blind local Teresa (Nichelle Nichols). By taking the briefcase, it sets off a series of events and breathes life into the mystery which sends her to San Francisco where she imitates 'Julianna' and finds that by doing so, she becomes closer to finding out who the real murder victim is. Not bad mystery although it feels like it cheats in solving the mystery in the way it does and it doesn't help that much of the mystery seems to happen off screen. To be honest, the movie is more about the character of Claire coming out of her shell and Thirlby is very good in the lead and it's just great to see her in the lead of a movie once more.

Hacker's Game is a thriller about two hackers who fall in love but it turns out they are working against each other, one for a nasty multi-national and the other for a human rights lawyer. Not bad.

Imitation Girl is a sci-fi drama about a being that materialises into a form she sees on a magazine cover that just happens to be a porn actress (Lauren Ashley Carter). While the porn actress struggles with finding her place in the world, so does her imitation as she is taken in by Iranian refugees who help her find herself. Wanders a bit but it's not bad as well.

All About Nina is a drama about stand-up comedian Nina (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who is rising quickly on the New York comedy scene while her private life is a complete disaster. After another bust-up with Joe (Chace Crawford), an abusive married cop who she's fucking, Nina decides it's time to escape Joe by moving to Los Angeles and having a crack at the big time. She moves in with her agent's friend Lake (Kate del Castillo) and during her first gig she meets Rafe (Common) and they form a connection which befuddles Nina as she's never been in a relationship. Nina also wins a spot on a comedy showcase in front of big comedy honcho ~~Lorne~~ Larry Michaels (Beau Bridges) and wins her own showcase but Nina's self-destructive side can't let her have any success and she does something which may destroy all her dreams and her relationship with Rafe. Or it may just be the making of her. Not bad drama with a pretty decent lead performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead but this movie is pretty tough going as Nina is very damaged and her breakdown is hard-to-watch. But All About Nina is worth a look.

Update for 16 December...

Decided to abandon the 90s weekend updates for the rest of the year as I have a bunch of new releases I should get around to doing before the end of the year and there's been some really good stuff to cap in just the past month or so as this update can attest.

Some quick synopses:
Galveston is a thriller about a hitman who saves a young prostitute (Elle Fanning) from a situation where he was being ambushed and after she 'rescues' her sister, he helps protect them as he plans to get revenge on those who set him up. Dark as hell, but fairly good.

Lizzie is drama following the events that led to Lizzie Borden (Chloë Sevigny) to kill her parents. Kristen Stewart plays the help that get entwined in the doings at the Borden household. Pretty decent and it helps that I didn't really know a lot about the murders and haven't seen any of the dozens of movies about it for some reason.

Obey is a British drama about a boy who gets caught up in the civil unrest in his local area while falling for a girl (Sophie Kennedy Clark) who is squatting nearby. OK movie.

The Festival is a British comedy about a young man and his friend who go to a music festival to celebrate finishing college only to meet up with his ex (Hannah Tointon) and an annoying Australian woman (Claudia O'Doherty). Starring one of the Inbetweeners, this is pretty much The Inbetweeners at a music festival but not as funny as it should be, so basically exactly like an extended Inbetweeners episode.

Another couple of new movies in today's update. Under The Silver Lake is a Hollywood mystery movie about a man (Andrew Garfield) who meets a girl at his apartment complex who then disappear and goes about trying the find her. Interesting with plenty of hot chicks doing the Hollywood thing but really long and feels every bit of it's 2 and 1/4 hour run time. Colette is a biopic about a woman who is encouraged to write her salacious novels under her husband's name and when they are a success, encouraged further into writing and performing stuff that challenges gender roles which causes a stir. Not really my thing but not bad.

A Simple Favor (it is taking every fibre of my being to not type Favour) is a comic thriller where cooking vlogger Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) is a high energy, perky mother who gets on the nerves of all the other stay-at-home parents. One day, her son wants to play with another boy, whose mother Emily (Blake Lively) reluctantly agrees and while the two women couldn't be further apart they form a friendship. One day, Emily asks Stephanie to pick up her son and mind him for a day or so as she has business she needs to handle in Miami, but a day turns into another day and Stephanie calls Emily's husband, professor and failed author Sean (Henry Golding), who is also away but not with Emily about Stephanie's disappearance. They call the police and a few days later, Emily turns up dead in a lake. Stephanie helps Sean through the grieving process which leads to them getting together. Also, Stephanie is not satisfied with the outcome and decides to do her own sleuthing and finds out some things that suggest there's more to Emily's disappearance than there seems. Neat little thriller that sort of feels like part one of an ongoing series than a standalone movie. Anna Kendrick is quite good as the persistent friend who finds out way more than she was supposed to and who also has a dark secret of her own. And there's enough comic touches and intrigue throughout that keep the movie rolling along. Not bad at all.

Assassination Nation is satirical thriller set in Salem where Lily (Odessa Young) and her friends are traversing through their high school years without a care in the world until a hacker starts releasing photos and texts from people's phone starting with the mayor, who's secrets cause him to commit suicide during a press conference. The principal of the school is next where he is found to have highly dubious photos of his daughter but he stands defiant against the pressure. Then the big one hits, with over 1700 people's phones hacked including Lily's much older neighbour who she's been sharing compromising pics with although her face has been obscured. But a concerted effort both on and offline to find out who the girl is ends with her boyfriend Mark (Bill Skarsgård) outing her and causes her parents to kick her out of home. By now, Salem has turned crazy with accusations as to who is the hacker with vigilante squads forming to kill those involved only for the blame to fall onto Lily. With the vigilante squads, led by local cops closing in and with nowhere to go, Lily and her friends are in desperate straights just to survive the night let alone being social outcasts. Crazy movie which has obvious parallels to the Salem witch trials and makes a decent attempt at defining where America is at the moment. While I think the ending is a bit of cop out, the movie banks quite a lot of capital to still be a pretty decent and utterly crazy movie.

Update for 12 December...

Just some quick stuff from new Australian movies (3 of the movies were actually made in Perth) in today's update, nothing much but better than nothing. Some quick synopses:

Broken is a drama about a man struggling to come to terms with his wife's infidelity. OK, I guess.

Dark Sister (formerly known as Sororal) is a strange thriller about a woman who has vivid nightmares that she is witnessing people getting murdered. Turns out she has a twin sister who may be doing them. Loved the director's previous movie Esoterica and this one is every bit as baffling as that movie was, probably even more so as I've got no idea what's going on. Looks like this movie seems to have been sitting on the shelf since 2013 and now gets an American release under a different name with still no sign of an Australian release. Oh well...

Rabbit is another strange thriller about a woman (Adelaide Clemens) who has a vivid vision of the whereabouts of her missing twin sister (sound familiar...). She comes back to Adelaide and finds a lot of strange things happening (that's pretty normal for Adelaide though...), but they lead her to a cult run by a group of crazies (including Belgian actress Veerle Baetens, excellent in The Broken Circle Breakdown) who maybe harbouring her twin. Another baffler but I wasn't as interested in this movie as Dark Sister.

Broken Contract is a comedy thriller about a strip club that is going under when the owner hires a fixer to help him get his enemies of his back and it works, too well. As the bodies pile up, nobody's safe. Pretty stock-standard stuff and more than a little silly.

Update for 10 December...

3 new movies in today's update, a couple starring Maika Monroe, a new fave of the site. Some quick synopses:

Pimp is a drama about a teenage girl pimp Wednesday (Keke Palmer), who's picked up her dead father's business and has to look after her useless mother but is happy in a relationship with Nikki (Haley Ramm). Then she meets a stripper named Destiny (Vanessa Morgan) and falls for her while making Destiny her star attraction, destroying the plans she made Nikki to leave their life but also finding the wrath of Destiny's former pimp. Not bad but gets quite nasty at times.

After Everything is a love story where Elliot (Jeremy Allen White from Shameless) picks up Mia (Maika Monroe) just as he finds out he has a cancerous tumour. It's a tumultuous start to the relationship but Mia goes all-in and falls for Elliot as he has cancer treatment. They even get married and then wouldn't you know it, the cancer goes into remission and now they have to move on with their lives as a normal married couple. Which doesn't work as well as it did. OK movie but I feel like I've seen it all before.

Tau is a thriller about a prostitute/scammer (Maika Monroe), who is kidnapped and forced into doing horrible scientific experiments. She makes a daring escape only to meet her captor (Ed Skrein) who keeps her prisoner in his futuristic home to be watched by an AI he developed called Tau. The scammer attempts to make friends with Tau in an attempt to escape but it seems the house is inescapable and time is running out as her captor has nearly completed his new project and will need her to experiment on. Nothing special and fairly predictable.

90s Update for 9 December...

Another 90s update for the weekend with another couple of movies. Side Out is about a kid from out of town who gets a summer job from his uncle evicting people from their homes and comes across a former beach volleyball star who is now works as a coach while dodging all his creditors. He meets a girl (Courtney Thorne-Smith), gets into beach volleyball and finds he'd rather play volleyball than do his job. It's a pretty standard movie with a very late 80s/early 90s feel but I'd never heard of it before, seems it mostly forgotten. Candyman 3 isn't a patch on the original and you wouldn't expect it to be as it stars Donna D'Errico of Baywatch fame and is clearly made as a sleazy straight-to-DVD cheapie. Very disappointing considering how great the original is.

90s Update for 8 December...

The weekend 90s update with another 3 movies. Eye of the Beholder is a strange thriller that doesn't really work but it's an interesting movie from Priscilla: Queen of the Desert director Stephan Elliott who was making his international debut here. But I think the more interesting effort is the documentary about the making of the movie made by his costumer designer Lizzie Gardiner which is very intriguing look at making of a movie that is clearly being restricted by producers and a director who clearly needed to be on a leash. I don't usually give much of shit about making-ofs but this one is one of the best I've seen.

90s Update for 2 December...

The 90s weekend once again with 4 movies including a couple starring Ione Skye. Never seen Gas, Food Lodging before, a pretty well done indie drama about a single mother (Brooke Adams) and her two teenage daughters (Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk) trying to survive in a small American town while each has their own man problem. Pretty sad ending when we find out what happens to Ione Skye's lover. The director of Gas, Food Lodging, Alison Anders, was also one of the director of the portmanteau movie Four Rooms, with a segment each directed by four prominent indie directors at the time. I remember seeing this movie in cinemas back in the day and being pretty disappointed by it and a recent rewatch has solidified that view to the point that I think I had the exact same reaction to it as I did 20-odd years ago. The Robert Rodriguez section is the best, a silly little comedy about the bellhop looking after two mischievous kids. The others aren't exactly great, Quentin Tarantino's segment is quite lazy and obvious and Alison Anders segment about a bunch of witches avenging a past wrong is OK, helped by more nudity from Ione Skye but the whole movie isn't helped by the bridging character of Tim Roth's bellhop, who isn't a great character.
